Squad Numbers
Comments (23)
Just seen the latest squad numbers on the evertonfc.com website and couldn't help but ask a few questions:
- Why has van der meyde still got 7!
- No number 9 - Yakubu said he didn't want number 9 given but would rather earn it. Has he not earned it or has it been held back for a new centre-forward?
- Number 1 also missing - does Howard not want it? Or prefer his usual?
- Arteta given the number 10 is a good sign.
- No number 11!
The website says there are still vacancies at 1 , 9 and 11.... Vacancies!
I couldn't help but feel that the list is seriously lacking a few more names needed to look the part. Moyes has stated that he needs 6.
Squad numbers have long been a good indicator for clubs of what they should expect for the season ahead, but in Everton's I am not so sure. Will Andy VDM be a regular this year? Are we to sign a new centre forward? Am I wasting my 25 minute lunch break?
I won't doubt that we will sign a few players by the season kick off , most likely 3 crackers and 3 squad members. We will have to wait and see.

You have made a post asking people about the squad numbers given. What does it matter about squad numbers? Yakubu not wearing 9, Howard not wearing 1........big deal!!
And to your lunch break question... the answer is yes.
Yes.... erm, to everything.... maybe...
BTW, hope you enjoyed your butties.
Another blunder by Moyes. One of our tactics is to pass to the number 6, even if he’s in a tight situation, and let him sort it out. That’s going to be a disaster this season.
To be honest, it doesn’t matter much to me, or to most fans, or to the players, or the manager etc etc. What it does matter to is the 10 year old with "Arteta 6" on his back, and I actually find it a little offensive for that reason. He’s been here for years too. I’d suggest it was marketing, but it’s only one player and there are several who could have changed to a 1-11 shirt.
The reason Yakubu hasn't been given the number 9 shirt is that he likes big numbers. When he signed, he was asked about the number 9 shirt, but he said that he wanted the number 22.
Hopefully we will see the best of AVDM this season. From what I have seen in pre season, he has played very well, all being against poor opposition. He is the best crosser of the ball at our club, no-one can take that away from him.
Hopefully them vacant numbers will be taken soon by a back up GK, Darren Bent and Moutinho.
No comment from anyone that Jack Rodwell has been given Lee
Carsley?s old No. 26 Does this mean that he is going to feature more for the first time this season?
FFS, they're just numbers!?!?!?
Any kind of real evidence of anything is hard enough to come by at this time of year that the squad number thing actually counts as something. Maybe this snippet might really mean that Andy vdM?s problems are behind him and we get the class player in the squad that we would have had to pay for next season anyway.
And the kids around here with their Barcelona Ronaldhino shirts have a bigger problem than Arteta fans who have seen him do what he said he would do - stay with us to work on greater success.
10 is a typical play maker number. Arteta is a play maker therefore the number 10 shirt suits him.
Arteta got 10 because I reckon Moyes wanted to give Jags a lower number.
6 being the lowest that could be changed and with 9,10 and 11 free it made sense to ask Arteta to pick one of them. or simply just give him one.
Either way, none of it matters.
I am gutted!! I recently bought a Spanish top with ARTETA 6 on the back in readiness for his call up to the Spanish team (Which should have happened way before now!) My top now means nothing. DOH!!!
The only numbers we should be looking at are that we only have 18 outfield players (including Rodwell and Gosling). We desperately need 5 or 6 more players in!
Scott - as I was watching the eurocup games I was very pleased that our man was well out of it. If he went in fully fit there was a good chance he would have come back injured or tapped up or both. It will be interesting to see if the tournament has an "unsettling" effect on RS Torres.
What's wrong with the players actually on the pitch wearing jerseys numbered from 1-11. Inside right and inside left in a five man forward line is the way to go !! None of this 4-5-1, 4-3-3 nonsense :0)
If we want to be hyper conspirasorial (made up word, I think) about it, you could think that Arteta is one of the more popular players and if you pay by letters and digits, then it is an extra digit for the two numbers and could make a quid more for every shirt sold from now.
Maybe in the most un-Everton like way possible, they might have actually done the fans a small favour?!
Working off the assumption that the new kit should have been released a couple of weeks ago, I guess the club would have done a sizeable trade in Arteta #6 shirts. There’s nothing like buying your kid a new shirt with name & number on it and within two weeks it being made redundant cos their hero has changed shirt number.
I just wanna buy a Fernandes top!
Make it possible MOYSEY!! :)
And hopefully he sticks with that number (lol)
I need to let my Cahill top have a bit of a rest.
I reckon the player should keep the squad number he was given from day one till he leaves. Another new shirt very similar to the previous one. Bring back the Lineker shirt.
Moving Arteta to 10 means we won’t be getting any new playmakers. The income from the extra digit would do our club wonders though, as there’s only 6 letters in Arteta.
Well I would love to see a Number 9 at the club, any right centre forward should jump at the Number 9 shirt ? just look at who they follow.
No one’s picked up on the fact that Rodwell has vacated the no. 37 shirt preferred by manuel fernandes. Coincidence?
Yakubu,... I thought he said he would score as many goals as his shirt number?
Arteta ging nowhere if he has the No 10 shirt.
Didn’t Fernandes play last season in the number 23, previous season 37?
Maybe I was intoxicated and got it wrong?
Steve Ferns, Manny was offered the vacant number 10 but opted to ’stay’ with the 37, just before he flew off to Valencia. I would believe he knew at the time that he wasn’t going to stay and therefore saved the club the grief of any announcements and having kids (like some here) buying up a jersey with Manny 10. Thought that was a honest gesture from a man of integrity. See I remember these things.
Hope Jags can live up to rhino’s jersey though.
