Man City, who do they think they are?

Comments (23)

I am a life long Everton fan and don't live in blighty anymore; so maybe a little out of it but, having just read a few articles that Mark Hughes has Arteta and Lescott on his list and is going to table a bid of £8 mil... so here are my points:

1. Lescott is easily worth £20 - 25 mil;
2. If Carrick was worth £20 mil 2 seasons ago, Arteta must be worth £30 - 40 mil;
3. And lastly, we are one of the few clubs in the Prem to post a profit, albeit small... but a profit.

Just because Man City are the richest club in the world, it doesn't mean they have the power or the right just to sign whoever they feel like. And personally I don't think we actually need to sell anyone, we are on the right track financially and on the field so Man City you are not welcome to come near our players... except AvdM!!!!! COYB

Since City are so rich, we can surely just name a price similarly to West Ham with Bellamy. There’s no way he’s worth £15million.

£8 mil for the pair of them??? There was a time when a certain AJ costs £8 mil alone!

Surely, it’s a sign of how well we are doing that the likes of Man City and Arsenal are after our best players. But like a response to the Arteta article on here, let’s tell everyone where to go this January.

We have a real team here, not just a bunch of players. We want to build this team even more. We want to achieve something with this team. We don’t want to sell. We will stand together. WE ARE EVERTON!!!

The world's best fullback Alves was bought for £25M in the summer and Cole was valued at £15M from arsenal.

Doubt Lescott is worth £20-25M.

Lescott is not worth anything like the amount quoted by Doug. And come to that, neither is Arteta. However, I will agree that Man City do not have any right to sign whomever they want. As I stated in a different thread, "Money talks!"

It?s a joke, if Arsenal are prepaing a £12 million bid for Arteta we should reject it straight up. Diarra has just cost Real Madrid £20 mill and Arteta is better than him, so what does that make Arteta worth? Also, if Arteta left we?d miss his creativity and how much would he cost to replace??!!

Doug, the figures you?ve quoted are pure fantasy mate, way out of the stratosphere. There's no way any of our players are worth that much ? in fact, there aren?t that many players in world football that are.

I?ll wager there aren?t too many big money moves at all in January ? if there are, I very much doubt we?ll sell Arteta and Lescott. We might sell one of them, but both I doubt. £12M for Arteta would be good business incidentally. The same can be said of Lescott in my opinion.

I agree with almost everything in this thread except for one. I?m afraid we would have to give them £8 mil to take Andy vdM. Really. I have hoped for years a miracle will happen and he will show us the form and skills he once undoubtedly has but by now you have to ask, what is this man still doing at Everton???

I think the current climate will affect transfer fees and we will not be seeing the ridiculous amounts tabled in previous seasons (except maybe from Citeh).

However, I beg to differ James, IMO £12m would not be good business for Arteta at all. Maybe you?re correct in saying that not many players would command more than that at the moment, but seing as we paid £15m for Fellaini in the summer, it would be terrible business to then sell Arteta for £12m. Glad you?re not looking after my wallet.

Anyway, I feel that it is irrelevant whether the player is worth it or whether our rivals will pay it, we don?t want to sell so we do an O?Neill and slap a huge price tag on them. We may not get £20m in the current market, but the players are worth that to us. They are both contracted to us for a while yet, so they will only go for a lot of money, regardless of whether they are worth it.

Like others have said above, we should protect the team that it has taken so long to build, and selling Arteta to the team directly above us would be anything but "good business".

For several years now it seems players can choose who they play for, until this summer.

Firstly there was Man Utd who just flatly insisted on talking about Ronaldo leaving, let alone a transfer fee. If a player is under contract, he plays for that club. If the player doesn’t want to play for the club, let him rot in the stands or the reserves until his contract runs out.

Secondly, Villa admitted that Barry wanted to leave for Liverpool. However, they turned the situation around to make Liverpool look the bad guys. Possibly Villa had inside knowledge of how much Liverpool had to spend as they said from the start the price was £18m. Liverpool eventually bid up to £17m which was turned down and told £18m or nothing. Liverpool walked away with nothing as they couldn’t raise the extra £1m??? by trying to sell Alonso. Lesson two, price the team out of the market.

Therefore if Arsenal are serious about Arteta, look at similar players. Fellaini £15m, Carrick £18m, Barry £18m. Tell Arsenal £25m and he can go.

Have to take exception to the £12 million for Arteta good business comment. Who exactly will we get to replace him, and at what cost? I don't want good business, I want trophies. If the board decide to offload our best players in January, I will seriously be pissed off. Why would he go to the gooners? As someone else said, he would play for 4 months and when Fabregas returns he'll be dropped and he won't get a place on the wing as Wenger won't play him there.

I believe that if we?re offered £15M for Arteta we?d take it.

I HOPE I?m wrong and I don?t want to sell him but the opportunity to reinvest may prove too tempting for the Chairman and Moyes.

Like I said, I hope I?m wrong but.....

It's not about what the player is worth as a footballer in comparison with other similar players. It's about what the player is worth to the club itself; we cannot afford to let Arteta go for anything less than £20mil because if he went for less then the replacements will not be of the quality to keep our push for 4th!

Much as I admire Arteta, I think it defies belief that people on this site should suggest he?s worth £20 million plus. At the end of September, I?d have grabbed £5 million for him.

I agree that many Evertonians seem to (understandably) vastly over-rate some of the lads. Arteta is a skillful and creative player, a fantastic signing by Moyes, but to suggest that he is worth £20 million or more is ludicrous. He’d struggle to hold down a regular starting place at Arsenal, Chelsea or Man U. £12 million tops.

Lescott? £10-12 mill. VERY few defenders are worth more than that, and I don’t think he’s quite world class.

Fellaini was over-priced anyway.

He?s more important to the team than Maro at the moment, therefore >£15mil should be a starting point? But I?d rather not see a price named at all, just "NOT FOR SALE".

Player value mostly comes down to the team's need to sell. If Everton badly need the money, they may have to cash in. It's the nature of the beast.

As for City?s right to buy players. Of course they have the right to try. You don?t have to like it. Technically, we have the right to offer Barca a straight swap, Messi for AvdM!
