What's wrong with Walton Hall Park?
Comments (22)
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with Walton Hall Park as a site for the new ground? If Liverpool have got Stanley Park why can't we have Walton? Is it something to do with the land being left to the people of Liverpool by somebody long dead... and was that not the case with Stanley Park???

Basically, there is a general ban on building on public parks. This is in everyone’s best interest. As you point out, this law does not apply to Liverpool FC. There are a number of other laws and regulations for which this also seems to be the case e.g. offside, penalty awards, sending offs, entry to Champions League etc.
There’s nothing wrong with Walton Hall Park and there is no ancient covenant stopping anyone building on it. In the KEIOC survey it was the second most popular option after Goodison redevelopment yet KEIOC never promote it or say anything about it - why’s that? Anyone from KEIOC care to explain? Dont give me the Bradley line of its not right to build on parks, Bradley and his cronies allowed the RS to do so and its not as if we cant give GP to the city as open space in exchange. Walton Hall Park would be ideal, its big (unlike the loop) close to Goodison (unlike the loop) and still in Walton...er unlike the loop too!
There is nothing wrong with Walton Hall Park as a location and the loss of part of it would have a fraction of the impact of the destruction of Stanley Park by LFC. The issue with Walton Hall Park is that there is no developer ready to pay to build a stadium, which was the primary, indeed the only, advantage of Kirkby.
Liverpool had to justify the decision by spending millions on redeveloping the park, combined with a large regeneration of the general area.
Is that possible on Walton Hall Park?
If we managed to build a 50,000 stadium at the bottom of Scottie Rd, RS would be besides themselves with jealousy, why do you suppose that would be ?
Corporate hospitality - so dear to the pro-kirkby voters heart -would be infinately more attractive in a stadium a couple of minutes walk from the shops, bars restaurants of a vibrant city center
A highly reputable stadium design company say it very definitely CAN be done
Why do people who know absolutely nothing about stadium design ignorantly dismiss it ?
EFC should be shouting from the rooftops WE ARE interested in this site, any potential investors/ enablers will be given their opportunity
We all know we cant go it alone and if we fail to attract the neccesary backing, we can put the Loop to bed , for good. but FFS lets give it a shot
This could be our one chance at showing the world, that there may be TWO clubs in this city, but there is only one peoples club and we live right in the very heart of it, to let it slip simply as a result of the pathetic "cant be done" attitude thats so far greeted this proposal it would be criminal
Correct me if i am wrong but i am totally confused about this. The only reason why Everton wanted the Kirby move is Because it was backed with alot of cash by Tesco..All the other places we could move to will not be backed by other companies. Are they? Which i got the impression we couldnt do this alone.I just think LCC will help us redevelope Goodison.
Liverpool got the go ahead for Stanley Park under the last council.
This council have a policy of not building on pubnlic parks - Warren Bradleys words were "two wrongs do not make one right".
Besides, how do we finance 200m to build this even if tey gave us the land for free (-which they wont)?
It’s all down to money, we need a partner who will effectively give us 150 million of help....ie roads, builders etc etc......we haven’t got the cash!
Sorry Dave Wilson - our one chance to show the world that there are two clubs in this city (L word is never mentioned) isn’t building a ground on Scottie Road. It comes every week on the field of play.
It must be a very in-city thing to think that a Scotland Road venue would somehow represent a step up in the world. Close to your local is it?
Walton Hall park would be great and at one stage I remeber reading that Sainsbury’s would be interested. What, iof any details there are on that, I don’t know; maybe someone else can let us know.
I think the Loop has possibilities and, hopefully, more details of that can come out, if there are any.
I think Goodison Park has potential for development, how good and how much development, I dont know but I like the look of the working drawings of Tom and Trevor.
I think what is different now, is that Everton Football Club might now get into meaningful talks with any interested parties.
I don’t see why KEIOC should be held to account,in fact without them the club would still be tied to an exclusivity agreement with Knowsley and Tesco.
Now, it looks like all options will be looked at in detail, which in my humble opinion is a big step forward.
Thanks for the help so basically this council wont let us but i am sure that a bit of pressure from the club and us could change that then there is the money but apart from kirkby (that looks dead) we would have to find the money ourselves anyway so that leaves the dreaded ground share dont bite my head off but a 50/50 share would not be as bad as we all think look at the milan clubs but even that looks to late so what now.
P.S. Well said Dave Wilson, totally agree.
Grahame, Liverpool aren’t spending loads on Stanley Park, the European Community are and the developmentis being funded by the housing corporation. They will contribute but the vast bulk of development in all the empty streets around Anfield, and the Park, is coming from public funds.
