Everton 2 - 0 Liverpool

Tonight's hated local visitors to Goodison Park were sent packing after Calvert-Lewin followed up Branthwaite's scrambled opener with an absolute classic far-post header.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been passed fit after scans revealed no damage from the knee injury he sustained during Sunday's win over Nottingham Forest. Beto will not feature as a result of concussion protocols after he was knocked unconscious in that game.

Seamus Coleman is out injured along with Nathan Patterson. Godfrey and Graner start with Young on the bench along with Onana, Danjuma and Gomes.

Everton kicked off, Pickford launching it long, McNeil getting the ball back but Liverpool quickly got control of the ball and tried to play in Diaz with a deep crossfield pass that Pickford collected.

A great cross in by Harrison was just glanced away from Calvert-Lewin, McNeil's sht wa blocked to Doucoure who screwed his shot wide. Immediately the ball flew into the Everton goal area and had to be cleared. A very lively start.

Everton's first free-kick was lobbed wastefully forward but there was a great turnover forced by a Tarkowski tackle and a tremendous ball in from Harrison as Calvert-Lwein was brought down by Alisson for a penalty but both Doucocure and Calvert-Lewin were clearly offside. No penalty.

Liverpool got behind Everton far too easily and Saleh crossed in rather than shooting, where Godfrey incredibly pushed the ball beyond the post from point-blank range, with two red shites all over him.

A Gana shimmy drew a free-kick in a dangerous spot, left of the Liverpool area, McNeil's far-post delivery headed over by Godfrey when he really should have got it on target. But the Blue shirts had started well and were competing hard all over the pitch.

Godfrey crossed a good ball to Calvert-Lewin but there was no-one following up on his decent layoff. Harrison was blocked for another potentially promising free-kick on the right, swung in to Tarkowski on the far post, to Calvert-Lewin with a prodigious lead at the near post, his reader beaten away by Alisson.

Calvert-Lewin was next to be fouled, seemingly all foul contact from the Reds being called Everton's way. But this one was headed harmlessly by Tarkowski to Alisson.  A Liverpool forward ball almost caught to Pickford, then Godfrey made a tremendous tackle before Tarkowski gave away a corner policing Nunez.

Liverpool won another corner but Everton broke away, albeit too slowly to force a counter-attack. Branthwaite benefited when Nunez slipped. Everton won another call when Konate clearly pushed Calvert-Lewin in the back. But the deep crossfield ball balloned to high.

But Everton kept getting the soft free-kick calls, Branthwaite heading this one across goal and in the chaotic follow-up he forced it under Alisson and spinning in off the post, with Calvert-Lewin following up. It was clearly second phase and the goal withstood the VAR offside check.

How would Everton now play with the lead? Would they keep up the tremendous effort of the first half-hour? Liverpool, of course, had other ideas as the seriousness of their situation sunk in, and Everton somewhat retreated into their defensive shell.

McNeil went down after feeling an arm in his but that one was not called and Liverpool redoubled their attack but could not get past Branthwaite.  But Mac Allister adroitly fed Nunez who would surely score... but Pickford forced his shot away after it was blasted straight at him.

Another Liverpool foul and Virgil van Dijk's name went in Madely's book. But the Reds finally got their own soft call for a nothing foul by Tarkowski. Mykolenko twisted his ankle badly after he was barged by Nunez and was in serious pain, needing treatment but he miraculously recovered and was back on.

But Liverpool had effectively controlled the play since the goal and another incredible chance fell to Diaz at close range and again Pickford was in the way for another fantastic save.  Saleh then miskicked his huge chance, then blasted over when the ball was blocked back to him.

Harrison tried to break out but was double-teamed. When Everton did finally get the ball forward, Doucoure was flagged offside and Liverpool were mounting another attack. Some tremendous blocks and saves were required and a corner cleared to just about keep the lead intact as 6 minutes of added time were played out and the Blues went in with the score 1-0.

As feared, Ashley Young replaced Vatalii Mykolenko for the second half. Liverpool's first attack saw Gana clear behind for a corner, Pickford saving Van Dijk's header. Branthwaite then had to put it behind, Mac Allister's shot well blocked. Next to defend was Godfrey, but Everton looked to break although it rather went to Calvert-Lewin's head when he tried to lob Alisson from 60 yards.

In the next attack, the ball came to Roberstson but he was offside and fumbled his shot anyway. Everton were getting a fantastic run of the ball that saw Ducoure progress and Harrison eventually set up Gana for another goal but he fluffed this shot and rolled softly to Alisson.

Everton got the ball forward again and this time McNeil in space fired a tremendous shot at Alisson, that he pushed over the bar. McNeil then delivered an absolute peach to the far post where Calvert-Lewin leapt like a salmon and powered in his best-ever header completely flooring Alisson, a fantastic goal!

Liverpool were stunned, and seemed unsure quite how to respond to the fantastic atmosphere that now filled Goodison Park. But they did get forward and won yet another corner, Van Dijk's downward header picked up by Pickford.

After 3 Red subs, the ball spun off Calvert-Lewin to McNeil via Harrison but he took 1 second too long and his shot was blocked. Everton forced a series of corners, Tarkowski trying to nod one forward to Branthwaite but he was offside.

Some more fantastic defending snuffed out Mo Saleh but Calvert-Lewin was needed to defend corners and unavailable for the quick bread. Liverpool kept trying to build their attacks but the ball almost miraculously kept coming to a Blue shirt, although Diaz did smash a shot against the post and out. Liverpool players were lining up, but the ball again ended up with Pickford.

