Nathan Patterson has been ruied out for the remainder of the season and is now a significant doubt for Scotland's Euro 2024 squad after suffering a serious hamstring injury in Monday's dreadful defeat to Chelsea.

The full-back was making a rare appearance off the bench as a second-half substitute at Stamford Bridge as Sean Dyche made changes to a side that was on its way to Everton's biggest defeat for almost 20 years but he pulled up feeling his thigh after the hosts scored their sixth goal.

Sean Dyche confirmed the unfortunate diagnosis in his press conference at Finch Farm today, saying that Patterson will require surgery on the injury which would mean the Scot faces a pontentially unwinnable race against time to be fit for his country's involvement in Germany this summer.

There was better news for Jarrad Branthwaite, however, who is expected to shrug off a knock that forced his withdrawal from the match as a precaution and Dyche hopes to have Idrissa Gueye and Dominic Calvert-Lewin back for Sunday's huge game against rivals to beat the drop, Nottingham Forest.

Both Gueye and Calvert-Lewin missed the drubbing by Chelsea with a tight calf and hamstring respectively, with the Senegal international also being absent for the home win over Burnley the weekend before following the birth of his child.

Bad luck, Nathan, lad. Rotten news. Get fit again and come back stronger.

Nathan hasn’t reall got his career going since he came down from Rangers with injuries and then lack of game time, I think he has the ability to play in the premier league just Ben unlucky although Dyche doesn’t really seem to fancy the lad, I doubt he’s ever played six consecutive games for the Blues since he came here.

See you in Europe’s competition Nathan then hopefully for Everton next season.

Weirdly didn’t the RS sign a young Scottish full back at the same time we signed Nathan and he’s also had terrible luck with injuries?

You have to feel sorry for Patterson. A rotten season for him and now his Euro adventure, cancelled too. I know he gets paid but playing, is what it's all about and for him, this must be a real sickener, the circumstances in which Dyche turned to him must have had Patterson thinking to himself WTF. You don't play me. I'm 4th possibly 5th choice at right back and you want me to go on when we're being mullered. Someone else might have told his slap happy boss, to "Do one". We may well have seen the last of him in a blue shirt. I hope not as I think there is a player in there. He just needs coaching on his defensive side of the game.

Unbelievable bad luck, and his chance for Scotland.

Hope he's fit for Scotland, the Euro's could be his big break. Dyche not a fan, but when I look at his few performances, his concentration, and his positioning are very suspect, but he should have been given a chance on the right wing in front of Coleman, his attacking threat and pace would have been worth trying, in a position where Harrison and Young have been poor.

Such a shame that he will miss the opportunity to play in the Euros and to benefit from that experience.

On the positive side for him, he should be fit and raring to go next season and hopefully will develop and recover his confidence and form under our new manager.

I wonder just what is the real truth behind the incident in Portugal ?

This poor kid. Honestly, he deserves a break.

Patterson should be consistently playing RB with Coleman also playing. He should be learning from Seamus and splitting playing time with him.

But this club, in its infinite wisdom, signed Ashley Young, who is now stopping this young raw but talented player, from developing.

And now the poor kid tears his hammy.

Come back next season Nathan! Some of us think you'll come good. And I, for one, think he's been screwed with playing time from a 38 year old playing in front of him. Excellent forward thinking, Everton. [sarcasm]

Fitness has been an issue since his arrival. Nathan has never convinced as a full back. Wing back might have been a better position for him but we have never had the players to make that formation work.

I know in my experience when playing competitive football week in week out you are fitter and more robust than when playing for fun or just training games, my opinion is that Dyche got it very wrong with Patterson and should of given him a run of games no matter what, how can you get experience whilst sat on the bench ?
The poor lad hasn’t had much of a look in and with that incident in Portugal don’t be surprised if he wants away come the end of the season , he deserves better treatment and a coach who believes in him

When you're down on your luck, and my God we are down on ours, everything just piles on. It needs some strange twist of fate to turn it around and surely ours is coming soon. Let it be this weekend.

Probably pissed off at being overlooked week in week out, brought on with the game lost on Monday and overdone it trying to prove a point to Dyche. Well done Sean, another great piece of management.

A great shame but Patterson does seem to be quite fragile to injuries for one so young.

It's got to be said he's not been helped by some piss-poor management of him on Dyche's part, I don't know why he brought him on at 4-0 down on Monday night yet gladly overlooks him in far more suitable occasions.

It means we will be scraping round now with either Godfrey or the old boys reunited, Coleman and Young.

Nathan needs rest, recovery and treatment, and I endorse Christy's comment (#6) as regards his not being given any sort of chance out on the right wing, or even as a wing back?

I don't think he will be fit enough to play for Scotland, which might be a blessing in itself, as he could make his injury even worse if he returns before he is fully match-fit. My expectation is that he will go to Germany for the experience, but as a spectator.

Should Sean Dyche continue as manager next season, I feel that he's should be entirely honest with the player as to whether or not he is in his thinking for first pick as right-back.

