Alan Green and Radio 5
I know this has been said time and time again, but Alan Green and Radio 5 Live was again a disgrace last night. Living in London and not having Sky I was unable to watch the game and so had to listen on Radio 5. Green along with the other presenter (they do 20 mins each of the half ? how hard can it be to do the whole 90mins??), a John Murray, were so biased it was unreal. I even started to think to myself am I being parnoid about this, as it was so full on.In the first half Murray stated something along of how unlucky Chelsea are missing the likes of "Terry, England captain, Lampard, England Int'l, Ballack, German Int'l and Drogba, Ivory Coast Int'l and best striker in the world" and how they were missing a semi final. No mention of the fact we were missing Yobo, Piennar and the Yak to the ANC, not through injury, through no fault of our own and of course our first choice and future England left back Baines. As Cottee later mentioned on Sky Sports (he is not much help either in the Blues cause, he seemed to sit there saying how good Chelsea were) the three at the ANC are the spine of our team. Why dismiss this fact?
To top it off when Green did his 20 min stint either half all he would say when we touched the ball was along the lines of 'terrible pass', 'what is he thinking', 'that's an awful tackle', yet when Chelsea done anything, it was 'beautiful ball' or 'lovely play'. In fact the only thing that he said against them was when Makele was rolling around like he had been shot and Valente had not touched him.
Finally the thing that got me was when Green said, "So now Everton only have the league to play for". No mention of the Ufea Cup and being in the last 32 ? could you imagine it if it was Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Man Utd ? he would know and make sure we knew. Why is it he cannot even give us the courtsey of knowing what we are competing in. It is almost like there is an hidden agenda. The man is a cretin (does anyone know if he is a Redshite fan?)
Actually Green did say one thing that was spot on when he said "....why would anyone listen to me". For once we agree Green you tit.

Anelka hit the bar early second half and they stated that it would have been tie over... just one example for you, but it was going on all night... apparently on certain types of TV you can turn the commentary off... sweet!
He is despised by Alex Ferguson for his comments in the past.
He caused trouble when he stated Sylvester Stallone’s Limo may have its wheels nicked being parked outside Goodison.
He is despised also by BBC television people who wont let him appear on TV on BBC football programmes.
Commentators irritating or not are paid to commentate what goes on spout statistics etc not make personal remarks particularly slagging off players when they themselves have never kicked a football in anything more than a Sunday Pub League match.
I often listen to 5 and cringe on some of the remarks he makes about players no matter who is playing and I am sure he has had his lights threatened to be punched out by many a player in the past.
He should take a leaft out of some ultra professional commentators like Martin Tyler who do a professional job commentating on a match and leave the personal insults to one side. I put him with John McCririck as one of the most irritating and annoying people one loves to hate.
He deliberately tries to provoke a reaction because it gets people talking (phoning) and keeps him in the limelight, we’ve all fallen for it yet again.
When you factor in his disrespect for anyone outside the ?big four? (it feels like particularly Everton but perhaps other fans feel the same way) and the way he categorises almost every game as a personal disappointment to him, then you have someone who is also offensive.
On top of all that he is a fecking know-all who refers to people as ?son? as he ticks them off from the gantry. I don?t love to hate him, I just hate him.
The only deficiency in the Wikipedia run down of Green’s make -up is that it denies the fact that he is indeed, as Marcus Dawson correctly asserts, a kopite. And a rancid one at that.
Alan McInally was giving his ’expert’ opinion on Soccer Saturday a couple of weeks back and said "the one player who makes Everton tick is Thomas Graveson"!!! WTF?? What year did he last watch an Everton match. And these guys are paid ’football experts’!
An expert in any other field would be expected to thoroughly research his subject. Can you imagine a Sky News political correspondent saying something like "Sadam Hussein is behind all the problems in Iraq, something needs to be done about him"!
Compare and contrast him with someone like Jonathan Pearce, whose vocal style admittedly can be irritating, but at least Pearce proves through what he says that he has done a ton of research on the teams involved and actually sounds pleased to be doing his job.
