I see Stubsy has had to call it a day. I for one would like to pay tribute to a great servant of the game, a true Blue and an example to anyone blighted by cancer. Twice he beat it and pursued a top-flight football career.

I am glad he got to play with his beloved Everton and I am happy to have been able to see him give his all for the blues.

Good luck in your retirement, Stubsy, and lets hope we see you at Goodison cheering the team on for many more years.

He was actually at Goodison on Saturday cheering the boys on.

Blue to the core, thanks for all your efforts Stubbsy.

Does anyone think he'd be a good addition to Everton's staff, perhaps as a defensive coach? He was always a good influence on Yobo for example, and could instill some confidence into the back line again. Just an idea.

Not for me Mark. He was too far up Rooney?s arse when he was leaving ? plus he?s a miserable fucker.

All the best Stubbsy lad! A great leader for our club and always gave 100% and can be proud that he helped the team finished 4th when everyone had written us off after Rooney left. It’s a shame he didn’t come to us a bit earlier in his career when he was at Celtic and possibly at his prime.

He was out in the fly in the loaf with Joe Parkinson and Matt Jackson saturday night after the game. They all looked like they were having a laugh.

I have an idea. Let's pump Stubbsy full of pain killing injections and play him against West Brom. We are short of players after all. I reckon he could form a great partnership with the Yak up front..... what's that you say? Lay off the dooby? Oh ok, does he have any children, maybe we could sign them?

He’d be great to have around the place, just the kind of character we need. If we can’t afford anything else maybe we can rustle up a couple of grand to pay for him to do his coaching badges!

Yep he?d be very welcome back here. Imagine how many young players he?d be able to advise to take up opportunities at other clubs a la Rooney.

Then again, if we ever needed someone to organise a Moyes out campaign, Stubbsy?s yer man, as he?s had a go at that before.

To be honest with you I think the size of his mouth was totally out of proportion to his footballing ability.

Ron, way to bring down the tone of a thread designed as congratulations and thanks to former player.
Stubbsy was a grand player for us and deserves a humble thanks from everyone at the club.
Cheers AS.

Sorry Viv

But Ron is entitled to his opinion. Yes, he was a blue, but I am not sure he was the great player many of you claim he was.

Does anyone remember the negative comments he made about the club after he moved to Sunderland about his beloved Everton?? Not exacty dignified was it. His involvement with the Rooney transfer does not exactly smack of loyalty either.

I?m afraid I have to concur with Ron and Ed on this. My respect for Alan Stubbs and his considerable personal achievements will always be tempered by his involvement in the Rooney business. Couldn?t see Brian Labone, Mick Lyons or Dave Watson acting in the way he did if it had been their role to mentor the boy at the time.

Don't blame Stubbs for Rooney leaving. Rooney was always going to leave with misery guts Moyes for a manager. Blame Moyes if you must blame someone.

Just because he’s a blue doesn’t make him a good player. He was committed to the cause and would give his all but don’t let that mask his difficiencies. He was slow when he arrived and got slower as the years progressed and was always quick to blame others. His constant attempt to hit 50yd passes was a joke. Whilst I wish him no harm at all I do not look back at his time at Everton with any great sense of achievement. He would never have got a game at any other club in the top half of the table and his time at Sunderland showed that when ’he’s a blue’ made no difference he was quickly moved on. Like Ed I too think his involvement in Rooney’s move was unacceptable and his comments about us when he left for Sunderland were uncalled for. Not good riddance but certainly no tears from me.

Stubbs was a quality defender who improved as he got older. I don’t see how anyone can doubt that, he was quaity and we finished 4th, 6th and 7th with him at the back. He and David Weir helped develop Joe Yobo and he always gave his all.

If he wasn’t good he wouldn’t have been playing in a top six team at 35. He was a leader, Lescott and Yobo never looked comfortable without him and he improved our defence as a unit.

Yes he made mistakes but we all do. Forgive and forget I say. I don’t hold a grudge anyway. Excellent servant for our club and his presence along with Lee Carsley pushed us in the right direction.

I heard he retired because the Rooney money’s come in for him - nice little nest egg that must be for him.

Played well for us, so happy retirement to him but I reckon he’s a twat off the park.

I won't forget the shit that Stubbs had to put up with from the Board and the reason he left for Sunderland... heartless gets (you have to give up your cash if your cancer comes back ) but he came back to where he wanted to be despite that - he was a blue through and through -but ultimately a total professional.
Good luck, Stubbsy lad.

Please dont give it that "great servant" bollocks. He was paid a ridiculous sum of money to do what all of us would do for nothing. I'm not saying he wasn't decent but he's a millionaire, not a "servant".

Can?t believe the shit he is receiving from blues. So what about Rooney? Stubbs was top class for EFC. We are at a low point in the club's history at the moment if we are slagging off Stubbs.

As an aside, how frustrating were his bazooka free kicks (with 10 yard run up) straight into the shins of the wall?

Did he ever manage to put one of them away?

Great reader of the game. Top servant to the club, saw us through a difficult period. Wasn’t a cheat or a fouler. Overcame illness and disability to play at the highest level of his sport. The guy is a marine. Shame on some of the above comments.

Some people need to get a bit of perspective, dismissing Stubbs as a ’twat’ off the field, ridiculous, yet again people reacting to hearsay and rumours rather than what their own eyes and ears tell them. Stubbs came to us too late in his career but he certainly gave us his all, he didnt need pace (good job), his reading of the game and willingness to throw anything in the way usually did the job - remember that backs-to-the-wall 0-0 at Anfield - he was absolutely magnificent. Top man - Im sure he’ll make a great pundit too (he definitely has the face for radio).

John Langley, I remember at least twice; one of them during his last season with us (deflected of said shin in the wall IIRC). Van Nistelrooy got the better of him at Goodison once, but I’ll forgive for that!

Really can’t understand the negativity. I always thought he was a genuine role model - and frankly, the club treated him badly (I wonder if they could get away with that now?)

I’d like to see both him and David Unsworth back with us in some guise

Oh, and its daft to say that they’re not Blues because they were paid the going rate.

Oh I forgot Stubbs supported Everton! that excuses everything doesnt it, even when he slags the club off!

Sorry dont agree. Stubbs turned us down to play his best years at Celtic. We take him on after that and he drags us through the tabloids claiming we got rid cus he had cancer. Then he becomes the mouthpiece for DK. Nope, sorry, but I wont miss him at all. I wish him well in his future though, just dont think he deserves a champayne goodbye.
