Going Forward

With the likely absence of James Vaughan for the rest of the season and Yak's absence likewise together with Saha's consistent injury worries and Anichebe seemingly about to join the physio's club I wondered who the hell we could get on loan or otherwise in January:-

Michael Owen: Expensive, would need a fee, injury prone too.

Henrik Larson: Maybe just beyond the prem standards, does'nt seem that keen and apparently no contact has been made

Jo: I think we saw enough on Saturday. At best would need a long settling in period.

David Nugent: Apparently wants to stay at Pompey.

Marlon Harewood: A strong rumour that he's already been lined up.Athletic but questionable finishing.

Emile Heskey: Also athletic but questionable finishing and would cost a fee.

Didier Drogba: If only!!!!

Santi Ezquerro (Barcelona): Apparently good until he joined Barca but cant get a game now but is old? at 31.

Lukas Podolski and Wagner Love might as well be Drogba for the fee involved.

Marcus Bent: Only joking!!

So it looks like Marlon Harewood unless we can "Pull a rabbit out of the hat".

I'm struggling hard to suppress a very very long yaaaawwwnnn...

Did we really learn so little from the summer of madness? Linked to all and sundry week after week: buy a player or three, on Deadline Day, of whom hardly anyone has heard??? And yet here we are again with more of the FM/Pro Evo transfer madness.

Get a grip, people. Instead of going down this provenly moribund path each time, convince yourselves we'll sign no-one. Then just imagine the pleasurable surprise when we do!!!

Surely we?re forgetting Victor Obinna. We actually did agree a deal for him last year and would have him bar a work permit problem, which may not be a problem this time round. He?s a young player with immense ability who would fit in with the other Nigerian contingent, will gain experience in one of the best leagues in the world, and first team experience at a great team which will be beneficial for Inter, who already have about 10 strikers and can?t give them all games. Also Mourinho and Moyes aren?t unfriendly with each other and we only need a short term replacement anyway.

From what DM has said, we don't have much £ to spend in January, but we simply have to go out and get someone. So the likely scenario is that we will sign someone on loan. So realistically it?ll have to be someone who?s not getting much of a game at the moment, who?s got Premier League experience, and whose wages wouldn?t be prohibitive. So who is there?

No-one really springs to mind with the top four, other than possibly Manucho at Man U, but he?s not played in the Premier League as far as I know. Darren Bent is now playing and scoring regularly for Spurs. I don't like the look of Jo. Bojinov is coming back from injury for City, so they may be willing to let him out on loan, but again he?s unproven in the Premier League and is clearly injury prone. Harewood has great pace but is a Championship player IMO. I was suprised when Villa signed him frankly.

The further down the league we get, the more we?re scraping the barrel. There?s Viduka at Newcastle, great in his day, but well past it and on high wages. Nugent is staying at Pompey, as he should, to at least try and prove himself. So who else?

Dean Windass? If we had any £ to spend I?d like us to go for Kenwyne Jones of Sunderland. He?s big, powerful, good in the air and on the ground, works hard and scores goals. Even without our injury crises I?d like to see him at Everton, but I doubt we can afford him.

So we?ll either have to look abroad for a foreign mercenary, or to the lower leagues for an up-and-comer. Or worst of all, sign no-one, and limp through to the end of the season with only a couple of strikers fit at any time, and midfielders and centre backs playing up front. If we do sign someone, I just hope it's done in a timely and efficient manner, rather than the usual last minute kick bollock scramble. But then again, this is Everton we?re talking about...

What;s with the joke about Marcus Bent? Why do people seem to forget that he was the forward that helped finish above the shite and finish 4th? He doesn't get enough credit for me. I would gladly have him back, he's quick, strong, decent in the air, holds up the ball well and works hard for the team.

Maybe 1 of the kids will be given a chance to shine.

Ian,

Marcus Bent gets a laugh as whilst he did always work hard he was, to be quite frank, shit. He had pace, and you?re right he could hold the ball up but in and around the box (clearly a fairly important area for a striker), he seemed only capable of either scuffing or twatting the ball hopelessly in some kind of half shot half cross. Baring in mind we didn?t create that many chances (not that we?re Brazil now), he would squander any gilt edged chances that came to him.

However, in the the same way as Heskey (apart from the beginning of this season and much of last), he?d have a good game ? every seven or so. However, as a striker who only managed 8 goals in 44 games... which is why when we were offered just under £3M for him so many people couldn?t believe it. I have nothing against him and certainly hope he does well... just elsewhere as nobody would be gullible enough to fork out that much for him again.

Ian: As Evertonians we should remember Marcus Bent fondly, for yes, he was one of our primary strikers during the magic act that Moyes pulled off in 04-05. Doesn?t change the fact that he was, and is, almost completely bereft of what is usually called talent. Chad kind of summed up his limitations above.

I still have a hard time believing that he scored that stunning last second equalizer at Southampton in the match that Beattie scored his first for us. I was painfully reminded of that match when Henri Camara came off the bench to score against us at the JJB.

Here?s a laugh: let?s take Robbie Keane on loan for the rest of the season. He clearly can?t play a lick in a pink shirt. Can you loan out a player that you haven?t finished paying for?

