Porto winger in the frame

| 17/08/2023 14comments  |  Jump to last

According to Fabrizio Romano, Everton are rivalling West Ham with their renewed interest in 22-year-old Gonçalo Borges.

The Blues reportedly failed with a last-ditch attempt to sign Borges in the final hours of the summer 2022 transfer window when Frank Lampard was still boss, with bids of around £8.5m and just over £10m knocked back by Porto.

If Romano is correct, Director of Football Kevin Thelwell is still keen on the Lisbon-born player who primarily plays wide on the right where has played for the bulk of his time coming through the ranks at FC Porto but can also operate on left.

Last season he played 20 times at first-team level without scoring but for Porto B he has 11 goals and 8 assists in 78 appearances.

According to reports in Portugual a year ago, Porto were looking for around £13m for Borges although it is not clear what their expectations would be this time around but Everton could see him as an alternative to Wilfried Gnonto whom they've been trying to sign all summer without any success.

Another bloody winger? What about a centre forward or a creative midfielder or even a solid centre back?

I know this is garbage gossip but I’m sick of seeing us linked to more bloody wingers.

A sign we're giving up on Gnoto, or trying to force Leeds' hand.

They have gotten Harrison so forget about anyone else for the wing position.

We are crying out for a striker as Maupay still doesn't cut it and Chermiti may need time to adjust along with DCL's rehab.

It's about time we beat the Villa but I said that about Fulham but realistically if the defence can stand firm then a point is possible in the Midlands.

They have lost a decent player in Buendia so maybe Everton can take advantage (yeah right ! )

If we’re trying to force Leeds’ hand then this is very clever.

I’d actually prefer Yohan Bakayoko from Holland though

Its a positive that we're looking at a right winger, but surprised we have strong interest in a player who's not even scored one senior goal.

If anyone thinks we need more wingers they need their head checking...

The club needs to stop dicking about and get a striker in now..

No one knows if Beto or Piroe will be successful but chasing wingers isn't the answer...
Get someone in who is fit and ready and get them in ahead of Maupay... let's try and get 9 points on the board before the deadline kicks in...

Agree 100%, Colin.

We need a number 9 ASAP, and a creative midfielder as you said. I wish Thelwell could take a look at Isi Palazón at Rayo Vallecano. Great player IMO.

His youtube highlights (I know, I know, but he is a really great footballer):

Cut our losses on Chermiti and use him as a makeweight for a striker deal

We need a striker and a right winger, and I don't think looking at wingers mean a deal for a No.9 won't be done.

Gavin,

That's why we might be after him. We don't wish to show the other forwards up (tongue-in-cheek).

Soren. He looks like a left-footed Arteta. How old? Well worth a look.

The automatic assumption that any rumour of interest in a player that isn't already considered an out-and-out striker means we aren't looking for one is fairly juvenile.

We don't need more wingers if they are no better than what we already have (and are retaining) but it would be ludicrous to not take every opportunity to improve the team we can field even if the plan is a longer term strategy.

I'm not necessarily advocating this player (who I know nowt about) but he could be an ace provider or fantastic at forming a partnership with his full-back that gets the best out of both. If either were true I'd be happy to have him.

Who?... just up our offer for Gnonto and stop this fucking about like!

Also we need at least one decent Striker too, ASAP.
