Sometimes You've Gotta Lose The Battle To Win The War

Comments (23)

I'm prepared to be criticised, for this view, but perhaps losing today, especially to a late goal, could be the best thing that's happened in this cruel, cruel summer.

Just picture it. The game has finished 2-2: "The (plucky) boys battled well and were well worth the point / The young lads played their part / It just shows you don't need stars to get a Premier League result."

We got what we deserved. We got what I expected. And the worst thing of all? The largely inept performances of some of the senior players (Arteta up to his goal, Howard, Neville, Lescott). I genuinely don't blame them for their errors. If I plied my trade in a workplace surrounded by that kind of chaos, I would be disheartened. I would wonder what I was doing there. I would make basic mistakes.

Never mind local pressures, perhaps (to previously disinterested national media) this 'shock' result will provide the necessary big-time scrutiny to trigger some basic honesty in those collectively charged with (mis) administering the club's stewardship. From now on, there should be NOWHERE to hide for these people.

The EGM is just the start; there is no going back. There are no more 'second chances' for people who cannot do the basics of a good job. It will take a long time to put this right. I truly have no idea how it will be put right and by who and who will, long term, pay the bills. We have no divine right to be a great football team. We have no divine right to have great players. But all great instututions (and all those that keep their spirit alive) deserve its custodians deliver truth, honesty and sound management. We may not, for some time to come, achieve 'nothing but the best'.

But today, tomorrow and in the future, we CAN demand that a 'nothing but the worst' mentality has no place at Everton Football Club.

I agree Alan. I came away from the match thinking that the result will at least force those in charge to realise that the situation really IS as bad as most people make out and that this in turn will force some action.

I feel terribly disloyal, but part of me was hoping we got tonked today. A win would only have prompted the EFC publicity machine to hastily paper over the cracks and say how good the squad is. OK, in the loss there were positive aspects to be taken, but losing in the way we did to Blackburn, who themselves are a team in transition really must highlight to the most fervent Kenwright fanboy that all is not well.

The fact that Davey was unable really to change things with a substitution or two was really obvious today. I know he introduced Baxter, but the last thing we want again is one of our prospects thrust in too soon and go the way of Branch, Cadamarteri etc. I just hope Moyes isn’t the one who carries the blame in the long run. There is a chronic lack of investment and isn’t under the control of the manager or players.

Do you know what was worse than the result for me?

The lack of white shirts, some protest.

I am inclined to agree,
Any kind of result would give the present regimes apologists something to cling to. We deserved nowt and that’s what we got. Did we not lose only to the sky 4 at home last year? Wake up call delivered. If I did my job to the standard of the powers that be at Everton, I would quite rightly lose my job!

I only ashamedly admit to agreeing. Today’s loss should be a clear message that we need players, and a draw might have convinced Moyes that we could cope. Here’s hoping we have another 6 players by the end of the month. Doubt it’d happen, knowing our transfer policy and speed of transfers, maybe about 2.

I’ll admit I hold my hand up too. Reality check for the management. Now if we don’t see any players coming in the next 2 weeks I’m afraid the rot is beyond repair. Something terrible has been going on all summer. Maybe if BK is looking to sell then he can’t spend the money which is reserved for the new potential owners? Fuck, who know’s what’s going on? Gutted with the result, at least we have 37 games to rectify (I can still dream).

Spot on Alan.
It hurts me to see Everton lose at any time but a win today would have glossed over the real situation of whats happening at this club. For the first time in 40 years of following the blues home and away I could not name the subs who where warming up alongside the main stand(no disrespect to the young uns).Something is really wrong at the club and unless they give us a bit of honesty I can see the crowd really turning on BK shortly. At the moment I am in the "love the team, hate the club" camp.

We had a team out there today capable of beating an under average Blackburn side? The wind did?nt help us in the first half, but we was backing off and ball watching, the dynamics of the team and everybody in the ground could see where that ball was going for the Dunne goal! we used to do all them same errors three or four seasons ago and we don?t head, tackle or pass to a blue shirt! We would have won that game two nil with a Lee Carsley or somebody who would have rolled their sleaves up and got stuck and passed with a bit of accuracy.

I agree with what you say cos I was thinking the same, but still would have prefered a point! A win would have been daylight robbery and would have papered over the huge cracks, but lets face it, we knew of them anyway and so does Moyes!

All seems a bit naive to me. Does anyone really think Kenwright or Moyes minds were changed by the last minute goal into thinking something different than they had been doing the previous 89 minutes?

The main problem with this football club is it is run so bloody badly. How we cannot afford to or are unable to buy players when we see all other clubs in the league spending shitloads of money is difficult to fathom for me.

We need at least 6 players before the window closes and even that would still give us a very small sqaud compared to other teams. Lets not forget we were on our knees from March onwards last season and we have shed 6/7 players since then.

But how realistic is it too get that many players inside 14 or 15 days when we have been unable to buy one player since the end of last season?

Interesting points but let me ask.