Keith
Your trying to put the cart before the horse
Its not quite as simple as just "doing it on the pitch"
I think we’ll all agree that the club needs to generate a lot more money if we are ever going to consistantly compete on a level playing field with Liverpool.
Oops I said the L word ! ! ! but I’m proud to have been born in Liverpool, so if you dont mind, I wont subscribe to your idiotic little notion that we must’nt say the name of our city
thanks anyway though.
I was looking for an example of the ignorance that surrounds the loop proposal, you provided me with a perfect one
Could we not have like a share option on a new ground in Walton Hall Park and we could buy asmuch or as little as we wanted. I think it would be a very good option; does anybody else think we could raise a lot this way?
I know, let the RS build a new stadium on Stanley Park, let Everton build one on Walton Hall Park, let's build a Speedway track on Sefton Park... oh and there's plenty of room on Wavetree Park for a Greyhond track. How about a new bowling alley and Cinema on Newsham Park? Fuck it, let's just build on every piece of Greenery in Liverpool... Get my drift guys???? It just won't happen and please don't say the council let Liverpool do it FFS. LFC are probably the biggest tourist attraction in the city and fill every hotel room twice a week 9 months of the year. We can't fill Goodison once a fortnight so go figure.
I?m not from Liverpool, and rarely go, but to build on a park left to the people, to benefit less than half the people is just wrong. Leave the parks be... unless Anfield then becomes a park but where?s the cash in that?
Some weird notions about Parks being left by people for the downtrodden masses. I think that you will find that Stanley Park was paid for by the people of Liverpool (that is the City not the Club)!
Peter Rogers, the LFC board were very clever with Stanley Park. The crux of their success, I believe, was down to the excellent relationship Rick Parry built with then LCC chief David Henshaw. Parry also had the vision to befriend other influential groups such as Liverpool Vision - which, I believe, he joined in a volunteer/advisory capacity.
They got around the green space issue by proposing to build the stadium on the site of the car park (not green space) and the part that encroached on the adjacent ?green space? football pitches was sold to LCC by offsetting the loss of this space by ?donating? the old Anfield stadium space and upgrading other parts of the park ?not suitable for use?. (The car park space was actually initially given leasehold to Everton as it was a requirement of being a World Cup Venue in 1966 so was not classified as ?green space').
Adding to this, the pressure they put on LCC due to them giving Everton the premier city site of the Kings Dock and hey presto. It is called competence ? something our Board know nothing about. If you look at a plan of the current stadium design, it has hard to argue with the above and the ?green space? of the park isn?t really compromised. Walton Hall Park on the other hand....
Terry Smith, the loop was dismissed by Everton because their partner Tesco already had that area sewn up with a store on the proposed nearby Project Jennifer site. Tesco have since been kicked off Project Jennifer, there is therefore undoubtedly a big opportunity at the moment to get in on the action of this LCC driven project.
What the average person doesn?t realise about the loop site is that it is not just the ?island? part, which looks small on plan, but a much larger area adjacent to the island with endless commercial opportunities.
How about the King’s Dock right in the heart of the Albert Dock, Liverpool One and the famous Liverpool waterfront / skyline. Oh I forgot, Blue Bill and his then best mate millionaire Paul Gregg couldnt stump up the £35 million required to enable the project. Considering the economy was buyoant, money could be borrowed at low interest rates and the City needed a high calibre stadium - what an opportunity missed. The DK fiasco and its enablers - Robert Earl and Tesco prove one thing, and I am with Tony Marsh we can debate the virtues of Walton Hall Park, the Loop or a groundshare with the enemy, under Kenwright expect nothing more than false promises, hot air and down right lies.
Peter, Agree with most of your last post. But Kenwright’s "Mate" Gregg actually offered to provide the funds, as long as EFC were prepared to pay it back, in the form of a reverse mortgage. As I understand it, Kenwright wouldn’t agree. Why? who knows.
Jim Lloyd’s right. There was a proposal put forward by Sainsbury’s for a stadium on Walton Hall Park, apparently, but it didn’t get anywhere. I seem to recall reading on KEIOC that it was effectively scuppered by the Kirkby exclusivity agreement so Everton wouldn’t come to the table. According to this article in the Echo Sainsbury’s pulled out but would be interested in revisting it http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/liverpool-news/local-news/2008/04/30/my-plan-for-everton-fc-at-walton-hall-park-100252-20842170/
Thanks for the link James it makes very interesting reading and i agree with the part about it being an under used area and having trouble with youths.I lived a stones throw from the park for 20 odd years and it has been left to rot for a long time. It seems to me to be the best option left but after reading some of the posts above would not keep everyone happy maybe there would be a new pressure group formed KEOOOP (keep everton out of our park) sound familiar
