Mehmet Aurellio

Comments (30)

Everton have been linked with the Turkish holding midfielder Mehmet Aurellio, he is 30 years old and available on a free. I wanted to know the views of fellow Evertonians. Would he be a good replacement for Carsley?

Does anyone have more information on him? I personally think that if Moyes could get him in on a free this would would represent a good bit of business, he's still got a good few years left in him.

I was impressed by him in Euro 2008 ? not quite as much as Altintop but more so as the tournament went on. Took an understated but solid role in their advancement to the semis. I think he would be a very good replacement for Carsley (he?s just as bald! — well not quite, he shaved his for the Euros), knows how to pass the ball as well as put himself about in the tackle... and he was born in Brazil ? what more could you ask for?!

The story is going round that this guy has agreed to sign for us, quoting Marca, a Spanish paper.

In fact the article in Marca suggests that he has agreed to sign for Real Betis.

From the three games I saw of him in the Euros (not a lot I know), on a free, I would bite your hand off.

Granted I did note 1 or 2 mistakes but nothing that you would call a howler. I am a Carsley fan and think this guy would give us a much better passing range than Carsley (not hard I hear you say) Also, I think he is at least as good as Cars as breaking up play. Based on the fact that we probably will not get him, I will stick neck my neck on the line and say I believe he would take us up a notch further (based on a direct replacement for Cars)

If it is true then it just goes to show how much money we have to spend, which most of us thought all along, silch.

It's all over the spanish press that Aurelio was going to join Betis them on a free from Fenerbace. He has done a U-turn after we came in at the last minute and offered him more money.

Who says we have no money? Getting players on a free transfer can be good business. If it’s good enough for Bolton and Portsmouth, why knock it. We probably need more numbers than we can afford to buy anyway. Let’s go for it!

Do you see Man U or Arsenal getting freebies? I'm not knocking it but it smacks of no money to me... and to say "if it's good enough for Bolton" well that says it all. I thought we was a big club, Bolton ain't mate.

The latest from Marca is that Betis upped their offer and they expect to announce it in the next few hours.

As expected probably!

Exactly the sort of holding player we are looking for, alright he’s no whipper-snapper, but on a free!!! Cultured but with a bite I think he would improve on Carsley, and as much as most of us have only seen alittle of him in the Euros, the question you have to ask yourself is: Him, or Neville in our midfield next year?

I read that real betis pulled out due to financial reasons and his agent has said he wants a new challenge in the premier league

Will free up money for more creative midfielders!

Looks like a good replacement to me, much better than Engerlaar!

Tom Green,

AC milan just signed flamini on a free, Chelsea signed Ballack on a free,if its good enough for AC and Chelsea! is that more pallatable for you. Anyway, would you rather we paid fenerbace a fee for him? I don?t get it, we get a good international holding midfield player for nothing but a signing on fee and your not happy? (if we have got him that is)

Just checked the official Betis site - they seem pretty convinced Aurelio is coming to them in preference to us. Thinking back to Vogel last summer, the free transfer and Real Betis cocktail just doesn’t seem to work for us

Phil McRacken,
I don?t rate Flamini or Ballack, and if you look at the AC Milan players albeit a few, they are well past their best and are not a patch on Man U or Arsenal, so I'm sticking to my guns here and will say it again: you don?t get quailty players for nothing, and no I wouldn't pay a fee for him. I would pay good money for Moutinhio.

Tom Green,

Whether you rate Flamini or Ballack isn’t your issue, its whether big name clubs sign people on free transfers.

Are you saying AC Milan and Chelsea aren’t big clubs?

Tom - you sound like a stubborn get - saying you don;’t rate Flamini - the man responsible for freeing up Fabregas - JUST so you can save face and not admit you’re wrong.

Derby day would be confusing with an Aurelio on both sides.

He’s got 4 years on Carsley so may be worth it, although I don’t know anything about him. In Moyes We Trust!..... if we get him....

I liked the look of him in the Euros. Looked a tidy midfielder with good defensive qualities. I haven’t seen him before the Euros though so beyond this I don’t know much about him.

He’d be excellent on a free. He’s experienced and a Brazilian.....he must be good. I’d also like to see us get in a younger, physically bigger holding midfielder.

Someone like Alou Diarra maybe. A rich mans Sissoko and a poor mans Viera. He’s the right size, strong in the tackle, mobile and is a tidy distributor. We’ve been linked with him before.

Todays rumour mill has us linked with Pavelchenko and below it states that Arshavin may well be heading to chelski for a fee of 12 million - the majority of this being Moyes transfer budget.....I bloody damm well hope that this isn’t all he’ll get!
12 million will get us one player for this season. Anyone know roughly the figures he may well get?

I think Ballack and Flamini are both class acts.
We might as well get this guy on a free if he’s any good - worst case scenario, he’s shite and we give him away on a free. Best case scenario we’ll get a steal. If he’s anywhere in between we can always sell him or keep him for the squad.
The turks had such a good spirit in the Euros that if I was a Premier League manager I’d be looking at some of their players. I think Colin Kazim-Richards might be worth a closer look too...

Update on Marca?s website this evening below, translated from the original Spanish by me (I speak fluent Spanish):

?The negotiations were very difficult. At first everything was going well and both parties (Aurelio and Lopera, Betis Chairman) were in agreement on all of the points of his (proposed) contract. Betis would have to pay a million Euros to the player as a signing on fee?but Lopera wanted to pay in three instalments whereas the player?s agent wanted it in one payment, and so with that the negotiations stalled.

Seeing that Lopera wouldn?t give in Mehmet began to negotiate with Everton. Despite the Premier League club offering more money the intention of the Turkish player is to play in Spain. Lopera finally gave in to the wishes of Mehmet?s agent and will pay a million Euros. Now the Green and Whites will be able to announce the signing in the coming hours.?

So, would have been nice but looks like this particular Brazilian prefers Seville to Liverpool and will sign for Betis on Friday, according to www.marca.com

As Kunai says, 12 million will get us ONE player THIS season.
Any guesses what the 10 million spending power from Kirkby will get us in 3 years time?
A big toe perhaps?

Ciarán - The truth is that we need a competent holding midfielder who knows how to find a man with a decent pass and knows how to break up play with sound positioning and good tackles and there are very few of those around.

Aurelio proved himself to be such a player in the recent Euro Championships so despite his age I would have been overjoyed if we signed him. Shame that he prefers the sun and sangria to the rain and Cains on offer in Liverpool.

Does anyone else think Aurelio looks a bit like Patrick Viera? In all seriousness, I think he will definitely be a much better player than what Carsley was. Top signing if our club can pull it off.