It was lovely to see Liverpool players messing up simple moves, Robertson stumbling the ball behind at a crucial moment. They kept at it but the Blue shirts kept getting the ball, as Onana replaced Gana.

Doucoure and Mac Allister got in a silly tangle, the Everton man a bit lucky to escape censure. Another attack briefly saw Saleh's boot but again he skied it. Everton responded, Doucoure crossing to the far post but it was too difficult for Harrison to convert.

Into the final 10 minutes and Liverpool were still struggling to really threaten the Everton goal, with the Blues defenders seemingly doing everything right to keep them at bay.  The Reds buzzed around, until Elliot lofted it forward… straight into Pickford's hands.

Garner was caught by Endo right on the edge of the Liverpool penalty area as the clock ticked closer, Young dreadfully wasting a late opportunity to further punish the Reds. From a Liverpool corner, Elliot tested Pickford with a clever dipping shot as 5 minutes were added.

Everton tried to play up in added time, but were now finding it harder to keep the ball.  Another normally scoring chance falling to Salaeh was palmed away by another excellent Pickford save to underline the wondrousness of this exceptional victory over the hated enemy!!!

On the plus side, I guess we no longer have the likes of Ashley Williams and Tom Davies taking up spots in the team. Just other useless players.

I understand the idea of Garner for Gomes. Will make us a bit tighter.

But we created very little against Forest. Without Gomes and against a much better side, it's hard to see us leaving our half.

Fingers crossed.

Such a tremendous expenditure of effort in the first 30 minutes to get that goal... but nothing since, and serious danger of trying to defend the lead.

Maybe they can... but it's a very dangerous gameplan.

Ernie Baywood
13 Posted 24/04/2024 at 21:03:15
I think it counts as 'having a go' Michael. Any plan is dangerous given the gap in ability.

I was surprised Liverpool started so open and direct rather than just trying to take the sting out of the occasion. Then they pretty much lost control every time we pressed or lobbed a set piece into the box. Continuing to give away silly free kicks was suicide.

Since then we've understandably slowed down and therefore dropped deeper and Liverpool are controlling the game a bit more. We've needed Pickford and he's stood up.

I can't see Myko coming back out which will give us a defensive problem. Hopefully we try something other than Young.

2-0. Brilliant display. Few million more added to Branthwaite's fee. They cannot handle Calvert-Lewin. Harrison and Garner look great together.

Not a sound from their "supporters". Bingo gums smiling. Did I hear someone say 'quadruple"? Then it became, trio, then it became double…

And then it became Nichts, Herr Klopp, Sie zähnefletschendes Stück Scheiße. Kriechen Sie aus dem Scheißkopf der alten Dame; Auf Wiedersehen, du Gummiknüppel

Who'ed 'av thought it, certainly not me pre-game, I have to say.

Wow, what a result, although I had a sneaky feeling about this one. Honestly!

Terrific effort and performance from every single player who came on the pitch, even Chermiti when he came on for about a minute at the end. They battled and battled all game long.

And all credit to Dyche for picking the players up after the Chelsea drubbing. Surely, we are safe this season now.

When Trent flicked the ball out for a corner and all the Liverpool players were staring at each other, I knew they felt helplessly rumbled.

And yes DCL was unplayable. Pickford also had possibly his best ever game. Godfrey was Carlo's Godfrey again! Everything was fantastic.

Again, congratulations to Dyche for the setup for all those free kicks, and the players for the clever ways of winning all those free kicks in the first half which scared them to death.

We can't underestimate the power of Goodison Park. The performance from the players was great, but the performance of the Goodison crowd was inspiring, it made them rush their passes, hesitate for headers and clearances, fluff their chances and lose their usual flow.

I've been to loads of derbies at Goodison and the tourist attraction, watching on the telly, my hairs on my neck were standing up all game.

I don't know if it's because we've had nothing to celebrate or get excited about for a while but it felt like like the crowd wanted it, more than usual, more than other years.

My lads just watched us beat them for the first time at Goodison with that atmosphere, skipping to bed singing Spirit of the Blues...

Not Moshiri, not 777 Partners, not Richard Masters, no independent commission can take that from us!!!!!

A month ago, I was convinced we were doomed. I hated everything about the club from the board down to the manager, players and even some of our more optimistic fans.

But this is what Everton does to you. It's a well-worn cliche but it really is the agony and the ecstasy with Everton. I apologise for my negativity but tonight I just want to enjoy the warm glow of a fantastic win and a good single malt.

What a complete classless response from Van Dijk – he's certainly picked up the LFC ethos. I liked Rooney's comment concerning VVD's 12:30 kick-off complaints:- “He should be wanting to get back on the pitch in the morning to put things right”.

I never, ever use the word 'hate' because I think it's too strong a word, particularly in a football sense. That said, I hate everything about those Red Shite bastards. Ahem, sorry about that.

That was as good as we can be. Every player did their job tonight, deserved the win, had the best chances, outfought, outthought and outplayed Klopp.

This has to be Dyche's best night – no matter what the next season in the Premier League does. Plaudits all, not a thing to complain about, not a player who shirked. This is our Everton.

It wasn't until that second goal went in that I felt that something special that has been missing all season. I also felt anxiety because of who I support, but it is worth every moment.

Our boys worked their butts off and the result reflects that. Great win but there is still work to do. Great day!

It's been some day, with portents at every turn.

Today is 18 years since the death of Brian Labone, and 39 years since the greatest Goodison night, vs Bayern Munich.

