Live telly games

Comments (14)

Maybe I'm taking it a bit over the top with this, but of our five games that will be broadcast live by Sky in the coming months, four are home games. As I am living in the Netherlands it makes it easier to watch these games on the internet so I should be happy about it. But I feel that it will decrease our attendances.

Obviously one of those games is the derby and that will sell out no matter what, but home games against the Barcodes and especially against Fulham and Boro are games where I can imagine people choose to watch it at home and not to watch it from behind a pole in Goodison.

Purely out of curiosity: does anybody know if attendances drop significantly if we play a 'less attractive' opponent and that match is broadcasted live? I know most of you probably don't care but these sort of things keep me pondering over and over again...

Eric

I’ve done a quick comparison with regards to live TV matches and general average attendance overall since the start of the Premier League in terms of whether the average attendance for live matches on Sky are up or down on the overall season average.

1992-93 - 5,000 up caused by the derby match at home.
1993-94 - 6,000 down.
1994-95 - 2,000 up.
1995-96 - Down 1,650
1996-97 - Down 5,240
1997-98 - Down 1,350
1998-99 - Down 5,850
1999-2000 - Up 720
2000-01 - Down 170
2001-02 - Down 170
2002-03 - Down 180
2003-04 - Down 850
2004-05 - Up 350
2005-06 - Up 550
2006-07 - Down 440
2007-08 - Down 500

So basically, attendances are normally lower, but in the last 7 seasons, there hasn’t really been that much of a difference.

Thanks all, especially Steve Flanagan. I guess it doesn’t matter that much then.

Geh, I’m thinking of getting it but I expect to move within the Netherlands in a few months - I think I’ll get it after the move. Do they broadcast literally every PL match??

And Kevin, he asked if he could do some plastering and perhaps paint my ceiling ;)

Hi Erik,

I lived in NL and used UPC before. Under normal circumstances, UPC would show ALL of the premiership games week in, week out, but since they only had 5 channels dedicated to football, there might be once or twice that they might miss out 1-2 games (playing at the same time) in a week or so. However, during my year there, I only had one such experience within a season .. and so absolutely worth it for 20 Euros per month!!

What gets my goat is once again our two biggest home games of the season have been switched to midday kick-offs.
Sky TV really gets me depressed.

I?ve just moved to the Netherlands to Rotterdam on a two-year work placement. The UPC subscription you get - is that the basic or the Royal one? As when I move into my rented apartment I?ll be looking to get a good satellite connection and UPC seem to do an "Internet, TV and Phone" dirt cheap

Funny how we all moan about the ’Sky 4’ and the changes to the fixtures but still keep subscribing! Just do what quite a few of us are now doing. Only go to the pub to watch an Everton game, don’t subscribe at home and avoid all the rest of the games. Break the monopoly and smash the system :0)

UPC now has 8 sports channels, so every prem game is on unles they clash with Dutch, German or Italian games, rarely happens as there?s normally only 5/6 games on a Saturday.

When it does clash you tend to see the games in alphabetical order so you lose West Ham?s home games more often than Arsenal?s etc.

Richard,
I never did subscribe to the overhyped shite, still if less people watched I still don't see how it would recover the situation - there are a million Man U twats out there for every hundred Blues, and as for the kopites...

The only change in the situation will come when the Sky 4 get their way and their own club channels get exclusive rights to show their own games (they already have a channel each while the rest of us are being left behind).

The problem is this will seriously reduce our share of TV money and we will bend over backwards to play whenever they want to play us for a measly 10% or so... this will signal the end of all competitiveness - maybe we?re there already but all I know is you either join em or dissapear -

...as I said - DEPRESSING!
