Joao Moutinho

I have to admit I know very little about this guy. Is he any good?

The thing that does stand out from what I can find on the net is that he is only 5' 07" tall (or short?) I thought Moyes priority was a big lump, a Diop type player. This guy is another 'midget gem' Can Manny and Joao Moutinho play together?

I think a midfield of Cahill, Fernandes and Moutinho would be class against teams outside of the top 4 but against any of them we would need a player that can man-mark and take someone out of the game which none of them can do. Personally a midfield of them 3 with Pienaar and Arteta on the wing would scare any team in the Prem though we would still need a defensive midfielder.

Is Moutinho going to Valencia?

Everton have admitted their interest and apparently Keith Wyness has said that signing Joao Moutinho is a big possibility but we need to agree a fee because Sporting Lisbon are looking for around £16 million but Everton want to structure a deal based on a certain amount upfront and then give them more money through future achievments?

Manny Fernandes wants to sign for Everton on a permanent basis this summer and says that he hopes a deal could be wrapped up soon and that it's just a matter of Valencia dropping their valuation of him and letting him go for a more resonable price.

These two would be great signings if the rumours were true but I agree I think we need to address the defensive midfield position; we really need to bring someone in to take Carsley?s place, someone big and imposing and a decent all-round footballer because I dread to think of Moyesy using Phil Neville there in that position!

Your comment leads me to believe you do not know two things: one, Manny?s height; and two, that they are both Portuguese.

As they are both Portuguese and of similar ages i would imagine that they have already played together at the under-21 level and possibly full international level as both have caps. Also Manny is 6? 0" and not one of the midgets like Cahill, Pienaar and Ossie.

Moutinho had a cracking Euros and would be an amazing buy for us; however, I dare not to dream as I severely doubt we would land him. Plus if no loan was available to buy him, he would cost a lot and we need quality as well as quantity. This year we lack bodies and to buy him would mean only a few more players. We will see...

So what happened to "The Everton Way" of not doing your business in public? A fishy smell lingers over the whole thing.

If we get Moutinho I will eat my hat. Perhaps it’s a good day to bury bad news about Kirkby being called in?

He?s a very classy player. Good on the ball, excellent passer and he?s got the work rate and tenacity to go with it. He lacks height but his determination, attitude and work rate more than makes up for it.

I?d say he?s similar to Paul Scholes. Same build, similar sort of style and the same workrate. He finds pockets and space in midfield and has the ability to open us teams. Anyone would be impressed with him. He?s a very good talent, experienced and a leader over in Portugal, only 21 and he?s captain of Sporting.

I?m expecting people to moan about him only being 5ft 7in but it really doesn?t matter. He?s not a ball winner, he?s a creative box to box midfielder and height isn?t important. The likes of Fabregas and Scholes aren?t 6ft grocks.

Play him next to a ball winner and behind Cahill in a 4-5-1 and he?d be excellent. He?s got Osman energy, constant running and quick feet combined with Fernandes?s passing ability.

He?s a class act really. A signing like this would make people step up and notice that we are an up and coming club. I don?t see why he wouldn?t consider us either. We are an up and coming team, we have a Portuguese connection (Fernandes/Xavier/Valente) and we offer European football.

Teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, Man utd and Arsenal are strong in his position; I doubt they?d be interested. I?d have said Spurs but they?ve already bought Modric and Dos Santos. Maybe Newcastle will be interested; they always are when it comes to our players. The only competition we?ll have is from Spain.

I?d be made up if we signed him. Hopefully we can add M?Bia and Fernandes as well.

Don’t know any timescale and not re-typing it all...

Hope MK puts my views down even if I get slaughtered :)

While yes, we could do with more height throughout the squad, what’s with the obsession with finding some giant lump to stand in front of our defence?!...

Makelele, Marcos Senna, Essien, Gattuso, Mascherano, Lassana Diarra, Flamini, Gago, Nigel de Jong and Renato are all under 5’10" and would walk into most national teams, never mind club XI’s...

I’d like to see this one happening, but won’t be holding my breath...

I was only thinking this weekend about how I still thought that there would be signings this summer as the club were staying nice and quiet.

This looks like a bid with no intention of success just to appease the fans and allow the club to say "look, we tried for the big signings but they just wouldn’t come".

Neville in centre mid awaits. I pray to the good dude that I’m wrong.

Here we go lads, the old youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzF74r_7enw&feature=related

Well had to be done didn't it. Have a look at the goal he scored from the dead ball line.

It's been hinted at in the thread that the bid will be a publicity stunt by the club to excite the fans thereby distracting them from news about Kirkby and which will obviously fail to happen because the club just want to say, ?Look, we did try, honest??

Now, I?m as cynical as anyone else on here but I cannot fathom a reason why the club?s hierarchy would deliberately concoct a plan which they knew would end up with them looking like incompetents and failures. I mean, that?s one meeting I?d have liked to have sat in on just to be the one politely coughing, slowly shaking my head and whistling through my teeth.

What possible mileage would there be for BK, KW and DM in such a scheme? Do we really believe that DM would allow himself to be used in this way? Surely even Bill knows that this would be a very unwise thing to do given the present mood amongst the supporters. Still, you never know?

If we accept that Moyes isn?t gonna drop Captain Marvel to the bench, I?d much rather see him at right back than anywhere else.

I know Hibbert is currently injured, but we have Gosling who can play at right back. Yobo also has experience there earlier in his career.

I know he's young, but John Irving hasn't looked out of place at right back pre-season either.

So we seem to have sufficient cover at RB and I?d much rather see Moyes spend a few extra million on our midfield/strikers rather than at the back. Our defence is one of the strong-points of this squad.

Another publicity stunt by Wyness. If it wasn?t why would he reveal his transfer target? The Ramsey bid was fake as well.
