Cap on foreigners?

Comments (13)

As I understand it, clubs in the Premier League can play as many foreigners as they like provided they are EU nationals (see Arsenal). But is there a limit on non-EU foreigners and, if so, what is it? We already have several non-EU foreigners (Yobo, the Yak, Pienaar, Anichebe - or is he regarded as English)? Add Castillo, possible the Guinean fullback and possibly Obinna - surely we won't be able to play all of them together?

I know there used to be a rule where you could only field 3 non EU players ? but with Howard, Yobo, Pienaar & Yak all playing last season this must have increased.

So with signing Castillo & possibly Obinna & Zayatte this would almost double the amount of non EU players in the squad. Is there any point in signing players who cant play due to the quotas involved?

Somebody please confirm the new rule please!!!!

Pienaar and Anichebe probably will have European passports, Dutch and British.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Obinna has dual nationality -- Nigerian and Italian -- which means he doesn’t have to registered as a non-EU player.

Yakubu and possibly may have dual citizenship, English, considering the amount of time they have spent in England.

It’s not an issue.

It’s illegal under EU to introduce a rule limiting the number of EU nationals on a team.

As an extension of this, it is also illegal under EU law to limit of number of players from countries that have trade agreements with the EU (as shown by the Kolpak ruling, which has resulted in as many as 7 South Africans playing for an English cricket team). Such countries include Nigeria, South Africa and Guinea.

I don’t know if such a rule does still exists (I suspect it doesn’t), but if it did then it would not be able to restrict players from these countries. Hence, we’re fine.

Yobo I think took dual nationality last year, having been here for 5 yrs plus, the Yak must be nearly there as well. Pienaar I think has Dutch nationality due to his years spent at Ajax.

I remember from Howard's days at Man Utd he had to take a Hungarian passport to play there: I think he had this through his Grandparents.

Big Vic, although born in Nigeria, has lived here for years and so has a British passport despite playing for Nigeria.

Another question I’ve been trying to work out the answer to: How many overseas loans are allowed in the Premier League? (I was wondering if we loaned the Nigerian lad, could we loan Zigic as well).

I’ve heard it quoted that Premier League clubs are only allowed 2 loans, and somebody on another board stated that if we loaned Obinna we couldn’t loan anybody else.

However, a quick look at the Premier League rules state that this restriction applies to temporary transfers between 2 english clubs. I can’t find a mention of temporary transfers with overseas clubs anywhere.

Everton of course had 4 loans last year at once (Gardner, Pienaar, Gravesen and Fernandes), but only one was from England. Unless the rules have changed, we seem to be OK.

Anybody know for sure the situation?

There’s no limits on players from outside the EU just so long as they reach the criteria (% of caps etc), you can have 100 in theory.

City have a decent side now. Kompany looked the real deal as a holding player on Sunday and was cheap. We have great scouts seriously. Why weren?t we in for him? They have two great wingers in SWP and Petrov. Johnson and Ireland as their attacking centre mid. The defense is solid with Dunne, Richards, Tel Bain whatever you call him and a decent goalkeeper in Hart. Average enough full backs and the jury is out on Jo. £18m is a bit much. Imagine we had money and could buy like them. Anyone know if Richard Branson has a bit of spare change and wants to invest in a football club?