Wait a minute, the Shite can do anything they bloody want, what am I thinking?

Yes Chad, while you couldn’t quite call it fuckaroundary, Marcus was certainly guilty of something awful nearly every time he found the ball at his feet while facing the opposition’s net.

Michael, I understand that YOU don't like talking about players and speculation around the club, and you find it a bit boring, but the rest of the English speaking world find it interesting, unbelievable, laughable, etc, but they will read it all the same and might even add a little themselves. So therefore why dont you let the readers make their choice instead of the smart comments. Oh by the way no-one already plays for us he replaced Lee Carsley.

Regarding Bent, he cost less than £500k so what did you expect? Van Nistelrooy?

Saying that, he helped us to 4th place playing for most of the season as the sole striker running the channels, so you have to give him credit for that. Also, we made some money when we sold him to Charlton, so all in all a good piece of business by Moyes.

Not sure why everyone is so negative towards him. It?s not like we haven?t had worse.

Re Ezquerro, he plays for Osasuna now, as Real let him go on a free at the end of last season.

You?d think Moyes already knows who he wants to bring in. Also, can?t they negotiate the deal now, and then the player just signs the paperwork once the window opens, subject to a medical?

Go out and buy Josh Kennedy from his German club. He's handy with his feet, is relatively mobile and is a massive aerial threat. He stands 6 foot 4.

Only a laugh but if Arteta could be accurate with his set plays and with a line-up of Lescott, Cahill, Mo and Kennedy, we could boss any team around in the air.

We have been linked to Ebanks Blake from Wolves again, which no-one has mentioned. Good prospect, he was among the top scorers in the Championship last year. I can't remember if he was the top scorer and is again so far this year; he could be another Lescott. Would be alrite robbing Wolves' best player... haha!

Joshua Kennedy looks nowhere near Premier League quality. When Karslruhe were playing well last season it was all down to Hajnal. I?d rather have Marko Pantelic from Hertha BSC. He sort said goodbye to the Berlin fans last Saturday and it is rumoured he could be on his way. Everton are among the clubs. Only thing is, he?s got quite a personality so I think he could clash with Moyes.

Saviola is not getting a game at Real Madrid, Jason. Even with their own striker crisis Shuster didn?t like him. Ramos might have other ideas but he is too small and lightweight to play up front on his own. Hence Real being without Van Nistlerooy for the season have a deal in place to sign his natural successor in Huntelaar. Gonna cost £17M rising to £23. HUMMMMM £2M more that Fellaini. Anyway, back to Saviola. Worth a 6 month loan deal IMHO. Still very quick and a deadly finisher. Bit like a younger Owen!!!

I think a lot of you on here are underestimating Bent's effectiveness for the team, especially in the system we played with Cahill playing off him, much in the same way people did with Carsley until the last couple of seasons.

Bent was an unsung hero in my book; yes, he had his weaknesses and was never going to score you 30 goals a season, or even 10... but some forwards give more than just goals ? like Bergkamp with creativity or Heskey with his hold up play and bringing people into the game.

We took a step backwards when we replaced Bent with Beattie.

RE: The Bent years. If anyone else here was at Millwall away in the FA Cup you will surely remember raining a shedload of fully deserved abuse at Marcus Bent. On that day, which I recall to be one of his last for the club, he gave up trying altogether, which as others have already mentioned was his only distinguishable feature.

He was complete and utter shite, and it remains a footballing miracle that he could find himself involved in a team that finished 4th.

I agree it is best to expect no-one and be surprised if and when it happens, especially after the City victory. Surely DM will opt for the same formation for the Chelsea game... although big Vic may be available and if they get a good result then who knows. Although big Vic, Timmie and Screech don?t possess great speed, they are a handful for any defence and if the defence itself can hold firm then good results may come at home too.

You people crazy?!? When I see all the names mentioned here I think that TW should be giving away its FM Christmas presents earlier, fact is we dont have money and we can only expect low-key loan signings at best. If Moyes can pull some bargain again it would be great, if not get on with it, as simple as that.

There are 15 strikers in the opening post ?!?!? Christ...

Anyway interesting to note that nobody (including me) has mentioned Bellamy who may well be on his way out of West Ham. (Or is the team spirit too important to take a risk?)

Also, since the opening game disasters, I see no more chances have been given to Baxter or Jutkiewicz.

The lad from Zenith would be good, Pavel Pogrebnyak, but he would be well out of our price range in January but he could well be a serious thought come the summer, but maybe we could try getting him on loan, the Russian season is about to end sometime soon so he could basically have his pre-season with us for a couple of months just to help us out and who know?s if he impresses and likes us maybe we could look into making it a permanent deal.

Same could be said about Vagner Love, we were vaguely linked with a January move for him once the Russian season was over, and Moyesy?s been to see him play a few times in the Uefa Cup this season so he?s definitely interested, and Vagner Love admitted himself that Everton had made contact with CSKA Moscow for him but then again he did say he?d rather play for Real Madrid. I can?t see Madrid going in for him now that they're going to splash out for Huntelaar in January so who knows? A loan deal in January with a view to a permanent deal in the summer??!!