I woke up to a message from my nephew, James Corbett, that Rob Sawyer of this parish had unearthed a 30-year-old article written by my Dad about the appointment of Joe Royle (first game a 2-0 derby victory at Goodison).

I opened my emails, there was one from David France telling me not to worry, all would be well, he was going to be at Goodison in his lucky suit.

A chat with my Grandad, Dad and brother Charlie, all in the graveyard at SS Peter and Paul's, Crosby. The first derby since Charlie passed away last October, it was very poignant to watch his grandson Louis come out as one of the mascots with James Tarkowski.

We even had a living spirit, Wayne Rooney in the commentary box, giving those of us in the Main Stand a huge beam and thumbs up, the first goal was not going to be disallowed.

All-in-all, a powerful alchemy. But it would have counted for nothing without the spirit of the 13 players who represented us, and a bouncing Goodison.

The Spirit of the Blues.

There was no Man of the Match tonight. It was a totally excellent team performance from Pickford through defence, midfield and up to Calvert-Lewin. Team fantastic, crowd even better.

Great result, resilient disciplined performance that brought about the greatest feeling in a long time, and that crowd of awesome vocal blue boys was amazing, it was booming out my TV as if I were there.

I'm gonna enjoy this for a good while to come. Well deserved and gratefully accepted! Thank you, Everton, thank you crowd, you've re-ignited the pride and lit a beacon from within the depths of despair.

I never thought for one minute we could win that game.

Every single one of our players to a man were outstanding.

Yes, we rode our luck at times but we did create chances of our own so the result was fair.

We couldn't have scripted it better, denting their title hopes and virtually securing safety.

Just got in and seen Bingo's post-match reaction.

Not once did he give us any credit the tooth monstered bastard couldn't even get Jarrad's name right, calling him 'Brathwaite' – the ignorant teutonic cunt.

Apologies for the foul language but that remark really got to me, as well as calling us a set-piece team that's all they rely on, bitter bastard.

Sorry but some of our football was outstanding tonight and, er, yours wasn't, you German fucker.

39 years to the night of Bayern Munich – I was there that night, but the atmosphere in there tonight matched it –absolutely fantastic.

Still can't believe we have finally beat them at the Old Lady.

Goodnight to all, and apologies for my pessimism.

Fantastic display!

I am still trying to peel myself off the ceiling, but the Artex is gripping in deep.

Where did that come from? Every man in a blue shirt tonight fought for the badge as if they believed in it.

Technically they are far superior, but you have to win the physical battle to assert this. We won these battles time and time again. No quarter given. Despite their players having hefty price tags, they didn't compete.

Liverpool have been wobbling recently and we capitalised on their deficiencies in a relentless way.

Jarrad and Tarkowski in defence were magnificent. Gana in midfield was a livewire, charging into their players and snapping away as if he had three or four feet at times.

Calvert-Lewin was imperious in the air. They had no answer to our robust and physical presence.

This is not normal for a derby as often they battle away like rats in a sack, but tonight they gave up the ghost long before the final whistle. They knew they were beat, you could see it in their eyes.

I wasn't comfortable until about 3 or 4 minutes into injury time, due to, well you know how it is...

Great win, should see us safe and them completely deflated for their prospects this season.

A perfect derby.

Just got home from Goodison, via the railway in Kirkby. I'm staying up and having a few more wines.

The most bizarre thing about the game tonight was the referee's performance. Every time in the first half a Red Shite player fouled one of us, the ref gave us a free kick!
It was absolutely nuts!!!

Missed the first half, caught most of the second, back to celebrate at the end and listen to the crowd signing loud enough to be heard across the Atlantic.

Sent a message to my RS friend over here saying “Klopp had a good run!” She didn't appreciate it, said “I'm not ready to talk about this.” Well, I'm ready to watch the replay tonight with a glass of bourbon.

Now I see reflected in the US media what so many of you have bemoaned in the UK media.

I clicked on ESPN Soccer to see the coverage of our glorious victory, and the headline reads "With Klopp drained of energy, Liverpool players lacked motivation in Everton loss".

Click into the story and the headline changes to "As Liverpool lose steam, Klopp farewell trophy all but gone".

And the story itself is four solid paragraphs of Klopp before our performance is even mentioned.

Looks like US footy writers have the same disease as the UK ones.

A week last Monday, we were heading home up the M6 from the drubbing at Chelsea and I really couldn't see where the next point or goal was coming from... but what a difference a week makes!

They really turned it on tonight and everyone put a shift in, for an all-round brilliant performance. Even the referee had a decent game, penalising the sly shoves and digs the RS usually get away with.

Just off to bed. I hope I don't wake up in the morning and find it was all a dream!!

I have not posted for a while because, in all of my 56 years of supporting Everton, I have never felt so despondent and felt we were doomed — especially after the 6-0 drubbing at Chelsea.

Having said that, I cannot believe how well Everton played tonight. While I am a big fan of Calvert-Lewin and Pickford, I have to say everyone scored a 10 from me tonight.

Harrison, who has come in for a lot of stick recently, was immense. I thought the tactics and the defending were incredible and, while the shite had a couple of efforts at the end of the first half, I felt we were comfortable and they never looked like scoring.

While I am not a fan of the style of football Dyche advocates, it certainly does support the players we have. We don't have the quality to play like Man City. So overall, given how we have been performing and the gulf between the teams, it is truly amazing we ran out comfortable winners.

