Riera welcome or not?

Comments (45)

Having read the latest news of our interest in this player it's pretty much confirmed that we are definitely in the mix but seemingly the only thing holding up a move is the player's preference to play for the other lot.

Though what's not clear is his reasoning. Is it the opportunity of Champions League football or a player in love with the club? My question is would it have any bearing on the thoughts of the Everton fan base, would he still be welcome whatever the reasoning if he were to sign for us.

What is clear is that his current club are in no mood to alter their stance and the other lot will still have to match our bid. Personally I'd be happy for him to sign if it were simply an issue of Champions League football but if he harbors a long term aspiration to play for the neighbours across the park I'd give him a wide berth. If we fail in our bid we'll at least have forced them to part with a few more of their millions. As they say every cloud has a silver lining.

I like to think that when a player makes the choice to come to Everton, he’s the right sort of player for Everton.
Think what would have happened to those possible signings had they come to us... Parker, Imre, Sissoko...
If they don’t come then they were not right in the first place.

Two words Gerry: Player Power.

If he wants to join Liverpool, eventually his current club would be forced to accept a bid of theirs even if it is lower.

I’ve already said anyway: if he wants to play somewhere else, don’t sign him. we need players - yes, but players who want to play with us. Forget trying to "convince" them and wasting time, money and effort.

Completely agree with Mark Wynne, if they do not want to play for us then don’t sign them. I would like to think that there is still some shred of romance in the game.

If its a left winger DM is after I’d much rather see him put a bid in for Arda Turan. Surely the figures would be similar & IMO we’d be getting a better player for our 10-12m. Riera was shite at City & would probably maintain that form here. Resounding no thanks from me!!

Irrespective of anything else - good or no good, prospect or not - the man probably has no idea that stating a preference to play for the shite would have any effect on Everton, as possible employers or their supporters. It all comes down to money and CL records.

Read somewhere that its CL and also the fact that he knows Beneathus, what he’s achieved, is Spanish and also he doesnt have a clue who Moyes is, nor I suspect that he has any clue of Everton’s record.

In love with the club?? Are you taking the piss?? Since when was any player in love with a club reason for them signing? What a load of rubbish - I couldnt care less if they like the club let alone love it; the blokes from Spain mate, why would he suddenly love Everton or the RS for that matter?

Seriously.

Agree with Mark Wynne and imagine how much time and effort would have been saved over Tiago if they bothered to listen to him blow out a return to the prem in January with Spurs. Daily Express (yeah I know but what else have we got to go on besides tomorrow’s chip wrappers) has rumour of Man City going back in for SWP, now for me he would be a steal and a great proven EPL player.

If he doesnt want to come and the RS make any sort of offer he’ll go there, if they dont make an offer he will come to us as he wants to leave Espanyol, simple as.

Looks like Moutinho isnt going to happen if Moyes is looking at wingers - this means Arteta will be operating in the centre, so chalk that one off.

SWP would be great on the right - but it seems Citeh are making an offer and I guess he would bo back there. Just seen this on cfcfc.net - chelsea fand website who said he was joing us last night:

Following our report on Sunday 25th August stating that Shaun Wright-Phillips will be joining Everton, we now understand that his former side Manchester City have also come in with a bid. Wright-Phillips is said to be upset at the prospect of leaving Chelsea with new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari not including him in his plans for Chelsea?s future.

We here at cfcuk.net are sympathetic to the plight of Wright-Phillips with the player desperately wanting to remain at Stamford Bridge. Although he travelled to Wigan with the rest of the squad for yesterday?s match, he was subdued after learning that arrangements were being made for his sale.

With the purchase of Robinho expected to be completed sometime this week, Wright-Phillip?s place in the side would be limited so perhaps, for the player, a move away is the right decision.

We here at cfcuk.net wish Shaun all the best for his future and would like to thank him for his contribution to the Chelsea side since his arrival at Stamford Bridge.

I don’t want any player wearing a blue jersey if his chosen destination is that shower of shite over the park.

I don’t even know why are wasting our time with this player; I would sooner see a couple of kids in contention than someone who isn’t 100% committed; regardless of the consequences.

They’ve take the Google translation a little too literally, Steve. All the report on the French site says is that according to The Guardian Everton could be about to offer the €12.5m that would persuade Rennes to sell. In actual fact, the Guardian report merely says that a compromise may be reached seeing as Rennes want £10m and we’ve only offered £7m.

Gerry to answer the question about ?his reasoning? the simple fact is that most kids with any interest in ?the beautiful game? ACROSS THE GLOBE will have heard of the RS by the age of ten.

However, with our pitiful excuse for ?promoting our brand? we count ourselves lucky if kids as far away as kirkby (see what i did there?) have heard of us....

So, much as we may hate it ?they? and the other three will (for now) always be the preferred option to everton for most top overseas players, or at best they will use us as a quite well paid stepping stone before they achieve their main objective.

A perfect example of this is Stephane M?Bia who has said as much recently, but i for one would gladly ignore his comments and swallow my pride just to have him in our team this season.

