Season › 2024-25 › News Everton Women beaten by Tottenham in their Goodison Park curtain-raiser Anjishnu Roy 14/09/2025 31comments | Jump to last A historic afternoon for Everton Women, where they stepped on to the hallowed turf at Goodison Park for the first time as permanent occupants, was spoiled by Tottenham Hotspur. Brian Sorensen’s side suffered a 2-0 defeat in front of 6,473 supporters at the Grand Old Lady. The Blues arrived to this game riding on a high after beating Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield courtesy of an Ornella Vignola hat-trick. However, they looked flat here and goals from Olga Ahtinen and Cathinka Tandberg on either side of the half-time break decided the game in favour of the Lilywhites. The opening exchanges were cagey with the visitors leading the press. That pressure paid off close to the half-hour mark when Ahtinen nipped the ball away from Rion Ishikawa, played a one-two with Tandberg before slotting it home. The hosts’ situation went from bad to worse just four minutes into the second half when Tandberg caught Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan off her line and lobbed the ball from 40 yards out to stun the home crowd into silence. While the Blues’ second-half performance was better than the first 45, they failed to carve out meaningful openings and ended the game without a shot on target. Despite the promising start last weekend, Sorensen and his players have a lot to do. They also looked tepid in the opening 30 minutes against Liverpool and were outplayed by Spurs in every department here. The Blues will return to Goodison Park with a match scheduled against London City Lionesses on September 19. Disclaimer () Jeff Spiers 1 Posted 14/09/2025 at 18:58:43 Why are'nt they wearing white shorts? Jack Convery 2 Posted 14/09/2025 at 19:28:56 Jeff, check our female biology. Andy Meighan 3 Posted 14/09/2025 at 19:48:57 Jack @2. I think that's one of a number of reasons why I can't take women's football seriously. Frank Wolfe 4 Posted 15/09/2025 at 04:29:15 Thanks for the summary Anjishnu. Disappointing result but another great opportunity for Andy to tell us why he doesn't like Women's football. Ian Jones 5 Posted 15/09/2025 at 08:38:16 Also, am wondering whether the crowd attendance was lower than expected. Obviously better than the attendances at the previous stadium. Not sure if you can just rock up at Goodison Park so weather might have something to do with it. John Gall 6 Posted 15/09/2025 at 09:19:12 So Andy can't take women's football seriously because women menstruate? Textbook misogyny, worthy of the Taliban. I actually envy the women's team, and its supporters, because they can still enjoy being at Goodison Park, instead of the miserable, characterless bowl where the men's team now play. Ron Sear 7 Posted 15/09/2025 at 09:21:33 The thing that worried me about the Everton team was they lacked the physical hight and presence of the Spurs team. They were easily muscled off the ball although individually a number of them had good skills. At the starting line up the Everton team looked liked small girls compared to the height an size of the Spurs women. The other problem we had was the rain and cold - Winter is Coming. Peter Mitchell 8 Posted 15/09/2025 at 09:31:31 Well, good to see the usual well-informed comments on a thread about women's football. Just to add my two-pennyworth, I also can't believe Andy's comments - it is the 21st century and women make up half the population. Women's sport of all kinds deserves respect. There will be differences, but the women's game is definitely on the up, whereas I genuinely fear for the men's game at the moment due in no small measure to the corruption and greed of governing bodies and the global elite clubs. I really hope women's football manages to avoid that in future, as it inevitably grows.John - whilst I am very pleased Goodison has been spared the bulldozers, I can't agree with you about the BMD. It is already magnificent and the atmosphere will only improve as the fan base gets used to it. In respect of the result - very disappointing following the great win at Anfield, but there are a lot of new players to integrate. I am sure, under TFG the future for Everton Women is very bright. Andrew Grey 9 Posted 15/09/2025 at 10:15:47 But, were the doughnuts a lot cheaper as has been reported? Phil (Kelsall) Roberts 10 Posted 15/09/2025 at 10:45:03 Asked same question to son who went to the game.A: Don't know. By the time I got to the front of the queue they were sold out - exactly as they were at the Roma game.Need to have more doughnuts in stock.Peter - 21st century and women make up roughly 50% of the population. Wow, only now? Have they not always been around 