Distin admits disappointment after cup exit

'It was a game we could and should have won'
Sylvain Distin admits that he feels last night's Capital One Cup tie against Fulham "was a game we could and should have won" after Everton dominated the first half.

The Blues lost the tie in the second half as Fulham roared back and though they rallied late on and probably should have forced extra time when Seamus Coleman was presented with a gilt-edged chance, Roberto Martinez's side crashed out.

It was a familiar tale in a competition that has provided nothing but misery for the club over the past 50-odd years — the Blues have progressed beyond the fourth round just once in the last 24 years — but Distin feels that their destiny was in Everton's hands. The veteran defender blamed a failure to take chances up front and a lack of concentration at the back for the winning goal for the defeat that sent the Blues out.

"We played really well in the first half and had the game in our hands," the Frenchman said. "Realistically we should have been 2-0 up by half-time. We created a lot of chances but could only get the one goal.

"We felt comfortable but in the second half they changed their system a bit, started to press higher and we didn't adapt. It was a completely different game after we conceded their first goal.

"The second goal was just about communication but we needed a little more focus as it was an easy set-piece. It was an easy pass and we didn't switch on. It wasn't good enough."

"It's difficult to think of any positives at the moment. We're just feeling disappointment right now. I feel like it was a game we could and should have won."
