Euro Disaster Again
On our last Euro campaign it was a bad referreeing decision with Big Dunc's perfectly good goal being disallowed which was the turning point. How ironic that another bad decision ruling out the first penalty will probably be our downfall again.Stefan Wessels: Did pretty well and cannot be faulted for the goal. Looks a bargain for a free transfer. 7
Tony Hibbert: Not too bad a performance. Covered well when Everton were attacking in the first half. Still suffering from poor distribution. 6
Joseph Yobo: Had a fairly easy night because Metalist didn't have much attacking wise. Did pretty well. 6
Joleon Lescott: Everton's Man of the Match, which frankly isn't saying much. Great goal and looked solid at the back. 7
Leighton Baines: Did particulary well in the first half with several attacking charges. Looks a good purchase but struggled in the second half. 6
Phil Neville: Attempted to get forward whenever possible but never managed to control the midfield in the way we would have hoped. 6
Lee Carsley: Very average game. Will probably be more important in the away leg. 6 Leon Osman: Looked to be on form in the first half but but disappeared in the second. If only Arteta had been fit. 6
James McFadden: Deserved his start but as usual his form was up and down. A few good shots from outside the box, a few bad decisions giving the ball away. 6
Aiyegbeni Yakubu: Did Moyes seriously pay £11 million for this guy? Rubbish, lost the ball too often, couple of limp shots from outside the box. £11 million!!! Thats crazy. 5 Andy Johnson: I have to admit I thought he would miss that first penalty, when he put it away I was pleasantly surprised. Except of course the ref made him take it again and there was no chance that Andy "I've forgotten how to score" Johnson was going to find the net twice in a game. Bad second penalty. Sure he worked reasonably hard but never even looked like scoring. When we got another penalty I was already writing this report and hardly looked up because I knew Johnson was going to miss. Piss-poor, Andy. Missing two penalties on such an important night, I don't want to see him in an Everton shirt for awhile. 4
David Moyes: Sent out an attacking side and can claim poor refereeing and piss poor penalties cost us but the fact is its another Euro disaster and even I wont argue if people say he deserves the sack. 6

How many of you, watching AJ’s body language, thought he would miss the first penalty? I did, and it was a hopeful blast which a goalie could well have saved. I knew he was going to miss the second. I would have been amazed if he’d scored the third.

I hope you were giving Hibbert and Neville 6 out of a 100. I’d say 3 at VERY best.
Reasonable assessment Dutch... think you are wrong about Hibbert and Neville though... any player that continuously and aimlessly punts the ball upfield without being put under any pressure is a liability ... these are two seriously limited players and the reality is that possession is 9/10’ths of the law in {even UEFA cup} football ... this was all too easy for their big guys at the back ...

Fucking embarrassing, schoolboy football, no width, everyone just chasing the ball. McFadden, Osman and Hibbert just kept giving the ball away. Phil Neville, we all know he is not a midfielder, why doesn’t Moyes.

The referee did make mistakes, but ultimately, he awarded Everton two penalties and sent off two Kharkiv players. Is it his fault that Moyes/Neville/Johnson are too thick to say that no player should take a penalty twice?
I’m afraid people trying to blame the refereeing for the result are kidding themselves. Apart from the first Anichebe penalty that he didn’t give, the ref got most of the decisions right.

The football we played tonight was utter crap and the tactics were even worse. No shape and clueless. Hibberto and Neville could not pass water! Yak is a lazy bugger who won’t jump or run. McFadden on the right............utter bollocks!

Metalist played better football with 11, 10 and then 9 men than we did with 11! I have never been to a European game where the atmosphere was so flat and its down to the players on the park to ignite that. Ok, we had more possession and missed two pens but we are not a very good side are we? It breaks my heart to say it.
A team that plays with that untried formation and has a midfield of Neville, Carsley and Osman is not goin anywhere. The lack of quality in the side was shocking. Hibbert and Osman are 1st division players and have no place in our team. Neville isnt a bad right back but Mcfadden can catch the 1st bus back to Scotland, who gives a fuck if hes got a new agent.
Tactically I thought we were a joke and the buck stops with the manager, i wont even start on the Yak!

