The Mail Bag

Bury your blues......

......at least for a while. On BBC4 at 8:50pm on Monday 18th August is a full length documentary called, "The Golden Vision" about "a group of Everton fans' relationship with their club" and - Alex Young no doubt. I think it was written in 1968 at a time when I was 2 years old and EFC were well and truly established as one of the "Big Five" with a probably a higher standing in the game than our satanic neighbours. A nice diversion from our current woes and a reminder - if we needed one in the light of recent fan divisions - of what makes Evertonians tick.

Dr David France has written an excellent book on Alex Young ? one of many things we discussed when I bumped into him the other day. Lot's more events coming up in a month of Alex Young Celebrations.

It was directed by the great Ken Loach.

Brilliant it was!
Aside from the obvious reasons it was actually quite entertaining as I remember it.... I?d love a copy of it (but I live in The States now so I doubt I?ll get one).
I was 11 in 1968..... already supporting EFC for four years (since 09/19/64).

I guess if something similar was released today it would be called BLURRED VISION, lol.

Anyway, a great documentary!

As I?m sure a lot of people will point out, it isn?t a documentary but a television drama. It was shot in a ?fly on the wall? style by Ken Loache but was in fact scripted by the Director after improvisation by the actors (one of whom was Brookie?s own Harry Cross - Bill Dean, who chose his stage name after his great hero and eventual friend William Ralph). It is interspersed with interviews with players like Brian Labone and Gordon West, and with real footage from matches against Man City at home and Arsenal away. If you haven?t seen it, it?s well worth a view, if only for brief glimpses of Alan Ball and the Vision himself.

Sorry, correction to the above, the screenplay was by Neville Smith, not Ken Loache, but when you see it, you’ll wonder whether there was any script at all!

Writing was also credited to Gordon Honeycombe- a famous newsreader (and Evertonian) from the sixties and seventies. Also a young John Hurt has a small cameo role..Martin Cutler, if you try ebay there are a couple of DVDRs for sale quite cheap. Not sure of the quality though.

I recently managed to acquire a copy via E Bay - it is well worth watching. I was 10 at the time the matches vs Man City,Arsenal and Sheffield United were filmed. It brings back a lot of memories.

Look out for Stan Boardman at the back of a group of Evertonians marching down the platform at Euston.

Just finished watching it - wonderfully evocative and somehow captured what it means to be an Evertonian. I went to my first match the next year as an 8-year old and so the era means a lot to me.

It would be far too clever to link this with our current plight and the debate on Goodison Park, investment, managerial stability, passion for the club, our history and our heritage etc. but I would like to think that some in the club hierarchy have watched this (perhaps even for the first time) and might realise that this club is only ’loaned’ to them for a few years, and they have a duty to do what’s best for it for fans, past, present and future. Get a grip! Our club deserves to be treated with more care and respect than some are currently giving it. We deserve better than what this summer has brought so far!

I remeber having to go to see it when it was first on at someone’s house who had BBC 2 as only a few peole had the channel then when it was originally broadcast in 1968. Couldn’t help but think during the interviews with John Moores and Jack Sharp the statements about the club making money and being quite solvent and how they would support the manager with money to make the side better and also how after 2 years if they were not doing the business then ’they were not the right man for the job’ etc. Made you remeber how Everton really were one of the BIG clubs in this country. We never capatalised on it as Man Utd and dare I say it Liverpool did and complecency set in believing that things would always be that way ( as the board did in the mid 80’s too).Aside from the football angle the scene when the priest calls will ring a bell with anyone of similar age(I was 12 in 1968) and R.C . Hilarious.A brief shining memory when we were something in these dark depressing days.

Looks like the answer to all our current woes then.
Make sure you all get down to mass next Sunday and all will be ok.
Get Bill to slip the priest a light ale and hey presto, or is that hallelujah, Moutinho will sign before you know it.
By the way, the old Luton van wasn?t exactly the Blue Streak was it!
But what a great, great nostalgic capture of the day.
Be watching it on BBC iplayer all week now I think. Get on their and catch it if you were not lucky enough to see it tonight.
