Season › 2024-25 › News Tyler Dibling close to joining Everton Anjishnu Roy 22/08/2025 232comments | Jump to last Everton are closing in on signing Tyler Dibling from Southampton as the Toffees’ summer-long search for a right winger seems to be coming to an end. Developments on a deal for the 19-year-old took place quickly. Reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has also given his trademark “Here we go” for the deal! “Verbal agreement at £42M plus sell-on clause to Southampton, long-term deal for Dibling agreed back in July,” Romano tweeted. An imminent agreement has also been reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, Richard Jolly of The Independent, Paul Joyce of The Times and Sky Sports News among others. “The proposed package for Dibling will be worth just over £40M ($54.2M), with the clubs still finalising the details and structure of the deal, which will include a 20% sell-on clause for Southampton,” stated Ornstein in The Athletic. “Personal terms have been agreed in principle but need finalising and, if all goes to plan, the 19-year-old will undergo a medical early next week.” Everton had previously seen three bids rejected by Southampton for their teenage winger, one of the most highly rated attacking prospects in England. It is believed that the Blues had pulled out of the deal over a discrepancy in valuations between the two clubs. However, the Saints have lowered their demands since then, allowing the Toffees to return to the negotiating table. Dibling was left out of Will Still’s squad for Southampton’s first two matches in the Championship but played the final few minutes in the 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town recently. He made 33 Premier League appearances last season and scored two goals. Dibling is expected to slot straight into David Moyes’s starting XI, given that the squad does not have a right winger at the moment. Charly Alcaraz, Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye have deputised in that role with little to no success following the departures of loanees Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom. When the transfer is made official, Dibling will become Everton’s eighth signing of the summer after the club already secured the arrivals of Thierno Barry, Carlos Alcaraz, Adam Aznou, Mark Travers, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Tom King and Jack Grealish. If goes to plan #EFC medical early next week. @TheAthleticFC after @ElBobble Stephen Davies 2 Posted 22/08/2025 at 18:54:26 Southampton have today instigated contact with Everton over Tyler Dibling. Their asking price has come down significantly and both parties are much closer to an agreement. Talks are continuing. [@_pauljoyce Colin Malone 3 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:03:53 Tyler Dibling on his way to Everton Ian Bennett 4 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:11:26 Everton finalising £42M package for Southampton's Tyler Dibling. An agreement in principle includes £6M add-ons which are easily achievable on appearances, and a 20% sell-on clause. Kevin Molloy 5 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:16:51 So we put this deal together just as Tottingham get their fingers burnt on Eze and are looking around for a replacement? This is an extremely unhelpful headline. Nothing now can happen til Monday… where Everton and Spurs are concerned, that's an eternity. I have seen this film before. Sam Hoare 6 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:17:26 That fee is still big but it's similar to what Forest paid for Hutchinson. Dibling is probably behind the former Ipswich man currently but I think has the potential to be better in the long term.Patience will be needed, he's only 19 and wasn't even first choice in a poor Southampton team at times but he looks to have the tools to make it near the very top. Exciting. Mike Gaynes 7 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:20:15 The Athletic confirms the Dibling agreement, says he will undergo medical early next week. Kevin, nothing now can happen till Monday? Why's that? Banker's hours? Jay Harris 8 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:22:53 Pity we didn't get Walker-Peters. They are used to each other's game. Now let's have a quality right-back, Everton. Kevin Molloy 9 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:23:17 Doctors don't work at the weekend, Mike, you should know that. George Cumiskey 10 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:33:55 Loads of attacking players now but no one to score a goal, well too much for a player not really proven in the Premier League.Smells like the Sigurdsson fiasco to me. Kevin Molloy 11 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:35:32 Sigurdsson was nearly 29 and 'meh', George. This kid's fantastic. Ryan Holroyd 12 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:37:16 Fantastic news 💪 Kieran Kinsella 13 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:43:16 Just wait for the next presser…Press: "Moyes, you must be delighted to have made a big signing."Moyes: "Eh? What, the wee lad from Southampton. He is just a boy. He's no ready for first team." Brendan McLaughlin 14 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:44:25 Highly rated 19-year-old signing for Moyes... that'll go down well with some on here. Stuart Sharp 15 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:44:42 I hope he can play right-back. Mick O'Malley 16 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:45:43 Jake agreed but I'd sooner have him come in rather than Michail Antonio who I've seen suggested. Delighted that we are getting the Dibling transfer done, just a right back and some loans to pad the squad out, I still think we'll sign another right sided winger just in case of injuries etc Ian Bennett 17 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:48:10 Just need to be really patient with him if he does sign. Simon Dalzell 18 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:50:54 Fantastic News. I really wanted us to get young Dibbling. Liam Mogan 19 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:52:15 You're probably right, Ian.However, it's all well and good signing for the future, but if we haven't won a game in the first half dozen, then we're probably in a relegation fight and under pressure. Pat Kelly 20 Posted 22/08/2025 at 19:52:38 Ready or not, here we go!!! Paul Smith 21 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:11:00 Some mad comments on here about relegation. It's really exciting getting Dibling... well done, Everton. Colin Glassar 22 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:19:59 £42M for the kid. Get in!! Now Bissouma, Justin, Vardy and Jeremy Bowen and were sorted. Plus Richarlison and 1-2 more loanees. Sean Kelly 23 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:22:03 Dibling another one for Moyess “not ready yet” bench! Les Moorcroft 24 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:27:28 Can't place him myself. Derek Knox 25 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:28:07 Well, that's a shock! Didn't expect that to happen. :-)Happy about this… but we need more signings to be competitive! Brendan McLaughlin 26 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:30:28 Swear to God.If there was a pill introduced to cure cancer tomorrow... someone on ToffeeWeb would be moaning about all the redundant equipment. Neil Copeland 27 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:31:25 Colin, don't forget Mbappe and Lamal. Daniel A Johnson 28 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:31:46 He will probably spend the next 13 matches on the bench as he's not ready.Once Moyes and Irvine have got hold of this lad, he will be scared to pass the halfway line. Colin Glassar 29 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:31:58 Just make sure theres paper in the fax machine. Someone has a desk full of biros and the telex is still in working condition. You never know with Everton. Paul Tran 30 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:32:14 Mike, it's a Bank Holiday weekend in England. (Not up here, mind!) We'll be waiting till Tuesday. I wouldn't want him making his debut against Mansfield, they'd kick him off the pitch. Lee Courtliff 31 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:33:27 I was worried about overpaying for this lad, especially after our recent history. But, with the lack of signings at RW or RB coupled with our dire performance on Monday... now I'm just relieved we've signed him. It does sound like a lot of money, but if he proves to be a decent Premier League standard player that we get 7/8 years of service out of, then it'll be money well spent. And if he develops then we'll make a tidy profit on him. Si Pulford 32 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:34:02 Jesus, the negativity. Moyes bought Rooney through. What amazing examples of youth