Analysis by Bill Kenwright
Due to financial reasons (meaning I am broke as a joke till Friday, ha-ha), I didn?t have the opportunity to go the match last night, which left me with a combination of Radio City commentary (the colourful Barry Horne included!) and extended highlights on Granada but, not having posted something apart from a few comments recently, I thought this would be a good time to put my two bob opinions across, ask a few questions and see what comes back, so here goes?I?ll be honest in the reason that has prompted this little outburst; it was the unexpected arrival of our Chairman in the Radio City commentary position last night. Now I know he splits opinions like Tyson used to split lips but he is still here and still our chairman. If I think about it, love him or hate him, he would probably still be here if he wasn?t chairman and if you?ve ever met the man or spoken to him you?d get that.
As he took Barry Horne?s headphones off him and embarrassed him by singing the ?Who Needs Cantona? song, Alan Irwin (I think is the commentators name) said his hellos and before he could ask a question Bill piped up with ?Was poor wasn?t it? But we?re through, that?s all that matters!?
Now here is the question, a simple yes or no answer will do. If you went, watched or listened did you have the same thought?
Bill went on to have an interesting, albeit short, chat with Alan about the game, season and Moyes's tenure. I?ll give you a run down of all three, let you have a little think then you can spit your opinions on the wonderful comments section:-
The Game: He was stressing that a win and passage to quarters was the most important thing as we haven?t been past the 4th round in 20 seasons, which Bill himself prompted ?Just isn?t good enough? he then went on to say midweek away at a spirited Luton side was always gonna be tough but we always looked like the side most likely to go on and win it, singling out Joleon Lescott and the returning James Vaughan for special mention.
The Season: As Bill did I will keep it brief here as the next section will explain why. If we put a few wins together in the league and climb the table as we should then the season is set up for us to push on, couple of good cup runs, get back into Europe by any means necessary and hopefully bring a bit of silverware home, because, let's face it, that?s what its all about isn?t it?
Moyes's tenure: We reminisce with Bill as he tells us about David Moyes being on his couch 6 years ago stating his aims were to have a young developing squad which is continually in the upper reaches of the league, challenging for cups and back in Europe, all this backed up by a ?willing board?, new state of the art training facility and potential stadium in development (sic!)
How many of us can argue that these aims have not been delivered? Not many other clubs have had people come in, stated their plans and then executed them in such difficult circumstances and then go on to state that they intend to keep improving, the squad, the facilities and most importantly the level of success we achieve.
We can (and should) be critical of anything that does not come up to our levels such as players performances, team performances, ticket fiasco?s and the like but just before we start going over the top in that criticism just remember where we were under previous regimes of boardroom and team management and where we are and then think on to hopefully where we are going. Because this isn?t job done, thank you very much from Bill, Davey and the club. This seems to be an ongoing process with the universally agreed aim of putting us back where we belong at the pinnacle of the English game, so we start future seasons with true genuine optimism about what we can achieve & what we can win more importantly.

Now after the disgraceful way Spurs handled the Martin Jol incident, imagine Blue Bill acting the same way?
He would be crucified, as it is, he does’nt take a penny in salary from the club as Chairman.
Credit where it’s due.
I agree with everything you say about Bill Kenwright, but it will count for nothing if he takes us out of the city. I hope he soon see’s the light on this issue and tells Wyness to concentrate on other options.
I wouldn’t swap him for any dispassionate non-evertonian overseas bloodsucker like so many other clubs have these days.
Where do you think the 20 million to buy Johnson out came from.Bill didnt have a dime to his name until he took over EFC.
Directors can all claim not to take a salary but there is a very large expense account instead. Now granted he doesnt take a million a year but thereagain look at Spurs profits and also wait to see how much is secreted out of the "Kirkby"coffers and ask yourself could Goodison have been redeveloped for what EFC will have to contribute to Kirkby.
Bullshit Billy is no more than a nice version of Derek Hatton i.e. con man for all seasons.
I’d be happy if Bill paid himself £1m a year if it resulted in us being financially secure.
