I think we're going places!
I feel its time I let everyone know just how pleased I am with Everton's recent progress. I've read all the letters about 'Moyes taking us as far as he can' and 'A couple of defeats and we'll be in the bottom half', but for me, I only have good things to say about Moyes and the team.We are now comfortably looking to be a part of the group just outside the big three in the league (I just won't put the Kopites in with them to make it the big four). We now are winning a hell of a lot more games than I've been used to in recent years and I genuinely approach most games with a realistic hope of winning them. We are progressing in Europe (albeit early doors) and with players coming back from injury we are starting to look like a very decent side.
We no longer need to worry that our best players are going to jump ship or that the club are going to 'cash in' on our obvious assets. The team looks well bonded and there seems to be a good spirit amongst the players. Our squad is growing by the season and not diminishing, we've the youngsters coming through who fingers crossed seem to have very bright futures and at last Moyes seems to have some selection headaches for the right reasons!
Yakubu has his critics, but for me he is going to be a quality addition. Lescott, Arteta, Cahill are all top class. Around them we are looking good also with the likes of Pienaar also starting to shine and Leighton Baines is also looking like a very good player. The average age of our squad is coming down all the time and Moyes is putting together a good mix of youth and experience.
Moyes has made mistakes, everybody does, but in general he's done and is continuing to do a lot more right than wrong! Every season that passes. He is making us stronger and we are now starting to flourish. The road ahead is a tough one, but I am very happy with where we are so far.
I realize that in three or four games time we may have lost a couple and the doom mungers will reappear, but not me, I'm absolutely made up with the blues right now. We are not the finished article and at times its been tough to watch. We also need to strengthen further in certain areas, but I'm sure this will happen given time. We all know the weak links, but they are getting fewer by the season and I'm hopefull that will continue over the next couple of years.
I know alot of people will disagree strongly with what I have to say and I know the sort of arguments that may appear: 'If we hadn't of scored 2 in the last minute on Saturday we'd of drawn against a poor side', 'Hibberts awful' etc.... but this is an ongoing project that I am certain is moving in the right direction and with a little more patience and understanding I genuinely think we are going places! Well done Moyes and the Boys, keep it up!

I like the article. Pretty much mirrors how I?m feeling at the moment. I think in general there?s a good feeling among the majority of blue noses at the mo! Let?s enjoy and look forward!
Good to see the ghost of Doddy lives on. Some people are very easily satisfied. We are still a very average side ? look at the league table!
I’m feeling great too! Tim Cahill is clearly very important to the team, but the run of results go to show how vital Carsley is... and how vital he’s been these last few seasons.
Its simple... if Carsley doesn’t play in that holding role, we’re vunerable against anyone. He’s so incredibly disciplined, more so than Neville could ever be in CM... then the talent of Arteta, Cahill, Ossie & Pienaar can keep the ball and create.

I agree with the article on the whole. The thing is...and I?m not trying to be miserable here, is that we dont seem to have the ability to finish teams off. I dont know if its a physical or a mental thing. Take the Birmingham game. At 1-0 up you could feel the air of fear and trepidation around the ground, and sure enough, we let them back into it. Sure, we showed great spirit to win the game, but we should have had the game dead and buried before half time.We need to learn to finish teams off or we will continue to get bitten on the arse!!

Good article, Ian. I think everyone, including the doubters sense a recent up-swing. The sense of injustice from the Merseyside derby has allowed us to move on to the next matches much better than I feared, and the ’team spirit’ seems to be returning to the level of a few years ago, with a lot of the newer signings coming on-board too.
However, there are so many of us who have experienced false dawns in the past, so forgive us for still remaining cautious to a large extent. The next few weeks have the potential to make or break our season, or at least clarify what our current level is.
Firstly tomorrow night’s game v Nurnberg will show us if we have enough Euro-calibre to the team. I’ll accept a draw, but a win should be within our grasp, as they are no great shakes this year, it seems. The Chelsea game will be yet another test to see how close to the big boys we are - will we fail to bridge the gap (the case in recent Man Utd games - I still feel the pain of last season’s reversal). The Carling Cup tie against West Ham is for me the most important one of them all, as that’s one where only a win will do. I’m dying for a domestic cup run, even in this competition!
If we come through these three games with some positives, I’ll echo your optimism. If we don’t, then I fear another under-achieving season of mediocrity - which will hurt me even more, because I do think that with the likes of Cahill, Arteta, Lescott, AJ, Baines and Graveson, and the potential of Vaughan, Anichebe, Piennar etc. (even the Yak if we continues to notch up his performance game-on-game), we have quite a good team! Perhaps where I’ve got the best vibes at present is with the improving standard of our subs bench, especially when the last one or two absentees return to fitness. For the first time in many seasons, we’ll have subs on the bench who will be good enough, and keen enough, to want to prove they deserve to start the next game and who the fans will welcome seeing as well (I can only think of a couple of obvious exceptions who Moyes still persists with, but this is not the post to get negative). It’s that build up in the squad quality and the fact that we won’t necessarily be losing any of them to other teams in the medium-term that means we may indeed heading in the right direction, Ian. Fingers-crossed eh? COYB!

Did you see at half time in the Larrissa game, Tommy Grav and Jagielka out on the field, it looked like they were having a ball, all smiles and luaghing.. Jumping on each others backs. I feel that a lot of the closeness throughout the team is due to a number of really strong personalities that we have here, Cahill and Stubbsy to name two. I love it I really do. The players seem to be enjoying their football. I even spotted Yakubu grinning from ear to ear last weekend, and that wasn’t directly after his goal.

