Boosting the brand

Comments (13)

I have been thinking about the merchandising issues that have been debated recently on here, in particular the lack of presence in the City itself.

It's got me wondering - tell me I'm an idiot but is it possible that we have made some sort of agreement with LFC (like a pact with the devil) to keep out of their way re building their liver brand? And that maybe we have done this in exchange for funds? Could we have perhaps similarly agreed to let them muscle in on our early history (a la Rev Ben Chambers and the church team foundations) to help boost their brand? Is this kind of whoring or our heritage a possibility?

Perhaps I'm going mad, the current uncertainty is probably taking its toll........

It might explain why the new kit?s delayed. Couldn?t get enough red dye. Having said that, perhaps the pink ladies shirt is BK?s gradual step towards the unthinkable - and a point I raised a year ago. If Kirkby happens, Tesco are our natural sponsor - so where does the red Tesco wave fit on the shirt?

(Don?t worry everyone I?m a trained neotiator)

Hello Leo,
Just do as I tell you and everything will be Ok & I won?t let those nasty EFC & LFC conspirators hurt you :

Put down the knife & let the nice people you are holding hostage go.

Untie the lady at the commputer, who typed your message for you & please take that shotgun from her mouth.

Please remove the booby trapped bomb from behind the door.

You are not mad so please just lie down quietly on the floor & some lovely men will came to take you to a very soft dark cell, sorry room . You?ll recognise them by their colourful yellow van.

Take the sweeties they give you & you?ll be back in the Lower Bullens stand quicker than you can say ?cheerio AJ?.

Good luck with your recovery, Leo.

Nice joke, Leo!

But then just before I read this I was trying to get some stuff for my son and the results are shocking. Practically nothing on the online store.

Then I think, well JJB will at least have a load of gear. And they do, but they have 3 times more Liverpool stuff available online.

The fact is that Everton don’t care about merchandising. So is there a simple reason for this or is it just that we are poor and couldn’t care less?

I often wonder about EFC merchandising and the myth it makes you money. Apart from the top 4 and maybe Newcastle and Spurs, then it?s not a real source of income for us. I look at my mates and the people that sit around us at the game and if I?m going to be honest the vast majority of season tickets holders don?t wear any colors at all. Out of the 6 of us that go every game, just one person has or has worn an EFC strip and that has always been the case and we often take the piss out of him for it. We all have children that are decked out in the Royal Blue but once they get to drinking age then it?s replaced by the current fashion names.

I do own EFC shorts for when I?m on holiday and the odd polo shirt bought as a present but that?s about it. This is I think unique to EFC, LFC and possibly MUFC regulars and goes back to the bad old days of the 70s/80s when the casual fashion was more of a statement then the clubs colors. My other mate thinks it?s because we go on the piss after every game and don?t want to stay on County Road all night!!

Anyway, its in the culture of 30+ fans not wear tops so that excludes a lot of paying punters, which in turn adds to the lack of interest in merchandising. Could you imagine EFC fans turning up to GP like Newcastle fans do all wearing the strip? I think not. COYB

What kind of a loony would suggest something like this?

Oh, it was me.
Twas done somewhat half tongue in cheek but after about 3 days of trueblue paranoia pouring out of this site I am starting to believe anything is possible.

I daresay the real reason for our total invisibility in the city and lack of merchandising in any shops is an expedient decision to cut costs preferring to go with web based sales as the cheapest alternative.

Leo we all get what shall we say ?Tired & emotional ? from time to time supporting this club.

I dare say (if rumours are to be believed) & the Kirkby decision is today thousands of us will be pushed ?over the edge? by tonight and this site will be awash in ?Lunatic? posts over the weekend (whichever way it goes).

Alan Willo, absolutely spot on mate. I think a lot of it is because the RS deck themselves from head to toe in red so we don?t, they have great big flags and scarfs so we don?t, they hold there scarfs above the head so we don?t. I think, though wouldn?t swear on it, we where one of the 1st to wave our scarfs in a circle above our heads, which used to look quite impressive but we don?t even do that now. Anyhow nothing looks worse than a 40-year-old fat fucker with a shirt stretched across his hugh belly straining at the seams with the Chang sign pointing to the sky.

It seems to me that Everton’s marketing / brand promotion is truly awful. A few years back I bought a great St Domingos t shirt in the club shop in town. My brother went looking for something similar in JJB recently. When he managed to find the Everton stuff it was just the usual replicas with none of the interesting ’heritage’ stuff. And it was a complete mess with half of it on the floor. Why did we hand over the marketing to these clowns?

And it’s not just kits. I went to see Everton Ladies at home to Arsenal ladies a couple of years back. There was no indication anywhere around the ground that two of the best teams in Britain were playing there that day. There were no programmes or other information and even the pie shop was shut!

Given that women’s football is such a fast part of the sport it seems sensible to me to push the Everton brand in this area while it’s relatively cheap to do so. Make a land grab for all those neutral fans out there before Man U etc get their act together.

I wrote to Everton about it but never got a reply. Great football club, awful marketing.

Alan And Kevin
people are people they have to be marketed to correctly and that includes targetting and getting the right product out.

There’s a lot to be made out of merchandising. Why do you think our fan base is different from any other set of supporters.

The only difference is the shirt design and quality, the marketing department(or lack of it)and the determination.

For the chairman to say "Only newcastle fans buy shirts" is an absolute joke.Does he think they are aliens, different from the rest of us.

It is all part of branding and as always the board cant be arsed unless somebody else does it for them.

Aside from a home shirt every couple of years I don’t buy much purely because it generally of dubious quality and nearly always involves gawdy designs and clour schemes. THe only true quality bit of gear we bought from EFC was the Baby’s soothers which were boss! Our little girl loved them above all other makes. A quality German designed product with a small crest on.

Us slightly older Blues ( Alan Willo is right about us and not wearing colours dating from the casual years ) wouldn’t be seen dead in a replica tracksuit ( or a shell suit!! ) or a tatty t-shirt with some large, wacky version of the club’s badge all over the front and back.

So two things that can be improved:

1/ Put some subtlety into the range. Smart, QUALITY gear with SMALL badges ( maybe just the tower) on a sleeve end or back of the collar perhaps. Tell Umbro to do one and get them made by Lacoste or somebody so the quality is top notch.

2/ The girls and ladies ranges could be expanded. The utter farce surrounding the pink shirts which actually happened twice last season at least proved there is a big market there. But again, Everton, make it tasteful and make it classy. No big badges, drug induced designs please.

And the shop is too small on matchday,
And too much is out of stock.
AND WE NEED A CITY CENTRE STORE, FOR PROFILE AS MUCH AS PROFIT!!