Some of our better squads over the years have not performed so well, so take a bow, Sean Dyche and team, for a wonderful night and for lifting my gloom. COYB

I've just finished watching Optus's poor coverage of several seconds of action followed by a similar amount of freeze frame – although the sound and commentary keep going – and nor have I read any of the above report or comments.

It is difficult to give a cold, logical assessment of a game that carries so much more emotion and toward the end I thought that we had been the far superior side but then recalled that Pickford had made at least half-a-dozen good, important saves – but then, which saves aren't?

I was worried that the penalty was denied because a couple of players seemed too lazy to get back onside but then Godfrey saved a certain goal.

Then on the first goal, the VAR took far too long to make a decision that didn't look that difficult. If the offside law is that difficult, then make it easier, was the player in an offside position (defender inline or between attacker and goal) when the ball was played by the last onside player.

Calvert-Lewin's finish, even though he was unchallenged, was that of a centre-forward, although at times some of his movement was a worry, and in others he deserved somebody up there with him.

The Gana sub worried me as I didn't think he was the player who should have come off but MotM couldn't be any other than Branthwaite. I'd rather we didn't part ways with him owing to financial considerations but if we do then it has to be for a minimum of £50M plus a couple of players of our choice.

A win or draw with both Luton and Sheffield Utd should be more than enough to guarantee another Premier League season and I suppose it would be difficult not to keep Dyche for another season.

Awesome night and awesome result. Truly deserved the victory. We should now aim to approach all games with this intensity and close the season on a high.

We are capable of beating any opposition if we get a grip. This should be looked at as a turning point and I feel we should aim to get 10 points from last 4 games and it is very well possible.

Derek Knox
131 Posted 25/04/2024 at 06:41:44
I am, I suppose, one of the senior citizens of TW, and in 60 years of watching and supporting Everton, and being on wrong end of derby results all too often.

We have had very few nights or days at Goodison Park where the atmosphere was electric, and the performance and result followed suit. I believe last night was one of those, hitherto all-too-rare occasions.

The vitriol and disdain we have had from the Red Shite and their supporters over the years was somewhat exorcised by this result. To also cement a rise from the pit of relegation, and to derail their narrowing Title hopes were also icing on a long-standing mouldy cake.

I really hope we all get behind Sean Dyche to the full for the rest of the season and beyond. I know 'one swallow doesn't make it a summer' but I believe there is a decent manager in there considering the things he has had to endure since being in charge.

Many have asked for his dismissal which I think after last night's display, was not only premature but totally knee-jerk in retrospect. I was getting a bit disillusioned with poor performance after poor performance, picking the (almost) same players and repeating, not stringing passes together, too late substitutions etc.

I am not saying that result last night was a one-off but it may just be a significant building block for what is to come.

There were virtually no passengers last night although Doucoure did less than most, even Harrison showed glimpses that he may be decent after all. Gana, Branthwaite, Tarkowski, Pickering, Calvert-Lewin all stood out especially. Godfrey was great at right-back, a position he has seemed ill at ease coping with, and saved a certain goal threat from them.

No, I can't criticise last night's display in any way, shape or form, and with it being against 'them', it made it all the sweeter. Maybe the tide has turned, but still too early too get the deck chairs out!

Statement from Yourgone Klopp:

Two goals given against us despite being for the other team - a foul throw not given and our players booked for kicking Everton players despite clearly wearing our badge - which we simply cannot accept.

We warned the PGMOL that the VAR isn't a Liverpool fan before the game but they didn't change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. (Well, that time at Spurs, obvs)

Shithouse FC will now consider its options.

Ernie Baywood
133 Posted 25/04/2024 at 07:22:26
I think if that's to be a building block then it won't be because it keeps the same people at the club, it will be to serve as a reminder that this club and even many within this group of players are capable of great performances and special moments.

There's been far too much selling and acceptance of the sub-mediocre when 'good' was never out of reach. We know what this club really is and what it should be.

We've spent months watching the same old ultra-conservative dirge. And I include the last two home wins before this game in that, though it's much easier to live with dirge when it gets results.

Suddenly, we were braver in the way approached the game. We did get players forward to support our striker. We did break with numbers. We did try things.

I didn't even mind Calvert-Lewin's effort from his own half – be instinctive and try things when the moment comes. Goodison will always get behind that.

We've been too happy not to lay a glove on teams. Tonight, we beat that lot into submission.

I do wonder whether Liverpool suffered the 'Their Cup Final' moment that we've had so often in these games. They were desperate for the win while I think the pressure came off us a bit after the Forest result and the lack of expectation around the game for most Blues.

While we looked confident within our system, they basically played our game and completely lost their heads, committing silly fouls and then defending the resulting set pieces terribly. You won't see defending anywhere this week as bad as there's for the Calvert-Lewin goal. How does no-one go anywhere near a big Number 9?

Credit to everyone involved on the blue side. I'll even give Dyche a nod for picking them up after that Chelsea defeat. It takes some man-management to turn out that performance. That doesn't change my view that we should employ someone with appropriate standards for this club.

Paul F, thanks for those insights (you brave man - crossing enemy lines) it goes to exemplify though how they think of us, and they actually believe they have a God-given right, just to turn up, and should beat anyone.

I've given Dyche a lot of stick on here. I apologise. Last night changed things. The team was immense, so chuffed.

Watching Klippety and The Dyke being interviewed had me smiling. Klopp: "We knew where the corner cross would go to"– what an arrogant sod. Virgil squirming, love it.

Well done to the team and well done Sean Dyche.

