UEFA rankings

According to UEFA, we're lagging behind Newcastle, Middlesborough and Bolton.

How are these things worked out!?

"The next best English side in the rankings are Newcastle United (14th). Other clubs in the top 50 are Middlesbrough (31st), Tottenham Hotspur (33rd), Bolton Wanderers (47th) and Everton (50th). Like Newcastle these placings are on the strength of performances in the Uefa Cup. Of Scottish clubs Rangers are 24th [they may have made the second seeding pot had they qualified for this season's Champions League] and Celtic 41st. The draw for the Uefa Cup is tomorrow, also in Monaco."

As it says: "the places are on the strentgh of performances in the UEFA Cup"

All those sides have performed better, or at least more regularly, than Everton in the UEFA Cup in recent seasons.

Boro got the final remember?

How can you say Bolton have performed better or more regularly than Everton in Europe. We’ve been in europe more regularly and got further than them! And how are Newcastle 14th and we’re 50th?? Aren’t the league positions included because we finished above every one of them teams!

Newcastle have been in the Champions League so accrued points back them I presume - Bolton bought theirs in a brown paper bag when Allardyce was manager.

Anthony Millington,

We haven’t been in Europe more regularly than Bolton. They were in it last season same as us (which was our only time in it recently), and they had been in it a couple of seasons prior. Moreover, last season they got exactly as far as we did by getting to the last 16. So I would say their being 3 places above us is fair. Kind of shows how ’great’ our UEFA Cup run was last year huh?

Als, there was a period where Newcastle were getting into Europe consistently every year for a while.

Domestic league placing doesn’t have anything to do with it.

They will have paid something yes, signing on fees to the players (possibly), agents fees (definately), and possibly a fee to the clubs for the loans but this is only a possibility - the likelihood is that EFC havent had to pay any fees to the clubs as we will be taking on the players wages.

To me it looks like the English players are the biggest money-grabbers of the lot. Man City probably offered him a massive wad of cash that we couldnt hope to match. Look how many English players have snubbed us over the years. The only ones we’ve been successful in signing are ones from the Championship.

Well fuck that, my expectations and standards are a damn sight fucking higher than that.

Not true Alan, Arsenal dont pay big bucks either, they have a very sensible wage structure. Not every club pays huge wages because they simply cant afford it - you need to calm down a bit mate, and maybe lower your expectations in line with the size of the club you support.

Everton are not one of the biggest clubs in the country in any respect, financially or otherwise.

To Alan Codd:

If your reasoning for describing EFC as a calamity club is that we did not pay £80K/week for SWP then I fail to follow it. Quite simply this is a ridiculous amount of money to pay and would destroy the sensible wage structure in place at Everton. Good luck to him but if and when there is financial meltdown at Man City which looks increasingly likely then he won’t be getting a penny. As for hard cash, I very much doubt too much hard cash has transferred so far.

I doubt any other club would have acceded to wage demands like this.

Speaking personally I would rather EFC was managed on a more sensible basis - as it is - than this Leeds type excess which places massive risk on a single dodgy individual.

Also I’d much rather players came to Everton with at least some semblance of caring about the football side of things rather than just who pays the most cash.

Move on.

Just my opinion.

Joe, I find it interesting that you think EFC is being run sensibly; let's look at it: NTL deal, Fortress Sports Fund, Kings Dock, NO marketing presence in the city centre, Sold every asset we have, Goodison mortgaged to the rafters, Selling players only to replace them with loan deals, the continuous lies and propaganda ? oh and did I mention splitting the fanbase in two with the Kirkby deal which again was rolled out as "Deal of the Century", a FREE world class stadium which can hold concerts and other events.

Also Stephen M'bia was quite open on his motives for wanting to join Everton.

And if you are still niave enough to think players "care" anymore then you need to wake up.

As for financial melt down at City, isn't that what's happening at Everton? Oh that's right ? no one knows, our "sensible" chairman won't tell us.

