Can someone please explain

Comments (14)

I was talking today to two friends who are Everton supporters. One said that he would never set foot in Kirkby. The other gave a detailed argument as to why Kirkby was the only way that Everton had any future. I am opposed to Kirkby and my reasons are mainly sentimental.

Unfortunately I was unable to respond to my pro-Kirby mate as, quite frankly, I don't know what I'm talking about. On this site I have read about Kilfoyle, about Kirkby being called in(?) about the lies of KW and BK, about Docklands, about KEIOC(?) about 10,000 Evertonians not going to Kirkby. To my shame I really don't know what most of this means.

Is there someone who could come onto ToffeeWeb and succinctly, without kicking off another damaging row, explain the facts? Give the pros and cons of the move and let this rather slow Evertonian make a decision based on the head rather than the heart.

In my on defence this serious topic doesn't seem to get any publicity in the national press and it certainly gets none over here. I've been an Evertonian for forty years and have had some wonderful days in GP but I'm willing to listen to the facts.

Sweet, Andy.. nice try. Unfortunately, the so-called "facts" differ diametrically depending on which side of the Yes-No divide you stand. There is a gapping void between them and no-one is all that willing to try and stand above it... although I could be wrong.

What the hell... we've all been seriously disctracted from the minutia surrounding Destination Kirkby for at least a day or three, what with the Johnson / Moutinho / Wyness triple saga... And I kinda miss them big long messages from Tom and Neil... So yes, let's get back to the real business of the Great DK Debate ... before football once again intervenes in a couple of hours...

Here?s a go for yer:
  • A fact, Kirkby was the cheapest option for Everton to bag a new stadium.
  • Aonther fact, although a majority voted in favour of the move....the NO voters were only 40% of those voting..... that's a pretty close split. (but I always respect the majority).
  • Fact, I don't think anyone gives a flying fuck about us... ie LCC.
  • Fact, Goodison isn't about to collapse.
  • Fact, we are broke.
  • Fact, we need to do something.
Does that help? I don't think I've shown any bias there!!

Bob, as far as I can tell you have posted before as "Ian Martin". Please use one name only and stick to it. Thanks.

Fact - Kirkby is not in Liverpool and for me - that?s me - is all that matters.

Fact - Stadium design looks poor - to me.

Fact. The Kings dock project would have had us at the forefront of Liverpool, right in your face and some of us cant get past that even now but something needs to be done.

Heres a few that I consider facts

1 Theres limited large enough singlely avaliable owned private sites in Liverpool City, Peel holdings own the biggest private land portfolio but don?t want a stadium. Hence LFC building on a public park and the loop scheme being proposed as it is owned by a large single landowner (bestway)

2 Buliding football stadiums is difficult and expensive to fund (see LFC), a club like EFC need assistance from another development to fund a wholly new stadium

3 The Kirkby development has been rushed and is why it is so poorly designed and thoughout out, major developments of similar values (400m+) normally take longer to develop.

4 EFC has sat on their hands and never came up with a long-term plan for redeveloping goodison making it more difficult and expensive as each year passes.

5 The local government structure in Merseyside (and the UK) isn?t setup to support the private sector investment needed (e.g new stadiums) with transport provision, supported development as their policies work on small boundaries. councils end up fighting with each other rather than support each other achieving greater benefits.

Andy, there are many other threads that can give you a whole multitude of opinions on this matter. You would be best to read the earlier ones before all the, I dare say, hatred started between the two differing factions

Both Manure and Villa have managed to redevelop their stadia by employing a long term policy. Even Newcastle have managed this.
Unfortunately our present board of directors do not seem to look at the long term and prefer short term fixes.

Andy, what’s this Kirkby place that you’re talking about ? Are we moving or something ? I’ve only just got my head around 4-4-2 rather than 2-3-5 and that the first division (where we won league titles) is now what was the old third division - although I hear that it was the new second division for a while but that was after the old second division become the first division before it became the Championship :0)

Fair comments and questions BUT...why are we even talking about a new/old stadium. If we don't have a decent team no one will go anyway. I'm much more concerned with the dire state of the miniscule squad we have... the total lack of competition in many places and the long standing injuries.

If Vaughn carries on the way he did in Chicago, he will soon be injured again. DM should be here sorting out the transfer mess we are in... the clock is ticking and the days are passing. Soon the season will start and we are at present totally unprepared. I reckon the powers that be including DM concentrate on producing a bigger squad with at least one top player (Moutinho) then perhaps we can slowly blood our youngsters and save spending so much in future.

Kirkby or GP arguing is detrimental and negative... we all are supposed to be EFC supporters of the FOOTBALL team..at least that's what I am. I will watch a good Everton team anywhere. I've been travelling from Huyton, Ellesmere Port and now Wrexham for the past 50 years to Goodison Park and let's face it, nostalgia ain?t what it used to be....COYB

What are talking about Trevor, we?ve has diabolical teams well supported in the last TEN years. Everton FC is from the city of Liverpool. This is non-negotiable. Otherwise we may as well move to, say, Wigan. Then we could change our name and our kit, doesn?t matter as long as the team is alright.
IT DOES MATTER!
