Another player who’s attitude cost him, looked really accomplished on some of his appearances in the 2014/15 season, Wolfsburg away and Young Boys especially he looked like he had a future.

If you don’t have a positive mental attitude in football then any ability counts for nothing.

We can’t shift him because of the wages he’s on, and his attitude at times can’t have been helped by earning so much, so young, even if I never thought this kid was ever good enough defensively?

You win some, you lose some. At the time of that contract, there was supposedly interest from across the park and elsewhere and he was talked up as Baines's heir apparent. It didn't work out, and sadly we are reduced to loaning him out to cut our wage bill.

I wish him well – cracking left foot but, as has been said above, he was maybe given too much, too young. Let's just hope that our next crop of youngsters do the business.

We've sadly got a few more years of loan moves like this on fringe players, so far off the first team they've disappeared beyond the horizon, just counting down their lucrative Everton contract rather than see the club get some fee for them.

Brands and Silva, indeed the club, remain encumbered by players on long contracts and inflated wages, not at all commiserate with their skills or first team potential.

We can't give him away because of his current wage. It's Evertons fault not his. Luckily the loan will hopefully reduce the cost to us.

Financially he should be set for life so a final big season salary before going back down to the realistic salary of a 3rd tier player.

Good luck to him, he's had a very well paid career and if it wasn't for injuries or Baines being so good 4 or 5 years ago he may have had more of a chance.

I thought he looked a really good player when he was picked by Martinez. Sadly he has made a career out of never playing but getting paid a fortune.

A real shame to be truthful

In the grand scheme of things I doubt his wages really scratched the surface in comparison to other wasted funds.

Everyone is quick to write this guy off as a waster or gold digger. Maybe he is just not that good. Maybe he is one of those flukey players who has a hot streak now and then but on balance has more bad days than good. Obviously he has turned out to be a bad investment but I think his portrayal on here as some kind of machiavelllian con artist is a bit unnecessary.

These guys don't decide to play badly or to develop an attitude that stops them from doing so. Surely it's just a very sad matter that they don't quite make the grade. Very sad for them and very sad for us but we have to try and loaning them to run their contracts down is a very good thing to do, it keeps them in the shop window and gives them another to chance to come good for us.

I really don't believe David Unsworth is the coach / manager we need for the U23s... great Evertonian but that is it. We have some great youth players coming through but, when they get to the U23s, their development goes south, we sign promising overseas players for the U23s and their development goes south. Yes, they win titles but how many players become regular starters for the first team?

I have never seen so many promising players go backwards after they play for Everton's U23s, this is where we need a very technical coach to bring out every ounce of technical ability they can and not someone who shows them how to run all day at the expense of skill and technique.

I was fully behind the 5-year contract given to him. I thought he looked like a good, young player with a superb left foot.

At the time, the worst I thought he'd become was a useful squad player!

There must be something there for other teams to keep taking him. Good luck to him. As an academy player all you dream about is getting a contract. It doesn’t matter what level you play at your a professional footballer. Our club had the opportunity to play him more but didn’t for whatever reason. I’d be made up playing full time for Ipswich

He has the rare gift of a good left foot but probably lacked that bit of devil in his game to make the final step in his development. I think Jim Bennings mentions on another thread about the need for a strong and winning mentality in order to make it. Rodwell, Barkley,Galloway,Anichibe,Branch - there is a very long list of promising players who don’t make it and to blame it on coaching is wrong. It is when these boys have to start mixing it with grown, battle hardened men that the problem arises. Barkley was used to swatting opponents aside because he was twice their size. All of a sudden they are as big as him and know the dirty tricks and the player then has to decide whether to grit his teeth and stand up to them or take the money. Lukaku is another one who will bully but if he comes up against good hardened defenders he doesn’t want to know.
If you see Garbutt close up he is not a strong build and without natural aggression he would find it difficult to impose himself on opponents.
Just my own theory- he could be an absolute beast for all I actually know!!

Luke definitely had the potential, he cost Everton £700,000 when we signed him from Leeds after a tribunal set the fee, Leeds were far from happy with that ruling, thought they had been done.

After promising to grow into that potential with some early first team games, particularly with his free kicks and corners he never progressed, sent on loan to different teams without threatening to become the player he might have been.

On a fabulous contract, was it a case of too much too soon,on the few occasions I have seen him he never seemed to try and impress.

As Martin (10) says, he is in the shop window to try and impress another club to give him another contract, I think he has had quite a few chances to do this over the last three seasons, without any takers buying him permentantly, possibly the money he is guaranteed off Everton. The shop window this season is for himself, Everton won’t gain from it, his ( wonderful financial time) at Everton finishes at the end of this season.

Unsworth just won the double and won his 2nd league title in 3 seasons. Prior to that, our last trophy at youth level was when Jamie Milligan scored the winning goal in the FA youth cup. After winning his 2nd title,Unsworth has shown that he has a lot of ability and could well become our next manager should Silva leave. You better hope his No.1 fanboy (Darren Hind) doesn't read your comment or else you will be in trouble lol ;)

Phillip@11, I couldn't disagree with you more. The U23 level is a graveyard for youngsters at every club but the reality is that we are the best at that level. The jump from U23 to first team now is massive and most in the premiership won't make it without several loans if at all. Chelsea have had 30 loanees out I believe. When the club can sign European players with experience, U23 graduates will have little chance. Hopefully this will change when we leave the EU and can start treating them as foreign players again

I forgot to add that the FA Youth Cup win prior to last season was in 1997 which highlights the magnitude of what Unsworth has been doing with the U23s.

I agree that the issue is not at Under-23 level, it is the transition from Under-23 to first team.

Look at the last Under 23 winning team, we had a load of 19- & 20-year-olds who had been developed enough to compete in either the Premier League (Holgate, Davies, Calvert-Lewin, Kenny) or the Championship (Dowell, Williams, Connelly, Robinson, Pennington).

The problem is, none of them (with the exception of Calvert-Lewin and possibly Kenny) have shown massive improvement in the last 2 years since they were 19 or 20.

To get that many players competitive at that level at that age is good going and certainly not a poor reflection on the Under-23 manager.

Instead of attacking me why don't you stay in your own lane as the self appointed Unsworth expert and break down why you don't agree with Philip. You're usually so quick to jump on anyone who says anything against him or his record . ;)

Unsie has won the PL2 twice. However, am I alone in noticing no one else gives a fuck about it? Man City and Chelsea produce legit talents who win the FA Youth Cup and Under 18 Premier League then make a splash at senior level: eg Hudson Odoi, Foden, Sancho etc. We suck at that level but win the U23 league.

Could it be because we utilize overage players like Niasse and Garbutt? Or have a coach who can make a team that is better than the sum of its parts? Good for Unsie, not so good for the club if we are waiting on the u23 to develop individuals good enough for the Premier League versus career “youth” players eg Charsley.