did he hold back exactly? Keen to hear about all the young world beaters we had. Or have now. Colin Glassar 33 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:35:48 Can we get Estevao while were at it? Bill Gall 34 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:37:44 Looks like Graham Potter may be available soon. Ian Bennett 35 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:38:12 He looks class, Colin. Gave it away for the West Ham goal. But he looks a real talent.Pace, balance and can lift his head up. Gerry Quinn 36 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:39:18 Si P - agree with you and the total negativity – but it is one thing you need to get used to on here !!!! Josh Horne 37 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:39:48 We need to roll the dice on a few genuine big prospects, this is exciting. Martin Berry 38 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:41:17 The dabble on Dibling is a bit of a gamble, but he appears to have all the tools to be another Gazza type midfield player. He runs with the ball and players seem to bounce off him. Russell Martin's assessment of the player is outstanding. At 19, he could be a couple of years off his potential, so patience is going to be needed by the "faithful". Hopefully he can show enough to do a job on the right.I wouldn't be against another right-sided player on loan as cover, the experienced been around but solid type who could do a job as we need it. Right-back and an enforcer in midfield please, now, Everton! Colin Glassar 39 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:42:09 Elton Welsby on Twitter comparing Dibling to Lamine Jamal. I think Eltons been hitting the bottle. James Marshall 40 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:44:28 Now watch TW go into meltdown as the transfer drags on till the middle/end of next week. Also, whoever plays right back is going to have a job on their hands because Dibling doesn't do a great deal of defending. Gavin Johnson 41 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:49:12 I'm really happy we're signing him. More so than the Grealish signing. It's a lot of money but not in the scheme of things with some of the crazy prices this summer. Looks as though Everton pulled the trigger because we were worried about Spurs or Palace coming in. Because for what we're paying this could have been agreed a few weeks ago. Neil Gribbin 42 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:50:00 James M, if its not completed by 05:59 BST, there are going to be baying crowds festooned with pitchforks and mayhem in their minds marching down to BMD….. Raymond Fox 43 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:50:08 I thought we would land him eventually.Expensive but does seem a bit special, hope it work out. Ted Donnelly 45 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:51:37 Thank fuck for that. Now let's move on. UTFT!! Liam Mogan 46 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:54:17 Neil 21 - mobs with pitchforks are underrated imo. They tend to get things done. Especially when they set things on fire.Unlike Everton's transfer working group Colin Glassar 47 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:54:54 Still not done yet but he's expected to be at Finch Farm for his medical on Tuesday. Apparently, we don't work on Bank Holidays. Bobby Thomas 48 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:55:20 The fee is heavy. But to the current version of Everton, with our status and credibility shredded, he is worth it. Rob Halligan 49 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:56:14 His medical will take place in a private hospital, paid for by the club. Im hearing its due to start tomorrow. Neil Thomas 51 Posted 22/08/2025 at 20:58:48 Yes, yes, and yes. This lad is something else. Out of all the wingers linked, this is the one that I wanted. Mike Powell 52 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:01:42 I hope this is true, looks a player, now for CM and RB, and things could be looking up. Oh and 3 points on Sunday. COYB Neil Copeland 53 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:02:10 It sounds like TFG have taken note of Moyes's concerns which I think is very encouraging.I hope that Moyyes fully realises the expectation for him to deliver will rise significantly now.Looks like we are building a side for the future or at least looking to bank an investment. Neil Lawson 54 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:05:23 Very pleased if he does sign but still time for Palace to spoil the show. My concern though is whether he is £45M better than Harrison Armstrong. Colin Glassar 55 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:05:25 Good to hear that, Rob.Two completely different players, Neil. Matt Byrne 56 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:06:42 I just hope Moyes wants this and he personally identified the player and it is not some clueless transfer executive pushing it. For that money, you'd hope for a Kanchelskis, 95-96. Please don't say he needs time to bed in. Let's hope he doesn't end up being John Oster, 97-98, skilled but a lightweight with no end product. Ernie Baywood 57 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:08:11 He couldn't be more the type of player I want to see at Everton. Talented, confident, young and with a very, very high ceiling. Plus he plays in a position we desperately need a player. The fee is the only question mark. Buying young guarantees some resale but Dibling feels like a bit more of a gamble than some young players. This could be a watershed moment for us. The moment when we signed a player who went on to be something really special. Or it could be a new level of disaster. But at least there's hope again. Now we need to figure out the full backs because they've got some great talent ahead of them. Mal van Schaick 58 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:10:08 Get this deal done and move on to a right-back and either a striker or midfielder. Stuart Sharp 59 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:14:59 Exciting if it comes off. Have only seen glimpses of quality myself, but I trust some of those who say his potential is huge. Not as pacey as I'd like on the wing, but obviously very talented. Almost past caring about the money because all the fees this window seem to be plucked out of the air. Look what the scum got for Darwen N. David West 60 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:20:36 Excited about this one. The money is what it is, we want young hungry progressing players then you have to take z gamble. I'm hoping they have crunched all his numbers and stats, it's a big fee for a young lad, he's OK putting in a decent shift and Southampton getting a draw, he's stepping up now. He needs to be ready, hit the ground running and show what he's got. We are crying out for a bit of flair and pacell. All he has to do is literary beat a man on the outside and stick a cross in and he's improved us. Welcome Tyler. The Everton waddle!! Andy Walker 61 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:34:19 This doesn't just mean we'll have a quality player on the right, but also we won't have to play another player out of position on the right, freeing them up to play in their best position, e.g. Alcaraz. It's a win win.Well done, Moyesy, for pushing the Board. Oliver Molloy 62 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:35:40 He's not signed yet! Jake FitzGerald 63 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:35:53 What a timely lift for the club ahead of the most important day of Everton's history in decades. Shame some of the miserable auld arses in here won't join in the joy if we pull off a result tomorrow. Bobby Thomas 64 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:36:09 Matt #53,What are you on about in your second paragraph? Why has Dibing got to be immediately at Kanchelskis levels? He's 19 years old. From memory, Kanchelskis was about 27 years old when he signed. He was a European class player who was at his peak. He'd cost about £70M today. £45M isn't that big these days anyway. It's just big for us.Get a grip. Brendan McLaughlin 65 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:36:45 Moyes's outbursts do seem to be having the desired effect. Ted Donnelly 66 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:39:13 I hope TFG and Co are watching this West Ham game... it screams "Get the signings done and get them done now!"Otherwise, we could quite easily in the same boat as them. Urgency is the key! Sam Hoare 67 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:40:14 The price is big but smaller than Hutchinson, who I think Dibling can be better than in time.I also think he's a little quicker than some realise and he's certainly not lightweight like John Oster! But he will need some time to bed in, like any 19-year-old in a new team would. He'll make mistakes and