Analysis by Bill Kenwright
Due to financial reasons (meaning I am broke as a joke till Friday, ha-ha), I didn?t have the opportunity to go the match last night, which left me with a combination of Radio City commentary (the colourful Barry Horne included!) and extended highlights on Granada but, not having posted something apart from a few comments recently, I thought this would be a good time to put my two bob opinions across, ask a few questions and see what comes back, so here goes?I?ll be honest in the reason that has prompted this little outburst; it was the unexpected arrival of our Chairman in the Radio City commentary position last night. Now I know he splits opinions like Tyson used to split lips but he is still here and still our chairman. If I think about it, love him or hate him, he would probably still be here if he wasn?t chairman and if you?ve ever met the man or spoken to him you?d get that.
As he took Barry Horne?s headphones off him and embarrassed him by singing the ?Who Needs Cantona? song, Alan Irwin (I think is the commentators name) said his hellos and before he could ask a question Bill piped up with ?Was poor wasn?t it? But we?re through, that?s all that matters!?
Now here is the question, a simple yes or no answer will do. If you went, watched or listened did you have the same thought?
Bill went on to have an interesting, albeit short, chat with Alan about the game, season and Moyes's tenure. I?ll give you a run down of all three, let you have a little think then you can spit your opinions on the wonderful comments section:-
The Game: He was stressing that a win and passage to quarters was the most important thing as we haven?t been past the 4th round in 20 seasons, which Bill himself prompted ?Just isn?t good enough? he then went on to say midweek away at a spirited Luton side was always gonna be tough but we always looked like the side most likely to go on and win it, singling out Joleon Lescott and the returning James Vaughan for special mention.
The Season: As Bill did I will keep it brief here as the next section will explain why. If we put a few wins together in the league and climb the table as we should then the season is set up for us to push on, couple of good cup runs, get back into Europe by any means necessary and hopefully bring a bit of silverware home, because, let's face it, that?s what its all about isn?t it?
Moyes's tenure: We reminisce with Bill as he tells us about David Moyes being on his couch 6 years ago stating his aims were to have a young developing squad which is continually in the upper reaches of the league, challenging for cups and back in Europe, all this backed up by a ?willing board?, new state of the art training facility and potential stadium in development (sic!)
How many of us can argue that these aims have not been delivered? Not many other clubs have had people come in, stated their plans and then executed them in such difficult circumstances and then go on to state that they intend to keep improving, the squad, the facilities and most importantly the level of success we achieve.
We can (and should) be critical of anything that does not come up to our levels such as players performances, team performances, ticket fiasco?s and the like but just before we start going over the top in that criticism just remember where we were under previous regimes of boardroom and team management and where we are and then think on to hopefully where we are going. Because this isn?t job done, thank you very much from Bill, Davey and the club. This seems to be an ongoing process with the universally agreed aim of putting us back where we belong at the pinnacle of the English game, so we start future seasons with true genuine optimism about what we can achieve & what we can win more importantly.

Interesting article in the Sports section of The Guardian today on Daniel Levy, the Spurs Chairman, he awarded himself a pay rise of £175,000 last year, total salary up to June 2007 was £950,000.
Now after the disgraceful way Spurs handled the Martin Jol incident, imagine Blue Bill acting the same way?
He would be crucified, as it is, he does’nt take a penny in salary from the club as Chairman.

Nicely put John. A good article that gives you a reality check on where we are now compered to the Walter Smith, Peter Johnson days. I know the football has been poor quality so far but I believe were a dominant midfield player away from better things.
I agree with everything you say about Bill Kenwright, but it will count for nothing if he takes us out of the city. I hope he soon see’s the light on this issue and tells Wyness to concentrate on other options.

You’ve gotta love our beloved chairman - he may have his faults (we all do) but he’s a big blue who only ever has the clubs best interests at heart - including our move to Kirkby.
I wouldn’t swap him for any dispassionate non-evertonian overseas bloodsucker like so many other clubs have these days.

I went on Weds. Sure it wasn’t pretty ? after 5mins we were all waiting for the hour mark so we could make some changes. Only players to look prem class were Osman and Lescott. My personal opinion is that I didn’t care as long as we won. Surely Moyes’ mission that night was to get through while resting as many key players as possible ? and you’ve got to say it worked (Howard, Yobo, Arteta, Baines nowhere to be seen, all hopefully fit for Brum) although you could argue the extra time meant picking a weakened team was counter-productive. It was also the perfect time to re-blood an energetic but rusty Vaughan ? so all round I could live with the display.
Daniel Levy presided over a £25m plus profit for Spurs last year despite outspending us on players every year.

Kev Mitchell - I didn’t want to get into the issue of the ground move as I think enough has been said on the matter, we all agree a new ground is on the horizon but the location is the real point of debate. For the record I agree with you, we should remain in Liverpool.