As for Green on 606 his ignorance of the issues callers raise is cringeworthy.
Unless of course the subject under discussion happens to bedelightful friends across the park at which point his knowledge of affairs suddenly becomes encyclopaedic and frankly forensic in its attention to detail.
Can’t think why that would be. Can you?
Yes, Green is a red shite fan. He writes a weekly column for an Irish daily newspaper and he has admitted on a number occasions to being so. I have often listened to his commentarys on 5 Live ( through necessity)and I feel that it is a reflection of the declining standards of public broadcasting that the Beeb have him employed.
If Carlsberg did the most biased or obnoxious commentators in the World, he would be it.
He’s obnoxious, but hey, if you put a microphone in front of a Kopite, that’s what you usually get..
Do as I do & never listen or watch a programme he is involved with cos he’s gobshite. If you give him an audience or react to his articles you are doing what he wants.
Never complimentary towards the Blues, he always dismisses us a long-ball side who play ugly football.
As a working journalist myself, I found his comments last night, about the tie being over after the Chelsea goal and Everton having nothing but fourth place to play for, outrageous and unprofessional.
He might deny any Red allegiance, so why is he always on duty at Anfield? Even on Monday night, with Liverpool sliding down the league, there is Green covering the Aston Villa game when you would expect one of Five Live’s ’lesser lights’ such as Connor McNamara or Ian Brown to be there.
I’m all for giving reporting jobs to reporters and not ex-players, but last night we would have had a fairer, balanced radio commentary had summariser Graham Taylor taken over the mike full time from this so-called journalist!
Alex Ferguson won?t do ANY interviews with the BBC (TV or Radio) because of his ongoing row with Green.
But I take the point that with all the other forms of media, why listen to him?
Regarding Peter Reid, (Martin Doherty?s comment) I don?t think he was suckered in by the spin, I think he was genuinely gutted that we didn?t get near Chelsea last night. He was as hyped up for this game as any other fan (did you see how wound up he got at Avram Grant?s pre-match comments about us???) but at the end he was totally deflated. As we all were.
There are pundits worth listening to, two fabulous ex-Liverpool defenders regularly sing our praises on MoD, as indeed does an ex Liverpool striker (Stan Collymore) because they watch more football and think about it more.
But getting back to last night, we need to accept what happened. Had Everton played like Chelsea then we’d be ecstatic. They were superb, strong & composed and easily the better team.
Conversely I thought we, with the exception of maybe 10 mins in the 1st half, fell short in a big way. To see us resorting to hoof-ball is bad enough. But to do that when the only target is 5’ 8" and with a gorilla on each shoulder, and to by-pass a 5-man midfield in the process, is unacceptable.
The pattern of the game was evident after 30 mins at most and it was then that Anichebe should have been brought on. Worst case, half time. Cahill was invisible and should have been taken off a half-time for Vaughan. Easy to say, but it seemed to me after 30 mins that we would never score.
DM has been excellent in so many ways. But the one area that he consistently falls short is tactics or, more precisely, substitutions. He is so reluctant to change things around that it sometimes beggars belief. Last night we were up against it. But to keep wellying the ball back to Chelsea and have to win it back was suicidal nonsense.
For the last 20 mins Arteta looked fed up. And well he might be. Our passing was rubbish, although passing is easier when your colleagues move around a bit. We fell back into old ways and it was bad, very bad. AJ, I’m afraid, looked like a boy amongst men. Fernandez’s crisp passing was too crisp for some. Osman shouldn’t have played, he wasn’t fit. The signs of frustration were there for all to see with Carsley losing his cool & repeated fouling in the first half.
So, I’m flat as a pancake today and deeply pissed off. Don’t mind losing if we’ve done our best, but whatever anyone says, no way in this world was that our best. Lack of thought & courage with tactics and team selection, no leadership and, on occasions, god awful passing. We were crap last night & didn’t deserve it.