try to dribble when he shouldn't. He'll lose the ball in bad spots and won't track back as much as Harrison did. But he'll also get the fans off their feet at times. He's a £100M player in the making if developed properly. Jim Wilson 68 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:46:01 And the essential right back we should have signed 8 weeks ago? We'll make do.First home game at Bramley-Moore Dock? We'll wing it.Incompetence of the highest order. Svein-Roger Jensen 69 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:48:15 Dibling could orchestrate attacks from deeper areas or out-wide. He's not one for safe, lateral passes; instead, at Southampton he did advance the ball, breaking lines with his vision and execution. His playmaking is about progression, moving the team upfield, and creating opportunities where none seemed to exist. Exactly what we been missing! David Williams 70 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:51:22 Brilliant signing. UTFT. No, bring back Tony Marsh. ToffeeWeb Gold. Colin Glassar 71 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:51:23 Ted, I hope TFG are watching Paqueta and Bowen. Both superb players who Moyes knows well. Peter Moore 72 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:51:48 Very pleased with getting Dibling. Please, no last minute hitches. If he is a genuine winger rather than better as a Number 10, then great. His skills mean he could do both I imagine. Also great. We seem to have surprising depth at the Number 10 position, playmaker. Grealish, McNeil, Ndiaye are all arguably best in that role. Can we get those 3 and Dibling all on the pitch at the same time? I suspect too attack focused and lacking defensive strength and bite and aggression in the middle of the park. KDH and Gana both are starters when fit in the middle I expect, so likely McNeil benched. One Up front: Barry, Beto or Chermiti (draw straws, no clue which will fire on any day) Number 10: GrealishNdiaye (LM), Dewsbury-Hall (CM), Gana (CM), Dibling (RM).If these can gel and become a well oiled unit, game on. UTFT. Tony Abrahams 73 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:52:51 I didnt know anything about this kid, but when it was pointed out to me that he was a very good player, during the last ever game at Goodison, I watched him closely. He never did much but I liked the fact that he was trying to do things, and I liked the way he was getting angry with himself and a little bit spiky with the opposition, when the things he was trying never quite came off.Its a very big fee for a young player, but looking at a few little quips, he seems to be skilful on the ball, should add a lot of craft, and he also looks to be very aggressive when he has got the ball at his feet.Another very important aspect is that hes another signing that should give everyone a lift, and because its been that long since we have had it, hopefully hes going to be a player who helps bring the feel-good factor, back into the crowd 🤞 Les Moorcroft 74 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:52:55 Dream on Colin. Christy Ring 75 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:53:43 Promising, more to come? Josh Horne 76 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:58:27 Expecting us to follow this up with Jack Harrison on loan as an anti-Dibling. Svein-Roger Jensen 77 Posted 22/08/2025 at 21:58:50 Dibling represents the future of the Premier League. His combination of creativity, tactical intelligence, and defensive diligence marks him out as a player with the potential to shape games. As he continues to develop, honing his ability to influence matches in the final third could elevate him from a promising talent to a mainstay in the league. not just a player but a growing tactical. Colin Glassar 78 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:00:30 Thats all I do, Lee. Bill Gall 79 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:09:54 Has he officially signed yet, ? Steve Shave 80 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:12:13 This is excellent news ! Annika Herbert 81 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:12:19 It's just turned 5 am in the Philippines and I just got out of bed and checked the transfer latest expecting very little Everton news. Then I see it!Finally, some news I can get excited about — and it's got my blood pumping a whole lot quicker than usual at this time in the morning. Finally, we have a right-winger and one with very high promise. Three or four more players of good quality, especially right-back, and the transfer window looks a whole lot better.Credit where it's due, so kudos to the transfer team for getting this one over the line. James Marshall 82 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:15:28 Annika. It isn't over the line. It's just being reported we've come to a verbal agreement with Southampton over a fee and verbal terms with the player.Nothing is guaranteed at this point. Sorry to piss on your adobo at 5 am! Mike Corcoran 83 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:18:42 He plays like a young left-footed Grealish. I can't wait to see how he does. Andrew Merrick 84 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:22:28 Yes, it's a big fee for a young player. This boy is already good; he will get better. If he wants this, so do I.Bit of a gamble… yes. Do we stick and regret? No, twist and go for him, Blues — tomorrow — get it done!!! Robert Williams 85 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:29:39 This has got me more interested than the Grealish loan. Give him a 5-year deal. Tom Bowers 86 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:32:16 Okay let's not get carried away. The lad has potential but, like may players, they need to fit into a squad to get the best out of them, and I worry that Moyes expects all players to do their best work in their own half, which certainly didn't happen against Leeds.Given that Everton are almost impotent in an attacking sense, I see Dibling as a right-wingback – but not a starter – as Grealish found out.We need intensity from the start… but Moyes doesn't seem to generate that. Derek Thomas 87 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:32:30 Ian @17; At £42Million, I hope you had your tongue firmly in cheek with that remark. Paul Kossoff 88 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:36:06 The BBC have said that the signing is close:Everton are closing in on the £40m signing of Southampton midfielder Tyler Dibling. The England Under-21 international has been the subject of three offers from the Toffees this summer that were rejected. But sources have told BBC Sport that talks between the two clubs have now restarted.Dibling, 19, has attracted interest from a number of Premier League clubs after scoring twice in 33 appearances last season.Right back, please – then I'll be happy. Robert Williams 89 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:36:11 Okay, that does it — I predict that the 2027-28 season will see us in the Champions League. Daft? You bet! John Raftery 90 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:37:27 I think Dibling will prove to be a great signing if the deal goes through. I liked the way he tried to make something happen playing in a very weak team at Goodison in May. With the signing of Grealish, Alcaraz, Dewsbury-Hall and hopefully Dibling, it feels like in 2025 we have at last injected the squad with some much-needed attacking quality. Paul Kossoff 91 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:39:08 Robert 89. Not as daft as Leicester City winning the Premier League in 2016. Shaun McGough 92 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:40:31 Made up TFG getting going now, just a bit worried over it only being an agreement and medical next week. Only the price is agreed, which leaves time for other clubs to gazump the deal after seeing what happened with Eze this week and Sky showing similar gazumps over the years. I hope Southampton have taken down payment and spent it, or someone buys Tyler earplugs just in case. Jake FitzGerald 93 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:46:44 Tom #86, Phew, thank god you came along and stopped us all actually feeling positive about actually signing proper talent the likes we haven't seen for years. How about popping a champagne cork, you miserable fuckers! Paul Kossoff 94 Posted 22/08/2025 at 22:56:54 Correct me if I'm wrong, but no deal was agreed by either club in July, that's why the transfer didn't go through.Am I missing something? Billy Shears 95 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:12:41 We have now a right-winger… finally!Deal done, according to a few sites on YouTube, medical taking place over the weekend.A great signing... more needed though! Nicolas Piñon 96 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:23:01 He'll be Tyler Dribbling!!!! 