Arteta

To all the Arteta fans, can you not see the amount of times he gives the ball away, holds on too long, misses an opportunity for a pass or shot, runs into trouble, fails to send in a decent cross from a dead ball, takes a poor free kick, or passes to other players who are marked? What ever excuses you may have for this passenger (I happen to think it's a question of ability) the fact remains that he shouldn't be on the pitch.
We can't afford to carry players who are not only not contributing but are a liability.
If Moyes had any bottle he would drop him (sell him altogether would be nice), but we all know he won't.
Leighton Baines could fill the void as someone who can cross a ball as well as defend, tackle and get down the flank.
Alas, if he can't get in the team now, he never will.

He isn't playing anywhere near his best, I agree, but he still sets up at least half our goals (including today) and laid on a few other excellent chances ? dropping him would be a big mistake, we simply need to find a way of getting the best out of him
Tonight was the first time I’ve ever noticed the distinct similarity between David Moyes and Hugh Laurie. Watching an episode of Jeeves and Wooster, I could have sworn it was the man himself. Has anyone ever seen him and Laurie in the same room together?
January transfer window screams out for reinforcements for the wings...
Alongside him int he absence of any wide pace(this has got to be our number one transfer priority) I’d have Fellaini Osman and Pienaar(for whatever reason he seems to be out of the reckoning).
This would leave no place for Cahill, which of course is a risk because of his scoring ability.I believe, though, that he works best in a 4-5-1,system which seems condusive this season to hoofball.
Finally, how about another option for free kicks. Some one like Alan Stubbs who could blast the odd free kick under or through the wall.
I reckon we could do a swap deal for jauqin
Today he hasnt put himself enough but his set pieces were very dangerous - Yak scored and Cahill and Yobo missed great chances, what more can you ask for - 3 golden match-winning opportunities from set pieces all from Arteta.
Really some peoples are so deluded its frightening
Everton are crying out for some natural wide players on both the left and the right of midfield. That's one of the biggest reasons why we are struggling to break teams down at home.
Today we saw lots of possession, lots of neat and tidy passing, but nothing to get in behind Boro. We lack an Aaron Lennon type player if you like, or even Stewart Downing. I know this guy has his detractors but give him credit, at least he would fit a round hole with a round peg if he signed for Everton. By buying a left winger you are then going to play him on the left wing and the same has to be said of the right side...Arteta and Osman stuck out there is painful. They are both restricted in their influence on the game and you cannot blame either man.
You could say blame Moyes as he has had long enough surely to rectify this problem. Maybe he tried to do it during the summer before the Obinna deal fell through, he is apparently a flying winger. We just need to sign one or two players in January who will play out wide, stay out wide and most importantly feel comfortable out there. Even a fool could see that Arteta and Osman are not comfortable in those roles...
Pienaar??? Well he is what I would call a different kind of wide man. What I mean by that is he is comfortable on the ball and has bundles of technique but he is not the type who is going to be running at a full back with the ball and getting to the byline. That said, I do think he is at the moment out best bet for a wide player.
Our play is just so so narrow, when you watch it sometimes it's almost like a school playground or under-10s match, everyone just huddles into the center circle and the rest of the pitch is bare... We need to address this problem fast because I can see it holding us back this season ? especially at Goodison where the impetus should be with us and the onus is on us to break down defensive minded teams coming for a draw.
Why is Castillo overlooked? We have the strikers and a competent back line but the midfield are all attack-minded and just don?t retreat quick enough and that is why our home record is so poor.
Though smaller and lighter than our three much vaunted ball playing experts he made several gut busting powerful 80-yd sprints that culminated in fierce shots at our goal. One of them from the edge of the box and hammered with deadly accuracy produced Boro?s goal. In his defensive role O?Neil proved to be far stronger and more effective than our three weaklings.
A challenge to devotees of Os, Ar, Pi: When has one of them ever made a flat-out 80-yd sprint to meet a cross field ball, let alone produce a shot with the kind of power and accuracy shown by O?Neil?