Did any of you SERIOUSLY believe that Moyes was hoping to go the whole season, or even to Jan with the current squad? In which case losing today has done nothing but deprive us of points.

The issue isn?t buying players, it?s buying QUALITY player. In that market we have no clout and are syuck in a dangerous waiting game. Waiting for prices to drop BEFORE the window shuts.

Todays result was the best we could hope for, to get 2 goals was quite good.

The first 11 was poor.... and we had no choice but to field that 11. The bench HAHAHAHAHAHA, oh dear.

Howard cant release a ball quickly, Lescott was not his usual self, he was at fault for thier 2nd goal. Jagielka was woeful in the middle, he never was, is or will be a centre mid, Neville should retire, i actually wish he got a lengthy ban, by far the worst player to wear a blue shirt in many a year... simply not a premiership player. Baines was dog shit and not the player we signed from Wigan, got shown up by Warnock, Valente wasn’t at the races.

Yobo did well and showed he is our best defender, as in best at defending. Rodwell done his best and showed he WILL be a class act ONE DAY but isn’t ready just yet.

Ozzie tried his best to give us that spark but could not do it alone, surrounded by fucking defenders everywhere he looked.

Arteta was the best player on the pitch by a mile and if it wasn’t for him we would not have scored or created a thing. Same goes for the Yak, he will always score goals but needs help.

It really was a master stroke to let AJ and Faddy go and then hand that Joke Neville a deal until he’s 35, yet only offer Carsley a year!!

All in all it was embarrassing, we are embarrassing at the moment and Blackburn, who are shite, twatted us in our own back yard.

Kenwright the lying bullshitting dramatic blagging twat needs to do the right thing and sell us.

"i’m just a fan" well sit in the stands and support then instead of slowly killing us you pathetic excuse for a owner. "watch this space" I have been for 3 months PRICK!!!! Your board is a joke as well.

Sorry to be so down but what the fuck have I got to be happy about, THERE IS NO BRIGHT SIDE until Cahill, Pienaar, Vaughan and Anichebe are back and 5 new players walk through the door within 2 weeks.

Without that, we are a Wigan or a Newcastle!!!!!

We aren’t even that Ben. If we don’t get the signings we need we’ll have to approach the cups the way Reading did last year, because there is no way we’ll survive the Premiership season as is, if we don’t.

Mark,

To be fair, your right lad.

This squad is not to good to go down, seriously. Its shite. I know there has only been one game before you all start saying i’m over reacting, but only time will tell and we’ll know in 16 days.

At least 5 new players are needed in 2 weeks and i really cannot see 1 arriving. We need Cahill and Pienaar badly also. Without the above we are FUCKED.

It makes me fume to see we have signed no one and Moutinho who is world class has admitted and got shit for publicly stating he wants to come, as has M’Bia. And the worst part is, players like Malbranque and Mendes, Sidwell, Chimbonda, Kapo, Hoyt etc have gone for next to nothing! You wont win the league with them but they would Walk in our team at the minute and improve us no end!!

They are all GOOD SOLID RELIABLE players and the 2 right backs i named, make a show of that bag of shit Neville.

Beggers cant be choosers. Something is very very wrong and we have a right to know the truth. Its inexcusable what is happening to our club.

Last year there was a feel good factor created by the cup runs in Europe and the Carling Cup and it created a confidence in the players and fans to get to fifth (best of the rest) but there is no chance we can cope in cup competitions with such a thread bare squad this season and just chasing a highest possible place will be heartbreaking when we really did have a chance to step up a gear with a few decent players. So sad.

We were embarassed by Blackburn; no disrespect but Man U would have put double figures past us today we were that embarrassing. Something needs to be done, Moyes looks shattered, not interested. Something is very wrong, it needs to be sorted now,or we are desined for relegation. Believe me, that is the worst performance for 6 years that we have seen; I am seriouisly concerned.

The simple fact is Kenwright has been spending above our means, juggling between selling assets and borrowing off his rich friends, this policy was doomed and now we have to pay for it. How we do I don't know...

For every person that questioned the merits of DK can I please convey the abject disollusioment that preceded today’s game, in all my time supporting EFC I have never witnessed the Spellow, Winslow, Oak, and Brick so quiet and devoid of atmosphere.

Absolutely spot on article, Alan. The supporters of Bill Kenwright dismiss criticism by asking what the alternative is. Quite frankly, I don?t believe that ordinary working folk, who spend a lot of money supporting our club, should be expected to ignore the fact that something about Everton stinks.

Can I hear the sound of heads being pulled out of the sand? Dont turn on Moyes though. David Moyes has his faults as a manager, tactically naive sometimes (leaves me tearing my hair out), players played out of position too often and some dodgy signings (Krøldrup, Davies & one or two others, make your own minds up), and yes I remember the 39 points. This said though, I think he still stacks up favourably against other Premier League managers, he has made some great signings & we have begun to show consistency in the league over the last couple of years, plus a good cup run in Europe.