Prick that he is, I’m afraid Alan Green’s take on the game was not far away from mine. I was exasperated by the end as I though we didn’t go down fighting and we just lost the plot. Moyes really should have influenced that game more than he did. I only hope he reflects upon that and acquires some courage for the future.
Shite!
The lad on radio city is great i think.
The whole tone was very negative towards Everton, but Alan Green was definitely at his worst.
He is so transparent it is untrue. Presumably needled by Wenger’s belittling of his beloved Anfield’s atmosphere he kept banging on about how quiet Goodison had become after conceding the goal with people leaving before the end.
He also complained about his view being obstructed by pillars (no-one else mentioned). It was while he was moaning about the state of the ground that his co-commentator (David Pleat?) had to point out what a fantastic atmosphere there was.
I also noticed the ignorant comment about only having the league to concentrate on now. Ignorance is what you come to expect from Alan Green.
***TAKE THIS AS GOSPEL LADS AS I WILL SWEAR THIS IS TRUE***.
Alan Green’s father was in my dad’s petrol station over here in Belfast.
His father told the guy working for my dad that Alan tries to get him over to watch all the Liverpool home games but he refuses to go over with him as he has no interest in watching Liverpool.
The guy asked his father if it was true Alan was a Man Utd fan, but he said "no, he’s definitely a diehard Liverpool man through and through".
Again i swear this is true bill and have 5-6 people who will testify to this being the truth.
if you listen to him, you deserve everything you get!
I am actually more astonished by the fact that the fat ugly mono-syllabic twat gets paid from licence fee money!
I stopped listening to his biased, unthoughtful and condescending drivvel long ago, but I know what you mean!
Green is a vile, rancid, biased, talentless, dog-licking sack of monkey shite. He is the most obvious red shite lover and always moans about having to commentate at Goodison. The fact that he gets well paid for what he does (very little, and that badly) has always stuck in my throat. Thank Christ there are many other outlets on which to see/hear the match. I always switch off 5 live if that scum sucking, opinionated pile of road-kill is on.
He’s bitter that he’s never got on TV, bitter that LFC have been eclipsed by Manure & Arsenal and twists everything he says to suit his own warped perspective.
Clearly, he’s a bit worried that we are giving his Reda a run for their money in the League ao don’t expect the sniping to stop. He ought to be disciplined or sacked for using a National Radio Station to air his opinions and very few real facts.
I watched on Sky and it was so pro Chelsea. At the start of the second half Ian Darke said "Chelsea are only 45 minutes away from Wembley." I thought both teams were 45 minutes away from Wembley depending on the outcome of the second half.
Finally, we weren’t good enough... but we are getting there. Keep the faith.
He wrote a really pathetic article at the end of the season we came fourth saying it was because liverpool were concentrating on the CL. Definitely a red.
It tickles me now knowing that he must be gutted seeing us above his beloved redshite.
Weird guy.
But it really does annoy me when former players who are supposed to know better don’t do us any justice.
What gets me is that some of our fans seem to be suckered in by the hype. Someone above says Reid was gutted we ’didn’t get near Chelsea’ and someone else says we’d be chuffed if we’d played like they did or something similar. Granted, the quality of Chelsea throughout the side is inevitable better than ours, but in Wednesday’s match we were the better team. The difference was Petr Cech making 3-4 massive saves, and the ref bailing him out when he made a mistake. That wasn’t a foul, imagine 1-0 Everton at that stage...
Is it just me or do the possession, shots on target and territory stats not bear this out? We outplayed Chelsea, but Cech and a brilliant moment from Joe Cole proved the difference. Stop believing the Sky, Green, Platt bullshit. Watch the game again, or at least check the statistics of it.
Green did nothing but say sarcastic twaty comments about everton all night.
Ha Ha where are they in the league though greeno?
Its not just here people are slating him.

Then towards the end "All Everton have to play for this season is 4th place in the league" ...eh hum ? what Europe Mr Green or have you written us off in that one as well!! Needless to say there were other digs, but these two really stood out. What a fool that guy is.
