Why not de-camp to Wigan?

Comments (26)

If, like me, you think that DK is a no-hoper and Blue Bill will be saved from himself by the Planning Inspectorate`s rejection of the scheme, your thoughts will already be turning to the inevitable Plan B, the renovation of Goodison Park.

This morning I read that Spurs are about to announce a total re-vamp of White Hart Lane and are considering a temporary move to Milton Keynes (45 miles away!) whilst the work is in progress. So where could Everton de-camp to whilst our natural home gets its overdue re-build?

Now I know some Evertonians have already suggested `New Anfield` but to be tennants of `that lot` even on a temporary basis would be a bitter pill to swallow, so for me it`s either Bolton or Wigan with the latter winning it for me purely on proximity. Any other suggestions?

Ridiculous, 25,000 max capacity.

We could not afford it.

Anfield is the only anwer.

Wigan's pitch is shocking. Beside the capacity, the River Douglas leaks into the pitch when it is high. That is what causes the mud bath down the centre.

I would have no qualms whatsoever about decamping to Anfield, it played a big part in our history at the end of the day.

I actually think that Liverpool supporters would find it harder to swallow than we would - we will always have the argument that it was our original home and therefore there would be no shame in moving there on a temporary basis whilst they would be choking on their embarrassing banners while they watch their beloved kop transformed into a blue and white wall of noise.

Imagine how funny it would be if we made Anfield into a more fearsome venue for opposition teams, after years of swallowing shit about the ’legendary’ Anfield atmosphere it would be hilarious if we showed them up big time.

Bring it on.

Move to Anfield!?

I?m staggered. No, I?m beyond staggered. I?m utterly incredulous that anyone could even think about suggesting it.

I give up. I really do.

The votes of my family (all five of us are season ticket holders) are all for Wigan. They have just spent a fortune on a new pitch and as long as there?s room for all our season ticket holders, the ground is big enough.
(Oh, I should perhaps mention we live at Orrell!)

Various experts have posted on here that it would be possible to redevelop GP in situ with the capacity never dropping below 30,000.
We would start by adding another tier onto the park end in the close season adding 7,000 seats to give us a capacity of 47,000.

Then as I recall we would build a new stand behind Bullens Road and ultimately marry the two up which would impact on attendances but as I said capacity never dropping below 30,000.

No need for Wigan (too small and not good enough) and Anfield looks highly dubious anyway as it would have to be sold to help fund the Yankee stadium.

Jesus, get a grip of yaself. Decamp to Wigan? A town in Greater Manchester? You're off yer head lad. Call yerself an Evertonian.

Play at Anfield whilst construction work at Goodison goes on.

I wonder how much Anfield will go for ?

Nowhere near £78million, leaving £50 million + for players

No obstructed views
Still in the city... capacity about right... incredibly poxy jammyness for its occupants... benifits from all the new Bars and restraunts the new stadium in Stanley Park had attracted...Best of all: the gobshites would be besides themselves with rage for ever and ever and ever...

Sorry guys just thinking out loud, but for a nightmare senario... it doesn't half tick a lot of boxes doesn't it?

So if we go back to Anfield, what woud we call the Kop? Perhaps Toffeeweb could run a competition for new names for each part of the secure facility.

If we temporarily haunt Anfield, will a blood sacrifice and saying the Lord’s Prayer backwards give us some of Liverpool’s Devil’s Luck?

Hasn?t some part of Liverpool's deal for New Anfield got something to do with Anfield being knocked down though?

Just to say quickly that the reason it's a mudbath was a problem with the undersoil heating pipe down the middle of the pitch, which burnt the grass and left the mud uncovered if you see what I mean. The pitch shouldn?t be a problem now its been relaid. That being said, Wigan is a non-starter. We won?t be going anywhere. If it ain?t called in, we still won?t get the money together...

What aspect of Rugby League tears up the pitch?

It's caused by the football stars rolling around on it like tarts, and sliding around on their knees.

I think some of you are missing the point, any proposed move to Anfield would be for a very short period of time ? say one or two season to allow us to redvelop Goodison. The original plans for Anfield could still be carried out, just a couple of years after the original deadline.

Could we move into the Echo Arena for a couple of years and just play our best players in the Mersey Masters? At least we’d have a chance of winning a trophy.

@ Eric Myles...

The kop stand didn?t exist when Everton played there. A stand was only built there in 1906 according to the wikipedia article on Anfield... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anfield

"After Liverpool had won their second League Championship in 1906, a new stand was built along the Walton Breck Road. Local journalist Ernest Edwards, who was the sports editor of local newspapers the Liverpool Daily Post and Echo, christened it the Spion Kop. It was named after a famous hill in South Africa where a local regiment had suffered heavy losses during the Boer War in 1900. More than 300 men had died, many of them from Liverpool, as the British army attempted to capture the strategic hilltop. Around the same period a stand was also built along Kemlyn Road"

Perhaps we could wear a special red kit for a season or two while we played there to help smooth things for our neighbours. Maybe the Premier League might then bend over backwards to get us into the Champions League when we finish 5th. Hansen might have something positive to say on MOTD. Oh yes, the more you think about it, the more it appeals. I can’t wait to phone into 5 Live, suck up to Alan Green and demand the manager to be sacked after two bad results. Yep, can’t wait meself...

As for moving temp as tenants to Anfield, it's a no-brainer as they say, and why not? Frankly it was OUR home first as everyone is aware.
As someone who would never ever set foot in Anfield (supported for 40 years), it's the only time I would be there.

Imagine the fun on the day the last game we actually reside there, and the Red Shite nerves jangling as to what might occur... :-)

Part of Anfield has to be knocked down before the new one is complete, so we can?t use it.

Otherwise I?d actually be in favour of buying it, painting it blue and replacing all the seats.

Keep the name Goodison Park and everyone?s happy.

Or are they?

Nice idea, never gonna happen.

I have no qualms about taking Anfield temp or perm but its a done deal, the RS will knock it down long beforewe get our grubby blues mitts on it.
