Jonathan de Guzman

So we're linked with this De Guzman kid. I've seen him play for a few years now. He has much talent and surprise, surprise: he isn't the tallest person on the books! He is about 5-ft 9-in. I think he could be a massive signing. He can play in the hole, and also as a right midfield player. He will score sensational goals as he has a great kick in his legs. He seems a bit inconsistent, but for a 20-year-old lad that is no surprise. And Moyes is the perfect manager to cut inconsistencies out. Do not expect De Guzman to do a whole lot of defending though. He's not the typical Moyes-type player...

I actually recommended him earlier in this topic:

I don't think he will be really cheap, about £8 mil might do it.

HE sounds like a real talent, his name has been floating around for a while as someone who might be really good...but i think this year more than any we have been linked with that many different players, i no longer pay attention to rumours. As ever until he is pictured on the OS with the shirt and the scarf shaking Moyes or someone’s hand having actually signed....really it’s immaterial..! Just my thoughts really....

No use to us, Eric, Moyes only signs defenders these days. Fuck the midfield or the attack, let's keep it tight at the back. I mean, "as long as we don't lose" is the attitude Moyes has had ever since he arrived at the club. We need at least 4 more defenders before DM will be happy.

Turn it in Tony, we all knew and mostly agreed that a RB was one of our priorities this summer, a whole midfield as well! But a RB none the less

Tony, the plan is set. Captain Nev will be in the Middle. Jags to CB. Lescott back to LB and baines on the bench. Victor and Vaughan splitting time. Same as last year. If and when Cahill comesback that’s like a new signing.
What’s the story with AVM?

Just wanted to add that the lad is only 20 years old but already played 96 league games, scoring 20 goals. He also has some experience in Europe (not much though) and was one of the better players in the Dutch Olympic team that reached the quarter finals in China.

Stan Sheppard: Ibrahim Afellay from PSV is a real gem. I’d love to see him here but I think he will go for a Spanish or Italian outfit playing in the Champions League next summer. He would be a sensational signing though. Bradley’s teammate Pranjic is one of the best midfielders in the Dutch league as well (regular in the Croatia squad). There’s some potential in Aissati from Ajax , Amrabat from PSV (scored against us) and Fer from Feyenoord as well.

Don’t know about Bradley, both Heerenveen and Bradley have come out recently stating they wouldn’t mind if he stayed until the end of the season and left on a free. As we’re down on numbers I’d love to see him here but there are better midfielders in Holland. Bradley’s got the attention because of his goals and he won’t look awkward in the Premiership but I really feel he won;t be more than a squad player.

Jonathan de Guzman will either choose another club or stay where he is, one way or another he’ll snub Everton, everyone does for some reason.

When did playing for Everton become such an unattractive prospect? Did we not just finish 5th the Premiership and can we not offer Euro football again?

When we pissed about over the summer signing no one, then come out with statements such as "we may not survive til January".

Why do we set ourselves up for failure?

Erik Dols WON’Tt be coming to us! "Watch this space!"

As for being the 5th best team in the league forget it... we’re tenth now!!! Everybody else in football has moved on and we’re still talking about yesterday.

LOL!!! Did I say Erik Dols - sorry Erik (even though I am sure you’d be better in midfield than Neville). I meant De Guzman.

I need to lie down!!!

Thanks Erik, I have heard of Afellay but I have never seen him play. My cousin had a pretty unsuccessful stint a few years back with Willem II Tilberg and he said the amount of quality players that were coming through was amazing.

Is it because of the exposure they get to first team football in the Dutch league that allows them to develope their skills? Or is it the whole approach to youth football over there? Or maybe a combination of both?

If this kid plays as an attacking midfielder where will Moyes play him? Centre-half? Left-back?

Because without a defensive midfielder, the attacking ones don’t get to do their thing. Its the most important position as it facilitates everything else. It should be our main priority.

Forgot to say my original reason for looking at this, which is that I saw De Guzman on TV last season and thought he looked a very good player. I’d be pleased to get him.

J.J.:

Please. I haven’t ’fallen into a media trap’ as I assume you mean. I’ve fallen into a watching football regularly and having my own opinions on it trap. A defensive midfielder is an absolute necessity, do you not watch England games?

’Let the defence do their work’. I’m afraid football doesn’t work like that, you defend as a team and you attack as a team, and the most important man defensively is the guy who shields the back four and prevents the opposition dropping off the centre backs and creating chances.

Ossie Ardiles tried it your way at Spurs in the 90s, it didn’t work. Keegan didn’t win a thing. Ever. And that was despite an almost blank cheque book to buy whoever he liked. Joe Royle won the FA cup with a bunch of journeymen, including the mighty Joe Parkinson, a fantastic shield for the back four. Man United won everything back then with both Ince and Keane able to sit and protect the back four. Why do you think the likes of Makalele, Mikel, Essien, Hargreaves, Mascherano, Flamini etc. go for such big money and earn such high wages, when they don’t score or create goals?

Incidentally I remember a story about 18 months ago that Wenger was ready to let Flamini leave. I suggested we go for him then. He ended up being a key player for Arsenal and going to AC Milan. Someone needs to give Moyes my number.