Dutch, fair points brought up, but I wouldn’t call it an attacking lineup with Neville and Carsley in midfield. Not much creative attacking prowess from those two. Also having Johnson & Yakubu on the pitch nowadays can also be classed as not having an attacking lineup.

tony hibbert was a disgrace lost the ball to often i think he tought everton were playing in yellow at times big vic did well when he came on ! just not good enough gonna be hard to cget a result there
Jolean Lescott, Man of the Match? I hope that is a joke. He stopped the ball dead on several occasions (particularly in the first half) when an opposition player was no less than 30 yards away, and hoof it up the field to Yakubu who could do very little with it.

Hibbert didnt play to bad i hear?, what match were you watching???, he is terrible, he is not comfortable on the ball, he cant pass the ball unless its a simple pass, his positioning is terrible. Moyes initial attacking tactics looked encouraging (I assume Arteta was actually injured?!?) but as usual it looked like ’headless chickens’ time and despite hard graft from everyone, it was clear that we lacked class and flair in midfield, and eventually resorted to aimless punts (I don’t call them crosses!) into the box. Baines looked good going forward but left some big gaps in defence in the first half (thankfully not taken by the opposition). Yakubu looked sluggish (as I stated when we bought him) and what was AJ doing so deep in the second half! Faddy laboured with only the odd glimpse of his Scottish talent, Neville just looks so ordinary (as does Hibbo, but no change there) and Carsley just filled a space in the centre for no apparent reason. Sure, the re-taken penalty was unfortunate (the ref ridiculously sticking to the rule book, but he did warn the players beforehand!). AJ’s first penalty was a hope for the best blast, so I feared the keeper would read his style and clear lack of confidence and sadly it proved true. They scored a good equaliser - we just looked like we got stretched on the right again (shades of Villareal!) but then the final penalty (I though Vic’s earlier appeal looked more like one) was a chance to at least get the win, until AJ stepped up again! Is there anyone in the crowd who saw him step up and did’nt think "oh s**t!". It was a certainty to be saved and my only surprise was how high it went instead (a la Beckham!). Why didn’t anyone in the team or on the touchline stop a guy who is clearly lacking confidence (and decent service to be fair). Is this the start of the slippery slope Biffa started on?
In the end I hope AJ gets the time to heal and comes back stronger, but in the meantime we are left with the knowledge that unless we step up two or three gears, we ain’t going to reach the group stages yet again.

I think Moyes got his tactics totally wrong would you see liverpool going playing 4-3-3 at home in Europe as for your comment "i don’t want to see him in an Everton shirt for awhile" the lads confidence has gone cause he has to spend half his time down the bloody wing looking for the ball its not his bloody fault i’m really embrassed by the way our fans such as yourself turn on our own players so quickly its just terrible just like the booing of neville at the end

Hibbert was fucking useless again!!! P Nev must be taken out of midfield. He has been consistently awful all season in there. Get Jags in the midfield who is looking good it has to be said and if Neviile must play its got to be at the back. Otherwise bench him! Tonight was one of the most ridiculous and unbelievable games I have ever been to. I’m gobsmacked! How can this be happening again? I also can’t believe that Aj was allowed to take three penalties! That’s some pressure on the lad. Needs a hell of a performance in the Ukraine now. I just hope Arteta and Tommy Gravo can dig us out of this one!!

I’ve just woken to this down in Oz. Oh dear, this is just woeful. We miss, what - was it 2 penalties. They go down to 9 men, but still take an away goal across with them to Siberia (or where ever we have to trudge across the length of Europe to). Bit harsh, still, to blame Moyes for Johnson’s misses - if a £6M Premier league striker can’t be assumed to at least be able to hit a barn door with a banjo, who can?