As it is his inability to run the business side of the club properly means we are faced with the prospect of moving to a cheap stadium in another town just so he can keep control.
Jack Randall - I’m probably more Ken Dodd than Richard Dodd ha ha!! Just dont ask where I work!! ssssssssss
Kev Mitchell - I didn’t want to get into the issue of the ground move as I think enough has been said on the matter, we all agree a new ground is on the horizon but the location is the real point of debate. For the record I agree with you, we should remain in Liverpool.
Liverpool,Arsenal,Man Utd,
Portsmouth. All have become bigger and stronger in the past few years but you seem to think its only Moyes at Everton who has done any good. Its nonesense mate. The money pouring in to the game these past few years has enabled many clubs to progress and Everton are just one of many to have benefited. from it.
Who is to say we would not be in an even greater position now if DM had not been manager and some one like Coppell or Hughes was in charge. Its all subjective and has no solid basis as an arguement to say Moyes is the only one capable of improving Everton. All that dosh he has spent sure helps though.
Take a look at the league and tell me all of those clubs I mention are not better off than they were 5 years ago.
All you are offering to the debate is cheap innuendo, SHOW ME THE PROOF.
I’ve never claimed BK is a saint, merely pointing out that he is a non-paid chairman.
As for BK not having a dime to his name, suggest you do your homework a bit better and you will realise he is quite a successful west end producer or have’nt you noticed.
Reading and portsmouth thank thier lucky stars every day their in the premiership never mind doing ok, but the wheels will more than likely come off them clubs as current adminidstration goes (eg - Bolton) you could probably band West Ham in that bunch as they have yo-yo’ed out the prem and apart from one decent season are still shite & have spent a shitload of cash!!!
Villa & City are very similar to ourselves but have the advantage of having recent massive foreign investment & last time I looked are not or haven’t been in europe for some time!!
Now everyone one here knows how much you dont like Kenwright or Moyes for that matter but why cant you comment on the article sensibly without your opinions turning you into a rambling idiot?
To be honest Tony ask yourself this, would you rather be one of them clubs you mentioned? If so, you know what I mean......mate
Liverpool, Man utd & Arsenal were already established top clubs so didn’t need to improve much, but for Man Utd & Arsenal it took 10+ years for their respectivemanagers to get them into the postions they are now.
Liverpool have chucked umpteen millions and are arguably no better than 5 years ago Premier League wise.
That only leaves Reading - who had a rich backer to aid their climb up the divisions and are now finding life tough in the Premiership for the 2nd season
Oh and Blackburn - who are probably about the only club on that list realistically comparable to us given status , funding etc and funnily enough they are still about on a par with us despite St Hughes in charge - who you seem to be convinced is far superior to Moyes.
We have gone from a position of annual relegation struggles to top half stability in 5 years with a young squad rather than the oaps we had under Walter If you don’t see that as an improvement then you might need some new glasses.
We don’t have a rich benefactor, therefore the premier league cash we get is the same as anybody else - so to continue to progress is still quite an achievement that I for one am grateful for.
Mr Marsh lists Blackburn,West ham,Aston Villa,Reading,ManCity and Portsmouth as teams that have progressed but I dont see one of these teams achieving more than Everton have in the last 5 seasons. Blackburn didn’t they get knocked out of Europe by a team we’ve just beat. West Ham didn’t they survive on the last day of the season, Villa, City and Portsmouth are these team in Europe?? It great to forcast that these sides will do better than Everton in the future but thats just a FORCAST.
The true facts have been made in the last 5 years and we’ve acheived more than any of these sides have with less money. So what does that say about our Manager and the progression of this club.
Marshy’s not a scouser, Marshy’s not a scouser!
Haha
Just kidding Tony :-)
Foreign wealthy businessmen may be the soup du jour but remember, they’re in it purely for the money.
Kenwright and Moyes have their faults and make mistakes as we all do but I’m a much happier Evertonian than I was before they came along!!
Nelson St,Pitt St,Fredrick St. etc and were shipped to Huyton after world war 2 because all the houses had been blown up by the German Bombs.Something that needs to happen to you.By your reckoning the likes of Freddy Star,Peter Ried,Alan Bleasdale,Steven Gerrard, are not Scousers.
