Hitzlsperger's chances improve

Marouane Fellaini's knee injury could prompt David Moyes to make a swift decision on the future of Thomas Hitzlsperger.

Hitzlsperger, a former Germany international midfielder, has been on trial at Finch Farm for the past month having been released by Bundesliga side Wolfsburg during the summer. As a free agent, Everton are permitted to sign the 30-year-old outside the transfer window.

Moyes has previously suggested that he would know more about Hitzlsperger's fitness following the current international break. And Fellaini's injury will now come into Moyes's consideration when debating whether to keep Hitzlsperger.

With Darron Gibson, sidelined since September 1 with a thigh problem, also struggling to be available for the derby, Moyes is short of cover in central midfield.

Ross Barkley, whose initial one-month loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday expires this week, is also an option.

Sign him up if the wages money is OK (which I expect it will be as we'd hopefully know the expectations prior to having him in on trial). Need more squad depth and an experienced jerry international who is only 29/30, is proven in the prem and has a good attitude would seem nailed on helpful to us. Get him on board. Hope he is fit and firing ASAP.

I can already picture a thirty yarder against the Shite. We need numbers and he was never a bad player. Could be worth a punt.

If he can get up to speed again, then should be a decent recruit albeit short term.

Just hope he can get back to PL standard and do a job again. Maybe by Xmas and for the hectic schedule round there could be a useful squad member.

Does anyone know why he was released by Wolfsburg?

Brian he only played 6 out of 34 possible league games for Wolfsburg last season, their current first team squad of 35 players has 14 midfielders listed in it together with another 4 listed as on loan. (Although Diego is listed as a first team member, he has been out at Athletico Madrid for a season and scored their third goal in the Europa final.) They have an abundance of midfielders and the coach doesn't even rate Diego.

Wish all the best for him, especially if he does sign but it's hard to get too excited about an injury prone journeyman who didn't quite make it at West Ham. I'm much keener to see news on Gibson and how he's doing with his injury. Anyone heard anything?

Sam, there are plenty at Old Trafford who see Gibson as an injury prone journeyman.

Considering some of the midfield players United have had over the past couple of decades and the fact they play Champions League every year and generally make the quarters, yes Gibson would be surplus for those requirements.

It doesnt mean he isn't a good Prem midfielder and a good, important player for us.

The more salient point is his injury record, which is worrying. Hopefully his body can get used to consistent club football, get stronger and overcome it. Either way we need 2 deep lying mids in, one short term and a long term one in the window.

Felix Magarth released Hitzlsperger from his contract at his request for time off to heal persistent knee problems he had not been free of since joining Wolfsberg. If this condition was pre-existing to his joining Wolfsberg, signup would be a waste of time for EFC and an even greater risk to Hitzlsperger, who should then retire, IMHO.