Still ecstatic after last night's performance, but looking back at the after-match on Sky, all we got was Carragher and Sturridge doom and gloom analysing the Red Shite season – nothing about the great Everton win.

Then, we have the dickhead Van Dijk whinging and crying, couldn't even mention our name, he said “We should have beaten a team fighting relegation." And Klopp apologising to their supporters… nothing gracious in defeat, or acknowledging their neighbours.

Why am I not surprised by our bitter Red Shites who will go down in history for the wrong reasons, something they believe never happened??

What a great night that turned out to be. Hard to pick a MotM but personally I would give it jointly to all of them for effort.

The stand-out names have been mentioned multiple times and I haven't read the entire thread but a shout from me for Mykolenko who was having a great game for me until that horrendous-looking ankle turn.

Quite how he managed to see out the half defies logic having suffered an injury like that myself. It's no wonder the Ukrainian lads are giving the Russians such a tough time.

Enjoying the moment this morning and it's nice to see so much neutral support for Everton on the BBC Have Your Say column – which is up to about 2,500 comments so far after last night.

You post some very good stuff on this website Ernie, but when you talk about pressure, you rarely put yourself in the shoes of the Everton squad, who have been playing with massive pressure all season since that first 10-point deduction.

I came out of the Forest game delighted because you could feel the pressure lifting towards the end of the game and I instinctively knew that Goodison was going to be a much more positive place because of this.

Great atmosphere for a low-possession Everton (not hindered by the ref who was very fair throughout!), with Dyche's plan (!) of a goal each half seeing red mist descend on and off the pitch.

Oh joy unbridled, as we said to each other last night. Young and Harrison, you both surprised me. Well done. And Godfrey hung on in there, too.

Only just watched the game. We rode our luck a bit but on balance deserved the win.

MotM? Take your pick from Pickford, Branthwaite, Calvert-Lewin or Gueye. I'd go for Gueye who was everywhere!

Honourable mentions also for Mykolenko for having Salah in his pocket then coming back on after that ankle injury, Young and Godfrey for stepping up when needed, Tarkowski for being narky all game and (legally) blocking Van Dijk for Dom's goal, and finally McNeil for that corner and providing an out-ball.

Sod it, they all played well, a great team performance and barring a very strange set of results we are safe.

A fantastic night to be a blue. Thank God, after last night I am certain there is one, we turned things around over the past couple of weeks after suffering so much since Christmas.

Pickford was immense, best shot stopper in the Premier League, Brantwaite is the best central defender out there. We must do everything to keep him! Calvert-Lewin, hopefully, last night's performance will see him kick on for the rest of the season and beyond.

We defended well, rode our luck and took our chances. We can do no more than that.

I am not sure who was the greater sulker after the final whistle, their captain or their mouthpiece on Sky?

That's 41 points on the board with 4 games to go. Yet another clean sheet chalked up.

There are more points to be had, let's go out and get them and bring some real momentum into the 2024-25 season.

Dyche Out!

A special night, my voice is wrecked and great to see everyone still in their seats well after the final whistle, apart from one sad section in the corner… 😁 I suppose they had to get back to the airport for the last flight to Norway.

Hard to single out players as everyone put in a shift but the back 4 and Pickford were immense, even our old mate Ashley Young. When he came on at half-time everyone nearby said, "Oh shit, Young v Salah..." but he wasn't really tested.

It was strange; if I was Klopp, I'd be saying "Give it to Salah every time," but they barely passed it to him, preferring Diaz on the left (who was their only decent performer). Salah look liked he couldn't be arsed, he was dreaming of a big Saudi payoff at the end of the season.

Long live Dychie's minging training top!

Funny how feelings about the manager, the club and certain players change after beating Liverpool. All for the best reasons.

Oh, what a beautiful mornin',
Oh, what a beautiful day.
I got a beautiful feelin',
Everything's goin' my way.

Suspecting the worst, I couldn't bring myself to watch it last night so was out at the theatre. What a treat was in store when I came out of a very long play!

Just watched it back and we were fantastic. Committed, organised, cohesive, dangerous at set-pieces and on the break. Everything that we might expect from a successfully functioning Sean Dyche side.

And I think credit has to go to the manager and the players for turning around the results and performances after the horror show at Chelsea. 41 points from 34 games in a season marred by points deduction and absent ownership is a very solid return with a squad that has been stripped of its best talents.

After some on here decried certain relegation (for the third season in a row) after Chelsea, the bookies now have us at 50/1. I can't see both Luton getting 9 points and Forest 8 points from their remaining 4 games and, even if that miracle occurred, with confidence returned, we would surely fancy a few more points at home to Brentford or Sheffield United.

To dent the RS title effort is the sweetest of cherries but the main thing is that we are all but safe and thoughts can turn to next season.

A happy Thursday to you all. Enjoy it.

What a result! Can't believe we hadn't won against them at home since 2010.

Great performance, great result – which pretty much guarantees we stay up. Something monumental would need to happen for Luton to make up 8 points on just 4 games.

We've still got Brentford and Sheffield Utd at home to play so I expect to get some points here. Brentford don't have much to play for as it is.

Well done, Dyche and team.

Ernie @133, I agree with everything you said.

I must admit I went to the game expecting the worst given our awful track record against them at Goodison Park. But as you say, from Minute 1, the players showed that they weren't there just to make up the numbers, and were there to let them know we were up for the fight, which hasn't always been the case. When we did attack, we attacked in numbers which we haven't done a lot this season.

