Should we `do one` on the Uefa Cup?

Comments (11)

With Everton`s resources at an all-time low and only an outside chance of bringing in `real quality` before the deadline, David Moyes will quickly have to establish his priorities for the season. Should he attempt to `fight on all fronts`? League, Uefa Cup, FA Cup and Carling Cup ? or just settle for another good year in the Prem?

Middlesbrough did this a few years ago when McClaren fielded a group of kids in many of the Uefa and domestic cup competitions. If my memory serves me right they did pretty well for him and he was as a consequence able to claim a decent league position as well as develop some promising talent.

I know how much we all enjoy our overseas trips ? and I`ll still go whatever team is put out ? but in any time of adversity you have to be selective so `doing one on Europe` seems a `no brainer` to me!

Yeah that?s right ?do one? in one of the competions we have a realistic chance of winning....No wonder this club is in the shit it?s in with ambition like that.
Too many of the people on this site are far too easy to accept mediocrity as success.
Success is about winning trophies...winning trophies will raise our international profile and attract better players to give us a chance to win more trophies...but no let?s ?do one? and be happy finishing 10th in the Premier League eh !!

Considering we are already playing the kids would you suggest we now play the babes in arms or a combination of sperm and eggs and just hope they gell.

We should go out to win every game and aim to progress in all we can. If we play our strongest side at all times and get on a run who knows how far it will take us. Winning breeds confidence and leads to more winning. In contrast getting tonked by Slavia Puchingabad will probably lead to Arteta, Cahill, Lescott and the Yak wondering why they bother especially if as you are suggesting they have to watch it from the stands.

Seriously I understand where you are coming from but waving the white flag on a competition we all enjoyed so much last year would be plain silly.

At the moment, if we don’t sign anyone I’d have to say play the reserves in the uefa cup along with a few first team players and we may get away with it against some of the poorer teams in the competition. We can’t afford to risk gettin first team players injured in the Uefa Cup and then being even shorter on numbers for important Premier League games. I think a weakened Everton side would still beable to get the results against the unseeded teams in the competition and we could field a full stength team against the stronger teams. Hopefully Moyes can bring in a few players to help the team compete on four fronts. I can picture it now no new signings and then on transfer deadline day "Breaking news Everton sign ..." coming up every few hours lol. We can all hope and dream.

The same response came up when this question was asked last season, and that response seems to be that winning this trophy raises our profile.
I don’t think so, I think just being part of the upper league placings in the EPL gives more profile to the world than even going all the way in this competition.
Plus I don’t think there’s footballers around the world think great shakes of Zenit or Rangers... until you’re in the CL you’re nothing.

Remember the cup game against Oldham last year - 5 reserves and we were absolute shite. If we deliberately play our reserves then fine - just hope the club don't expect anyone to go and watch.

Phone rings in the Moutinho household.

"Hullo, Davey Moyes here. Ah’ve been thinking, we’ve finally scraped the cash together and we’d wonder if you’d still like to play for us."

Moutinho: " Sure no prob Mr. Moyesy. Speak to my club, it’ll all be ok."

Moyesy:" Nice one, could ye start on Monday?"

Moutinho: " Sure, like I say, no prob."

Moyesy: " Don’t forget your boots, ( laughs nervously), and we’re spewing the UEFA cup this year, (coughs)"

Moutinho: " What you say?"

Moyesy: " Nothing, see ya Monday.."

Moutinho: " Hang on now, this all changed.."

Dial Tone.

Moutinho to wife: Put those fuckin suitcases away, we’re going nowhere!!

Realistically we all know that the Premiership is our bread and butter and until we have a squad that can fight on all fronts it is the only competition that really matters.

However, the prestige that comes from playing in Europe attracts better European players. How do you think our current stars, that have fought tooth and nail last season to qualify for the UEFA Cup, would feel about us rolling over and dying, or playing kids and refusing them the chance to play in glamorous ties home and away?

I think it would be very detrimental to the team spirit to field weakened teams in the competition. Reluctantly, I feel that we have to sacrifice the Carling and FA Cup this season (or use it to give valuable first-team experience to the Academy players.

A bit early for this drivel.

Transfer window is still open and Cup competitions are some weeks away.

Remember Bolton last season. Chickened out in Portugal, saving all the best players for a League game at Wigan...... of course they still lost to Wigan and went narrowly out of Europe when they could have got through with their best team.

You say it’s a no-brainer. Well, not yet it isn’t, chicken shit!!

If we only got £400K from a good run in UEFA last time, that’s less than you get for each place in the Prem so I can understand from a business point of view what should take precedence.
However, that’s hardly the outlook an ambitious club should be taking,is it?
But then,are Everton truly ambitious?

Peter Pickles you must be dafter than your name sounds if you think being in the Uefa Cup will attract top player. We did quite well in it last season but what do ya know not a single signing as of yet this year. Why is that then Pete? I mean we are in the Usless Cup arent we?

Big flaw in the article,

"Middlesbrough did this a few years ago when McClaren fielded a group of kids in many of the Uefa and domestic cup competitions. If my memory serves me right they did pretty well for him and he was as a consequence able to claim a decent league position as well as develop some promising talent. "

Now is that the same middlesbrough that Yakubu left because of a lack of ambition, the same club that expects a 15-10 league position and views it as a success.

Your right it is a no brainer...

Do one with the FA cup and League Cup, use them to develop youth fine, most european players dont care about those tournaments anyway, but if everton do well in europe we become a more attractive club to good foreign players. Sevilla and Valencia both used the UEFA cup to make them much bigger clubs, financially it offers little but is necessary for our future development, we just need afew players.
