England tonight

Comments (15)

I was not really bothered about the game tonight, booking the tickets for Wigan was a miles higher priority, and excellent service from the club on that account.

But I could not help but notice a few players aside from the "gallacticos" who may well add to our team/squad and wondered what others felt about them. Downing gave left-hand width, Johnson at right back looked solid and very fast and, Upson looked strong and confident at Centre back. These seem to me to be areas we have to address quickly and, without being FM, they would all be making a career move upwards, so, what do you think?

Of course, finance is an issue but we have players who could be given up to facilitate any moves and, again I wonder how people feel in this respect.

I’ll second that Michael. Downing, Johnson and Upson? I’ll agree we need a good winger, but its not Downing.

Plus we have signed a right back in the summer. Even though I have never seen him play I don’t think the club need 4 RBs on the books.

I think you were in "The Wilmslow" not in Wilmslow if you rate any of those 3 better than what we?ve got.

That lad, John Terry if I heard it correctly, played quite reasonable as well. I reckon Chelsea will sell him on the cheap, who the hell are Chelsea anyways? He would make a good bench warmer.

Upson is not better than what we already have, I admit that, but I can see why the point of wanting Downing and also Glen Johnson...

It's not a case of Downing not being better than what we have, the simple fact is we don't have his type of player and that's why we are so easy to play against at home. We don't have genuine wide men and some of the bull I have heard mentioned, drop Arteta and play Baines left midfield?? Yeah right. Play yet another defender at home...

Another one people seem obssessed with is playing Vaughan on right midfield. No technique... Does ok when he comes on late in a game and bullies defenders a bit... but on right midfield?? Come on, be real. We don't want any more square pegs in round holes. We have done that too many times under Moyes. Lets get some genuine quality out wide. Glen Johnson will be the answer for right back when Neville is close to packing up... Good coming forward and good defending.

I watched it, but couldnt give a dam. It just so happened to be of slightly more interest than the other bilge on my box.

Thought it was funny when Terry and... what?s the goaly?s name messed up. Was reading teletext when Terry scored, didn?t even think to turn it off and see what was going on... shame, I used to love England but my support just ebbed away ever since El Tel took charge and Sven being foreign just finnished any interest.

Think you?re all being a bit harsh on Ian.

I don?t rate Upson or Johnson, but Downings a quality player who seems to be improving each season. He impressed me last week at Goodison and for the first time in an England shirt, played very confidently last night.

Our squad currently has only two decent "wide" players, Arteta and Pienaar. When one gets injured we have to rely on Osman to play out wide (which usually means a reshuffle in the middle), when he has no pace and clearly can?t play well there.

Add to that the fact that neither Pienaar or Arteta are left-footed and signing someone like Downing not only gives us extra options, but balance.

Reality is though we probably can?t afford him!

Watching England last night showed the benefits of playing with pace up front and out wide, and having a team that is well balanced. They did the simply stuff well and were by far the better team.

it was an enjoyable to watch, unlike a lot of our games.

Pace and balance anyone?

I can?t think of who we could sell to raise enough money to buy what is required. The transfer window will most likely come and go without any participation from Everton. I also believe that Fellaini will be our record transfer for a very long time.

Pace, width and a bit of steel in midfield will cost more than we have.

Thanks, Jay, for your support... assume your comments were a joke, "The Wilmslow" where is that ?

John, cheers well read and replied, assume that you can construct a point or two but in the meantime...

Paul, appreciate your point, Arteta does not look like a winger to me, and many on here think he cuts it in Central Midfield. Off subject, but I wonder when as he seems to disappear too much for me, appreciating that when he hits highs there is no body better,

Erik, well done.

Gary, not sure anymore, never been in a position to tell the manager where I want to play.

Michael, cheers great site and a pleasure and privelidge to get involved ? keep up the good, no, great work.

I wouldn?t mind seeing Downing sign for Everton tbh, not sure why some of you guys hardly rate him ? especially as it is a weak position for us on the flanks.

Upson and Johnson had good games v Germany and are obviously considered by the maestro Capello as better choices than we have playing (Lescott, Jags, Neville, Hibbert etc) so not a bad point Ian.

The wings and the defensive midfield position is what we need to be addressing in January as a priority I feel. Think Castillo should be given more of a chance sometime as well....

"was not really bothered about the game tonight"

Another patriotic englishman! You guys really need to calm down...

You?re losing your culture quicker than saying the word ?bye?. Show more pride! You would never hear a Welshman, Irishman or Scotsman making that kind of remark. I for one would NEVER put Everton above Wales even though I?d want Everton to beat the Welsh clubs every time.