Sadly for us, David Moyes showed once again that he does not have the insight to know when the flow of a game demands a change of players or tactics. Anichebe and Vaughan should have replaced Osman and Arteta at least 30 minutes sooner.
I only critisise our flair players when they don?t come looking for the ball and hide. I critisised Arteta against the likes of Portsmouth and Newcastle where he blatently didn?t want to get involved. Today that wasn?t the case, he tried to make things happen and he never hid.
He isn?t doing well at the moment but you could say that about a lot of our players. Cahill, Osman, Yakubu, Lescott etc all spring to mind.
What I will say is when Arteta moved into the middle we started to control the game and had a lot more possession. I think he should have a run of games in the middle to be honest.
Though we do need natural wingers, as our only natural one is Shandy, who will never get a game for us again. I heard we?re after a left winger called Elia from FC Twente, get him!! I swear, if Obinna got a work permit, it might well be a different story with how we?re playing this season.
so much bitchin its unreal
’’id have peanuts in the middle with screech ’’
’’id have cahill with no screech and yak n saha’’
’’na osmans better than peanuts ’’
no he isnt , yes he is , no he isnt yes he is , no he isnt , yes his is * limp wrists *
shut up ?
moyes = young manager
everton = imbalanced squad
everton = finding wether to play 4-4-2 or 4-5-1
everton = miles better then we were 5 years ago (dont forget that now will ya’s? bunch of over expectant , impatient people)
everton = a team on the up yet people go missin at goodison because we arnt winnin as much this year (or as convincingly rather)
everton = silent crowds and ’’if ya know ya history’’ merchants when neville crunches ronaldo
everton = the club i love
however...
everton =supporters... are doin my head right in...
no wonder were gettin 31k in goodison park nowadays..
we dont wanna sit with you moanin people who only sing when were winnin and think ya know better than the brightest young manager in the country , if not europe...
next time , spend ya time about moanin about the british government , i might join ya , but leave our manager and players alone , unless ya wanna take ya boots at the weekend and think you can do better?
im 23 years old , and can see the WHOLE picture about everton at the mo and how it might not work for us this season but may the season after this or after next...
what i dont understand is people twice my age not seein that at all??
maybe i didnt get to see the great sides of the 80’s
but then maybe thts my point? dont be over expectant and think about today not the past...
Our movement is virtually non-existent.
As for that performance yesterday, what did we expect? we had a center half at full back, one of the best attacking goalscoring midfielders in the league in a defensive midfield position, a center midfielder on the wing, our only natural winger on the bench, our striker sub is now a winger and our record signing who claimed he was a holding midfielder is now our attacking midfielder... he is accommodating players by playing them out of position; get some fucking balls.
Our team is crying for real widemen to make our game less predictable. Yesterday Boro had a very solid central backline and we pushed everything into the middle.
This lack of pure wingers make us an easier team to meet. I?m not saying we should play only pure wingers, but to actually have the option would make us that much better.
I?m being stupid of course. But then again you started it Andy!
Arteta is certainly not playing to his best at the moment but he has undoubted class. Form is temporary, class is permanent.
Having said that, I thought he was poor yesterday. Initially I blamed Lescott for their goal, but on MOTD, I spotted how slowly Arteta was trotting back & leaving Lescott exposed. I’d have preferred to see Pienaar on the left & Arteta on the right at the expense of Osman, in hindsight. Lescott seems to play much better when Pienaar is in front of him.
Understand.
Which raises the question: WTF did he sign them?
Arteta is someone with genuine class and ability, but his deliveries from set-pieces are not consistent enough. For every 10 deliveries he will hit one perfect one and 9 terrible ones. His ratio from direct set-pieces is much better and I am not sure that he is the best man to take corners any more. The only hesitation is ? who else can take them?
At the moment I believe we have 2 or 3 players that are off-form and need to be dropped (even though they are among our best players). For me, Saha is outstanding at the moment and Vaughan has looked dangerous when he?s been on, so I would start with those two up top, a midfield of Pienaar, Fellaini, Osman, Arteta and a back four of Neville, Yobo, Jagielka and Baines.