😂😂 Kieran Kinsella 97 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:56:25 He looks like John Oster. Paul Kossoff 98 Posted 22/08/2025 at 23:57:21 You do know Dibling is left-footed, don't you? We still don't have a right-footed player to play on the right wing.So now we have two wingers playing out of position. Grealish is right-footed and plays on the left, so he can cut inside, which limits the crosses to a striker. Dibling, on the other hand, is left-footed, and prefers to play on the right, so he can cut inside, which, sorry to repeat myself, limits the crosses to a striker. Paul Kossoff 99 Posted 22/08/2025 at 00:04:03 Brenden 26. Always seems to be some illiterate prat on here who just has to use the c word to explain himself, because he's to fucking thick to think of another word. Today Brenda, that prat is you! Lester Yip 100 Posted 22/08/2025 at 00:04:34 Paul, in such setup, the full-backs are expected to over or underlap to cross or shoot. We are yet to have such full-backs good at that. Not saying Dibling is not a good player. But I feel the £6M add-on and the 20% sell-on clause is really not a good deal. This is a high-risk, high-reward punt. Now we take on the risk… yet the reward is cut way less. Annika Herbert 101 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:07:05 James @ 82, it's okay, even though it's not actually confirmed yet. The fact we have actually agreed a deal has brightened my morning. I can go back to being disappointed if the deal doesn't go through. Paul Kossoff 102 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:08:22 Lester, I just don't get it, why can't he play on the left sometimes and cross with his left foot? Same with Grealish. Dale Self 103 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:27:56 Yes to Estevao and Paqueta.Svein--Roger 69 and 77, those are among the most constructive posts of yours I have read. Get in.About halfway through but was so excited I had to write something. Bill Watson 104 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:31:21 I'll be following ToffeeWeb comments over the next few days to discover just how overpriced and crap Dibling really is! Dale Self 105 Posted 23/08/2025 at 00:43:31 So we may be looking for a veteran at right-back since Dibling may not be tracking back effectively. Once again, I would like to suggest Tomiyasu. The beer tastes good tonight, eh? Lester Yip 106 Posted 23/08/2025 at 01:29:22 I think Grealish plays inverted because his best preference is to work in tight spaces and squeeze a through-pass or shoot, instead of a more traditional winger who drives down to the by-line and crosses? So I guess your question is: Why do we pick a similar type of winger on both sides? I think Moyes is thinking of his success with Bowen operating as an inverted right winger who cuts inside onto his powerful left foot to shoot or link up with teammates. Perhaps Moyes wants to replicate that? Ashley Roberts 107 Posted 23/08/2025 at 01:43:05 I know the lad is only 19 but looks to have great control of the ball and goes past players with skill. Not sure I understand we have paid over the odds. Didn't the bar codes pay £40M for Gordon who is a one-trick pony and possesses no natural trickery other than speed? So I am thinking this is a fair price. Wish he was playing Sunday. Jay Harris 108 Posted 23/08/2025 at 02:18:24 It seems prices for players have gone up significantly this window, with very few quality players going for less than £40M.It seems a lot but, if we can get enough quality in to get us in the top half of the table at £3M a place — 10 places higher gives us an extra £30M — plus if we are lucky and get the extra bodies in to earn a place in Europe, that generates even more.Speculate to accumulate, TFG, please! Steve Brown 109 Posted 23/08/2025 at 02:59:55 Now another right-winger, right back, No 6, and a striker.Beto or McNeil to be sold. Ian McAvoy 110 Posted 23/08/2025 at 03:07:14 Dibling is class if we can get him. He's a reincarnation of Le Tissier. Seriously. Gavin Johnson 111 Posted 23/08/2025 at 03:13:54 Kieran #97 Looks like John Oster, if Oster had ever filled out. Fortunately, Dibling has the build for a modern-day Premier League player. I remember when we signed Oster and watching him in a pre-season game and thinking he played like Trevor Steven, lol! Gavin Johnson 112 Posted 23/08/2025 at 03:47:18 Who would people have out of Hayden Hackney, or Bissouma from Spurs as the deep lying midfielder for the next possible signing?Hackney seems like a shrewd signing from Boro and will have sell-on value, but Bissouma is Prem ready which would appeal to Moyes.I used to think Bissouma was amazing at Brighton and I thought he'd be a real coup for Spurs... But he has apparently had a lot of disciplinary problems at Spurs for arriving late for training, and Frank wants shut of him.The biggest story coming out out of Spurs was Ange making a fuss of Bissouma in front of the first-team squad, saying he could be a leader and lead by example, and then Bissouma turned up late the next day. Would Moyes take a £10-£15M punt on him??There's also Soucek for a similar fee, who could chip in with a few goals. Kieran Kinsella 113 Posted 23/08/2025 at 04:27:48 Gavin,I'd never seen Oster but, based on reports, I remember being quite excited Kendall had unearthed another gem… Lol. Likewise, I assumed we'd struck gold with Paul Holmes, John O'Kane and Gareth Farrelly – such was my youthful naivety and faith in Howard. Annika Herbert 114 Posted 23/08/2025 at 04:56:20 Soucek is exactly what we don't need. No sell-on value, very little mobility, and when he is mobile, extremely slow. With pace needed in the team, Soucek would offer the exact opposite. He can't even get into a very poor West Ham team. Paul Hewitt 115 Posted 23/08/2025 at 05:23:50 Bill @104. He's definitely overpriced. Danny O'Neill 116 Posted 23/08/2025 at 06:47:44 If this gets finalised, then I hope he is as good as those who have watched more of him than me suggest.I don't think he will be straight in the starting line-up next week, even if then. Practically no pre-season, not training with the first-team squad, I think he will be assessed by Moyes and his coaching staff first.Still, positive moves. It's taken longer than we would have wanted, but I think the club has stood its ground. "There is the offer, let us know when you want to talk." And by the reporting, Southampton came back to us with lower demands. It sounds very TFG, not too dissimilar from the takeover, when they walked away initially. Terry Downes 117 Posted 23/08/2025 at 06:55:36 Had our pants down here and smacked our arse while they were down? Hope to be proved wrong… Brendan McLaughlin 118 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:41:46 Paul #99Does Brenda win a prize?" to fucking thick"... pot and kettle spring to mind. Colin Glassar 119 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:41:59 I know a lot of Everton fans, accustomed to years of bargain basement transfer dealings, get a nosebleed when we buy an expensive, young player, but £40M these days is peanuts in the wider scheme of things.I remember when we bought Yakubu (£12M?) people were worrying it was way too much. Dibling will be worth it, you'll see. Stop fretting, for fuck's sake!!! Steve O’Shaughnessy 120 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:52:04 Some classic ToffeeWeb stuff... absolutely love the variety of opinion. I'm a fan of Moyes but can see his shortcomings and the comments about Dibling sitting on the bench while he gets Premier League ready to play made me laugh out loud — I think there is a pretty good chance that is what will happen! :) At least it won't be Harrison keeping him on the bench this season. Steve O’Shaughnessy 121 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:54:43 A couple of loans would round out a decent transfer window. Lots of players released and the players that have come in are all an upgrade. It may be asking too much to get all positions covered in one window. Ian Bennett 122 Posted 23/08/2025 at 07:55:03 Derek 87 - not at all. The lad hasn't set the fee himself, and he's only played a relatively small amount of minutes in one season at 19. He could be brilliant from the off, or more likely for a young winger, who is massively inconsistent. We need to be patient, and ideally have another right-winger to rotate him with. The fans were short in patience on Fellaini, Moise Kean etc, which worries me as to will it work.Getting in a player like Grealish to work with him is a good move in my opinion. Both will be on the same wavelength and will see the game quicker than perhaps others. Nathan Ford 123 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:16:38 Big fan of this signing young with huge potential. He'll play wide for the first season whilst learning and making the odd mistake but in the future will be moved to a central position. In a year or 2 he will gliding through a packed midfield passing players with ease. Love this and really hope he signs Ian Jones 