Moyes is still learning, and we would (and possibly will), be a lot worse off without him. He is also a man of integrity, he keeps his own council, but I fear even his patience may be getting stretched. The big problem is Bill Kenwright. The man is a trained actor, and too many blues fall for it. He looks for investment "24/7" for eight years, well surprisingly the moneymen looking to invest won't hand over large sums of their cash to Bill, they want to also have control over that cash, no go. Sorry, Bill, but you haven't the tools to do the job yourself, who's the next on the list after Gregg, Earl, & Green? He phones Moyes between 10-25 times a day, well i think if I was Moyes I would have him call barred.

He has been on the Everton Board for many years now, and the club's profile has been destroyed (something with his media connections, I would have thought he actually could have done something about), but no, it's embarrassing watching him on TV. Kenwright manages to sidestep everytime, someone else has always taken the flak, Smith, Gregg, even Carter in the end... remember Kenwright said "I don't want to be chairman" and when fans began to complain it was Carter who took the stick. Well I hope Moyes doesn't carry the can this time.

I know Kenwright is a passionate blue, and I wish it had worked out for him, but it hasn'tand it's now time for complete change at the top as soon as is practically possible, before we end up like Leeds or worse!

Having come off a shocking day of watching my AFL team lose (badly) and Melbourne Victory draw 0-0 in pretty much a bore draw, I felt that things really couldn’t improve.

My mates and I trekked in the pouring rain through the city from pub to pub, looking for somewhere SHOWING the game, finally having to return to our hotel room to find somewhere to watch it (GODDAMN RUGBY!)

Anyways. I actually enjoyed the game, well, ofcourse the final note cut a cruel blow but after ALL the bad, we did actually get a result of some sort with what bare bones we really had!

Baines down the left, Jags in the middle. A bench full of kids.

Yet we managed to pull one back before half time, and LEAD after one of Yakubu’s most impressive runs ever after a pass to Arteta, then a run half way down the field to head one home.

WOW. (My mates told me off for yelling so loud in the hotel and upsetting possible neighbours.. LIKE I CARED.. Mates = Pompey and Chelski supporters.. lol)

Anyways. Santa Cruz is a top player, and with the gimme, it was 2-2 and the game just kept posing a possible bright future, but even with the excitement of seeing Baxter on and coming close, cruelty took away our chances in the final minute.

But hell, I found it enjoyable. And for a game I saw as a loss (After all) I really wasn’t disappointed and proud to see the fight and result both Arteta, Yakubu gave and the team with what we had managed.

I know we keep saying it, but when Peanutts, Cahill, the NEW Van Der Meyde do get back into contention. Well..

AND HELL we have to sign at least one great name. We’ll be a force to reckon with.

We have a bunch of easy as games to come, so even if the next few weeks we remain bare boned, I think the new blood we can still topple, 3 of them and Pompey who were slaughtered 2nite.. I think we will be up there!

I’m really just so happy for Arteta’s overcoming of injury to pull off some C.Ronaldo style brillance :)

Calm down, calm down - the problem for many Everton supporters is that expectations have been raised by the last couple of seasons. We feel that, with the right additions we could be on the verge of cracking the top four and all the hard work and planning that has gone into getting us into that position is in danger of evaporating in an instant because no one is doing anything... and of course they have a point ? you can?t stand still in football at this level.

Well, the inactivity as I see it is probably due to two reasons: Moyes rightly has identified quality signings like Moutinho as being the players he needs to take Everton to the next level. Getting players like that is a lot less easy than buying decent Championship talent like Johnson and Lescott. Kenwright does not have huge amounts of cash at his disposal and in trying to bring in the signings that Moyes has asked for he is constantly looking to barter and secure decent players for less money then certainly their buying clubs think they are worth. Moutinho is valued at £20M by Sporting, why should they sell to another club only prepared to offer £12M and with the payments staggered. They might if Moutinho forces the issue but it doesn?t look like he is prepared to do that for Everton who clearly do not carry the same weight abroad as a Man U or a Chelsea. Of course if we had more money then it would probably be easier but we haven?t so what do we do?

"Bill Kenwright must stand aside" is the common cry, well fine but for whom? There does not seem to be that many investors with the odd one hundred million to spare out there but of course the suspiscion persists that in his quest for a new investor Bill?s heart is just not in it. One suspects that he would rather run Everton himself, despite the financial limitations, then risk bringing in someone who he perceives is not right for the club. And whose to say he is not right some of the investors in Premier League clubs do look decidely dodgy. But not all and it would be interesting to know who might or might not have been interested in Everton in the last few years. In the meantime I suspect he?s also having fun ? running Everton would be something of a dream for most of us wouldn?t it?

So what next - well if no one arrives before the transfer window shuts then we have got a big problem but I for one just can?t believe that Bill and David will let that happen. I will be astonished if they don?t get at least two decent players in before the end of August, it's not enough but it would stave off the immediate crisis. Meantime maybe we shouldn?t be too dismissive and critical of these guys ? they are doing their best to bring a bit of quality to Goodison, I?m convinced of that.