Everton = team stalling + not building on previous season.
Everton board = bunch of liars who’ve misled fans and created total apathy amongst the fans.
Everton fans = totally disillusioned with the direction our club is being taken.

Since the days of Kanchelskis frightening the bollocks out of teams with his outrageous ability, we have sadly been stuck with players like Kevin Kilbane, Simon Davies, Mark Pembridge and even the likes of Steve Watson (great pro but no right winger) playing on the wide areas of midfield. It has really been a bad position for too long with Everton. We have always persevered with playing square pegs in round wholes and we are still doing it now...
Nearly every club in the Premier League knows the importance of having some width. Liverpool knew they had to get some width that could consistently do a job so they went out and got Albert Riera who to be fair at the time when we were linked to him I thought "no thanks" but after seeing him play I am regretful that he chose them. He looks like he would have done us fine ? that is if Moyes hadn't turned him into a left back, just like he did when he ended up playing Simon Davies right back...
Maybe it is the managers choice who knows?? Perhaps we will never truly see a return to all out attacking exciting football where we have six or seven players bursting forward all at once in a straight line accross the width of the pitch like you watch at Arsenal or Man Utd...
If we do go past January without improving those positions dramatically, can we really keep on playing the same square pegs we have done up to now? I think despite our league position we are still looking like a team low on ideas and the big test will really show if we have what it takes after the Wigan game.. We have a trip to Tottenham followed by Aston Villa at Goodison then away to Man City before Chelsea visit us before Christmas.
He needs to be dropped for his own and the team's development, what about James Vaughan out wide?
I am beginning to think that Mikel is a bit of a diver.
I despair for my fellow blues!
On another point, Cahill is simply not good enough in a 4-man midfield. He is an impact player at best. I know he scores goals, but we need someone who can pass and tackle in the middle.
Perhaps Arteta thinks the same way!! "I?ll try to get the ball through the first defender rather than over his head". Only a world class player would try the more difficult option of hitting a ball hard enough so it goes straight through the defender.....
I thought Arteta was pretty good and I think he controlled the game quite well....
But does anybody else notice what I noticed since the Man Utd game?? Neville has been playing really well with his passes and crosses.... and he doesn?t hoof it anymore... Well done, Phil.
How about having a go at those players who get picked week-in, week-out and who are consistently crap.
Starting with Osman and Cahill.
Mikel doesn’t look interested anymore. He is living on past performances.
There?ve been a few games when he has dominated but sadly they?re few & far between. I remember the Fulham game (Beattie 2 & McFadden) when Mikel ran their left-back ragged. Fiorentina at home and a few others.
Don?t get me wrong ? I?m a fan of Mikel Arteta and when he?s on top of his game, he?s a joy to watch. I just wish we could see it more often.
Moyes tries to accommodate his favourites instead of adressing the issue we have now had for 5 years ? a lack of wingers. There are plenty out there. Did you see Adam Johnston yesterday when he came on for Boro??
I actually believe we played well yesterday but once again relied heavily on the outstanding Jags ? my player of the season so far. Lescott and the Yak in my opinion should be dropped and Baines and Vaughan should be given a chance. Fellaini also had his best game in a blue shirt.
Leave Arteta alone. Be careful what you wish for ? he would destroy us if he played for someone else.
Picking up a little on Adam Fitzsimmon's post, I found myself swearing and shaking my head at some of my fellow Lower Gwlady inhabitants, booing the team at half time and full time, excuse the French but what a gang of dickheads they are. Sky Fans every last one of them.
It is a bit of a quandary, as we probably played the best "football" we have in a few months but still did not win, which in itself is worrying, Boro had a good side and they played us well.
Decent point but should/could have been more if we were sharper and Cahill gets his head back.
Arteta has been very poor for about 18mths now... last season it was blamed on a niggling injury which we all accepted (whether we believed it or not!!)... so what?s his excuse this year ??
