Charm Offensive needed?

Comments (17)

So, according to the Liverpool Post, a report from Everton`s lawyers will determine whether the club press ahead with DK or whether it gets `filed under bin` with King`s Dock. Depending who you listen to, Everton`s proposed stadium had everything or nothing to do with Minister Blears kicking the scheme into the long grass but now the Board must make a quick decision whether or not to go for broke with their Kirkby dream.

From the early soundbites, particularly those emanating from Knowsley MDC and Tesco, the likelihood is that ALL THREE partners`will press ahead. Tesco will not wish to lose such a vital element in their application as the new stadium whilst without the retailer the club has made ir clear it has no means to fund ANY move or re-development of Goodison Park.

From all I have read, the main reason for the Minister`s decision appears to focus on the sheer size of the scheme and its impact on the whole region. I suspect that she has called for an inquiry because of the outcry from neighbouring authorities ? particularly Liverpool. If this is the case and the club decides to press ahead (which I think is inevitable), the Board will need to begin an urgent charm offensive on both their local council AND THEIR OWN SUPPORTERS. They cannot afford to continue to be seen as at war with local politicians AND half their own following.

It hurts me to say it but the noises coming from EVERYONE at Goodison over the` period of waiting` varied from arrogance to arrant nonsense and not only alienated local councillors but a large number of those who had VOTED IN FAVOUR of the move.

If this move is to have any chance of becoming reality via a Public Inquiry, somebody (Acting CEO or the so-called Head of Media Relations) had better get the club`s act together pretty quickly. Their task is to win the hearts and minds of those who see Kirkby as a move in the wrong direction. They could make a start by becoming open and honest and providing us with real facts about the club`s finances and their projections for the years ahead. They could address the issues of tranport in relation to the proposed stadium as well as our worries that it will be a second class home not worthy of a great club.

In short, they could make a start by convincing me!

Why the fuck are the lawyers investigating the legality of the Kirkby move now!!! Shouldn't this have been done before planning permission was even tendered to KCC?? It sounds like someone hasn't been doing their homework.

This makes me angry!

Brian, what in gods name are you talking about. All the lawyers are doing in giving a view on whether there is a reasonable chance of the inquiry finding in favour of the development!

What do you want the board to do, flip a coin, to decide whether they spend the next year or two spending money on lawyers and being hamstrung with regard to finding a new option!

Here's an example of the Charm Offensive: This is an email I sent to the club out of frustration and included is the quick (and curt) response I received from Ian Ross.
I have been an Everton fan for 27 years and I have to say that never in my time of following us have we missed an opportunity to progress and catch the teams above us.

Every year I sit and watch as Tottenham/Newcastle and now even West Ham spend Millions more than us despite lower league finishes. I am a very positive Everton fan that suscribes to efc tv and checks teamtalk/toffeeweb/liverpool echo daily for news. Im ashamed by our lack of activity in the transfer market. I pay good money to watch and follow my team. We have sold Carsley, McFadden and now Johnson from a thin sqaud and replaced them with nothing, In the managers own words " even if we sign players its unlikely they will be fit for the new season".

What is going on at Everton, the club deny that the stadium situation has anything to do with potential transfer activity however anybody in business can read between the lines. Its time to be honest and if we have no funds say so, if we do lets go for it and make that step. We have THE best manager outside of ferguson and Wenger so why not let him take us there?

In Moyes we trust, Lets hope the board back him.

P.s. this is the fourth time in a year I have written to Everton and im yet to receive a response.

Regards

Fraser O'Neil
The response I received was. "Morning,
Well, I don't know where your previous emails were sent to - because I, for one, always reply.

The stadium is in no way linked to transfer market activity....as we made clear last week, the manager has had funds at his disposal since the end of last season... and, yes, we will sign new players.

Enjoy the season,

Ian.

Seems strange that he would add that bit about Alan Smith at the end doesn’t it.

Fraser

What response did you expect?