There were good performances from every player and Dyche's maxim of "minimum requirement is maximum effort" was definitely the rallying cry last night.

I think there were 3 outstanding performances last night and all 3 deserve the MotM award. Pickford made 3 outstanding saves, Jarrad Branthwaite is, in my opinion, the best English centre-back, his positional sense for such a young player is unbelievable. Finally Gana Gueye was simply immense ,he broke up attacks made quite a few interceptions and showed a calmness on the ball that was an inspiration to his team mates.

Also I didn't give Calvert-Lewin a MotM award but that was the best I have seen him for a long time, he bullied Liverpool's centre-back pairing, they just couldn't handle him.

I have been critical of Sean Dyche but last night he got the tactics spot-on – something he hasn't done often enough, and last night showed, against one of the best sides in the Premier League, this team are capable of a lot more than they have showed this season.

Finally, like many I was a little worried when Mykolenko went off and was replaced by Young, but fair play to Young, he played well.

I'm still in a bit of shock after last night I think. Intensity did for the RS, they really didn't know what hit em. Joy of joys seeing Virgil van Dork and Gnashers Klopp looking so confused and upset.

A huge result – and now 3 wins in 4 (matched only by City, Arsenal and Palace). So we're coming into a run of form at a good time.

I thought the effort and contributions spoke very loud about the team spirit in the squad. It would have been easy to throw in the towel after Chelsea – but they haven't.

I suppose the question will be: Why haven't we been able to deliver results like this consistently? For me, that is answered by the fact we have a small squad of limited ability, plus the generally demoralising circumstances of a double points deduction and the failed or stalled takeover. There's nothing really more to see in that respect.

Otherwise, it was a very Joe Royle style performance and approach to the match – total commitment, no undue respect, and bullying them at set pieces. And indeed Dyche shares a lot of similarities with Royle as a manager. Let's hope Thelwell can find a Kanchelskis this summer to add a bit of real quality and pace to the attack.

Maybe that was a lucky sign as it certainly brought back many happy memories of that night. Well, I never thought for one minute we were going to have another special evening under the lights. Superb performance from the boys with more special memories for all Evertonians.

So which is the better management achievement of the season…?

Having a multi billion talent-laden squad, options in all positions, being set up to win everything, but only landing the caravan cup…

Or having a threadbare squad, 8 points deducted in stages, affecting morale and confidence, no visible ownership or leadership of the club, yet surviving comfortably in the Premier League...?

Take your pick.

Great night last night, would have been fitting of the last Goodison Park derby, let's hope we repeat it next season.

My favourite reaction from last night was from Virgil van Dijk.

He was getting increasingly frustrated that he couldn't get where he wanted to be on the field as an Everton player was on the patch of grass he wanted to be. The frustration of 'get out of my way' when the player was more than allowed to be there.

It was a great team effort and thoroughly deserved win!

John Raftery

Some great posts in this thread for the ages. That was one of the last great, memorable, pulsating nights at Goodison.

It is often said 2-0 is a dangerous lead but there was a strange feeling around the ground in the last 10 minutes that we had won the game while Liverpool had run out of ideas. Their fans clearly thought so as the majority headed for the exits. That always sends a positive message to the opposition!

I have been fortunate to attend 128 derbies in all competitions. The only win I have missed was the one at Anfield during Covid. Including that 2-0 win, we have enjoyed 22 derby triumphs in the last 56 years. All the wins were achieved through a high intensity approach based on solid defensive work. In those 22 wins, we kept 19 clean sheets which are generally the key to success even for our most talented teams.

Back to this season: clean sheets have been the key to our improvement under Dyche. We have now kept the opposition blank in 11 matches which have delivered 29 points. Some fans decry the notion of prioritising defensive solidity but for a team which never looks comfortable when dominating possession, it really is vital to be compact in shape with every player working their socks off to deny opponents space to work in. Unless or until we are able to recruit more talented attackers, it is the only approach which will deliver the results we need to stay in this league.

I have read on this site laughable comments such as "Dyche is a dinosaur." I contend he is far from that. He is quite simply a manager who makes the best of what he has available. There will be hiccups along the way, and the Chelsea defeat was one hell of a hiccup, but I believe Dyche is the manager best equipped to take this club forward over the next few years. Sacking him in the summer would be absolute lunacy. I just hope new owners, if indeed we have them, are not lunatics.

We're all but safe. We might know if our safety is guaranteed on Saturday but most likely after the Luton game. That's when the mathematic possibilities should be removed.

John #179,

Great post mate, you made me count up my derbies and you beat me by 18, which kind of surprised me as we are pretty much of the same age. But it is a good few years since I made the quest to Mordor.

My first was 1962 a 2-2 draw, I seem to remember that they equalised with the last kick. Well over 70,000 inside Goodison. My first at our old ground was a 4-0 win for us, Mogsey celebrating wildly after scoring against his old team!!!

I didn't actually see us lose a derby until the 1966 Charity Shield. That season was the last time we did the double over them I think.

You are spot on about Dyche, I don't like him nor his style of football but his pragmatism is precisely what we need at this moment in time but I have a feeling that it may well get worse before it gets better. So your lunacy comment is absolutely accurate.

What was our expectation at the start of this season? "Stay up" – I think was most fans take on the situation. Richarlison had been sold, Gordon, Gray and Iwobi followed later.

Dyche has been dogged on here by some for his style of play which I think has been overstated. A manager has to play to his players' best chance of success, sure he could set up and try to play like Man City or Arsenal but that would make sure we were relegated in my opinion.