On his day, Arterta is a fine footballer and for the best part of 3 seasons (when he felt he had something to prove having just come out of Real Sociadad rezzies) he was tremendous. Now I think he may be suffering with a little bit of what I call 'superstaritis'... you all know what I mean!! ? acting like a spoilt little brat when things aren?t going his way... blaming it all on everyone else rather than himself.
If he wants to know why he isn't part of the full Spanish squad, tell him to take a look at his performances over the last 18 months... the answer is obvious.
I think he needs to buckle down and start producing quality performances for Everton because if he thinks he can leave and walk in to one of the top European side (British or otherwise) he & his agent are kidding themselves....he?s good but NOT THAT GOOD !!
There?s no doubt Arteta?s form has been poor. he?ll be back, I?m sure, and I wouldn?t want to leave him out for too long, but maybe we do need to mix it up a bit more and try something different. If that means giving Arteta a shake up and a stint on the bench, then so be it. You have to remember that Arteta is our skillful playmaker, maybe we rely on him too much, but at the moment he?s falling way short of what we need from him and it needs sorting.
I repeat these things because they happen regularly.
The bottom line is if he gets dropped to the bench then the dummy will be thrown from the pram and he?ll be off. There is just no competition for his place in the team and he is therefore under no pressure to compete for his place, it's a bit of a Catch-22. In his defence, who in their right mind would put Osman in the team ahead of Arteta? It's time for Leon to beef up or move on, his contribution yesterday was as usual non-existent.
Also can I just come to the defence of Cahill? He's been unfairly criticised by a couple of people on here. I thought he did a good a good job yesterday, we know he is better employed in the attacking midfield role but he was asked to play in the middle and got around the pitch well, tackling and was looking to get hold of the ball and get things moving.
Finally we are desperate for a decent winger, pity we didn't try and get Millner when Newcastle didn't want him. I think Baines could do a job ahead of Lescott with Arteta in the middle but I think Moyes will have him out the door in January.
I don't know if anyone else agrees but yesterday I thought he came to life when he moved infield and was able to link up with Pienaar, Fellaini and the forwards. Pienaar seemed to get the quick, one-touch passing going when he came on and Arteta soon joined in. The only trouble was it was in the last 15 minutes of the game so there wasnt enough time to have a greater influence or make people notice.
Maybe a change of position is the answer, it would deffinately get him more involved and closer to our more talented players (Pienaar and Fellaini). One things for sure somethinks got to give because his poor form cant go on.
A classic.
Cahill gave the ball away regularly...whether you seen it or not.
He was better than in the two previous matches... but he and Osman are the weak positions in midfield.
People go on about Arteta, but he is obviously limited by the footballing nous of those around him...
To suggest that he should be sold is ridiculous !
Got that far, knew Arteta had the best pass completion % of any of our players yesterday (& bar Castillo all season), ignored the rest...
...jog on...
What this illustrates is how imbalanced the squad is - Felliani is a really bad buy - unless Cahill is on his way in Jan because no matter how hard you try if you move Arteta inside you have a gaping hole on a wing and you cannot play Peanut, Ossie and MA in the same side without a Carsley.
So why not try Lescott in the holding role, he’s not a full back and Joey and Jags should not be split up at the moment. Lescott showed good ball control yeaterday his distribution wasn’t bad but he did get caught for pace on a few occasions - so play him where pace isn’t so much of an issue.
What have we got to loose!
Undoubdtedly gifted as he is, I think he would benefit from a spell on the bench. Seriously, I’d hate to see him leave but no player is above being dropped if he’s not playing well.
I had some sympathy with him last season if, as was stated, he had a nagging injury (even though that excuse didn’t sit squarely with his insistence on taking all free kicks and corners). The fact is that he’s been below par for too long now.
I’m sure a kick up the arse would do him the power of good - and if he does spit his dummy out - then he’s not the player we want anyway. But I’m sure it wouldn’t come to that.
I like Pienaar?s bravery, he will always accept responsibility... What a pity DM doesnt' think there?s a starting place for him.
You are spot on about our movement on and off the ball, we are a very static side and especially in midfield.
