Gilberto Silva

Only a rumour I know but if true I think he would Silva would be an excellent purchase. I could see him slotting into the deep lying midfield role. He is a great passer of the ball and his lack of pace would not hinder him protecting the defenders. Also heard the rumour about Darren Bent personally I think he would score more goals than AJ although he would cost more, he is younger and we could recoup the money we pay in a few years time.

It would be a masterstroke coup by Everton if we were to acquire him. We could play him to 40 like Keown.

I?m torn... I just can?t make my mind up who I?d rather see in the holding role next season. Phillip Neville or a World Cup winning, Premier League winning, FA Cup winning Brazillian International. I?ll get back to you on this one!

This is a good buy if we can get Gilberto. My only question is, does he still want to stay in England?

The Greek giants that wants his signture plays in the CL and that?s what this player wants.

Why do you think Arsenal are letting him go?

Old and slow come to mind. How many games did he play for Arsenal last season. Not the way forward and not DM?s usual transfer strategy.

Just lets wait and see who comes in. The best news would be that Bullshit Bill has resigned, pity he is not tied to a contract that the club didn?t have to renew... and then there is Wyness, no don?t start me.

Gilberto would be a fantastic signing for Everton and after all our summer of troubles off the field it would be exactly that... a masterstroke for us and he would be ideal for the Carsley role. Some people think you should stop playing and hang up your boots when you reach 30 but if we can have a balance of experience in that midfield to go with the flair type players pf Arteta and Pienaar it will do us more good than bad.

I always look back to the impact made by Gary McAllister when he went to Liverpool at 36 years old. If you have a class player in there then age doesn't matter, anyway Gliberto is only 31. I don't think there is much chance of it happening though, hasn't he already agreed a move to Panathinaikos? No doubt by the end of the week attention will be back on Darren Fletcher for another over inflated price..

I'm not so sure about Darren Bent either, in my opinion, selling AJ for £10 million and signing Bent just seems like a sideways step. People say Bent would score more goals, but on what grounds do they work that one on? I think AJ ended up with more goals last season than Bent didn't he? Ok, Bent didn't play that much but whenever he did play he looked woefully lacking in confidence, something which AJ suffered with also at stages.

The only things I would put in Bent's favour is that he is only 24 and if it came down to Bent or Milito well the Milito deal would seem to concern me a little bit... Yes he has a great scoring record but the main strength of the player is his aerial ability and you worry that it may go back to the Big Dunc days of lobbing the ball forward at any opportunity, Milito doesn't have any pace either so you would imagine were we had AJ on the break in away matches last season with his pace, we could struggle for that next season and look very pedestrian.

I have mentioned before I think it is such a shame that Jermaine Defoe passed us by in January and for under £10 million also. Defoe may not be international class but the one thing does very well is score goals in the Premier League and add his pace to that then I think we would have had the most natural replacement for Johnson.

As I'm living down south with a lot of Gooners I can tell you their thoughts on Gilberto: Shite! Every game he plays or comes on as a sub he gets the same reaction as Pip in centre mid for us. Yes, he was a decent player, you can't argue with a World Cup winners medal, but judging by comments from my gooner friends, he's past it.

There has to be one turkey every season under Moyes. Gilberto would be his Gravesen Mark 2!

Anyone who wants Bent or Silva needs their head read.

Bent is not a nice person at all.... bad things when he was at Ipswich and I heard he REALLY loves the late-night London scene. Hence the reason why his ex gf dumped him not long after he moved to Charlton.

I met his dad a a youth game years ago and they are both not the sort you want to hang around with. I?ll leave it there.

Gilberto Silva, a great passer??? He must be the worst midfielder in the top 3 (other than Fletcher lol)

I wouldnt mind Silva as a squad player pretty decent player but not sure hes exactly what we?re looking for as at 31 we can hardly bulid for the future with him. I'm more concerned as to why AJ didn't play at all during the weekend?! is it just because Moyes wamted to see the youngsters and there's lots more frendlies to come when the 1st team squad all need to play or is it because he didn't want AJ to get injured cos he's selling him?! I really hope its the 1st scenario!

Mark, got to defend Darren Bent here. He is a good friend of one of my close mates and I have met him a number of times. I have never experienced him to be anything but a top bloke (occasionally surrounded by the odd sheister but which ’celeb’ isn’t?

