Moutinho... or Arshavin?

Comments (22)

Taken from the BBC website:

Zenit St Petersburg claim Tottenham have enquired about Russia star Andrei Arshavin and are ready to pay £15.9m, but Manchester City have not expressed an interest.

I read only this morning that Everton have been talking up an £18 million move for a little Portuguese wizard by the name of Moutinho.

Weren't we the ones that first noticed his undoubted talent and if we do have £18 million to spend on Moutinho, should we not at least test the water with a move for Arshavin?

How about we don’t get either one? Wyness is full of shit. I’ll believe it when i see it.

Paper talk.

a) Moyes would not spend that type of money on one player.

b) They are not worth that type of money.

c) We don’t have that type of money.

Moyes has already stated that he feels we would need to break our transfer record this summer. That said and the fact that he brought in a new NO:2 and is negotiating a new contract, it would appear that we are in the market for these type of players.
However it?s rare that any club pays £18 million up front, more likely to be £10-12 million plus various add-ons relating to the club been successful and the player contributing to the success.

I think, of the two, Moutinho is by far the more sensible deal as he has youth on his side and would command a similar return on his fee. Arshavin, wouldn?t, as he will soon be the wrong side of 30.

I was thinking exactly the same thing!
I too doubt the Moutinho deal will ever come through though. Sporting simply don?t want to sell.
I would love to see Arshavin at Everton like everyone else but the reality is it's more likely he will end up in London.

Some of the Spanish papers still have Arshavin going to Barcelona - the "dream" he has always had.

I don?t know what we can or can?t afford, but now that Moyes?s own wages are much improved maybe he would be happier about having big earners in his team.

David Lynch, when does any club ever want to sell its best players?

The club never said that they wouldn’t sell, they just said there was no reason to do so. I.e. they aren’t broke. By saying this, it makes their bartering position stronger when a club steps in and says they want a player.

If we want to improve as a side we need to be aiming for these type of players. Mountinho would be an excellent signing and looks like a great prospect.

Moutinho by a mile. Younger, has more potential, his style is more suited to the League and he’s a centre midfielder. He’s also versatile and can play right across the midfield. His workrate and leadership skills would also be plusses.

Moutinho for me.

Does anyone else think Steed Malbranque would have been a useful addition to our squad? Looks like he’s off to Sunderland but it doesn’t say how much as they are taking half of the Spurs reserve team aswell! He’s only 28 and gets his fair share of goals from midfield. I’ve seen him play right/left/centre for Spurs and Fulham. I thought he would have been a good backup player to have availalble?

Anyone who seriously believes Moyes would spend nearly all his budget on one player needs his head felt. There's no way either of them will come

For me, it should be Fernandes, Bent and possibly Malbranque.

Terry Downes,

I don?t see why he wouldn?t come. We have alot of positive things going for us. We are an up and coming club, we have a good squad of players, we offer European football, we play in the best League in the world and we have Portuguese connections (Fernandes/Nuno/Xavier). Lots of reasons to join a team like Everton.

He?d also be guaranteed first team football and would be top dog here. We?d also be paying him alot more than he?s getting at Sporting. He?d be getting around 50 grand a week here.

Who would be competing with us? Chelsea and Barcelona have ruled themselves out so they wouldn?t. Man utd, Liverpool and Arsenal all have 4/5 quality players in his position. He wouldn?t be guaranteed a place at any of the clubs mentioned, Arsenal maybe but he?d only be Fabregas?s understudy.

How do we know what the budget is? Personally I feel we?ve got £25-30 million, I always have thought that and stand by my word. Moutinho (£16-18 million), Fernandes (£6 million/Loan) and M?Bia (£4 million). That?s all we need for me, plus one or two loans for backup positions like centre half and keeper. I?d rather have quality than quantity and I?m sure Moyes would as well. He?s said many times he needs a higher quality player and Moutinho or someone else could be that man. We could get 5 players in for £25-30 million.

I think Evertonians need to be a bit more confident of their club. Moutinho may well stay at Sporting but I don?t see any reason why we wouldn?t want to join us. We are an excellent up-and-coming club.

Why would Moutinho or Arshavin want to play in a stadium that is falling down?? They certainly would want to avoid the legendary run-down area that Peter Kilfoyle has highlighted :0)

What? Honesty and positivity pills? I feel what he said was just about correct, especially if (fingers crossed) Kirkby gets called in we could have about £30M to spend.

Connor spells out just some of the good things about our Club and there’s many more besides.

The trouble is that they all relate to on the pitch or charitable activities. The £30m he talks about would come from astute marketing and business operations and that’s where I get worried. The news today of Everton even considering letting LFC fans use Goodison for corporate hospitality is incredible. What else? Let them in to watch Liverpool Man Utd on big screens at Goodison??? No wonder our ’brand’ is in danger of getting swamped. A few quid from the Redshite it would have been, but total loss of face to an incalculable level.

A bit like finding your wife having it away with your neighbour, but letting them use your bed for a few quid because his is uncomfortable!

Anyway, Connor - I like your sentiments, I just hope you are right! :)

Connor Roherer.

We are an excellent up and coming TEAM. As a club we are already well established but facing an uncertain future due to the poor leadership by Kenwright and his attack pig Wyness.

"£25 - £30 Million" you're having a Turkish there. We only turned over £52 million last season and made no profit and we?ve already borrowed against this season's Sky money. Good job you haven?t got Bully?s job or we?d be deeper in the shite than we already are.

No Craig, because the money we would borrow for Kirkby is secured by the value of the stadium. If we don’t get the stadium, the bank won’t lend us the money. Same thing if you were applying for a 100K mortgage and a 10 grand loan for a car. If you don’t buy the house, the bank won’t let you use the 100K for a more expensive car as it would become an unsecured loan

Connor, yet again you can't resist predicting the future without a shred of proof. What?s the point in posting such crap. As I asked you last week, do you possess a sixth sense or something? Last week you confidently predicted we would purchase 5 players; today you're telling the world we will have £30M to spend.

Steve Ryan, I?d like you read my posts before you spout your mouth off. There?s no point commenting on my posts if you?re not going to read them.

?Last week you confidently predicted we would purchase 5 players; today you?re telling the world we will have $30 to spend. Either back your claims up with tangible proof or please refrain from hogging the board with your pointless lengthy emails.?

What?s wrong with predicting we are going to sign 4/5 players? I?m confident we will and that?s my opinion, nothing wrong with that. Moyes has said himself he wants 5 players in and I?m confident he will get them.

Again I?m giving my opinion on the money we will have to spend. Is that not allowed? Because it had a bit of optimism and positivity you?re going to shoot it down. It?s not like I?m saying we definatly have 30 million but that is what I think we?ll get. We spend 20-23 million last summer on Pienaar, Yakubu, Baines and Jagielka; I feel this season it?ll be a similar budget or even more. Again if I?m wrong I?m wrong, we?ll have to wait and see.

Personal insults get you nowhere my friend. I?m giving my opinion, and I try to contribute to this website as much as possible. If you don?t like my posts then don?t reply to them.

And just to add, Connor, that possibility of £10m+ incoming for the sale of AJ looks stronger this Wednesday morning, so a £30m kitty shouldn’t be out of the questiion - or should that be £40m now?

Like you, I believe that Moyes will bring the squad up to strength - he will not have forgotten what happened towards the end of last year’s extended season. But 4 or 5 players doesn’t mean that number of household names. DM played a blinder in getting Pienaar on the books, and I’d bet he’d love to do something similar with another bargain find or two.