124 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:21:16 But what are his stats like over 90 minutes? Forget the goals, assists. How many successful take-ons, key passes, expected successful dribbles, successful putting on of socks and looks of confusion does he currently have recorded? Paul Smith 125 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:40:58 What's his AG over 90 + assists and conversions per M2 when played central rather than inverted on the right and do we have the funds to splash out on this potentially special player ? We could get a few loans instead. Andrew Ellams 126 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:42:10 What is wrong with some Evertonians? Just seen a comment elsewhere from someone who would apparently rather see us going after Vardy and Brownhills than this lad. It's like a weird kind of Stockholm Syndrome with the relegation zone. Andrew Bentley 127 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:54:46 Agree with you Andrew @126. The knee jerk despair after our first game and writing off signings before weve even made them seems to be so prominent these days - not just Evertonians!Everything is a crisis. Last year I watched him play and thought he looked special - always hoped wed sign him but thought a Utd, Tottenham, Chelsea etc would sign him up. We should be delighted that a young prospect is keen to come to us and he could be something really special. Give him time as well - dont write him off. We are so bad at demanding instant results and performances - look at Branthwaite, after his loan to PSV and playing a full season of development there he came back and once he found his place he blossomed. Lets also put everything in perspective. Despite the media, the league is not won or lost in game week 1. The old adage of the league shouldnt be looked at for at least 10 games still applies. And for Everton (along with half the other clubs in the prem) lets judge the transfer window and signings at the end of the month when it actually closes. Due to the nature of it always closing after the season starts we cant judge the team until mid Sept sadly.Keep calm and carry on……Oh, and remember the majestic new stadium we have now. There is so much to be positive about - just give it time folks. For those attending tomorrow - back the team and the manager to the hilt and dont look for others to start the singing and the chants, everyone needs to take responsibility and drive us to victory. Remember there are thousands of us who are desperate to be there who havent got tickets so do it for us! Phil Wood 128 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:54:50 Takes a drink of tea, sits back and awaits the deal being hijacked.Call me cynical. Hope I am very wrong. Ian Jones 129 Posted 23/08/2025 at 08:57:52 Andrew@126, I'd happily see Vardy, as well as Dibling. Vardy still has a certain quality about him, a little bit of narkiness that I thought Maupay might have brought. On a one year contract, I feel Vardy would be a useful addition, a back-up more than a starter. As someone said somewhere, how that would play out with the Rooney/Vardy situation would be interesting but we're bigger than that. Club first before personal stuff. Hugh Jenkins 130 Posted 23/08/2025 at 09:10:35 Phil (128) - Apparently, this time, it is us that has done the hijacking! Its reported that Crystal Palace agreed this deal with Southampton on Thursday then we jumped in and matched it.Rumour has it that the CP Manager is livid. George Cumiskey 131 Posted 23/08/2025 at 09:25:27 Let's hope he isn't sat on the bench for the first few games, we need him on the pitch ASAP. Ray Roche 132 Posted 23/08/2025 at 09:41:47 Hugh, I don't see how Palace could be ‘livid', Everton have been chasing Dibling long before Palace showed any interest and made an offer. They've only stirred themselves since the Eze situation. Anyway, when he's wearing the shirt, I'll believe it!! Mike Keating 133 Posted 23/08/2025 at 09:54:32 Why do we have to wait until Tuesday for a medical?Hospital staff and footballers work weekends and bank holidays, for fuck's sake!I'd be more worried about Levy diving in after being humiliated by Arteta. Clive Rogers 134 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:05:51 Ian, 129, Maupay did bring narkiness, but it was against the club and the fans unfortunately. Jerome Shields 135 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:08:06 Bringing in players like Dibling is part of the strategic plan being followed by the transfer team to lower the average age of the squad, with a future development plan. Paul Hewitt 136 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:19:19 Mike#134. I've heard he's having his medical today. Mike Keating 137 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:32:50 Hope you're right, Paul! Robert Williams 138 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:40:07 In an ideal world, other than right-back, what other positions would we like filling ? Josh Horne 139 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:41:19 New manager? Tony Abrahams 140 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:42:09 If it's true that Palace had jumped ahead of us, then this might be a little example for TFG that buying players is a lot different from buying football clubs.Maybe the kid had already agreed to sign for Everton and he had agreed to sit tight until Southampton were prepared to change their valuation. Although it's just speculation, if it's true, I just hope he ends up having the same type of Everton career as the last player we high-jacked from Palace — but with a few trophies that the efforts of little Timmy Cahill deserved. Andrew Ellams 141 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:44:03 Southampton saying the medical will be over the weekend. Ian Jones 142 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:45:48 Clive, agreed when you put it like that. Jim Wilson 143 Posted 23/08/2025 at 10:59:18 Robert @ 138, Other than a right-back, I would like a utility defender who can play any position across the back 4. James Garner is doing a job at full back but I like him in midfield. Raymond Fox 144 Posted 23/08/2025 at 11:09:59 If he becomes our player, I'll be as pleased as anyone, but don't expect too much off the lad when he does get a start. He has a lot to contend with all at once, price tag, new teammates, high expectations from us, etc.On the other hand, he might be a revelation and a natural and sail on without any bother at all. I very much hope so. Andy Meighan 145 Posted 23/08/2025 at 11:50:16 Brendan @26.Brilliant comment, I honestly think most of our fans would like us to go for the likes of Soucek etc. This is a great signing if it comes off but let's give the kid time to bed in, we can't expect miracles. Now let's see if we can get 3 or 4 more in.At last, things are beginning to look up. Derek Knox 146 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:06:48 Tony A, for what it's worth, how de we know what goes on behind the scenes, other than rumours, etc ? However it was stated somewhere that he DID want to come to Everton. Don't ask where it was because I can't recall and as I said there are so many stories and rumours flying around. We can't blame Southampton for wanting the best deal either, if he turns out to be as good as predicted. we may have a bargain in today's ridiculously high priced world. After all, we more-or-less did the same with Branthwaite when a few were sniffing round.I hope he turns out to be the player we believe he can become, the likes of Grealish and Ndiaye (although not much older) could be great mentors for him. After Monday night's disappointing performance, and after seeing KDH in the flesh against Roma, where I thought he was 'class' he did not seem the player he was a few days before. Was it because the whole team was a mis-match, or was he playing in a different role ? Paul Tran 147 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:28:04 Saints fan I know rates him very highly, says he's as good as prospect as Bale was. Also says he's apparently a quiet, introverted kid off the pitch, so he'll need a bit of looking after in that regard.Very exciting, though I'll believe it when the signing video hits my inbox! Sean Kearns 148 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:41:08 It's all good having class wingers like Grealish and Dibling, but when they look up to cross or pass the ball they will see bloody Beto, for Christ's sake — the ball fucking bounces off him! Get Vardy in asap!!!!!