We should be on 41 points and comfortably safe now with every chance of more to follow. To endure what he has had to this season and still be positive and upbeat takes some doing.

Talk of sacking him at the end of the season is crazy as we are likely to be in worse shape next season squad wise than this season.

I don't know about giving him the sack… he is more a candidate for manager of the season!

For a number of times, the players and manager have been called out.

The players have battled then seen points taken away, they fought again and saw further points taken away

We have seen Richarlison and Gordon taken away.

Years of the fans' discontent with the boardroom and owner.

We've seen players injured and players having to slot into their place, we have seen some awful nervous performances, but never has a football club been punished as much as Everton, not just boardroom level, but also from the powers of the corrupt Premier League.

We questioned if the players cared, we questioned the manager; last night both the players and manager showed they cared.

We have to be patient and get the ownership sorted out, be patient that we may have to bring loan players in, forced to yet again sell players, but we will still be Everton Football Club and in time we will get out of the mess we are in.

Last night showed that it is us against the world and we are winning.

Do not let the powers of the Premier League divide our fan base, we are all in this together, united as one we will rise again, but it will not happen overnight, but we will get there.

Up the Toffees!

Thanks, Derek (182) and Stephen (187),

Last night's game definitely went a long way to making up for the disappointments. We have suffered too many humiliating defeats in recent years. Bill Shankly once said in an interview after he had retired that a derby victory can be a catalyst for a change of fortune for the winning club.

An example was our 3-1 win in 1966 in Alan Ball's first derby. We had been outclassed a fortnight earlier in the Charity Shield but the win and Bally's two goals signalled a new era when we generally had the upper hand.

Of course the pendulum shifted in the other direction in November 1970 when we lost 3-2 after leading 2-0. I think that was the most disappointing derby of the lot.

Let's hope last night marked another shift of the pendulum.

Absolutely made my day, that. I wet myself as I'm on the bus on my way home from work going past the old lady.

To cap it off, some little girl as we passed Goodison started singing "Everton, Everton, Everton."

Absolutely fantastic! I still can't believe we beat them.

The atmosphere there last night was the best there's been for many a long year.

Unbelievable outpourings of emotion on this site just show that you can't escape the blue love. I'll admit to shedding a few tears in the aftermath, especially when you saw the little kids in the crowd singing all the Everton songs and the Everton players at one with all the staff.

Tarkowski's tackle, Calvert-Lewin's rag-dolling them and the referee not being a red puppet are highlights, as was Rooney owning Carragher and just sitting with a fantastic, smug smirk.

The after-match interviews from them sums them up and is why everyone but Liverpool supporters hate them. They're already turning on Salah and Klopp after all they've done for them.

I've heard them repeatedly say that Everton are the thing that just won't flush; they will just always be, ‘the stain that never fades'.

It's taken me this long to get myself together enough to post, after one of the most memorable and iconic evenings I've ever had the privilege of attending at our beautiful old ground.

I don't know where to begin really…

Every single person of a blue persuasion who was there last night was responsible for that victory. The players responded to the fans and vice versa, and that perfect storm of togetherness carried us to a much-needed and thoroughly deserved victory.

The thing that struck me most was the faces on the kids in the crowd. I sit in the Family Enclosure so, as you can imagine, young toffees are absolutely everywhere and without exception, each and every one of them (no matter their age) had never seen us beat them.

They had never seen us win a derby.

Not a trophy – a derby.

Never.

Well now they have. 💙

Walking along Walton Lane on the way home with my 2 nephews (aged 11 and 16), I felt grateful that they both had now seen us win a derby at Goodison before we move home.

Honourable mentions for the much maligned Messrs Harrison, Godfrey, Pickford, Gueye, Calvert-Lewin & Dyche.

Going to bed now. I'm exhausted, still.

Onward Evertonians 💙

Great feeling to wake up after that performance and result against the shite.

Now let's win the next 3 games and just enjoy the end of the season.

I had mentioned before that I missed the first half due to work yesterday. I've since watched that half and then re-watched highlights.

Upon reflection, can we just pick up Ben Godfrey and parade that kid on a palanquin around Liverpool this week?

That goal line clearance he made was immense. If we go down 0-1 and he doesn't make that spectacular defensive play, do the shite get their tails up after our penalty was called off after offside? Are we again in a sea of misery failing to win yet another derby?

Ben Godfrey was immense yesterday. He was fantastic when we signed him and just wasn't the same after he got Covid. He's been darn good this season and I think we're seeing a return to the player we originally signed.

Great, great play, great, great game, and absolutely vital was Ben in securing a win.

Watching on a stream can be frustrating, bad commentators etc but what I do like is at the end of the match they just keep the cameras rolling following the players and showing the fans for a good 5 mins instead if 10 mins of shite adverts.

Jamie#201. The first time I watched Ben, I said there was a touch of Des Walker about him, which is very high praise.

He has lost his way over the past couple of years. His injuries and illness will undoubtedly have contributed significantly to that. There is a very good player in there.

Whether it was his own decision, or he was under orders, it was fascinating watching him last night. He played very narrow, giving Diaz a lot of space. The rs fed the ball to Diaz constantly, he’s a tricky player who caused us a few problems but, overall, Godfrey came out well from the battle.

JC 201,

Agree Godfrey was immense. I have rated the lad since he first arrived, it was such a pity he had a poor patch – hopefully back to his best and stays with the Toffees.

Jay #199, brilliant post.

