Give him a go

Am I alone in thinking Lescott has the attributes of a striker? He is tall, strong and a very good header. In possession of the ball he is confident and and displays a striker's instinct around the box.

Hibbert is back to fitness while Baines is chomping at the bit plus Valente in the background... we have good cover at fullback. It is up front where we are short and Joleon could be the answer...

Yes!..... just change your name to Billy (underarmbowler) Nomates.

Horses for courses Dick, square pegs in square holes. We, well most of us, are quick enough to have a go at Moyes for putting say, Neville in MF.... and why pray tell is that?? Because thats not his position.

You can play people out of position in the short term, when the team has the class both in form and personnel to ? carry ? them and they sometimes do a very good job. I seem to remember Harper scoring a very good goal as a sub, but nobody came in to snap him up as the answer to their goalscoring problems. Similarly Pat van der Hauwe, popped up in the inside forward position to do the same.

Some of this has already buggered up Lescott. He is a CENTRE HALF, he was on form as LB last season and looked good, he was OFF form this season and because he didn?t have the basic instincts and nouse of fullbackery learned over the years is now getting caught out of position time and time again.

It can be done and has been, Ian Marshall for one. Roy McFarland started off as an amateur for Mount in the 60s scored a bag full of goals.

We tried it with John Hurst, he was a junior CF, it was embarrassing to watch. Only Jimmy Gabriel could do it but he didn?t make a habit of it. Put Hurst in his best position, at the back and he managed to score some now and then. Sandy Brown was tried up front, abject failure, he even missed a penalty, hit the post and put in the rebound, the ref quite rightly said no goal. Mind you the only goal he did score was a cracker. 39 years last week ? was it really that long ago? Seems like only yesterday.

Yes, I?ll see your Fred Pickering, fullback to CF and raise you a Malcolm McDonald.

Dave Watson scored goals early in his career. So did Mountfield.

But John Charles they ain?t.

And neither is Lescott.

I?d sooner see Lukas or Baxter or both given a go as they are both strikers. I think it would demoralise the younger players to see a CB playing as a lone striker.

I have a feeling it will be Victor up front with big Marouane and Tim Cahill providing the support from deep.

Steve Watson anybody? But in answer to the Lescott question - no. He’ll get more goals playing where he is than if he played up front permanently.

He isn't mobile enough and his weakness of not being able to turn quickly would be a major problem.

Have you noticed how he tries to push people out wide and then uses his strength to out-muscle them? He gets caught out when people go inside him (Wigan), and he also looses out when a good ball just eludes him and he doesn?t shift his body position or turn quickly enough to deal with it (Blackburn).

Fred Pickering was my favourite player! Great pity injury ended his career at Everton. I would put one of the youngster in against City but with Moyes that won't happen.

What if big Vic is ruled out today? I see Saha is still not ready so what do we do? I would like to see the following :-

Howard
Neville
Yobo
Jagielka
Lescott
Osman
Arteta
Fellaini
Pienaar
Van der Meyde
Cahill (CF)

If this doesn?t work out pull off VDM who probably wouldn?t last the full match anyway and stick on Baxter/Lucas/Agard.

Any other ideas???

While I do like Joleon, he most of the time has the touch of an elephant.

Play him in his natural position, that?s where he belongs.

Remeber Chris Sutton starting off as a centre half at Norwich ,can,t be any worse than Victor never make a prem player as long has he,s got a hole in is arse.

I think Scott has made the most sensible post here. He’ll (Moyes) probably start with Cahill up front if Vic is not fit. When we’re a goal down with 10 mins to go, he’ll throw Joleon up front along with him.

Baxter deserves a chance. He showed enough in the couple of chances he got in preseason and the first couple of games. He is only 16 and will learn quick and make him an even better prospect for the future.

I get the feeling Moyes is shielding Baxter as doesn’t want another Rooney repeat.

Just to recap, Harry Catterick bought Big Fred PIckering from Blackburn, changed him from a full back to the old fashioned center forward. Oh i forgot, can we compare Harry to Davie? Biggest mystery to me why Fred was dropped from the 66 cup winning team. (he was NOT injured)

Its not a bad idea, If we were desperate I suppose he wouldn’t be a bad striker. By the way didn’t our opposition use David James up front in the past?

I suspect Moyes thinks that playing Jutkiewicz for 90 minutes as a lone striker wouldn’t be the ideal introduction to Premiership football. If we’re one down after 65 minutes, surely Moyes will throw him on.

Terry Draper, just to recap your recap, IF you know your ’Istory you would know that Big Fred was converted to CF at BBurn. They came to Goodison early in the 63-64 season and played us and sometimes the ball off the park. This was the 1st time in ages we had lost at ’ Fortress Goodison ’ after going all the Championship season undefeated. We were not the team of that season poor form and injuries, added to that we were to lose Tony Kay as well. We did well to finish as high as we did behind the RS.