… Barry has to be given a run of games. He looks like more of the same to be honest but I'll give the big lad a chance. Christy Ring 150 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:46:44 Palace and Spurs were interested in Dibling, but I think he wanted to come to us. Can I just say I thought he was right-footed? We need another No 6; Hackney for £20M, a striker, and two full-backs please. Bob Parrington 151 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:51:10 It looks like the Dibling deal is now in our hands. So, sorry Palace, look elsewhere.Next please. I agree with those who back a freebie with Vardy. Good squad addition IMO.Why is there so much negativity on here? Go buy a bottle of Monkey Shoulder to drown the sorrows! Eric Myles 152 Posted 23/08/2025 at 12:58:44 If he's that good why weren't one of the Big Six in for him?Seems expensive for a lad for the U-21s. Ian Wilkins 153 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:04:44 Dibling will need patience. A prospect for sure, strong for his age, technically excellent. Tactically and defensively naive (perhaps not surprising at 19), doesn't work hard enough on defensive duties. Not my views, view of Saints supporting family. We will need to give him time, forgive some mistakes and hopefully watch him blossom. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have another right-wing option as cover. He didn't play every game for Saints. Christy Ring 154 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:06:34 Eric #152, In all fairness, a lot of excellent players have joined clubs outside the so-called Top 6. Why didn't the Red Shite sign Bournemouth's left-back before them? Why didn't Arsenal keep Eze? They're just 2 examples. I see City's left-back is off injured, Ake on, might scupper any deal, if we are interested. Derek Knox 155 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:10:15 I have had a sneaky feeling for a while that Patterson may be used as a makeweight for Rangers' Hamza Igamane. With Thelwell now there, it could happen. It would make sense as he seemed to be good playing right-back for them and Scotland. Depending on what value they place on Patterson, it was alleged Rangers wanted £25M for Igamane (they only paid around £1.7M) it could prove a decent and doable deal. Beto could be sold on, probably at a loss, to accommodate. Still need a good midfielder (Hayden Hackney, Yves Bissouma) and a right-winger (Kubo, Fatawu, Fofana) and right-back (preferably one that can be used in a few positions). Not asking a lot, am I? :-) Ian Bennett 156 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:12:47 Ndiaye could play as a false 9. Michael Keane's played as a false 5 for years, so anything is possible. Mark Taylor 157 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:14:04 To answer Eric's point and to put this transfer into context, it is because the big 6 are less likely to take a chance on a player with minimal Premier League credentials and they can afford for us to take the risk and just buy him if he comes good. The exception to that might have been Chelsea but he has already done that and got the t-shirt from there, lasting only a few months. The positives are he is the type of player profile we should be after, lots of upside, and most important he plays in a position we are desperate to fill. The negatives are or may be, that our desperation has probably led us to overpay – I can tell you the Southampton fans think this is good business for them – and that in terms of skills, he is not known for tracking back and is very one-footed (left).Hence the need for a really good right-back who can also overlap and cross becomes critical. Phil Wood 158 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:17:07 Hugh 130I'm glad to be wrong. Cheers! Steve Brown 159 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:52:46 Andrew @ 127, we have been in crisis for the last 4 years.2 PSR points deductions, repeated relegation struggles, not likely to continue as a going concern if we went down, absent owner and board, selling most players who had transfer value. Almost bought by 777 and Textor. Need I go on?It is perfectly natural for supporters to be sceptical, anxious, stressed or outright annoyed at the slow progress of the transfer window and the terrible performances in pre-season and against Leeds. And its not your place to tell them to think otherwise. Phil Wood 160 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:59:32 Off topic I know but how crap do City look? Ian Bennett 161 Posted 23/08/2025 at 13:59:37 James Justin out of the Leicester squad. Everton bound? Andrew Ellams 162 Posted 23/08/2025 at 14:06:06 Eric @ 152 because they are in the business of instant stars these days. Players who sell shirts on day 1. Raymond Fox 163 Posted 23/08/2025 at 14:14:46 Steve @ 159, Andrew is perfectly entitled to post what he thinks is true.Heavens forbid to intimate that not all Evertonians are beacons of sweetness and light! Nigel Scowen 164 Posted 23/08/2025 at 14:34:11 Ian @161,Think Leeds are favourites for James Justin. Also, I think he may have picked up an injury which could explain his absence from the Leicester squad. Rob Halligan 165 Posted 23/08/2025 at 14:38:15 Dibling not in the Southampton squad for today's game against Stoke. Michael Bennet 166 Posted 23/08/2025 at 15:20:55 Steve Brown, take a bow, sir. I hate all the wokey dokey Everton fans being overly positive even about Beto who I can't stand because he is total shite — and I won't apologise… and nor should anyone else. Jake FitzGerald 167 Posted 23/08/2025 at 15:27:12 So, not being relentlessly negative is “wokey dokey”. Stunning insight. Dale Self 168 Posted 23/08/2025 at 15:40:55 To some extent, the banter is low-level entertainment. I think it is when opinions are challenged with introductions like "what is wrong with some Evertonians?" or phrases like "wokey dokey" that it typically gets out of hand, and not about the football issue. Keep it English, don't act like Yanks. Steve Brown 169 Posted 23/08/2025 at 15:41:56 Raymond, I agree that he is perfectly entitled to give an opinion. He is not entitled to tell us what to think.“Keep calm and carry on”… is that for the mantra for the last 30 years? Or the next 30 years?Perhaps a better mantra for the future is to call things exactly as they are, and demand better. Standards must improve. Jake FitzGerald 170 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:01:19 “Calling things exactly as they are” is an opinion, Steve. Jack Convery 171 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:03:46 I notice James Justin is not in the team nor on the bench for Leicester City. Our new right-back? James Marshall 172 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:07:13 Jack,James Justin picked up an injury so hasn't been playing. He also appears to be going to Leeds anyway. Andrew Clare 173 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:19:15 Some of these people need to look up what ‘woke' means. As an Evertonian for many years, I think we have every right to criticise the manager and the team.Blimey, we've had decades of awful football — we should moan. There is nothing wrong with being ‘woke'. Peter Mitchell 174 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:23:41 Andrew - unless I missed it, the issue on this thread is that anyone remotely positive about Everton at the moment is being accused of being "woke" — not the other way around! I, personally, am proud to be "woke" in this case. Derek Knox 175 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:28:33 Andrew @ 173, I tend to agree there with you, these are professionals, getting paid extremely well to play for, and hopefully entertain the paying fans. Who are increasingly getting charged more and more each season, whether it be tickets, merchandise, or whatever. If you paid a lot of money to see a show or opera and they were absolutely dreadful, fluffing lines, wearing steel toe-capped boots for ballet, most would ask for a refund, or express their annoyance somehow. Why should football (in today's times) be any different? Andrew Clare 176 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:33:48 Peter,I consider myself ‘woke' too. I care about the club. I think I have been misunderstood. The people who are eternally optimistic are great but in this case they are the reason we suffered the Moyes - Kenwright years of mediocrity. That wiped out Everton as contenders.