If not, then unfortunately Nathan should be loaned out -or sold- as his development as a Premier League player is being hampered by a lack of game time. I think we are still to see the best of him but I'm unsure we ever will.

What a shame. I don't think he has had either luck on his side, or been used to his full potential by team selections. Shame too he has missed out on Scotland where he has always played well.

Speedy recovery wished from me and come back stronger!

I saw him close up in 2 away games vs Sheffield Utd and West Ham and he was terrific in both.

Should have played in way more games and he would have made the right-back spot his own.

I hope Nathan gets better luck going forward.

He deserves a break in the rotten luck he has had with injuries in his time at Everton so far.

"Should Sean Dyche still be manager next season?"

Then not only is Patterson's future blighted, so too, the rest of us.

Hopefully, Niall, you are merely being polite and respectful.

That's him done then.

Another £15'M done in, next stop on loan somewhere else. Not wanting to be 4th choice back up to Coleman, Young, & Godfrey.

Not sure he's the answer, but my god, the madness of persevering with Ashley Young is beyond me.

Wasted on the bench for months behind the likes of Young and Godfrey, then gets thrown on in the midst of a complete drubbing and suffers a season-ending injury (likely ruining his chance at the Euros to boot).

Wonderful squad management, Dyche. Chef's kiss. No notes.

I'll bet a virtual pint that Dyche mentions Patterson's injury in the pre- and post-match briefings as some kind of mitigation.

The post about Dyche being our manager next season made me bring up sick into my mouth.

God forbid he is allowed to stay, please no!

Niall McIlhone

Neil (#20) yes- regarding Dyche, I hope he is retained, but there is talk about his being sacked at season end if and when 777 Partners take over? Clean sweep, and all that? Who knows? I don't like the thought right now, but equally, I feel continuity is very badly needed.

Personally, I feel that Dyche is, in whatever scenario, faced with a huge challenge with so many players out of contract of having to be sold due to PSR, and that he and Kevin Thelwell will have a monumental job on their hands rebuilding a team to compete.

With regard to Patterson, my hope is that he is fit enough to participate in all of. The pre-season training, and also that he is given his chance as first pick, much as I am a fan of Seamus.

Dyche is a dinosaur, I don't think he'd be anything else with a team better than ours.

If he plays Young again on Sunday, I'm done with him.

Sean Kelly
27 Posted 19/04/2024 at 20:35:29
Dyche is a gobshite. He doesn't play him all season, slaps him around the head to further humiliate him and then brings him on at 4-0 down so that he can share in the drubbing.

Have a bit of respect, Dyche, and fuck off.

Ernie Baywood

Well Mike, he's going to play Young or Harrison unless he changes formation.

Do you see him changing formation?

Mike Hayes

Ernie - he can't, he's a dinosaur, one-trick pony etc etc

It would be his downfall in the end if we go down.

Good luck to him. He did well for us earlier in the season, a few mistakes aside, and has definite potential.

Great news for Dyche as he can continue playing Young or Godfrey. Or both… I wouldn't put it past him.

Unlucky injury for the lad especially with the euros this summer, ironic thing is he gave the ball away then had to sprint back to recover for their 6th goal, if only he passed the ball to a blue shirt.

He hasn't deserved more game time this season. Whenever he has played he has usually broken down with an injury and let others take the shirt.

For his own development, he needs a loan or a move away next season.

Ernie Baywood
32 Posted 19/04/2024 at 21:05:04
Rob, I think you could say the same for everyone at the club. For their own development (and sanity), they need a move away. We're so toxic you would wonder how we'll retain or sign anyone.

It's hard to see how we actually come back from all this, regardless of what happens with our Premier League status. I'm resigned to that outcome being what it will be – there are no signs that we'll actually try to make something happen for ourselves. We'll just end up where we end up.

A new manager will be a key step in 'changing the story' and it's important it happens as soon as possible.

Rob Dolby
33 Posted 19/04/2024 at 21:11:13
Ernie, When the takeover happens, Dyche will be first out of the door.

Until then, we are stuck with him as there isn't any other leadership at the club to make decisions.

I can't defend his brand of football but he has been dealt the worst hand in our history.

Keeping us up would be the greatest achievement since Joe Royle won the FA Cup.

Niall.

I admire your courage in adding your second post. I have to be respectful in considering your comments as should others on this site.

However, if Dyche is still manager at the start of next season, I wonder just how many of us will be bothering to log on.

Supporting Marine AFC (other non league clubs are available, in my case Tiverton Town) will be far more palatable.

Rob Jones

I'm endlessly fascinated by the dichotomy so prevalent on this site, that Dyche is a shit manager, a dinosaur [insert your own insult], and the fact that ours is a terrible squad full of shit players.

On a weekly basis, I find myself reading about "League One at best" Calvert-Lewin, "Wish Niasse" Beto, "Grandad" Young, "one-legged" Harrison & McNeil, "accident waiting to happen" Keane, "overrated" Onana, etc., etc...

The insults go on.

Someone please square the circle for me.