Do you really think that the employees of the club have time to sit down and write pages and pages back to individuals who are a bit pissed off that we haven?t done what they want?

After that rant you should count yourself lucky you got any response at all.

And just out of interest why when anyone has any kind of a gripe with the club do they feel the need to write a letter to this website. Everton TV, megastore, ticket office - Do the people who complain actually get in touch with Everton to try and resolve their issue first.

I normally do it that way and they are excellent at getting things sorted. Really - you should trust them now and again.

Now I know Rossy comes in for a fair bit of stick... mainly because he seems to have been playing the ’opposite answers’ game for the past few years... but look at it this way.

If you wrote to the head of Media Relations (note, not Customer Relations, but Media) of anywhere you shop, do you think you would get:

a) a personal response
b) a stock response from some menial customer services bod
c) no response at all

I’m guessing with most organisations, you’d be looking at B or C. This is before you factor in the abuse and threats that Mr Ross has received from his loyal customers over the summer period.

Quite frankly, as much as I have come not to believe the first thing he says, I have to take my hat off to him for having the good grace to respond to pretty much every individual rant that lands on his Blackberry when he would be perfectly within his rights to blank them or forward them on, en masse for a stock ’insert name here’ response

Please help me those of you who know about such things. Is it not in the interests of KMBC and Tesco to keep Everton inside the tent...... thereby continuing Everton's inability to explore other options for maybe a year or more?

What feature of the DK package is likely to change sufficiently to convince No-voters to change their minds? If it is just more flannel.... forget it!

Half the supporters?? what world do the No voters live in? Most people voted yes, most I speak to support the move (for varying reasons and being realists not fantasists)...
The charm offensive should be from LCC I would think, and and all those who voted NO should get off their collective arses and start on the council.. LCC have known for years EFC needed help, and all they do is put obstacles in their way.. So instead of slagging the board and everything Everton, switch your bile to LCC, you never know, it may work!!

2 points that I picked up on in the Post’s article...

1) It states that "It is understood that if the club presses ahead with the Kirkby stadium plan, now expected to be delayed by 12 to 18 months, an exclusivity agreement with Tesco will preclude Everton from drawing up alternative Plan B proposals." errr...are we actually STILL under this agreement??!! I thought it stopped a while back. How the hell can the club use the fact that they claim that they have had no other offers from other parties when they woouldn’t be able to speak to them anyway!

2) Also, the Tesco spokeman claims that "?This project would.......deliver world- class facilities for Everton". Errr....that’s not what it said in the planning application now is it. I seem to remember reading something along the lines of "mid-range".

It pisses me off when people move the goal posts when trying to lie their way into getting what they want.

Looks like the ’exclusivity agreement’ (if it ever really existed) is no longer applicable as Everton have challenged LCC to come up with a viable alternative to the Kirkby deal.

If Sir Terry (Everton fan blah blah blah) thinks Tesco will get the thumbs up without EFC he’ll drop us like a hot brick. If he reckons he needs us on board then so be it. This is primarily about a retail development not a football stadium, world-class, middle-range whatever. However, it begs the question, who’s going to shell out for costs, inflated price of building materials etc. If I were running either EFC or Tesco, I’d want to see a few heads rolling after this fiasco. If I could see this coming months ago why couldn’t these so-called fucking consultants. legal teams etc?

Kings Dock was a great idea at the wrong time.. we had even less money then than we do now. Ergo we sold Rooney!! The £30m may as well have been £300m. Kings Dock was offered to Liverpool Football Club first, we only got a sniff at it after they?d turned it down stating it was to small for them and they envisaged major traffic problems. Kings Dock traffic flow can?t handle the 10k arena now!!

Stanley Park... Everton asked and were told don?t bother asking, no one is allowed to build as it was public open space and had a covenant stopping any building within the park., and the site was always earmarked for Liverpool FC...

Public Money... is that the same public money going into the Anfield regeneration area therefore helping LFC instead of into the Walton regeneration area therefore no help for EFC..