‘Woke' has been used incorrectly to describe them. Peter Mitchell 177 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:37:49 Okay, Andrew! However, I am not sure how being optimistic resulted in the Kenwright years. Supporters have very little say in how clubs are run and by whom. Also, those Moyes - Kenwright years turned out to be far, far better than the subsequent more than a decade of relegation scrapping under a succession of different managers and a different owner. Mike Gaynes 178 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:42:25 People who reflexively use the word “woke” as a slur say far more about themselves than they do about the people they are targeting. Mick O'Malley 179 Posted 23/08/2025 at 16:57:58 Mike agreed, woke is a badge of honour as far as I'm concerned, I'd consider myself "woke". Jake FitzGerald 180 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:05:04 I was woke before it was even invented. Michael Boardman 181 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:11:46 I see Dibling is not anywhere near Southampton's defeat to Stoke today.I also note Eze has gone to Arsenal. At the risk of sounding "woke", I do wonder. Peter Moore 182 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:14:11 I woke up this morning. Kevin Molloy 183 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:16:55 'Woke' is for me definitely a criticism. Throwing out merit, replacing it with quotas, equals disaster. Just consider its application to Everton, imagine we thought 'actually for this season, we're not going to bother with trying to discern who is the best, we are going to allocate who plays in the team according to quotas based on gender and race'. What would the drop off be, 80%? Well in our wisdom, we've applied this khamikaze logic to our whole society. That's why a lot of people can't stand it. I remember Trudeau being asked why half his cabinet were women when they were only I think less than 30% of his MPs. "Cos it's 2015" he said. On more important matters, we really need to get this Dibling medical done today. Waiting til Tuesday is just asking to be punched in the face. all these headlines, 'thttehham are a great club, we only want players who want to play for us'. And then late Monday night, rumours are circulating that Spurs have made a late move for Dibling' Right. Ged Simpson 184 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:25:41 "Woke" and found I had been reclassified by a tubby, bald man with an "I luv me mam" tattoo on his forehead.I went to bed last night a wishy-washy-liberal. Reclassified, I popped to the shops. There were 25,000 guys who still live with their mums shouting outside a flat just above Aldi where a guy from Somalia lived. There, on his window, was a Blues sticker. I was worried but he wasn't when we chatted. "2-0" he reckoned. I saw his point. Ged Simpson 185 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:30:16 Mike G. Andrew Ellams 188 Posted 23/08/2025 at 17:48:08 Anybody wondering about 'woke' should Google the words of Kathy Burke. Ged Simpson 189 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:03:03 Very funny from Kathy. Andrew Clare 190 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:07:44 Right on, Kathy. Derek Knox 191 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:10:18 Hereward the Woke was an Anglo-Saxon nobleman and leader of the resistance against the Norman (not Whiteside) Conquest ,1070-71! Mike Gaynes 192 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:17:41 I have no idea who Kathy Burke is, but I looked up the quote because Andrew told me to, and I love it. Dave Abrahams 193 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:17:47 Peter (177), Kenwright was still running the club until he walked away and left the club rudderless when there was a very real danger we would be relegated. Moshiri bought the club but left it in the hands of a man who loved himself more than the club he insisted he cherished. Jake FitzGerald 194 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:20:50 That's not the definition of 'woke', Kevin. Andrew Ellams 195 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:26:36 She's an actress and comedian, Mike. James Marshall 196 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:42:46 If we're being woke, Andrew, I believe we should use the gender neutral. Kathy Burke is an actor. 😎 Jim Wilson 197 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:52:55 Well said Mike @ 178. Spot on mate. Kevin Molloy 198 Posted 23/08/2025 at 18:58:33 Jake,Yes, I suppose this word had different meanings for different people. For some people, it does just mean giving everyone a fair shake etc. Other people associate it with the current travails we are facing. Raymond Fox 199 Posted 23/08/2025 at 19:11:35 Common sense is not very common. That's all I have to say about woke. James Marshall 200 Posted 23/08/2025 at 21:05:06 Sean @187,I had the misfortune to have spent much of my youth living in the Woking area. As a bloke in a pub called The Old Stillage (affectionately known as The Old Stabbage) once said to me in the early '90s, "Wokin' is a one 'orse taahn and even the fuckin 'orse has left!"He was right. It's a shithole. Bob Parrington 201 Posted 24/08/2025 at 05:56:15 Jake and Peter, I awoke this morning or I awoke before dawn is far different from I, a woke, thinks this, that or the other. So you're safe guys. Smiles!!! Rob Hooton 202 Posted 24/08/2025 at 09:36:02 Lovely quote from Kathy Burke, hadn't read that before. People who use it as a slur tend to be bigots, one way or another.Anyhow, I hope we now get the Dibling deal over the line and look forward to seeing him in an Everton kit tearing defences apart! Peter Mitchell 203 Posted 24/08/2025 at 09:49:21 Dave @193,I am fully aware of all of that and I wasn't trying to defend Kenwright in any way. Sadly, though, it is an indisputable fact that the Moyes - Kenwright years (which is what the original poster was talking about) were more "successful" (reasonably regular European qualification, cup final, semi-finals etc) than the following more than a decade of just about escaping relegation under a succession of managers, mostly playing far more dire football (in my view) than we played under Moyes Mark1. Peter Mitchell 204 Posted 24/08/2025 at 09:59:13 Agree, Rob @203.Another similar term, which annoys me a lot, is "snowflake" which is squarely aimed at the younger generation, who (rightly and naturally) have a different world-view and different expectations than us oldies! Rob Hooton 205 Posted 24/08/2025 at 10:29:39 Indeed Peter, in the same way that we had different worldviews to our parents when we were young! Tommy Carter 207 Posted 24/08/2025 at 11:13:34 @ Gavin 111Kendall signed some utter dross that summer. And this was in the shadow of Andy Gray on the brink of being appointed and his well publicised shopping list that included Dwight Yorke. Don Hutchison was the only player that he signed that was premier league standard and it was probably the signing of Hutchison that saved us that season. Unsworth, Hinchcliffe, Speed and Stuart were all moved on and within a couple of weeks we had teenagers in the team. How we survived that season, it's a mystery. Kevin Naylor 210 Posted 24/08/2025 at 11:46:09 Losing today carries more significance than just being the first competitive game at BMD, it may set the tone for the rest of the season if we aren't careful. I can take getting beat if we have a go, but I can't abide performances like last Monday, where we just turn up and play for a draw and only start trying to score once we go behind. We've seen plenty of them under Moyes. Tony Abrahams 211 Posted 24/08/2025 at 11:53:19 Whilst you say fair enough to Peter, Dave, I just shake my head at that indisputable fact. The Moyes and Kenwright years were more successful than anything we have had since, even though the biggest thing that happened during that era was a distinct lowering of standards, matched only by a complete change in our overall ambition.I'm looking forward to going to our new stadium today, and pray that it's the start of a completely different era for Everton, hopefully one that is befitting of our distant past. Peter Mitchell 212 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:37:37 Dave@209 - no wish to prolong this, as it is always about opinions. In respect of the amount Moyes was paid, I am pretty sure that at least some of the managers we had subsequently were also paid absolute fortunes (Koeman and Ancelotti for example) and still managed to achieve less than Moyes did, playing, in my view, worse football for the most part. Does that mean I was satisfied with not winning anything under Moyes? No, far from it. And I was also pretty sceptical about getting him back. I was pleasantly surprised at the results last season and the (for the most part) much improved play compared with Dyche. I guess, the point I'm trying to make is that we (the fans) don't get to choose our owners or our managers, so we just need to get behind whoever is here and hope that something clicks (like Kendall). Peter Mitchell 213 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:42:22 Tony @211,I must take issue with you about Moyes lowering standards. Quite the opposite is true – we were in relegation scraps before he joined (Mike Walker and that ex-rangers scottish bloke who I can't remember the name of, now). Moyes set about successfully lowering the age of the squad, binning Gascoigne and Ginola, and getting us up the table, challenging for Europe and playing better football. Again, this is all there to be seen in the record books. Mike Allison 214 Posted 24/08/2025 at 12:50:38 Hi Kevin, thanks for your response. I guess we just disagree on the specifics of that word.I feel the word ‘woke' has been hijacked by the ‘right' to mean some of those negative things you mention, when