Jamie #201, I'll add my agreement to Pete's -- in fact I planned on posting something similar, having watched the game again this morning on the club site.

Godfrey has struggled not only with his health but his identity -- he's a scorchingly fast player with a fierce appetite for a tackle, but he cannot pass the ball or track an overlapping winger, and therefore isn't a modern fullback. He has a natural positional affinity for the center of the box, but he cannot win any aerial challenge, and therefore will struggle as a center back. 20 years ago he might have been the perfect "marking back" playing in front of a sweeper and cleaning up tackles, but that defensive alignment has gone out of style, and he cannot play the modern 6 because of his inability to safely dispose of the ball.

What he does have is the poise and ability to make the spectacular, saving tackle. He has done it several times this season. Yesterday's was barely noticed by many at the moment it happened, but I agree with you that it was unquestionably the play of the game.

David #166, that's an absolute beauty.

As with everyone I am over the moon that we have finally beaten them at home. However it took Dyce three games before he finally played Branthwaite, 'took his chance' Dyce would say. Incorrect his took his chance when Ancelotti played him.

Why has it taken Dyce 8 months to find the right blend of fast fit players and pressing strategy that he stumbled across a few months ago. He then lost it seeking not to lose games. Tonight we went back to pressing teams and not letting them pick their passes uncontested.

Calvert-Lewin played a blinder tonight but I am very concerned that we are about to do another "Rooney" type blunder by selling Branthwaite. He started the first goal and finished by putting the ball into the net. He inspires the rest of the defence and should be with us for the next 10 years.

Currently every position in the league is worth £2.1M in prize money and the next three games with Branthwaite's influence could bring us another £8M+.

Next season Beto, Dobbin, Paterson and Garner all young players will have more experience and will all gel better as a team.

We will have lower salaries with 8 players coming to the end of their contracts instead give Branthwaite a salary rise to 90k p/w.

The 8 players Deli Alli (£100k+ p/w thanks to Frank), Coleman, Young, Gueye, Gomes, Danjuma, Harrison and Lonergan.

We could also sell Holgate, Maupay, Keane and Onana.

I would take the 6/7 points hit for next season because Spurs, Chelsea and others will be drawn into the net and watch the criteria change

Next season with Branthwaite and most of the others we will be challenging for Europe and in our first season at the new stadium, we will be challenging for Champions League positions.

Without Branthwaite, we will be in this position next season and maybe lower.

Frank, I think you echo all of our feelings there regarding Branthwaite, what a find, what a bargain, makes a very pleasant change for Everton's scouting system. It's normally the other way round with us, we pay over the odds for 'potential' still waiting for them to flourish when they hang up their boots. Or pay an exorbitant fee and it's a damp squib, going for peanuts two years down the line.

I just hope his head isn't turned with 'offers' from the so called big boys. I really do believe we have the nucleus of a very good, but not great side, and a manager who has proved he is right for the job in hand. Great managers in the past have been so close to the sack (Alex Ferguson for one) only to turn it round and create history.

If, somehow we can grab a few more bargains in the summer, prune the expensive players out of contract and a drain on wages, have a good pre-season, this season will be chalked down as a bad experience – but one we survived !

It will take a miracle to keep Branthwaite in the summer.

Thank you, Moshiri & Kewright.

Colin, I think we will try to sell Onana and keep Jarrad.
Ian Jones
210 Posted 26/04/2024 at 07:42:41
The thing with Jarrad is that, given his ability, he'll probably want to play at a higher level and want to win things, which means the inevitable may happen unless we suddenly become world beaters.

Unlike Seamus, Leon, Leighton or Phil (thought I'd just use Christian names 😀), he'll be off to pastures new.

Ignoring the potential need to sell our assets for financial reasons, and assuming he will go at some stage, it would be great to get at least one more season out of him.

Playing weekly as opposed to possibly occasionally at a club like Man City or Arsenal should be good for a younger player.

We should enjoy him while we have him.

Also, a sidenote about Dele. I would be happy if we could offer him a mutually agreeable contract for say a year and just see if there is a player still there. I also feel that if he had been at Goodison on Wed night he would have enjoyed the scenes - assuming he wasn't there.

A couple of media outlets are saying that Man Utd are willing to take Jarrad off our hands for a knock down fee. On the basis that we're so strapped for cash we'd be grateful for anything.

One "source" even suggested millions had been knocked off his estimated value following the fiasco at Stamford Bridge.
Please God if we must part ways with this young man then we hold out for £80M+.

This report on the game epitomises the media love in with the RS. It suggests not so much that we won the game but that they lost it. Through tiredness. Even the Nunez vs Tarkowski comment doesn't stack up as James has played an extra 649 minutes, more than 7 games.

Sean Dyche’s tracksuit energy shocks weary Liverpool into submission — The Guardian.

With the use of larger squads I wondered if the rest of the tiredness argument stacked up. Looking at the starting 11 we'd played 29,783 minutes while they'd played 30,035 (including Europe) so all of an extra 22 minutes per man. The excuses are absurd. Well beaten.

There's just one thing that irks me and I find hard to let go of.

My post will be number 213 in a thread about our first derby win at Goodison since 2010.

Recent "negative" threads have attracted far more posts.

I really can't get my head around those who just want to moan and go missing when there's no opportunity to do so.

Weird, really weird.

Brian @214,

Furious ire is a far stronger emotion than satisfied contemplation; hence the increased numbers when ranting is the order of the day.

People get confused by the idea forums are for civilised debate when they are mostly venting spaces for the unhinged.