I don?t enjoy saying that. But its true.

Reira has turned his back before he’s even arrived, has reached his peak and is over-rated. Don’t want him!

As for SWP, why are we only offering a loan deal? Is he not good enough to buy? If the player is available (and we have money) then the player needs the assurances of a stable future. Are we really going to lose another top target because we’re too cheap?

Interesting points, have to say I do feel uneasy with us pursuing an interest in the player. Equally I have to agree with those who question his worth.
The latest headline would appear to suggest he is about to join the dark side but as I said every cloud has a silver lining. It is rumored they have now had to up their bid from 5m to 8m plus add ons. If true, possibly the most rewarding piece of business we’ve done to date.
James this may come as a surprise to you but a certain well known striker who hails from Spain claims to have been a longstanding fan of the other lot and sites this as the reason not only for joining the club but also remaining with them strange but true. Sadly though as Neil quite rightly points out the EFC brand struggles to make it beyond the cities boundaries.

If Chelsea acquire Robhinio then i think SWP will definitely be on his way. Everton like usual are looking for a loan deal, whilst I have read a few reports stating that Mark Hughes will offer £10mil cash, if this is the case then I?m afraid it looks as though Everton will miss out. I see we have also been linked with Zigic, I think he would be a very good addition, he scores with both feet and due to his tremendous build (Unlike Peter Crouch, who remind of a matchstick man) he should be very good in the air. Again I have read that Everton are looking for a loan deal with him as well, however Villa are also interested in him and they will probably offer straight cash and a more secure and longterm deal to the player. Why do People at Everton think they can get players on loan when there are always three or four other clubs sniffing around who are prepared to offer cash deals! This really fucking pisses me off if I must say!!!

I reckon Benitez will be sctaching his beard as we speak thinking who is Moyes interested in I need to buy them cos I am crap at choosing good players just look at the duffers I have already bought. I would not break the bank for Riera I thought he was shite at MCFC and the Spanish fans are not exactly jumping for joy at his performances. SWP would be a great addition IMO. Liverpool will have to put up the cash for Albert which would give me a laugh.

I dont know why Manny was let go so easily. We are now struggling to find players of his calibre and he could have gone straight into the squad.

I do not want Riera overrated and unnecessary.

If we reallly want a winger why dont we offer Cardiff a figure they cant refuse for Joe Ledley.Unlike SWP would fit into the wage structure and would be motivated to prove himself.

Just read the following on the Times website, time to pull out and walk away to save more embarassment, seems strange though us bidding for Riera when Liverpool was his prefered destination, maybe it was a ploy to bump the price up for the Red Shite, hope Benitez is fuming.

?There is a team which is offering what we have asked and another one which isn?t, but the player is interested in the one which is offering the least,? Paco Herrera, the Espanyol sporting director, said. ?We will not lower our asking price.?

Thats him I think Lyndon. Turkish geezer *L*...next on our long list of signings this week. I make it 27 so far......have to be an effing big bench against Pompey *L*

With regard to Riera (if there’s any truth in it whatsoever) I just cant see the logic in making big bids for players in positions which you’d think would be a nice to have, as opposed to the "very necessary", BEFORE (it appears) we have filled the most important and necessary position.
Whatever you say about Moyes he’s not "stupid" so why Oh why isn’t he looking to fill the CM position first? unless there’s a method in his apparent madness....I can’t wait for September the 2nd !!!

SWP does have this knack of passing sideways and backwards WITHOUT looking to see if a teammate is actually there. Usually an opponent intercepts the ball and break on the counter. Good player going forward but careless and casual in possession. Yes Pip is crap and Jags goes hoofing but thought I?ll add my observations of SWP.

Fair point about SWP, I still think he would be a good signing though lightning quick and very positive, direct on the ball, the only other thing which bothers me is his lack of height in a midfield already not the tallest.

It doesn’t matter who they would prefer to play for... only who pays their wages and if he ends up an Everton player I’d bear him no ill will for saying he would have preferred to move to the team that is in the CL.

Players who have supported clubs all their lives have no loyalty nowadays - why should we expect it of a guy who has nothing to do with Everton or Liverpool?

If any player wears a blue shirt I’ll support them. If they play well I’ll think that we have made a good signing.

Final Note: Doesn’t apply to players who have dicked us over in the past.

Paul Olsen: 100% agree with you. And I think it plays a very big part in a player?s week to week performance; if his heart wasnt set on the club he finds himself serving he is surely going to underachieve. Its impossible to say I know, but IMO Riera would almost certainly perform better for RS than us purely bc he wants to be there.
*********************************************************
This may be incredibly short sighted of me considering our problem is not only in quality but in quantity too but if we are, as DM has reiterated incessantly, scouring the market every minute of every day for new bodies then why not just go the extra mile and pay Lisbon the remaining few million? Why not just go for broke on their proven playmaker who, apart from being a more accomplished individual than Riera actually wants to play for the Blues?