I don’t want him at GP because I don’t think he poses the threat he did at Charlton and believe his prices is greatly inflated. However, the slating of his character was unnecessary and, in my experience if not yours, wholy inaccurate. Commenting on his Dad from a youth game years ago and tarring Bent with the same brush based on rumour and conjecture is unfair. Stick to facts and opinions on football please mate.

Steve Sweeney, Carsley didn’t have blistering pace and wasn’t exactly a spring chicken, but he did the job and was one of our most consistent and important players. Silva has 4 years on Carsley and if he can stay injury free could turn out to be a great signing.

Don’t think he’ll want to stay in England now though

To say he?s past it overstating the issue - the guys only 31 and in his role pace isn't an issue; he?d be a great buy for us.

Changing the subject slightly, the Echo website are reporting Moyes is ready to sort out his new deal and that he doesn't envisage any problems, now that's got to be good news!!!!!!!! He also says that the swiss rightback is a potential target.

One final point: has anybody thought that Moyes hasn't made any signings yet because he doesn't feel its the right deal for the club? Only once has he got players in early and that was Lescott and AJ, I know he always states he wants them in early but rarely does this happen. I get the feeling he likes to want the player to come to us and not to chase them in any bidding wars with lesser clubs!!!

@Lee Mandaracas-- each to their own mate.

I met him in Ipswich and met his girlfriend at the time as well...this was a couple of years after seeing him play centre forward in a youth game vs Notts Forest (his dad was sitting behind me).

I guess from your post that you?ve known him since he went to London? Maybe he?s grown up alot following the (Kieron Dyer / Titus Bramble esque ) things he was doing when he first ?hit the big time?.

His ex gf was very pretty :)

Incidently the only player who made a big move after leaving Ipswich that didn’t turn my nose up was Richard Wright. Nice guy.

why dont we re-sign Stubbsy and Davey Weir while we?re at it, in fact, if you hang on I?ll get me boots out of the shed? After spending the past 5 years painstakingly reducing the average age of the squad. Do you think DM really wants it to start raising it again?
Gilberto has been class and may still have something to offer, but surely that will be in a league were the pace isnt quite as frantic as the prem.

I personally don’t think the age issue is especially relevant now, particularly considering the present overall squad age.

If Moyes were to slot one or two experienced, top quality players in (eg - Gilberto Silva in for Carsley) that could only be a good thing. The younger lads can only learn from the good example of these type of players. Established first team regulars could also only benefit from having someone with proven, trophy-winning experience around.

Watched the 1986/87 season review dvd the other night and Paul Power was rightly praised after arriving an ’over the hill’ squad player at best and going on to play a major part in that year’s title win.

Other more recent examples are Teddy Sheringham at United and even (dare I mention) Gary McAllister for them lot.

Sorry Tony Part, just reading back through the thread and noticed you’d already thrown McAllister’s name in!

Thinking further on this, the holding role in our system is best suited to either a hugely experienced, calm and assured older head, or some absolutely world-beating, dynamite young midfield monster the likes of which I don’t think we’re likely to find or be able to afford. Wenger seems to have dibs on that particular model! I think Moyes needs to take a gamble on someone, not sure who, perhaps not an especially big name, more an ideal horse for this particular course.

Hang about, what’s Olivier Dacourt up to these days....;-)!!

I think most of you are missing one minor point. Wages, I bet he wouldn’t come cheap, even if he is way past his best. I reckon he can’t hack it in the prem anymore. The games I watched him on telly for Arsenal last season (when he did play ) he looked sluggish and to slow, most of the time he gave the ball away to easily. I wouldn’t have minded him 2 - 3 years ago, because he was a class player. But now, no chance.

People championing the signing of Gilberto just shows how some go purely off name and supposed standing without any knowledge of a player. He?s absolute garbage nowadays and has been well finished for a good 18 months, hence Arsenal waving goodbye despite having nobody else currently to fill that position.

Bent on the other hand is a real class act and I?d love him here.

I can't see why we don't try and pick up Xabi Alonso from Liverpool. It looks like Juve have cooled their interest in him and maybe staying in the area would suit him. He's obviously a quality midfielder with proven Premier League experience and the fact he's best mates with Mikel Arteta could sway him towards us.
