Up And Coming Talent!

Comments (29)

Just seen an article in the Guardian which lists the top 20 young English players aged 18 and under. I was very pleased to see Rodwell and Baxter listed and rated quite highly in the article.

What was most pleasing and not that surprising is that Liverpool dont have any listed at all. Which makes me wonder would I be be happy to go down the route of paying money for young foreign players who may make it (fabregas etc) or to stick with our policy of producing the next Rooney,Vaughan,Anichebe etc.

Having thought about it I am happy with our policy and proud of how we do things.

What about Gosling? Isn?t he meant to be a budding star? Only ask as haven?t heard his name for a while.

I'm for one am very proud about our youth. We have a great mix within our squad and starting 11 and credit to dm for the way he gives them a taste and then sends them back to reality. These boys are EVERTON....

Ross Barkley is another name who has been getting good reviews, especially after his performance against Wales in the recent Victory Shield game. He’s only 16 though. Still, hopefully he will keep developing.

While I’m pleased that we are still developing young talent (and hopefully not be sold on to a ’bigger’ club), I’m wondering what games the Guardian has seen where Rodwell has played. To quote them "A current Under-19 international often compared to Rio Ferdinand, he is strong, quick and assured". Maybe they’re referring to the second half Ferdinand performance a few weeks ago :0)

Richard Harris, Frankly, it is disgraceful to suggest that Rodwell is not performing. The fact neither he or Baxter bottled it in their time in the first team so far, speaks volumes for their professional attitude and at such a young age, they should be encouraged, not belittled.

If you expect Rodwell (or anyone else) to be the finished article at such a young age, you are kidding yourself.

Still, if you want to hound out this talent, please continue with this small-minded attitude.

Jack Rodwell oozes class for a 17 year old lad thrown into the premier league in a side struggling for form. I?d have thought that would be obvious to anyone with half an eye and half a brain, no wonder the Sun overlooked him!

I agree Michael. Rodwell is going to be a quality player. He is different to any other player we have brought through i can remember. He is very comfortable in possesion and his all round game look?s very promising. People seem to ignore the fact he is 17 years old. I have met him a couple of times and he is a lovely lad very down to earth and has his feet well and truly on the ground.

Does Moyes see him as a centre back though? I’m not so sure, his midfield performances have been very encouraging in centre midfield. I’m just wondering what is Baxter’s position as well?

Good spot Andy. There was a similar piece in The Independent today that also mentioned Baxter & Rodwell. They are clearly highly rated, and of course we also have Vaughney & Victor.

I guess it?s a pity that Moyes doesn?t espouse at least a little of the sporting ethic of Arsene Wenger. Where that the case, these guys might be able to express themselves in an environment and a style of play that allows them to enjoy their football. As it is, so much of what we do these days is thoroughly underwhelming.

It?s straying slightly from the point, but if you remember when we played ManU at Old Trafford in October 2002 you?ll see precisely what I mean. I watched this game on honeymoon in the south of France. For 88 minutes we more than matched Man Utd, not just in scoreline but in style and approach. Everything we did was on the floor and forward. We attacked them from the off and it was stirring stuff. Driving it all was Gravesen and Li Tie, but the whole team was brilliant and Rooney came on late as a sub and almost won it for us.

The fact that they got 3 goals in the last 2 minutes was horrible, but the way we played was fabulous & seemed like a marker from Moyes that we will go after a win anywhere. The end result may have been bad, but I don?t think I have ever seen Everton attack a team away from home so much, and certainly not one of the Sky 4. That philosophy clearly didn?t last long, but I don?t think I have ever been so impressed with a Moyes team, before or since.

Alan, I remember that game. As you say, 88 minutes of conviction that "this is it". They’d given everything, a late slip let United out of jail, and they reveled in the deflation that set in and got two more goals. Even in the immediate post-match interview, Sir Ferg was still shaking, and went out of his way to praise the way Everton had played.

Unfortunately, I think that game left DM with a few scars, and I don’t think we’ve gone after a Sky4 team like that since.

I was talking to one of my mates in work and was trying to recall a name of a young 'superstar' in the making.

This name, though, was one that was mentioned a good few times probably about 5 years ago... I know it was a long time ago but he was supposed to become one of the best players in the world.

My first challenge for everyone is 'Who was it'??? Second 'what happened to him'?? This not a trick question, it's more helping me out.

While we are at it as well, it would be good to hear some other names of the so-called rising superstars that never materialised over the past 10 years.

Here is one that I found which some of you may have already seen but, WOW, he looks brilliant

Of the Guardian journos top 20, Chelsk and the Ars were given 3 each, MUre 2, then six Prem and five non-Prem (with Leeds having 2 of them). Great to see our lads on the page, even if it is only paper talk.

No surprise to note the absence of our beloved neighbours - after all, they fielded more Spanish players than Atletico Madrid in their recent fixture.

I read an interview with Ray Hall back in August and he said the current youth players are the strongest group in his time at the club. So in 5 years time we might have a number of homegrown lads in the first team squad to rival Fergie?s Fledging?s how about the Moyes Boy?s.

Joanne, Lee McArdle I believe is still playing for the U18s and might even get the odd reserves game.

Looks like Hope Akpan has signed a full contract and I think that is now 4 youth this year that have signed on professionaly. This looks very promising for the future. There looks to be agood group coming through the U18s now so hopefully some of these players start to get a run in the next year or 2.
Maybe some guys on here can tell us of any who are slightly younger who we may not have seen as yet, say a 14- or 15-year-old who the club thinks will make it.

Wake up everyone! Remember Michael Ball, Richard Dunne, Danny Cadamateri, Nick Chadwick? Who are they now? Premiership Starters that can demand tens of millions GBP in the transfer market?

Let’s wait till they show up in our first team before jumping on the bandwagon. Baxter cannot even make the bench now, FGS!

re: above post

I see your point but M Ball probably would have been a very good player, but for injuries, and R Dunne has had a good career.

Another couple like that wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Well we did get £6mill for Ball, £3mill for Dunne, who are both still playing Premier League football. Then there is Jeffers, who I remember seeing in a Sunday TImes article back in 1998 about the stars for the 2006 World Cup. I think we got £8mill for him, it was reported as £10mill, but the rest we didn?t get as it was performance based.

Superkids, well I remember Cherno Samba, and our very own John Paul Kissock is still hanging in there. I remember Stephen Schumacher being touted as the next big thing some years ago too, I think he is at Crewe at the moment. Nick Chadwick is at Hereford after a spell at Plymouth. Danny Cadamarteri is at Huddersfield. So they?re all still making a living out of football at least.

Re Alan's comment about attacking football we used to play.

I remember when Moyes first came in and we were away at Sunderland, somebody got sent off and we were down to 10 men, Moyes put a striker on and we won the game 1-0 (Super Kev I think it was). After the game Moyes said that the best way to defend was to attack a team. I remember thinking "Crikey, this man's the business!"

Again, if I remember rightly we tried the same sort of thing against Newcastle away and got stuffed 4-0 or something like that, we then went to Arsenal and got beat 5 or 6. That was the end of Moyes's cavalier approach and a cue for the defensive shite to start, a la now. Sad times.

There's an under-14 named Chris Long who is attracting alot of interest. Has played up for the 15 and 16 age groups. A striker who manages to score even when not playing well very much in the Michael Owen mould (small and a preditor) but with much more ability than Owen.

To Jimmy Miilican , the player you mean who was highly rated 5 years ago could have been Freddie Adu - hes now 19 and not getting much playing time for AS Monaco.

great you tube clip - some player - but a bit on the small side for us !