50% of the population? Rob Halligan 11 Posted 15/09/2025 at 14:10:22 Apparently the doughnuts at Goodison yesterday were £2.50, compared to £6.50 at BMD. Mike Doyle 12 Posted 15/09/2025 at 14:23:16 Rob. Perhaps they were slightly stale leftovers from Saturday? Jack Convery 13 Posted 15/09/2025 at 17:01:19 6473 quite a good turn out. Remember a different company runs the Womens team now ! Though unsure if they own the catering rights too. Might explain difference in prices. Peter Gorman 14 Posted 15/09/2025 at 18:57:42 Sorensen out Peter Mitchell 15 Posted 15/09/2025 at 19:06:05 Phil - the two facts are not connected, they are both relevant to this debate in their own right. In a modern, western, capitalist society women are not just 50% of the population, they are increasingly seen as having equal disposable income. Indeed, women are now outperforming men in terms of qualifications and in terms of income amongst the younger generations. In this sense they are the future and TFG I am sure are well aware of this in terms in future revenue streams. Dale Self 16 Posted 15/09/2025 at 19:14:56 As Jonathan Tasker once said, "dodgy donuts!". Jeff Spiers 17 Posted 15/09/2025 at 19:37:12 Jack, I'll get me coat!! Kevin Molloy 18 Posted 15/09/2025 at 19:55:30 this donut discrepancy is clear evidence of unconscious bias. Were there any other sugary confections sold at both stadia? A similar case brought Birmingham Council to its knees. Rob Hooton 19 Posted 15/09/2025 at 19:58:51 Spurs were by far the better team in this one, Everton were outplayed and outfought. Matt Traynor 20 Posted 16/09/2025 at 06:29:11 Apparently one of the lounges were doing a bottomless brunch for £70. Might be worth a pop at a future game! Also I believe the attendance was around 6 X the average at WHP. The CEO stated that they are going to be operating the stadium at a loss for the foreseeable. Can't remember if it was her that said it, but someone at the club said it was down to them to make it their home for the next 133 years.I am assuming financing the ladies team is part of the overall PSR calculation? Eric Myles 21 Posted 16/09/2025 at 06:36:34 Jack & Andy, some ladies teams do wear white shorts. Eric Myles 22 Posted 16/09/2025 at 06:37:59 Matt #20, as it's owned by a separate company now, does it even impact our PSR? Alan J Thompson 23 Posted 16/09/2025 at 07:20:37 Makes me wonder when we might see 50/50 teams, comprising both men and women or does 11 a side forbid it, which is already part of Athletics and Swimming relay teams or even a Ma(ra)donna of the ball in the men's game, is there a rule forbidding it or is that a too sensitive issue which seems to be haunting Athletics and Tennis. Brendan McLaughlin 24 Posted 16/09/2025 at 07:23:17 Matt #20Women's football is excluded from PSR calculations. Ian Jones 25 Posted 16/09/2025 at 07:39:18 Alan, think there's some sort of rule which prohibits men and women playing in the same team. This ruling extends down the leagues to much lower levels. At school/junior levels, I believe it's then at the discretion of the individual organisers of the leagues. In the future, I can imagine there'll be exhibition games or a tournament with mixed teams. There has been the mixed 4 x 400m relay race at this year's World Athletic Championship. Mike Gaynes 26 Posted 16/09/2025 at 07:56:34 All I can tell you is that where I referee, the co-ed leagues have three times as many teams as the mens-only and womens-only put together. This game is loved. Alan J Thompson 27 Posted 16/09/2025 at 08:55:18 Geez, Mike, you might have opened Pandora's Box there. James MacGlashan 28 Posted 16/09/2025 at 16:14:40 Spurs were by far the better team. We had no Plan B when passing across the back then back inside didn't work. Though we did improve after going 2-0 behind but needed to involve the midfield more. Can't stand the passing out from the back nonsense when it clearly doesn't work. I had a brief mental block regarding the shorts for which I feel terrible because I have read about this regarding football and other sports (eg tennis). In a moment I was focused on the EFC kit being white shorts. Paul Kossoff 29 Posted 17/09/2025 at 00:00:35 I've seen some poor defending in my time, but that Japanese player really should have extra coaching in, when it's okay to fuck about in possession and when to whack it up field. Was it the same player who made the diddling mistake twice? I'm sure if the women's game hadn't been on the day after the men's game, the attendance would have been near 10,000. If the attendance stays that low, then I can't see Goodison lasting very long. James MacGlashan 30 Posted 18/09/2025 at 02:44:15 Agreed, Paul. If we want Goodison to stay, then more fans need to go.
