Perception v Reality

Comments (10)

This is a brief point, the Sky know-alls have determined for the sake of trying to create the wonderful breakthrough of a team into the top four and Villa are the one to do it, now the press have followed and joined the bandwagon.

I don't know about any one else but currently the difference between Everton and Villa is the game at Goodison in which I believe we showed we are equal to if not better than they are. If we had won, as we deserved in my opinion to do, then it would be goal difference seperating us. Bearing in mind our poor start to the season and our lack of strikers throughout the campaign, then even goal differnce can be dramatically improved from here on in (ie, with January transfers).

The perception of everyone that Villa are the team is in our favour, the pressure is off. The reality is we are in a position to take fourth as much as any one else and with an improving team that has had its bad spell then I feel very positive about the potential of fourth. Villa will have a poor spell also and will also have the European distraction.

All-in-all, we should go into the Christmas period supportive and motivated by the possibility starting with beating Chelsea, which will certainly make a few people start taking notice that we are serious contenders, I actually think we will win.

The crowd, as stated in another post, can make a difference; Chelsea wont sell their allocation so more reason for supporters to be as intimidating as possible.

Paul, whatever Sky or the media say. We know the truth. We could be just good friends...

To be honest, I don't know where to start when it comes to predicting our league position at the end of the season. One minute I'm thinking if we can produce the form of the last three games over the coming months then fourth place is a possibility or at worst the top six. The next minute I'm thinking if we have another blip and show the form from the start of the season then we could finish closer to the bottom six.

One thing's for sure, though; whatever we do, we will more than likely do it the hard way, that's just Everton.

Lewis,
I know exactly how you feel. How good, or bad are we? At the moment we are seventh having played more bad games than good. If the results against Portsmouth, Blackburn and Wigan had gone our way, then champions league football would be a possibility. Of course had West Ham. City, and Utd gone differently, then we?d be worrying about relegation. That suggests to me that we are a top half side but no more.

However, I believe that the way results have gone this season points to the fact that a change was possible. Spending £15 million on Fellaini would have been good business had we had another £15 million to spend. We were never in a position to spend that money on a player for the future, which is what he is. That money, invested wisely in June, could have set us up for a challenge for fourth place.

Paul, the difference between us and Villa is 6pts and a far better goal difference. They are 4th in the table on merit, if we we?re the better side, then we would be above them, wouldn?t we?

You can?t go on the one game at Goodison, were we we?re the better side. If you are going to do that, then what about villa?s game at the Emirates, they played Arsenal off the park, what happened to us there? They are still in the Uefa Cup, and out of the so called top 4, only Chelsea have beat them, so, for the moment, you would have to say, overall they are the better side.

You also can?t judge on 17 games, we?ll see at the end of the season who the better side are.

At the moment we are 6 points behind them and we?ve had far more problems in terms of injuries to key players. They?ve had a fully fit squad to choose from all season.

They where the third biggest spenders in Europe behind Inter Milan and Man City this season and I don?t see any massive difference in them. Certainly nothing to say they are a lot better than us.

If we had their money in my opinion we?d be far ahead of them. At the moment there?s isn?t a massive difference between us because O?Neill bought a load of squad players without improving the side as much as he could have. Just my opinion of course.

We can take Chelsea, providing we have some person resembling a front man, and the back four keep Drogba and Anelka quiet... and, and, and...

Nick, "and, and, and...." Moyes actually grows a pair of balls for a change, against one of the so called big 4!

Who needs someone resembling a front man? Do we not have a back four many clubs would envy? And our 4-6-0 formation will leave them marking shadows.

Please DM do it. Goals from any of Tim, Leon or the big Fella ? or even a dig from Segundo way out. It can be done.

I tend to agree with Keith. I?d like to see AvdM start and by virtue of his pace keep Boswinga occupied. A goal nicked here or there could see us with 3 points. No harm in being positive!

Tony, whereas I do agree AvdM is a great wide player and I would like to see him in the team, he simply does not have the fitness for anything more than 20 minutes, especially against Chelsea.