Sorry mate - is that Huyton or Kirby you’re talking about?
Kirkby was a Liverpool City overspill area too. That is why 99% of its residents are fucking scousers! My auntie was bombed out of her house in Netherton and eventually ended up in Kirkby. The old dear’s dead now which is probably a good thing because she’d have ripped your entrails out if you’d suggested she wasn’t a scouser. Now there is a whole branch of my family, scousers all, who are all 2nd 3rd and 4th generation Kirkbyites! Whenever I go to Kirkby I don’t feel as though I’ve left Liverpool any more than I notice the difference between the two halves of Huyton!
And while we are on about the two halves of Huyton. Doesn’t this show how arbitrary these latterday boudaries are? Just lines on a map that the scouse culture totally ignores.
How many times are evertonians gonna be treated like dirt by the people running the club? its just laughable, it just does not end does it?how many more times are the people running our club gonna put us through ticketing failures? its just another failure to add to an ever growing list of failures.
is a great place and the people are the salt of the earth. It doesnt mean I want EFC to be there though.St Helens folk think St Helens is a wonderfull place and thats only a mile away from Kirkby.See how silly it gets?
We are relocating to Kirkby are we not?
Mind you, im not a liverpool resident, but it was frustrating when all sorts of angles were put forward on the stadium move, and i could not vote for a club i have supported for nigh on thirty years, simply because i was in the wrong location.
With regard to Kenwright, ive only met the man once, at the post Fa cup win banquet in 1995. In between enthusing over the moment and how we were denied future success by the Heysel Ban he seemed a genuine evertonian who loved the club and was a pleasant enough individual. Also had the good fortune that evening to have meet paul rideout, dave watson and barry horne among others.
Tottenham is the obvious one - they have made themselves the laughing stock of English football, and are clearly run by a bunch of cack-handed idiots. Bolton have just appointed Gary Megson as their manager (nuff said). Man City are owned by a man who can’t go back to his own country due to human rights charges. Our good neighbours by a couple of Bush funders who are clearly solely motivated by making a buck out of the Reds. Birmingham are in turmoil, West Ham trying to emerge from driving a coach and horses through league rules (and lucky not to have been domoted to the Championship), and Newcastle are facing constant squabbling amongst their owners and former owners. And we won’t even mention Leeds United.
Okay, he’s hardly perfect, but I wouldn’t swap Kenwright for any of these. Would you?
You can’t win mate. Just stay the happier of the Blue bunch - it’s better than being miserable all the time.
Like everything in life, you can either be negative or positive about things - everyone is different, we should just all accept that and get on with supporting the team on the pitch.
An article some time ago showed how a number of clubs took on big loans some time ago and sadly comparing the use of that loan by two of the clubs Everton and Newcastle, Everton ended up with fly by night players for the blink of an eye and Newcastle ended up with a bloody big stadium and guaranteed income from increased bums on seats. Admitedly they havent won a pot in years but they always have good cash fl;ow to go for squad strengthening, if we had that business acumen from the likes of BK who has been here more than long enough to have shown what he can and cant do we wouldn’t be stuck with having to move to a retail park in a decaying overflow town.
Successful theatre promoter is another way to describe a ticket tout surely?
PS Dicky thought you couldnt post or you would get the sack from Stalag Sefton Poll Tax?
We have made massive progress under BK and Moyes and have gone from a laughing stock to a well respected side.
Now Now Madden I can sense a bit of sarcassim in you. Twit
I knew it was a matter of time before you attemted to reopen the stadium debate
I hate fellow blues suffering, all proper Evertonians do, yet you continue to rejoice in their misery, your stomach turning gloating to the guys who fear their world may be coming to an end proves what most people already knew
You dont belong
What was this piece about again?
Oh, that’s right, Kenwright.
I think he’s done things right and things wrong. It’s harsh to say he’s been holding us back for years. He may be a bit short on "business acumen" but it took us 4 years just to stop the rot and turn into a consistent team.
