Any advance on a £20M transfer spend?

Comments (37)

As an avid fan of `off the wall` spread betting, I have been in discussions with my `boolmaker` this morning about a wager on how much Everton will actually spend in this window.

He wants to set a mean figure of £20Million against which I can sell (go below) or buy (go above). My own view is that the figure is high but office colleagues seem to think Moyes will risk much more. All loans will be left out of the equation and the individual transfer fees will be the average of those reported in four nominated newspapers.

Now I know this is not everyone`s cup of tea but it`s got so serious on here re the transfer budget that a little fun would, at least, brighten up the Mailbag. So can I get some help, please? How much will Davey actually get to part with over the next six days? And is £20M a fair mean figure?

ps: Don`t expect any of my winnings, though!

Hows about 0 .. nothing ... nil ... not a penny ? Bosman free’s and loan signings only.. If indeed there is enough time left to complete those ... the club is talking Moutinho’s, Riera’s and Milito’s and delivering Jakobsen’s (last year read Wessels / Gravesen) .. when will people learn. By the way i will be more than happy to eat my words !

Yes but last year also included Yakubu as our "big" signing, and Jags and Pienaar as the "maybe great" signings. As the standard of player we need to class as our "big" signing has gone up to a level that our, laughable, transfer budget can’t cope with. All the more so because we needed / wanted 2 or 3 "big" transfersto go along the "could be great" transfers, and loan punts.

Derek sell at about £8.5 million. That's the real figure we got for AJ so I am told. There is no way we will spend anywhere near £10 million this window.

All the guff about big name signings in the region of 8mil, 10mil and even 20mil is clearly balls. All that’s been delivered is a usually injured Right back on a free (which is concerning enough just for what it means for Pip Neville). All the names we’ve been linked with are now doing the rounds at rival clubs and it seems that this is because we’re only offering loan deals.

There doesn’t seem to be ANY money for spends. Ambition? What ambition?

My suspicion is that we will spend in transfers a total of no million pounds and no pence.... I think we will sign freebies and loans.

EFC Spending this transfer window. nothing!
I think we are skint and spending any money that has come in on borrowing from previous years.

I have a hopefull feeling that Moyes is making up the numbers for Loan/Free agent deals and will use the bulk of what he does have to spend on his No 1 taget Moutinho and possibly M?Bia --- But here's hoping!!!

Can’t we put this Moutinho crap to bed? It’s getting very very boring. I’ll bet the amount that Derek wins on us not signing him and us only signing 3 players (including Jacobsen) for less than £5mil

I hope we get players like Cahill Arteta Jags Lescott Pienaar. We have built a team of players who were passed over by bigger clubs who came to us and made a name for themselves. Yes this has been an shocking few months that have left me going grey and bald but if Moyes can bring in a few players who want to come to us and put their all in because they have been passed over well I will accept a player who is trying. So if he gets 10 Bosmans and they work I say well done. On another note I think Vince Grella who blackburn are trying to sign would be a great player for us. Like Tiny he is an Aussie who doesnt like to lose. And his foot is still attached.

Why not ask Doddy.
He seems to know everything about our budget and number of players to be signed.
Personally i’m with the lower brigade, bordering on the zilch spending.
But then again 20 mill is not a lot and neither is 30 mill come to that.
Who knows Doddy may be right and we may splash 40 mill.
Hope this helps.

Given the time factor and that there’s no obvious big-name signing (forget Riera) on the immediate horizon (let’s not mention the months and months since the end of last season!) I just don’t see who they could buy or even how they could spend that much even if they wanted to!
Last ditch for Moutinho?
Go for Arshavin?
Grab Wagner Love?
Even M’bia seems to have gone off the radar.

Basically, I’m clueless...........mebbe I should work for EFC?

The clock is ticking, but still time to do the deals.

I reckon that if you add the Johnson and McFadden money together ( £15m ), take off Pienaar at £2.5m and add on about £6m you will be about right.... that equals £18.5m.

Enough for Moutinho and a load of Frees or perhaps M’bia, the fella from Young Boys ( what an hilarious namefor a Club! ) Smith, and some small fry purchases.

Reckon the latter is more likely, but I live in hope..........

If reports today are to be believed and we have only offered to take SWP on loan then we are clearly stone broke. Why on earth would we not offer the 10 million (even if it had to be in instalments) if we had it? I would certainly prefer him to Riera...oh this is so infuriating, sell, sell, sell

I’m puzzled..........first of all I think signing the Dane for free is another good Moyes signing....potentially better than either Hibbert or Neville (time will tell) but regardless of whether he’s better or not......if he’s only position is right back then I’m puzzled......we already have TH/PN so why do we need a 3rd player for the same position......I know Neville (unfortunately) gets played in mid sometimes but surely DM knows that’s a last resort..........the two players have signed contract extensions so I don’t understand the need (and posters on here have stated that we need a R/Defender)......can somebody clarify please?

This is not intended to be a go at Neville etc, just a better understanding of why we need a third right defender.

I think 20 million is a huge amount to spend in five days in relation to simply organising large scale transfers. We have not been able to sort out a single transfer yet at any price, 20 million would suggest at least two major signings and a loan deal or two.

