New Heys School 1 - 0 Everton FC (Mid 70s)

Comments (9)

Does anyone else recall the Everton first team visiting New Heys Comprehensive School and playing a friendly on the school pitch against the school First Eleven?

It happened in the mid-seventies, '76 or '77 I guess. I was in the first or second year and remember being awestruck seeing the players so close, walking across the school yard behind Bob Latchford and the rest of the Everton squad! Can you imagine that happening now!

The whole lower school gathered around the pitch to watch the kick around and the school team won one-nil ? the sixth former who scored lived in the same street as me, Moss Street in Garston, and I was mates with his brother ("Kidder"), can't remember the scorer's name though... Perhaps others can add any further detail to this as I haven't seen it recorded or mentioned in any books ? but I am sure it happened.

Sorry Steve, nothing to contribute.

Except that my folks retired to Gronant village in North Wales, and each Christmas morning there was a football match between the school and ’the village’. There were, perhaps not too surprisingly, a number of old pros who could turn out for the village including Ian Callaghan, an England international I believe.

My father asked him in the pub after the game why he had put a young lad over the fence. He said something like - ’Well, I wasn’t going to let him get around me twice, was I?’ Sounds fair enough to me.

Just remembered the name of the lad who scored agaianst Everton - Steven Leonard.

Nice one Keith - I actually played against Dave Hickson once (over the hill mob), still had laces going round his boots twice and hard toe ends, and he knocked me over he was that strong at about 70 years - brilliant!

Can’t say I remember the name of the school, but around this era BBC’s football focus did a piece on Everton playing a school team, complete with Match of the Day intro, titles, and Motson commentating.

The Everton team visited a few schools in 1977, including my school, The Bluecoat. I?ll always remember this as I had a great conversation with Brian Hamilton, who a few weeks later was involved in one of our most controversial incidents... Clive Thomas and that "goal" v Liverpool.

Keith Glazzard

Are you sure it wasn?t Gerry Byrne, the ex-red shite full back? Gerry lived in Gronant and I believe still lives in the area. I live in Prestatyn and used to see Byrne quite often, his bungalow was on the coast road by Gronant crossroads.

While we?re into nostalgia.... Keith ? are you the Keith Glazzard who went to Ellesmere Port Grammar from 1961 to 1967? I remember you having red hair and when I joined, having the same colour hair, everyone thought I was your brother. Sorry, this is Evertonians Reunited isn?t it?

I remember this Steve as I was in the same year as you. We also played some five-a-side games before the main game, where the players split into different sides. Our year beat Everton 2-1.