I read in the comments above "If we had somebody with capital and a good business brain Everton would have took off years ago."
Well you don’t say. Money and business know how would lead to success. If we had all the best players and the best manager we would have won the league by now. It’s so easy, what’s the hold up?
I’m not saying that BK is here to stay because he helped turn things round, but I will always remember his arrival as a turning point. Despite his many fuck ups I still respect what he did for the club. However, if a pretender for his position comes forward I will form my opinion based on merit. If I feel that a new investor is right for EFC then there will be no room for sentiment and I too will call for BK to step down and let somebody else have a go.
Bill Kenwright ? A potted history of hopes, quotes and mendacity
"I now hope they get a pat on the back for securing the backing of Liverpool Vision to build a new stadium on the Kings Dock. I know it still has to be ratified by English Partnership in July, but surely they are not going to overturn the advice from key people on Merseyside."
A year ago, the Kings Dock wasn?t even on the agenda. Bill Kenwright has had the finger pointed at him, but much of that was a throw-back to the previous regime. In this instance, we have to say a powerful: "Well done."? - from the Echo 2004
"Everton still await news of Geneva-based financier Chris Samuelson?s proposed purchase of a 29.9% stake in the club.
- Most repeated statement of the year. In November, Samuelson ? brought on board by Bill Kenwright ? was finally posted lost, joining the ranks of Lord Lucan, Shergar and the Kings Dock ? eh also from the Echo
"Are you trying to tell me there?s a bigger club than Everton?" ? Everton owner Bill Kenwright when asked if Wayne Rooney might eventually join a ?bigger club? than the Goodison Park outfit.
"Whatever happens with the sale, if it happens it will be down to the manager? He has the final say." - at David Moyes as Bill Kenwright makes him solely responsible for selling Wayne Rooney. Nice try, Bill, but it didn?t work.
"I feel numb," Bill Kenwright, told the Liverpool Echo, ?but I got the best deal I could for Everton Football Club."
You see Bill is not one of us, Everton are an investment to him which I don?t object to at all but he runs the club like a plaything. His main business is elsewhere. I don?t trust him not just because I found all these quotes etc in ten minutes on the net. He has not delivered.
We have gone from being offered a prime location on a World Heritage site, which would have rebranded us, secured long term financial stability to moving out of the City, into a partnership which will enable us to be surrounded by a supermarket and a new secondary school, sorry Learning Centre- It was his job to ensure that the club did find a suitable site.
We have not won anything, got to a final, got to a semi-final, or before this season played attractive football. He has presided over the Rooney Fiasco and is a aaparent liar.
As much as I hate to admit it those Kopites bastards who taunted us with the ?The City is all ours? were right, the sad fact is that Big Blue Bill has sanctioned it on his watch.
Tony Marsh may well have some extreme opinions but he is correct when he infers that Kenwright is not to be trusted as much for his lack of apparent business accumen as he is for the half truths that have charachterised his reign.
ps: I bet you the ticketing is better for his West End, US shows than it is for Everton games.
Unlike LFC’s owners who have zero passion for them and are saddling them with £700m worth of debt, BK loves our club - long may he reign.
Both ’on the pitch’ - top o’ the heap of our UEFA group, Carling Cup progression, improving in the league AND ’off the pitch’ - new stadium, new training HQ and academy things are lookin’ finger lickin’ good at the moment and much of that is down to good ol’ Uncle Bill.
:)
He is an actor for gods sake, so what he is an Everton supporter and he gives the odd good soundbite, why does that suprise you. He is like a general in the first world war, missing when the mud and bullets are flying about ask Moyes and fatty Wyness I am sure they will vouch for that.
Thats the problem he courts the media, but has not delivered or has been capable of delivering of inward investment without moving us out of the city, how many people would have settlled for this five years ago. I dont think he is a monster just a bit of a coward who has a history of half truths and incompetence
sabbatic goat??? who the fcuk r you! probably sum gypsy inbred from luxembourg. btw did any1 on here go to the metalist ?carcraft? game in the ukraine?? wondering if any1 seen bill kenright in the stands with us cos am sure i seen?? :S
