According to Setanta & SkySports we will be signing yet another defender on a free transfer by the name of Zayatte who can play Centre Back and Right Back!!!!! Which can only mean one thing to me = Phil Neville will now be our Midfielder .Its starting to look like quantity not quality...

Strong rumours are going around Terry these two right backs are actually being signed because Neville is due to have an ankle operation.

It’s been plaguing him and therefore Moyes needed cover.

However this Zayatte, I’ve heard, is capable of playing DM midfield too, so if needs must...

Did anyone else think that Bassong looked pretty good for the barcodes last night....?

Question has to be asked, did we know Pip needed an ankle op before we gave him a new 4 year deal?

The fact is, We lost both Stubbs and Garnder last year one after the other so we do need central defensive cover.

If these free deals enable us to sign one or two bigger names before the weekend is over then we will have done good business overall.

With players coming back then it will mean that we have cover in most positions apart from goalkeeper really.

Neville is gonna end up in midfield, probable with Arteta, Osman, Pienaar and hopefully a new signing.

Cahill will then support Yak.

Looks good on paper, here’s hoping.

So Anthony, if Neville will be in midfield with Arteta, Osman, Pienaar and a new signing PLUS Cahill supporting the Yak, does that mean we’ll only play 3 at the back? Cause I make that a 6-man midfield you’ve come up with...

Very good, well spotted Billy, I did however mean the first choice midfield UNTIL Cahill returns, hence me saying;

"Cahill will THEN support the yak".

Until Tim is back then I feel it will be that midfield.

Even when eveyone is fit, I think the only midfielders Moyes will play will be out of Nevill, Cahill, Osman, Pienaar, Arteta and any possible new signing as I don’t feel AVDM will be given a fair chance, he will just be a bench warmer once again in my eyes.

Although I hope not but I can’t help thinking that if he signs the left winger he is looking for then Arteta will be the other winger permanantly.

Looking at things from a different perspective (the other side of the pitch), we’ve now got Baines, Valente, Lescott, Jacobsen and Neville who can all operate (or cover) at left back.

Sunderland are looking to sign one more player before the deadline - apparently a left back. Maybe Leighton is on his way out?

An ankle operation for Neville?

Someone should tell him that the growth on his ankle is a "foot", it’s meant to be there, and learning how to use it comes in useful in this game.

But yes, hearing about another defender signing makes me want to bury my head in my hands.

Lescott up front, anyone?

Anthony,

you really can’t use Gardner as any kind of name in an argument or putting forward a point - he never played a single game for us. I’m not even entirely sure that at any point he was considered "cover"....

Jeremy,

regardless of whether he played or not, he was useful to have as cover and the fact is, he was an experienced centre half readily available should we get an injury or two in that position.

My point is that when Stubbs left, we brought Gardener in as cover, he was never needed (Luckily) and left.

Now we have no experienced centre halves to even warm the bench so if Jags and Yobo get crocked we are fooked, which is why signing another centre half is a positive move.