I am stlll a bit curious as to Robert Earl’s involvement is at Everton . He arrived with the title of just being the guy who bought out Paul Gregg , now he’s a director , Robert Earl is a very astute businessman who would not buy shares in Everton just as a favour to his mate Bill , he would also not let Bill or wyeness make any silly or stupid decisions without vetoing any such decision . Robert Earl also has long term links and friendships with some other very rich entrepreneurs such as Mcmanus and, Tabor , a very rich bilionaire property developer Joe Lewis and sgnificantly Daniel Levy . Now this may all be a big coincidence but the £25m overdraft was secured not long after Earl was promoted to the board . Again , coincidence ? who knows ?

Tony your right in one respect it is subjective but that list of clubs you name is a load of shite mate. Arsenal & Man Utd and even Liverpool have hardly ever if at all been out of the so called top 4 so you’ve lost me on that one. If you mean continued to grow as a club then dont be fucking stupid with the revenue & extra exposure (more games on sky/setanta & europe) then of course you will continue to grow???

Ok Tony, but West Ham, Aston Villa and Man City have all had very wealthy benefactors throiwng lots of cash in their direction and have improved marginally over the last few years.
Liverpool, Man utd & Arsenal were already established top clubs so didn’t need to improve much, but for Man Utd & Arsenal it took 10+ years for their respectivemanagers to get them into the postions they are now.
Liverpool have chucked umpteen millions and are arguably no better than 5 years ago Premier League wise.
That only leaves Reading - who had a rich backer to aid their climb up the divisions and are now finding life tough in the Premiership for the 2nd season
Oh and Blackburn - who are probably about the only club on that list realistically comparable to us given status , funding etc and funnily enough they are still about on a par with us despite St Hughes in charge - who you seem to be convinced is far superior to Moyes.
We have gone from a position of annual relegation struggles to top half stability in 5 years with a young squad rather than the oaps we had under Walter If you don’t see that as an improvement then you might need some new glasses.

Here, here - Moyes and Kenwright have done a great job as a whole and we’re lucky to have two such dedicated, genuine individuals.

Kirkby was a Liverpool City overspill area too. That is why 99% of its residents are fucking scousers! My auntie was bombed out of her house in Netherton and eventually ended up in Kirkby. The old dear’s dead now which is probably a good thing because she’d have ripped your entrails out if you’d suggested she wasn’t a scouser. Now there is a whole branch of my family, scousers all, who are all 2nd 3rd and 4th generation Kirkbyites! In between enthusing over the moment and how we were denied future success by the Heysel Ban he seemed a genuine evertonian who loved the club and was a pleasant enough individual. Also had the good fortune that evening to have meet paul rideout, dave watson and barry horne among others.

God knows Kenwright has his weaknesses (the main one I see being not having enough money), but I do wonder if a lot of you critics ever think for a moment about what is going on at some of these other clubs?

The foreign ownership argument like all others should be put in context, isn’t it an American family that owns Man Utd and they on paper are in massive debt but can’t see them complaining as it’s still a business ran with impeccable business acumen that has reinvested in the team and facilities to boast a humungous stadium and virtually guaranteed champions league football every season to continue that financial stream.

Admitedly they havent won a pot in years but they always have good cash fl;ow to go for squad strengthening, if we had that business acumen from the likes of BK who has been here more than long enough to have shown what he can and cant do we wouldn’t be stuck with having to move to a retail park in a decaying overflow town.

I think he’s done things right and things wrong. It’s harsh to say he’s been holding us back for years. He may be a bit short on "business acumen" but it took us 4 years just to stop the rot and turn into a consistent team.

Neil BK has been here for a lot longer than just the top boy, he was on the board with Agent Johnson and think the team thanks to DM and the Sky money has turned us from relegation fodder rather than BK living his dream. DM was also recommended to BK before the who found him quotes.
I have had my doubts about Moyes taking us any further but never any about Kenwright. How do you think we would survive a buyout on borrowed money? The Birmingham game yesterday brought us Everton just trying to play good football and succeeding for much of the game. The injury time win was a great bonus but watching Pienaar/Arteta/Osman/Cahill was a real pleasure an very much worth the time and money. David Moyes...I may have been wrong!

We have gone from being offered a prime location on a World Heritage site, which would have rebranded us, secured long term financial stability to moving out of the City, into a partnership which will enable us to be surrounded by a supermarket and a new secondary school, sorry Learning Centre- It was his job to ensure that the club did find a suitable site.
We have not won anything, got to a final, got to a semi-final, or before this season played attractive football. He has presided over the Rooney Fiasco and is a aaparent liar.

Unlike LFC’s owners who have zero passion for them and are saddling them with £700m worth of debt, BK loves our club - long may he reign.
Both ’on the pitch’ - top o’ the heap of our UEFA group, Carling Cup progression, improving in the league AND ’off the pitch’ - new stadium, new training HQ and academy things are lookin’ finger lickin’ good at the moment and much of that is down to good ol’ Uncle Bill.

Thats the problem he courts the media, but has not delivered or has been capable of delivering of inward investment without moving us out of the city, how many people would have settlled for this five years ago.
