Save Our Liver Birds

Comments (30)

Liverpool FC have caused a storm by applying to register their city's iconic Liver bird as a trademark. (The Guardian)

Wasn't the Liver Birds first used as an emblem by Everton on commemorative medals? And isn't it used by the City Council on their letterheads? And made famous nationwide by Nerys Hughes and Polly James? How then can they even contemplate granting a trademark for the red Shite?

God, what will those bastards do next? We have got to try and stop this. Why should they be allowed to adopt the Liver Bird as their trademark when it is a symbol of Liverpool THE CITY not a football club. This Liver Bird objects most strongly. Can anyone get a petition up?

As I understand it, Liverpool City Council have slammed it and won't let it happen.
Nice to see they don't get their own way all the time!

They are not trying to trademark the liver bird or all images of liver birds...

They are trying to trademark the ’version’ of the liver bird on their crest to prevent counterfeit goods being produced with their official badge without their approval....

There is a difference.

But isn?t a Liver Bird a Liver Bird? I mean how many versions / species of a Liver Bird is there?

When I was in ?pool I was told there?s only ONE type of Liver Bird... the one being used by Liverpool City and the same one being adopted by Liverpool FC as part of their club crest.

Everton 1886 played as a Lancashire XI in a white strip, bearing the red rose, and yes, the Liver Bird. It can be seen on the TOFFS website.....

Why are we all getting worked up about this? We could always trademark the KIrkby Kestrel or the Kirkby Kittyhawk?

That was an ironic joke by the way. I’m dead against anything that weakens our association with the City. I’d put the Liver Bird on our shirt if it was up to me. We need a bit of branding by association.

Damian Scott (weren’t you on BGT??) is correct. It is just their "version" of the image which they want to TM.

Jalil - Im pretty sure the "Liver Bird" is a mythical creature, its origins are debatable, though I think one can safely assume no species of "Liver Bird" has ever existed. I stand to be corrected mind...

This episode just underlines the theft of the name of the city, and its most recognisable icon by the shyte. It would be simpler if they just took the name Redshyte and changed the crest to their version of a bucket of shit. Minus the bucket of course.

Joeynkoo - Re: you note that it ’just underlines the theft of the city’ - Didnt that shower once want to be registered as ’Everton City’ after the breakaway in 1892 which the FA at the time refuted? Your spot on with the claim of ’theft’. That’s them shower all over!!! I want, I want, I want.... Horrible, horrible, things that they are!

Graham Nixon- you’re right, but it was Everton Athletic they tried to call themselves. The FA/ football league wouldn’t allow it as it would be confusing, and said they’d basically be trying to trade on an association with the existing club.

The Liver bird, named after the bird(s) in the original Lyvre poole is actually nothing more than a common or garden Cormorant.

There are 2 Cormorants on the Liver buildings, one ( even tho’ they are the same colour ) is a Blue and the other is a red, you can tell this coz they refuse to acknowledge each other and stand back to back.

If they do get their way, as the always seem to do, and copyright the one on their badge, we can just copyright the other one... Cormorant azure rampant sinister or dexter depending which one the steal, sorted

Derek - thats a pretty original story. had a good laugh. but it might be true cos they can’t face each other or the city will be doom (if i got the legend right)... maybe that’s why we can never have a ground share or EFC tyring to move to Kirkby (to avoid disaster or bad fengshui)

That was a tongue in cheek of cost. no offence to the KEIOC supporters.

Derek you say the Liver bird is a Cormorant. Well as a keen bird watcher it certainly looks likes one so I have some good news. At present Cormorant populations are increasing to the detriment of other fish eating birds, ie, Little and Great Crested Grebes, Merganser and Goosanders. The government along with other environmental organisations are looking at ways of culling the Cormorants to keep the numbers down. Hopefully within the next 6 months anytime you see a cormorant it will be within your rights to shoot the bastard. Cornwall and Norway are the worse affected areas so we could arrange field trips.

When King John granted Liverpool its Royal charter in 1207 his emblem was an eagle. The seals were lost during the English Civil War when Liverpool Castle was attacked and changed hands several times. The present Liver bird should be an eagle, but from that time has been depicted as a cormorant.

Everton were always identified as a Liverpool club by the use of the Liver bird emblem until 1938 when the tower was adopted as our badge. We still have every right to use the Liver bird as well as our own famous symbol but choose not to do so.

In the same vein we should have the club offices in a prominent position in the city centre, and a club shop in Liverpool One stating that Paul McCartney supports Everton, buy your mementoes here all you thousands of Beatles fans.... But what do I know?

Damian - Britains Got Talent - there was a chap called Damon Scott on it once, I thought it was Damian - nothing meant by it!

Mike - I always have cared, ever since I first thought as a little kid that it was bad to like the Liver building, or use the word Liverpool because of their associations with the shyte.

Derek, they are only based on Cormorants, but they are mythical creatures.

LCC SHOULD trademark it (it IS the symbol of the city first and foremost).

LCC should then, season-by-season, allow the lovables to use it on their horrible stinky nylony cheap-looking shirts for let’s say...a million a season.

However a special deal is offered to them - 75 years worth of bird use for £50 mill.

They (snigger) thinking they’re saving £25 mill go for the deal.

The £50 mill is then paid to Sir Tezlington of Belle Vale to take his piss-poor, two-bob ground and fuck off.

Being a shrewd business sort, he literally pulls Warren Bradley’s arm off.

This leaves Bill all at sea and Kirkby as dead as...as dead as...well, as dead as it would be five years after it was built...if it was built like.

Everyone’s a winner!

Oh and in the really tiny teeny small-print, there’s a clause that says "All or part of any liver bird design, can only be used as part of a badge that also carries the line ’Kopites are gobshites’"