it was coined by people who considered themselves woke to mean something positive. The specific policies you refer to are a much bigger debate that I don't think we'll bother with here, but I do believe there is merit in deliberately aiming to cultivate a diverse workforce. When choosing people on ‘merit', merit can be hard to judge, subjective and based on characteristics that favour certain groups over others. I'll stop there, otherwise I'm properly starting the debate that I said I wouldn't.And there are more relevant things happening today for this website! I'm ‘stuck' on holiday with no chance of watching it unfortunately, so will be a bit of a phone watcher for much of the afternoon. Paul Smith 215 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:45:25 Update from Paul Joyce- deal progressing well - up-front £35mill and 5 in add ons. Kevin Molloy 216 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:49:42 Eeesh, deal progressing?? I thought it was all done days ago and we were just sorting the medical… Stephen Davies 217 Posted 24/08/2025 at 21:55:53 Everton medical for Tyler Dibling will take place in the next 24 hours after deal agreed with Southampton.Fabrizio. Martin Berry 218 Posted 25/08/2025 at 14:10:12 What a signing this lad will be, he is a reincarnation of Waddle and Gascoigne.I predict that within 12 months other clubs will be wondering how they didnt take a punt on this lad.He will have the fans at HDS off their seats ! Exciting times ahead. Martin Berry 219 Posted 25/08/2025 at 14:19:00 What a signing this lad will be, he is a reincarnation of Waddle and Gascoigne.I predict that within 12 months other clubs will be wondering how they didnt take a punt on this lad.He will have the fans at HDS off their seats ! Michael Bennet 220 Posted 25/08/2025 at 17:15:00 He is doing an interview now in hill dicky wayaaa Liam Mogan 221 Posted 25/08/2025 at 17:21:22 The barcodes have bid £50M for Strand Larsen from Wolves. He's half-decent, no more, but it makes the Dibling fee look reasonable tbh. Neil Copeland 222 Posted 25/08/2025 at 17:32:32 Liam, I saw that too and thought the same. The fees are insane but it is what it is I suppose. To me Dibling looks a much better prospect than Strand Larsen who seems a bit gangly. Dave Abrahams 223 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:02:14 Peter (212) I thought that Koeman and Ancelotti came for the money and didnt last long, Moyes was also very content getting big money and lasted over eleven years without getting any honours and fluffing the big games year after year because he wasnt brave enough to try and win them. He then walked away when bigger money was offered, did he really think he was good enough to manage a club like United, after just three or four months there he was described as “ bobbins” I had to look that up it was an old Lancashire saying meaning dogshite, well that might have been a bit strong but when he went there he brought his own training staff and got rid of all Fergusons team that worked out well he never lasted a season—- the job was far too big for him but his ego thought he could do it— he couldnt along with some lesser teams but hes back here now and I hope he does well because I never want Everton to fail no matter who is the manager. John Williams 224 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:21:31 There were a number of United players who did not want Moyes, especially Ryan Giggs and his mates.Giggs reckoned he had been promised the job and the club owed him, especially Ferguson (but we will not go there). Those players made it difficult for Moyes, he was on a loser from the start. We all know these days what Giggs was really like. Dave Abrahams 226 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:33:10 John (224) Ryan Giggs and his mates didnt want him there? Never heard that before I think might be possible they were used to a great manager and his assistants then listened to Moyes and his crew and realised he wasnt much cop, definitely not what they were used to— a winner who went out to win every game along with the fans who thought they were getting a winner because Ferguson chose him but soon realised he wasnt and let him know it—- mind you he was a winner off the field because I believe had to pay him and his fantastic long contract off. Ryan Holroyd 227 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:40:09 Doesnt really say much about this Amorin bloke does itI think Moyes was abit unlucky at United. They were in the decline and still are now. David Gill left with Ferguson. They havent really recovered since. I doubt Moyes wanted Distin to pass to Suarez in that semi final. Dave Abrahams 229 Posted 25/08/2025 at 18:50:57 Ryan (227) Im sure they have won a couple of honours since Moyes left an FA cup and a real European honour.Moyes was a little bit unlucky at United — well if you say so!I know I didnt want him to play Mariane (?) Gueye for 62 minutes and come out for the second half with the intent of holding on to a 1-0 lead against a very poor Liverpool team, one weak shot in that half and Liverpool playing their third choice goalkeeper—— as a mate said to me at the end of that game “ We could have wrote the script for the match and how it would materialise wed seen it that often in Derby games. Danny O'Neill 230 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:15:31 I think the only unlucky thing I could give him, Ryan, was he was following English football's most successful manager in terms of trophies won, and living under his shadow...I don't think he was unlucky, I think he was out of his depth.Man Utd have never returned to winning league titles but, as Dave says, they've picked up a couple of trophies. In my opinion, their biggest decline was not winning the league again between 1967 until 1993 and getting relegated in-between. Jake FitzGerald 231 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:25:48 I was about 15 yards away from Distin when he gave the ball to the rat. Three of us bluenoses sitting amongst the rs. Still remember Sylvain shouting “Fuuuck”. Horrible. We were better than them up to then. Grant Rorrison 233 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:36:55 Yeah, Moyes is crap. How a bloke who has only ever got to the quarter-finals of the European cup. Won a third-rate European competition and averaged about 7th-8th place finishes in 11 years here previously is good enough for a club that have never got beyond the quarter-finals of the European cup. Won a third-rate European competition and averaged 8.15 place for the entire 20th century is beyond anyone's comprehension. He completely ruined the club last time around and he'll probably do it again. Ryan Holroyd 234 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:48:25 Each to their own Dave and Danny. Many people on the game think Gill leaving didn't help the situation but you two do. I think Man Utd haven't got past the quarterfinals of the Champions League since? I really can't be arsed to get onto an argument about it, however. Enjoy your evening. Dave Abrahams 235 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:53:19 Grant (240) So you like him, good for you, each to their own. Ian Pilkington 236 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:53:29 Mike@231More proof of your faith in our American owners. Brian Wilkinson 237 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:57:01 I would strike while the iron is hot and try and get Hojlund in on loan, then focus on a right back and jobs a good unDibbling , Harrison Armstrong and fingers crossed Barry will flourish together in the future. Mike Iddon 238 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:57:35 Grant #240, don't come on here with facts challenging pre-conceived views on people that will never change. Not worth going there mate, they will never like Moyes, whatever he does. Rob Jones 239 Posted 25/08/2025 at 19:57:58 Every manager after David Moyes, other than one season which was followed by regression, have done a worse job. But yeah, sure, he's terrible.ANYWAY. Great signing. Let's be happy, rather than have this endless, very boring debate. Dave Abrahams 242 Posted 25/08/2025 at 20:00:59 Ryan (244) Ill really enjoy my evening if Newcastle beat Liverpool, Id understand you not being arsed about getting into an argument if you hadnt written those two sentences at the start of your post. Peter Mitchell 243 Posted 25/08/2025 at 20:35:58 Dave@223 - not really bothered about what he did at Utd to be honest and there were plenty of Everton fans (not least on here) at that time very glad to see the back of him. That doesn't change the point I was making - he definitely improved us during his first time with us and is already doing so again, second time around. It is literally on the record for all to see. That doesn't mean he gets a free pass and we need to be winning stuff again - I hope we do it under Moyes, not for him, but for the club and fans.