Personally I think we need to buy Wright-Phillips and M’Bia, and move Arteta back into the middle, with M’Bia playing a more defensive role. I can’t realistically see us buying more than three decent players, and frankly at this stage I’ll be happy with that...Kenwright has a wonderful way of lowering expectations. Nil Satis...don’t make me laugh!

It might seem like its afer the horse has bolted but im not gutted to lose out on Riera. I’ll very happily watch him become another over-priced liverpool squad player. He was poor in his spell at City, lacking pace or the ability to beat people, and frankly I don’t see him having the work ethic of an Everton player. Let him join his Spanish mates.

We need to focus on watching the space!!

Refresh....refresh...refresh!! Who’d be an Everton fan?!

Martin, Phil Neville played with an ankle injury at the weekend and Tony Hibbert is long term injured.
The Dane has only been signed on a one-year deal so he's just a squad player to cover all the injuries we get.

Martin:

Moyesie has finally lost it. They have come up with a cunning plan to play one goalkeeper and 10 right backs against Pompey on Saturday.

Next in will be Stephen Carr, Steve Finnan, Gary Neville on loan, Julio Belletti, Cafu on a loan to buy, Tiger McLaughlin is coming down from Scotland, Shaggy Stevens is making a comeback and Neil McDonald is mulling over an offer from us. Hibbert will play on crutches and Dan Gosling will make his Premier League debut.

Moyesie got the idea from Walter Smith who once sent out an Everton team ( against Leicester or Forest in 1999 ) with 8 central defenders ( true by the way ) and they managed ok!!!!

Derek, this may seem inconsistent with my post on another thread but I do still believe that Davey will spend that £20M in this window. For all the crap PR we know that the Chairman was prepared to authorise bids for several players in the £10M+ bracket and Davey is brilliant at bringing them out of the hat at the very last minute. Furthermore, I think BB will want to have something to sooth the radicals with at the EGM! I still hold the faith but the preachers aren?t very good at putting it over!

Martin, regards to "why a right back" - I understand your question, believe me, I?ve asked the same thing. Obviously DM is still looking for a replacement for Cars, but with his signings (remember, he wants 6 or 7!!!) he wants to build the squad to a size that each of the players knows that they NEED to be performing or else they will not play because there is class behind them on the bench just waiting for their chance. We can?t progress as a club until that happens.

Currently at Left back we have Nuno, Baines, and Lescott - arguably the deepest position for us, no need for a new one. At Center we have Lescott, Yobo, and Jags. 3 players of starting caliber, so if someone?s form dips, they know they will be on the bench. Right back has Pip and Hibbert. Good enough, but there is nothing wrong with having someone else to push those two for playing time.

On that note, that is why we REALLY need some defensive midfielders, as we don?t have any, much less any depth. We also really need a class GK to push Howard too. I love timmy, but we need some depth behind him in case his form dips or he gets injured (I read an article where timmy said the exact same thing, he welcomes some competition because it will make him a better player and Everton a better team).

Back to right back though - I just hope it doesn?t mean that we will be seeing Pip in the midfield more... I refuse to believe that is the story, but we must recognize that unless we pick up some players, Pip or Jags could see significant time in the midfield this year.

What we really need is ONE big name signing to excite the fans...we should go for broke and buy Moutinho plus one other decent player...say Appiah or M’Bia then we would forgive DM getting the Jacobsens and the like to bolster the numbers..We DESERVE some new hero to cheer up the fans and bring the best out of our squaddies..

No no, you make a valid point Paul, we would indeed struggle by having too many African Internationals in the team - having said that, we may have no option than to take M’Bia or Appiah for that matter.

Either would be a good buy but I’d prefer European players purely because of the ACON factor as well.

Do you remember last seasons transfer window when we thought that we were gunna start the season with naff all proper signings and AJ alone upfront? Then, out of nowhere, the report that we were spending £21M on Manny Fernandes and Yakubu? I couldn't believe it coz I thought we were skint then too. Okay, Manny only came on loan but still Yakubu was well worth the wait! Blues, have patience... trust Moyes; it only takes a second to score a goal! And it only takes a day to lift our hearts!

Derek- are you being serious?

I can’t see us spending more than 5mil, and thats’ prob never gonna happen. We will lose out to SWP as other clubs want to actually buy him, not loan. We are now way down the pecking order, even Sunderland out do us, with endless cash and the stadium. How has this happended to a club like Everton.

A local journalist told me last week that most of Everton?s £10M+ bids are phony. If one is accepted they insist on unacceptable ?drip? terms. If they are accepted, they offer the player crap money and if, by any chance, he says OK, Moysey says he?s got character flaws that halt the deal.
The whole club is a deck of cards.
My bet would be around an £8mill spend!

Richard Dodd - We may have made offers in excess of £10m for various players but in reality its a bit like going into a sweet shop and offering 25p for a 50p Mars Bar, you can go outside and tell your mates that you tried to buy it but the shop keeper wouldn’t sell.
In reality you knew all along you couldn’t buy and all you have done is hack the shopkeeper off with your ridiculous bids.

I agree with Henry ? I think Moyes has been in on the deceit all along. He and Bullshit Billy are joined at the hip and I fully expect him to be wheeled out at the EGM in defence of the Chairman.
Oh - I suspect he?ll actually spend the AJ money (he worked him out to his master?s orders) so sell down to £10M.