Sean Dyche, on merit, has done the best job, with the worst set of players, since Ancelotti, the Great Ancelotti, managed... *checks notes*... a 10h-place finish. And yet the man is maligned and insulted in various interesting ways by people who would never say any of this to his face.

Sean Dyche is not going to be our manager long term. But forgive me for feeling as though I've watched this movie before. We were too good for Allardyce too. When we finished... *checks notes*… 8th. We'd probably have maintained the midtable mediocrity. But my God does midtable mediocrity sound fucking nice after the past 3 years.

Every week the same people write the same insults about both players and management, then express their befuddlement at the fact that our results aren't very good at the moment.

I rate Patterson though I'm not oblivious to the fact that he is a diamond in need of a polish.

He's had some poor games for us and some frankly outstanding ones. I also think his delivery from the right, when on song, is an understated goal threat.

What is undeniable is that he'll never develop on the bench.

Rob Jones – is it worth pointing out that the football stank for Allardyce and stinks as much from Dyche?

I'd rather check the result on Teletext than actually watch them.

Rob Jones
37 Posted 19/04/2024 at 21:45:01
Peter, I agree that the football stinks. But every time we've tried to play expansive football over the past few years, we've been ripped apart. Under several different managers.

I don't give a shit about crappy football. I just want us to win. I'll take three fucking miserable wins, against Forest, Sheffield United, and Brentford.

When the time comes (and I've no doubt it will), I want Steve Cooper. Plays youth, turned a very poor Nottingham Forest (in the Championship) into a decent team, and would be willing to with a director of football, a model which we're seemingly determined to persist with.

Hopefully our next Gaffer will value this lad and his coaching staff will improve him as a right-back too.
Ernie Baywood
39 Posted 19/04/2024 at 22:49:17
Rob, I don't think it's a dichotomy.

My opinion is that the players aren't great.

But we're not getting out of them what we should expect.

This squad was assembled for decent mid-table money. And they're capable of much more than Dyche's approach allows.

Again it's repeated that Dyche has done a good job. Whether through watching games or just viewing results, I don't know how anyone could come to that conclusion.

Aaron Lancaster
40 Posted 20/04/2024 at 01:15:14
We'd be comfortably 14th if Dyche didn't have 8 points taken off him, which had nothing to do with him. I reckon his strategy and tactics have to get more Dyche-like when we hover just above the relegation zone.

He has made many mistakes, sticking with Ashley Young may lead to the end of his Everton career, but I wish he was able to manage with all the points this team has earned on the pitch.

I don't think we'd see super expansive football under him but it would tilt in that direction if we weren't psychologically blocked like we are now. At any rate, starting with Gomes as a 10, Harrison as a right-winger, and benching Onana may be the best selection he can make right now.

Nick Armitage
41 Posted 20/04/2024 at 09:11:53
He's not available enough and not good enough when he is. Like his current manager, he's Championship standard.

Another Thelwell mistake.

Winston Williamson
42 Posted 20/04/2024 at 09:52:35
Nick, I thought Patterson was a Rafa and Brands signing? Might be wrong..

He reminds me of a young Coleman. Moyes’ approach worked there. Played him further forward to get an understanding of positioning and approach play. Slowly reverted to full back.

Patterson should have had the same approach, especially with the lack of any actual right wingers in the squad.

If you want to place blame on the DoF, you should ask, why do we have three left wingers and no natural right winger?

John Raftery
43 Posted 20/04/2024 at 14:39:39
Rob (35) Correct.

Nick (41) Patterson arrived before Thelwell was appointed.

John Raftery
44 Posted 20/04/2024 at 14:57:25
Ernie (39) I am not sure we have assembled a mid-table group of players. At best it feels like 14th is our natural berth over a full season.

To me the squad is a mishmash of free transfers such as Tarkowski and Young, players signed from relegated clubs such as McNeil and Pickford, loanees such as Harrison and Danjuma, over thirties whose best days are behind them such as Coleman, Gomes, Gana and Doucouré and lads who have failed to develop such as Godfrey and Onana. The list is not exhaustive while some of those named belong in more than one category.

Apart from Branthwaite, Mykolenko and arguably Garner and DCL I doubt any of squad will be of interest to mid-table clubs other than perhaps as out of contract makeweights. We certainly have nobody who would frighten opponents.

Nick Armitage
45 Posted 21/04/2024 at 17:23:36
I stand corrected on who signed him, but he's distinctly second rate. I suppose he'll fit in well with the current squad of dross we have.
Andy Crooks
46 Posted 21/04/2024 at 23:24:59
Nick, you don't know enough about him to make those comments. I know people who have watched him play for Scotland who think he is special.

Anyway, never mind the football shite, does anyone else think he looks incredibly Scottish, like Broons Annual Scottish?

That's a major plus in my view. Alex Young had the same look!!

Stuart Graham
47 Posted 22/04/2024 at 00:51:17
The thing I think he misses is a run in the team with someone inside him talking him through the game.

I'll never forget being at Loftus Road when Seamus was starting to bed in at right back. I was really sceptical of Jagielka, but that entire game Jags was constantly in Seamus's ear, talking to him, coaching him, and that's what Patterson needs...
