Neville now a midfielder-official

Comments (22)

Phil Neville is now officially a midfielder. The ex-Manchester United `star` has won his battle with David Moyes and is now officially listed by the club as a midfielder. Obviously the signing today of right full-back, Lars Jacobsen, has allowed Moyes to accede to his Captain Marvel`s desire `to lead from the middle` and, perhaps, provides a clue as to the manager`s thinking on team re-construction.

Good decision or bad? Guess I know the answer to that one already!

Moyes did state, when purchasing Neville, that he saw Neville?s ideal position in midfield. Only now, with Carsley?s departure, will Neville get a regular starting position in the centre of the park. With attacking fullbacks it looks like a good move to have Neville in the defensive midfielder role.

Phil Neville has always been officially listed by the club as a midfielder, at least in the squad list on the official website. I’ve always found it a bit strange, especially when Moyes stated he saw him as a right back. Personally i don’t think Phil cares where he plays, he’s just one of those guys that wants to be involved and wants to make a difference. I would rather have him in the Carsley role than Jagz but that isn’t saying much (and that’s no offence to either, i think Jagz has proven an excellent central defender and i actually think Phil is a pretty damn good right back and has set up his fair share of goals from that position).

Look at it this way: would you rather have the Yak in defensive mid? No, coz we need him up front to score goals. Lescott, Yobo, Jags? No, we need them at CB to stop the opposition scoring. Etc.

Having Pip in defensive mid allows the other players to play in their preferred positions. You could say our captain is ’bringing the best out of his players’. Quite a thought that eh?

It maybe a good move if he learns not to hoof the fucking thing every time he gets the ball. Surely it cant be that hard for him to do a job, or for Moyes to demand it of him, play that break the play up role effectively and keep it simple feeding Arteta and Ossie etc to do their jobs. Don't want to be too negative but I'm not sure he's got the composure, still it's looking more and more likely isn't it?

Phil Neville has always been officially listed as a midfielder - this hasn't just changed since we signed Jacobsen.

Its a smart move buying a right back anyway because theres a distinct possibility we wont sign a defensive midfielder and at least Pip can actually play there - he may not be Claude Makelele but he?s certainly not the worst in that position either.

Never mind Neville in midfield, we all know he?s shite in that position. What I find absolutely incredible and TOTALLY unacceptable is the fact that we have alledgedly made a £12mil... yes £12 mil bid for a player that is now going to the RED SHITE for £8mil but we are finding it difficult to offer £9mil for Wright-Philips ? a player of PROVEN OUALITY... y?know, the type of QUALITY which Moyes says he wants to bring to the club. £12 mil for Riera ? a complete failure on his last sojurn in the Premiership.... or £9mil for SWP... seems pretty simple to me.

ALL liars at Everton including Moyes. He did have my sympathy until this week but he has now joined in the piss taking!!! A full-back no none has ever heard of and phantom £12 mil bids for a player who in reality has only cost £8mil... fucking joke so he can now FUCK OFF as well!!

N.B. Anyone else notice that any talk of M?Bia signing has gone quiet since he said he WANTED to join us. They must have all shit themselves when they heard that!!

FUCKING JOKE THE LOT OF THEM!!

I think the biggest problem was Neville and Carsley together in midfield. Personally I don’t mind the idea of Neville playing there now.

You see what you’ve done there Brian, is you’ve used the name ’Phil Neville’ and the word ’midfielder’ in the same sentence. According to ’Lanscombe’s English Grammar’ (1878) this is not an acceptable use of the English language. I think its a rule we should all adhere to on Toffeeweb. (My example above is excepted because of my use of inverted commas). Can we please make this a rule of this website along with the usual ’no abuse etc. etc.’?

If we actually manage to move Mikel into a more central role then if Neville plays the Carsley role there will be someone to take the ball from him so he won?t need to resort to a longer ball. I think people should lay off Neville. As per my post above the guy gives 100% for the cause and actually CARES. Moyes has built his squad on this and has introduced a fair amount of ability into it too. The guy definitely deserves a lot more respect than he?s given from these pages.

Neville seems like a nice guy and WANTS to play for and win things with Everton but the bloke is not very good in midfeild, poor distribution and bad tackling are not attributes i would want in a holding/defensive midfeilder.

Surely there’s some one out there who can tackle and pass!! not to much to ask?

I?m a Londoner who works for Sky TV, and I?ve just seen that James Milner has handed in a transfer request... surely he?d be a better bet than this Riera Dude who has already indicted he?d rather join the unholy mob from across Stanley Park.

Please Gents

Get real, Milner has already been at Villa on loan and O'Neill watched him last night at Coventry. If it is not Villa it will be the Red Rats from across the park leaving us to pick up the overpriced Riera.

Our Captain (God help us) seems incapable of passing a football to his team-mates. He also gives away too many free kicks with reckless challenges. It is safer to have him playing wide at full back rather than centrally because free kicks on our goal from the wings are less deadly.
Sorry Pip, the best use we can make of you is as one of our growing number of right backs!

I agree with Mark Stone.

Neville has his obvious flaws, ie generally when in possession.

He wasn’t helped in this area when playing with Carsley, as Cars never wanted the ball and so forced Neville to take the responsibility himself.

This year, if playing with either Rodwell or Ossie or "new signing" these players look for the ball themselves and will thus lessen the amount of times Neville will have the ball, which in turn will limit his mistakes.

What I don’t want to see is Neville and Jags.

Sadly, I too now think that Milner may end up at the Redshite, even more so with Barry staying at Villa. Although having said that, surely they?re signing Riera to play in that position?

Now call me mad but I remember the same kind of talk when Carsley started playing more regularly for us as a defensive midfielder and how we were going to lose every game with him there because he was sh*t roll on two years and now we wish he was still there.

My point is Carsley was an average player who excelled in that position thanks to our style of play and because of the confidence installed in him by David Moyes.

Now we have Neville who is ok not the best option but like someone said at this point in time our only realistic option. I think we should give him a fair go.

Ideally though I would love it if we could just buy somebody its beyond ridiculous now.

Phil Neville taking responsibility as a right back does not mean hoofing the ball up field
against BBurn he was awful I admire his
professionalism but this is not enough for me
and jagielka is,nt any better at distributing the ball either as is jobo that leaves lescott who
shows any confidence on the ball sad but true

Neville is a much better holding midfielder than right-back in my opinion Moyes should move mikky into the centre of midfield with Neville playing the "Makelele role" and this New bloke Jacobsen should play right-back even when Hibbert comes back from injury because Hibbert is even worse than Neville in that position and moyes should buy SWP from chelsea for a bargain 8 mil to accomadate the right wing position where Mikky plays now
