Transfer Policy Ineptitude

Comments (43)

Once again our transfer policy has been shown as totally incapable. This time last year we let McFadden go for just over £5m and in today's papers, Birmingham are saying they won't listen to bids under £18m.

We are obviously so desparate for money last year that we let an £18m striker go for about a quarter of his real value. When will we ever get it right?

Don’t believe the hype.

Seriously Phil, if you go around believing everything you read in the papers, you’re going to be eternally dissapointed..........on no wait, we;re Evertonians so it goes with the territory!

If McFadden is worth £18m then I must be worth at least the £5m we let him go for and I haven’t kicked a ball in anger for over 3 years!

I read this report as well. I think you’re being really unfair on the club and David Moyes. McLeish has said they’ll sell for £18 million, doesn’t mean anyone is going to pay it. We got £5.25 million for JM which I still think was good business for a lad who wanted to go and (to be fair) was only ever going to be a bit-part player in our team.

I hereby state that we will not listen to offers for Andy Van Der Meyde under £10 million!!! Are you listening Man City?

I saw that and was taken aback to start with but lets say he had stayed.
The Yak was £12M. Is he better than the Yak? If we had kept him one of two things would have happened:

1) He would have struggled to fit in to the team as it was before. Don't get me wrong, he?s a great talent and I wish he had stayed, but he wasn't exactly indespensible.

2) He would have found some form and flourished into the best player we have ever had. Maybe then we could have demanded £18m for him.

Birmingham have obviously slapped that price on him so no one will buy him coz ? grand tho he is ? it's only an idiot who would spend that amount on him.

I was made up we got £5m for him. He was never good enough for EFC - terrible first touch and hardly prolific. He scored a few spectacular goals (Charlton last minute springs to mind) but nothing more than a bit part player in my mind. I think MK posted a comment earlier on another link that said it all - newspaper garbage. Stop reading the rags and just wait til we’ve signed someone (i.e. when it’s done and dusted).

I think Phil had his tongue well and truly in his cheek gentlemen.

A price of £5m slapped on his head would keep him at Birmingham I’m sure.

I like him though. Luxury player for me and definitely wise to let him go although the timing could have been better.

He was useless, completely overrated. He?s at his correct level at Birmingham, and so understandably they want to keep him ? hence the insane price tag. Doesn?t mean he?s worth that though, I was delighted when somebody gave us £5m for him. He?s only a £3m player, even in this day and age.

£18 million for Fadders.... you are having a laugh!! Obviously priced at that, if its true, to deter anyone from making a bid for him. This means Screech was well worth the money at £11.5 then so perhaps Moyes ain?t so mad as we could have a future star on our hands [with a bit of luck!!]

Daniel and Ciaran are spot on; McFadden is slow and not a natural goal scorer. He is one of those players who has built his reputation on scoring the odd spectacular goal. Previous examples are Micky Walsh who we bought on the strength of a wonder goal for Blackpool. Well,he wasn?t much use. Justin Fashinau was another (didn?t he fool Brian Clough?)

We got about double what McFadden was worth and as Daniel said he?s found his level; as has James Beattie. I can?t see there being many Premier League quality strikers available in January so what do we do? Well, hope that Saha gets fit and stays fit for a while. Hope that Vic is actually Premier League quality. Then, adopt DM?s favoured "us against the world" siege mentality to grind out a few results.

It?s certainly not what I hoped for last summer when we took a disappointing backward step, but sadly it?s what we?re stuck with.

Phil,

We have gone from perennial relegation candidates with an ageing squad of little value to annual european challengers with young internationals on a net spend of roughly £4 million a year.

I think our transfer policy is working quite well, this summer excepted.

Someone has been at the mulled wine a little early here.

Phil, as Ciaran noted, we fooking mugged McLeish, he is a £2m player at best and we got £5m, the team who deal with our outgoing transfers should be arrested, as we continually get a decent amount for crap players.

Just look at the fees for Bent, Zinedine Kilbane, Johnson and especially Fadds.

Also didn?t our own chairman say he wouldn?t sell Rooney for less than £50m? We let him go for a few quid and a packet of processed peas (comparitively) in the end.

Stupid posting, even if tongue in cheek.

Everton fans have a chance to meet Howard Kendall on Friday, 19 December when he visits the National Football Museum in Preston in order to sign copies of The Football Hall of Fame, an official publication published in September in celebration of the greatest players and managers in history. The book features profiles of Dixie Dean, Tommy Lawton, Alan Ball, Gary Lineker and, of course, Howard Kendall, who was inducted in 2005. The event begins at 12:30pm, and fans will also have a chance to see the Museum, which has been described as ?a fantastic place? by The Times.

This has to be the funniest post I've ever read on hear! Firstly - don't even get me started on people who read one of those comic books otherwise known as the Sun, Star or the Mirror and then believe every word of it! We got good money for McFadden, he was never good enough for a top-half Prem team (which is what we are). He could just about be good enough for a lower team in the Prem, but even in the Championship hes not exactly set it alight has he?! £5m was excellent business for a very average player who?s contract was almost up. as for the £18 million bit ? it's so laughable that I'm not even going to comment on it!

£18 million for a striker who has only scored 3 times in the Championship this season.

Bargain.

Ebanks Blake, who we have been tentatively linked with, has scored 14. I think that must make him worth £100 million +.

Let's hope Bill didn't keep his transfer funds in Landsbanki.

I guess this confirms he's "Scotland's Rooney".

Well guys, I know it is warm this winter, but no ? it is not already 1st April. This was reported on BBC rumour thread as coming from the Daily Star.

My kid said I don?t post on here often enough as people think I am serious.

So to Ben Howard, Damien Wilde and Brendan McLaughlin - thanks guys for knowing a wind-up when you see one. For some of you, if I was a fisherman ? I wish you were fish, because you went for this one hook, line and sinker and some of you even tried to eat the rod and reel.

McFadden worth £18m - you have to be having a laugh ? But we have got used to so many negative posts on this site in the last few months that this is a parady of all those awful threads which says we are the worst performing, worst managed, worst run club in the whole world, let alone the Premier League. Well we ain?t. We may not be the best ? which is a bit gutting for those of us who believe in NSNO - but we are not that bad. As some of you pointed out, getting £5m for McFadden was a steal.

Anyway here is to Christmas. Happy New Year everyone who runs and reads Toffeeweb and . . . . . COYB!!

18p for McBadden and I'd feel ripped off. Lest we forget, this is the man Berti Vogts said was Scotland?s Wayne Rooney. I don?t disagree... the Scottish league is right up there with the erm.. French and Welsh leagues...

What I wouldn't disagree with is that we tend to pay over the top and sell on the cheap. Wonder who we can blame for that... Kenwright perhaps? Sshhhh... he?s a blue.

The core element of the thread ? £18M for McFadden ? was not made up (at least not by the author), therefore that part was not a wind-up. Phil?s overreaction was a bit OTT but I thought I?d let you lot deal with it as you saw fit.

Personally, I don?t think posts like this achieve their intended goal ? they are not going to change the minds of those who feel there are issues for which there is a genuine basis for gripping about the club.

As for "all those awful threads which says we are the worst performing, worst managed, worst run club in the whole world, let alone the Premier League." ? Poppycock, sir. Coming out with drivel like that is indeed grounds for having you banned!

I think it?s preferable for most who read these pages for them to assume as a starting premise that the posts are genuine. But the Silly Season apparently started in earnest two weeks ago... so have at it!