A well written piece Nick. I agree that Moyes has done a great deal of good for Everton during his 5 year tenure. Remember it’s taken 5 years to reach this stage. Moyes is the third longest serving manager in the premiership (with the same club) after Fergie & Wenger. We should not let expectations run too wild - look at the preposterous situation at Spurs who sacked a decent manager after a few bad results !! clearly 2 consequtive finishes in 5th place is not good enough.

Excellent article that reflects the positive overwhelming feeling of the fanbase. The club is deffo going places and on and off the pitch things will hopefully get even better.
I’m sure there’ll be some right ol’ miseries on to change the tone but away from the t’internet they’re only a tiny minority in reality.

Real progress will however be when we pick up points against the top six. Probably not many fans realise that so far this season, all of our six wins have been against six of the bottom seven teams, so we have not done the business against the better sides.
Hopefully we can start with at least a point on Sunday against Chelsea. If we go at them and rough up their defence we could even get all three. And, despite the frustations, I still get excited watching the blue boys.

Good article Ian. One thing that jumped out was in your last paragraph about 2 late goals winning the game last weekend. I seem to recall a certain team winning the CL back in ’99 the same way! That’s football.

While i would agree that we have moved on from the days of Mike Walker, Walter Smith and the calibre of players such as Claus Thomsen and Michel Madar, the class of players has increased albeit to a degree.
I went to Carrow road in 1987 to witness Van den Hauwe score and seal our second league tilte in three seasons but i am sadly aware that i will not have that privilege again in my lifetime. Any supporters out there who think we are going to be premier league champions any time soon is sadly lacking.
I will admit we have a group of good players who on their day will give anyone a run for their money and there is an outside chance of bringing a trophy back home for the first time since a Conservative Government, but come May i will not be at all surprised if the Goodison trophy cabinet is once more vacant.
You will pardon my pessimism but Ive had twenty years of disappointment now and the Fa Cup win barely papers over the cracks.

I too have followed the blues through the dark days and yes you can never be certain that a corner has been turned at this stage, but I just have a good feeling about everything at the moment. I know its easy to say this (or easier at least) when you’ve had three or four good results on the bounce, but I can honestly say that although this has helped my views, its not the be all and end all. I just feel the club is looking much better than I’ve seen for years. Obviously results will decide how far we have come, but I’m very confident at the moment.
As for the ’easily pleased’ comments...maybe so, but I’m genuinely happy at the mo so why shouldn’t we enjoy it, easily pleased or not?

I agree with your article entirely. we are progressing and getting stronger each team. Unfortunately so are our immediate competitors (outside the top 3) therefore we aren’t making progress as quickly as some would like. fortunately for us we have in house satbilised growth and should not suffer from the inevitable boom and bust scenario that several large clubs will experience in the future.
Nice to read something positive, definately. I also agree that we at times seem incapable of (or just not consistent in) finishing teams off, but I think that, too, is changing. Moyes has done well, and hasn’t watching the team play lately just been a joy? I keep seeing that little flick from Pienaar to Osman... that was so pretty!!! This is a new school, maybe there’s no need to invoke the School of Science!

Yes its been a absolute treat.Thewaywe were almost embarrassed by the ukraine players. A first leg perfomance that would of had greats like labone and ball turning in their graves. And the return had me in two minds whether we would get through for 89 minutes until anichebe came up with the goods.
And with all due respect to Luton, they have a great bunch of players and are a lovely club, that tie really should have been put to bed long before timothy came to our rescue.
And even in the last fixture, we should have been out of sight long before the equalizer, and it was only lee carsleys annual blockbuster that got us out of jail.

Flaherty, perhaps you don’t recall how we played last season, or the season before that, or the season before that... this year is an improvement. Pass play is better, and finishing is getting better. But some folks are harder to please than others.

Mr Flaherty, bully on you for having seen some of the greatest squads this team has ever assembled - I assume you mean the sqaud of the mid-80’s, when both the red and blue side of Merseyside were the cream of the global game, never mind the English one. If this is what you refer to, then it is little surprise that you hold such high standards. The game has changed some, however, in that time, and the money is definately on the red side of town, so we look at the positives and commend what progress we see. That is all I am saying. Nil Satis Nisi Optimum is a great statement of intent, but reality has the nasty habit of making us face facts, and facts are that unless you have a sugar daddy like an Abramovich or a Glazer, you’ll find it hard to be the best in today’s game. And don’t say "end of discussion", sir. It’s a polite conversation, is all.
We need a good run in the Milk Cup. Our 80?s revival started with Adrian Heath scoring in the Milk Cup semi finals.
After that it was all upwards for us for the rest of 80?s

This is all a bit positive for Evertonians! Where is Tony Marsh when you need him! Lol! We’ve got Chelsea and Pompey away in the next few weeks so if results go against us expect the doom-mongers to return. I for one agree with Ian in that we’ve been going in the right direction on the pitch since Moyes arrived but recognise that there are some big problems at the club which, for me, are mostly in the boardroom. Don’t know if Man city and our squad are really in the same situation... we don’t have a corrupt ex-prime minister of a small asian country who ran off with its last three years of GDP in his back pocket running our club... but I digress... let’s get a win tonight, and hold out against Chelski on the weekend.
Phil, You do digress - I was talking about quality of playing squad, we have blue bill and a plan.......... ok it?s loooooooooooooooooong term, but we are making progress.
Having just watched what was a reasonable but not over-inspiring performance, dare I say that the best moments were without doubt, when Everton kept the ball down and passed around. While this is a joy to behold, the defenders kept watsing possession or good attacking situations (phil neville a prime offender here). Still, the transition to becoming a decent footballing side continues.

We?ve done a lot this season, fortunately due to Channel 5 I?ve been able to watch some of the better occasions. I don?t think will win the League, but it is clearly a better side than we?ve had for a long time. I might be proved wrong in the future, but we feel consistent.