Which is why I always wanted Fernandes to be honest. The lad wasn’t the finished article but he wasn’t scared of the ball and he was always dropping into deeper positions to collect and distribute it.
We don’t really have that in this side, someone who’s going to come looking and take the ball under pressure.
I think Arteta could do a job in the middle but I doubt we’ll see it, we don’t have anyone to replace him outwide.
Also on Pienaar, I don’t think Moyes dropped him mate. I’m not sure he was fit enough to play 90 minutes. If he was fully fit he would without doubt start. He’s vital to this side.
So even though he is not on top of his game, where would we be without him, and who would replace him. No-one should be guaranteed a place in the 11 unless performing well but statistically he?s still producing the goods.
Yesterday our movement was poor, particularly up front, our midfield was unbalanced and very narrow closing our own space and options. Boro particularly in the 1st half moved the ball very well and at pace when they attacked, Tuncay always seemed to find space with his movement, which was aided by the fact that they kept two wide men who stretched us creating that space for them to attack us. Playing as we did we were always in front of their two banks of four making it easy for them to defend.
Did anyone else notice our reluctance to shoot around the edge of the box when the chance was there, choosing to pass instead?
You have a serious problem. You simply cannot pass comment on any topic without parading your usual mindless nonsense via your ?heroic? attacks on those who even dare to disagree with your views (?Ahh, it wouldn?t be a thread if we didn?t have Ciaran having a go at Cahill? and (to Andy Hegan) ?Are you Marsh in disguise? I see he has disappeared since we have been unbeaten in 5?).
You remind me of the bully boy in the school yard who runs around (usually accompanied by a gang) telling everyone who?ll listen that ?mine?s bigger than yours?. For God?s sake, Tony, wake up and realise that people are entitled to their view without being subject to your usual nonsensical, and apparently compulsory personal attacks.
Ciarán McGlone don?t get sucked in by this acid tongued fool ? remember, anyone who disagrees with him becomes a subject of one of his ?heroic? muggings. You only have to disagree and you?re a ?pratt? or some such other inventive term he comes up with. And I think this tells us more about him and his personal failings than anything or anyone else.
As for your post Andy Hegan, whilst I don?t agree with much of it, it was a useful alternative to put up for discussion.
Vic doesn't possess the silky skills normally associated with a wide player but he has genuine power and is impossible to knock off the ball. He also presents a massive obstacle to any full back wanting to push into our half.
At West Ham, he went on a couple of "get you out of your seat" runs only to choose the wrong final option; maybe he always will. But I believe this is worth persevering with as it will free up our more gifted players to play in the middle.
And before this is dismissed out of hand, I would ask you to check the results of the mentioned games. Also check for goal scorers and assists.
A whole lot of matches... that?s what !!
I ask you.... play Lescott in the holding role indeed... the mind boggles!!
I know, why not go the whole hog and play him up front ?? ? after all he did score 10 goals last season!!
Steve Ashton.... stick to FM on yer computer mate!!
Not to worry, I won?t lose sleep over it.
Seemingly though everyone can have an opinion...ermm..except me it seems according to Laurie.
The most ironic thing is that your post "Tony, wake up and realise that people are entitled to their view without being subject to your usual nonsensical, and apparently compulsory personal attacks" is doing exactly what you suggest I shouldn’t do.
I find it flattering though that you have dedicated your time and energy typing a post just about me and it would suggest "this tells us more about you and your personal failings than anything or anyone else" ;-)
Last point, I have never and will never use the word Pratt and I try and avoid swear words also.
Toodles
We havn't progressed from last season no or at least that's what I predict, who knows we could finish 5th again and sign in January...
Have we progressed in last 5 or 6 years? Most definitely... unless you fancy scrapping to stay in the league again year after year...
The Board have lied to us year after year, whats new? The government lies to us year after year, what's new?
Doesn't mean the atmosphere at Goodison could be a little better? After all, if ya?s wanna be quiet then don't expect miracles from the team every match... whereas if we fire 'em up, we can beat anyone at goodison on our day...

Are you Marsh in disguise? I see he has disappeared since we have been unbeaten in 5.
