Guardian Season Preview

Comments (30)

Its Everton's turn to be profiled now, and the author sums us up pretty well: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/aug/06/everton.premierleague

We all know this stuff already, but its refreshing to see it picked up in the national press. The last paragraph in particular is a strong one:

"There really is little point moaning about the lack of reliable back-up in goal, defence or attack so long as Everton don't even have a starting midfield. No wonder Moyes is miffed. Just how did a team that qualified for the Champions League in 2005 and has finished fifth and sixth in the last two seasons get into a situation whereby it now seems they must fill a far-off new stadium before being able to adequately fill their team sheet?"

I must admit the article is absolutely spot on. How we have let ourselves in to this position is bemusing, however we have always kept going and recently we have done more than exceed expectations so I am a bit worried and mad that theres no signings but I am sure we will be a top 6 team again this season. Because we are Everton.

It is at a times that I can either express bitter frustration or wisely plead for us all to embrace a sense of footballing perspective .......

........or just sit back, appreciate the tides of time and thank my god I was born a born a catholic, slightly tubby, sometimes insecure, beer loving Everton Fan.

Thanks. Bloody thanks !

I have been dreading the Guardian article, looking round for MORE teams starting with a C or a D. Aren?t Darlington in the Prem yet?

It is biting, accurate and one hell of a wake-up call to me. I?ve been trying to be relaxed about not YET having signed anyone. We have four midfielders - VdM does not count. Moyes has often shown that centre mid and goal are the positions he wants to fill before any others. He has Howard and ... that?s it. He?s not too confident of Ruddy opr Turner and we are bereft of the Carsley/Sean Davis/Scott Parker and all the others he?s previously gone in for. So that is why he hasn?t signed a deal yet. Oh my God! I?ve woken up.

The language among those at the top at Everton is conflict. Moyes wants five or six and not second best. Is that why we chase megabucks Moutinho and not for a few million less, Fernandes, while the moneymen lounge on a yacht, bunk off to Mallorca or talk wistfully on Skysports as we are the only team not to have recruited a soul.

I?m off for a drink. sob!

Connie Francis

The majority of posts and articles on this site, and now in the national press, reflect the current chaotic, fractured and ill equipped state of Everton Football Club.

I have a feeling that the majority of fans, plus the management and possibly half the team would benefit from any news you may have that would give us reason to be upbeat because the facts don?t lie.

For me that article was not over critical. It was based on the cold facts and no amount of blind faith will take us through a sixty game season if we haven?t got enough players to see us through August.

IMWT but very little else...

An excellent and sadly accurate article - give or take the odd omission. I think 8th might be pushing it at this rate!

This summer’s chaos will make very interesting reading - if the facts ever come out.

I cling to the hope that at least a few rabbits will be pulled out of the hat somehow before the transfer window ends, but even then I fear we might well be at a watershed moment and in the next few years we’ll be looking at 2005-08 as our glory days!

Get in there, the first bit of good news all summer. Hopefully that will now mean the end of the line for second rate ’Tesco dome’. Trust me, we may not see the benefits immediately but in 10 years time we will all be breathing a collective sigh of relief that we got out of jail with this one.

We were in a much worse situation in the 2004 season when we finished 17th and then lost our 2 best players Rooney and Gravesen, and where did we finish the following season when all had us for going down..? 4th. Yes we were lucky with injuries, but this team is of a much better quality.

Moyes nearly always buys his players late on at bargain prices so he doesnt have to pay out the big wages untill as late as possible. Hes just playing the waiting game because hes a minge bag. Have faith, in Moyes we trust.

A very depressing read. Guardian is also suggesting that our muppet of a chairman has allowed Fulham to only pay £5.5m up front for Johnson, the rest on the drip. I’d rather have had him back than piss ball around like this. Another nice touch Bill

However, there is one ray of light in the gloomiest pre-season I have known for years - Kirkby has been called in - amen to that

Thank God it’s been called in! Let’s hope DK is now over. Can’t wait for Saturdays game at my beloved Goodison Park.

For the first time in months I have a smile on my face! Will be celebrating in the Brick before and after the match on Saturday.
Let’s keep the pressure up and get rid of Kenwright

Proper mixed feelings about DK and fearing our beloved club is in meltdown.

No Money
No Stadium
No Fresh Investment
No Signings

Kenwright seems oblivious to it saying "watch this space" with a stupid smirk, you ain?t got a bean mate.

Just waiting for our 15 point deduction and administrators to be called in.

Moyes should wake up and take the No 2 job at United while he is still held in high regard by his peers, and not suffer the embarrassment of Kenwright and co.

Realise I?ll get stick for this post but don?t care anymore.

I guess only time will tell whether this is good or bad, there's very little information at the moment as to what will happen - even the club don't know what's going to happen now so what chance have we got?

Whether this makes a difference to our financial state is up for debate, does it now mean that potential investors will back off? I would suggest that in the short-term it?ll make no difference at all; we still don't have much money to pay for players and only have the same funds availalble that we always had ? some but not much.

Why all the doom and gloom? Yes we have lost Carsley but we have gained Cahill and a fit Arteta! We have kids coming through. Yes we all know we need more players but we should still be up there given the right attitude by players, club staff, and FANS!

Do anyone of you really think Phillip Green or Robert Earl are going to underwrite any more debt with their return on investment now gone up in smoke??

I?d now be highly surprised if Moyes signs his contract and doesnt walk before the season is out. Who are are going to buy now? Marcus Bent??

Celebration times indeed. NOT.

John, if I remember rightly, we were told by the club, that DK being called in won?t have any effect on transfer money. And why would Moyes walk? As I said, his transfer money has always been there, so it doesn?t effect him. The funny thing is, when we don?t buy anyone, the club will probalby bullshit us again, by saying transfer money was reliant on Kirkby not being called in.
I for one, can?t wait for the spin to begin from Ross and BK. They will probably blame the No - voters for it being called in.
Long live KEIOC.

As a company director myself, it's a sad day for Everton... it will take years for any potential planning to take place for any potential move away from Goodison, it has taken nearly 2 years to get to this stage. I don?t feel like celebrating either, not with the "No" voters as any potential investment will now disappear. It?s a sad day for Everton and the future financially for Everton as a business.

Anyone who declares this scurrilous article as spot on obviously passed over the following sentence, and I quote:

"Mikel Arteta ... an unerring deliverer from the set-pieces that Everton exploit so well."

Granted Mikel has long been carrying niggling injuries, but I canna? recall our last goal from a set piece, or indeed the ball getting past the first man.

Shaun Kinnair, I?m also a company director and from my perspective I would say DK had no business plan. It alienated a significant proportion of it?s client base and had the poorest proposed access of any EPL stadium and little or no extra revenue stream capabilities from the original proposal. If I took that sort of business plan to my bank my ears would still be ringing from the laughter and rubbing my backside from the size nine put in it as I was "shown the door".

I notice Alan Smith has been left out of the Newcastle squad for tonights game against PSV, relevant perhaps?

£9m up front for AJ is great business, especially if it rises to anywhere near £13m - we’ve ripped them right off!