I’m writing this post from my desktop computer as I threw my labtop out of my ten story loft in frustration. Now I have to go buy a new laptop and I am sending AJ the bill for it. I am a big sports fan and this was the worst game that I have ever witnessed. I can’t believe what transpired tonight. Everything aside, the biggest pisser for me is that Metalist had nothing to give and somehow we managed to draw them at home. Now I know that we were limited in squad selection, but why the hell was Jagielka not starting in the midfield? Why did we sign him? What will it take for Moyes to see that Nev should not be in the midfield and Hibbo not at the back? I keep telling myself that we can still salvage the away leg if Areteta, Tommy G and even Piennar are available. Lets not forget that 2 of their starters are out for next game. Its going to be tough because they will probably keep all 10 behind the half line and hope for a draw. As far as AJ goes, his confidence is shot and he should not start versus Villa or ever. My head hurts and I have to take another dose of aspirin. I feel bad for all my blue brethren that will have to face red shite supporters in the coming games. Keep your heads up and tell the shite to fuck off!! At least you guys don’t have to go buy a new laptop tomorrow...
Let’s lay off the players and even the manager, as disappointed as we are, I’m sure they didn’t want tonight’s results as well. The worrying thing for me is that we haven’t kept a clean sheet this season, and we certainly cannot let this continue. What is interesting is that we haven’t defended badly, but lapses of concentration have let us down.
AJ must be feeling terrible now, but he hasn’t let us down with his work rate. If there’s anyone to bring back his confidence, it’s the fans.

neville ad carsley in midfield was always going to give us nothing going forwards, but what was even more shocking was that they didn’t give us anything defensively either. metalist breezed the midfield battle as carsley and neville had two of the worst, inept performances ive ever seen either put in. and then neville has the cheek to clap the fans at the end? im sorry, but he deserved the booing he got.

Moyes is fucked!!!He is becoming very repetitive with excuses that are simply laughable. This group has the potential to do some major damage in the group stage but with no self belief it may not even see the next stage. Yak 11m.....give me a break!

If Chelsea can get rid of their manager in a blink of an eye after winning everything in sight in that last few years. Then I would have no qualms with seeing Mr Moyes following him. We have some really good players but the football served up is third rate and this is the manager’s resposibility. Play decent attacking possession footbal or dont bother fuck off back to Scotland. Hibbo and Ossie are Second class. Surely Moyes will see this now. Not happy with the yak but AJ works tirelessly for the cause and cant blame him for trying to make up for 1st(2nd) penalty miss. Embarrassing home draw, but sure the boys can turn this round. Blues will score at their place with 1st choice midfield (if fit). Bring it on. In Moyes We Trust.
ive not written on this board before and am pleased that i delayed until this morning because last night i was too depressed to find any positives.firstly what on earth went wrong with the ticket situation? i heard various versions off people sitting in the upper gwladys . the simple fact is it was a cock up of mammoth proportions.something similar happened to one supporters club with blacburn rovers tickets which resulted in duplicates being issued prior to the match. for hells sake sort it out EFC and Wyness!!!
as for the game why play 3 strikers and starve their service with such a dire midfield.? i dont know what hibbert was thinking with his positioning but someone should have told him we were still playing 4 at the back and his defensive duties were unaffected!
In all honesty with Yakubus total reluctance to contribute anything to team play then we can expect AJs goal drought to continue due to all the chasing he will be doing. i only hope that Yak returns at least 20 goals or otherwise hes going to have 40000 on his back immediately and will be gone by summer!!!
saying all the negative stuff though we need to remember we were without all 4 of what are going to be our most influential , skillful and attacking midfielders- pienaar cahill arteta and gravesen. throw jagielka in as well and we have a midfield that will compete and more than likely take apart the best in the uefa.

Though I am a great fan of Lescott I would disagree with the man of the match verdict. I thought he had his poorest game for some time.
He was beaten for the goal and looked clumsy when passing the ball, I thought he had an off night, Yobo had a better game than he had.
Why wasnt Hibbert removed then they had 9 players and Vidarsson or Justiewicz put on, I dont see the point of throwing a defender upfront when you still have a sub on the bench who is an attacker.