Feels like a calamity club to me. Signing players who I cannot believe David Moyes knows can cut it in the Premiership because we our so desperate for numbers.
Going to a stadium, or not, that in our heart of hearts nobody wants, because it is the only deal on the table.
What other clubs in England have got themselves into this state. Not Villa, not Portsmouth, not even Sunderland? Even crisis club city are buying. Yes we finished 5th last season and Moyes and the lads could not have done better but that all counts for nothing except a few Uefa Cup games that we don?t have enough players for.
I agree it?s madness to pay 80K to SWP but I believe we were only interested out of desperation. Whatever the stories are with Moutinho and M?bia we?ve clearly been wasting our time.
I suspect the fault lies partly with Moyes but mostly with BK and his board of top businessmen.
Help!
ATB to Moyes and the boys.

The last time I looked, pretty much every club in the Premier League is in debt Alan - Chelsea and Man Utd moreso than anyone else, so if you’re worried about EFC being in the same boat I’m afraid thats the reality of modern football in this country.

I would much prefer us to be in the black as you would, and all the things you state above are true. The Chairman is not going to tell us/anyone about the financial state of the club, what business would do that?

All this stuff about caring for clubs, and wanting to play for the shirt is also from the dark ages, so the sooner people stop worrying about motives the better. Its dog eat dog out there and you wont find me in a tin of pedigree chum.

Alan:

I don’t believe *any* football club is run sensibly - it’s not a sensible "business" by any definition.

Neither is it sensible for me or you to devote so much time and emotion to follwoing this ridiculous pastime either.

Did I mention "caring" about the club? I don’t think I did. I said caring about the football.

Clearly players *do* care, else why would they want to play international football which brings no direct revenue.

My point was that I want to see the type of player who would move off a highly paid bench or out of the stand in order to play first team football.

Personally, I don’t believe that applies to this player. You can say that it’s market forces and why should someone take a pay cut, but beyond a certain level how much can someone spend and how much is ego or status about money.

I think there are players at EFC who are paid less than they could get elsewhere - although still fantastically well - but play for different reasons than just money and that was my point.

We need to remember its not simply a matter of throwing money at decent players and receiving the glory that follows. The term sustainable growth was mentioned above and I fully agree with that.

Spurs and Newcastle to name a few have thrown huge amounts at players for years now, but because they did not have the right management, structure, and ethos about them, they never managed to reach a level of consistent relevative success that Everton have. And that is remember with players like Shearer, Berbatov, and a whole host of exotic international buys in the £10 million + bracket.

Saying you won't settle for second best is not what it is all about. We fuck up our wage structure, we fuck up our team ethos.

You’ve decided that I’m basing my opinion on the crap that the club churns out though.

Nothing of the sort. I’m basing my opinion on the fact that I know the kind of progress you, and dozens like you, "DEMAND" is fantasy football. We took how many seasons to go from arse-end of the league merchants to a club regarded as a regular challenger for European footie of one stripe or another?.

To do that we only had to get the better of the rest of the mid-order Prem league teams and, lets face it, there is some real dross there.

To take the next step we have to start beating the top 4 teams in the Prem and be capable of taking on the best in Europe. You, seriously and honestly, think we can do that in a couple of seasons?.

I’ll tell you this mate....there are a set of fans in Liverpool who scream, wail, bleat and moan when they dont get there own way. They protest, try and bring down their board and try and get their manager sacked at regular intervals. They are a disgrace and have brought their club to the point of being a national joke.

You say your no kopite?. Stop trying so hard to frigging copy one then!

Football is a pretty short career and like most of us in our own jobs, players cash in and move wherever the wages pay more. Some players stay at the likes of EFC because they can get a regular wage and they have found their level, but if they are ambitious and good enough they want to win trophies so they will move on to the ambitious clubs who win the trophies. Our players would not command big fees and they know where their bread is buttered... don't kid yourself that loyalty has anything to do with it. Agents and other clubs will soon woo any lad with real potential away from clubs like Middlesboro, Fulham, Man City, Bolton and lets face it US!! Why do you think players don't feel honoured to play for EFC... they don't pay enough and they are not ambitious. Get your heads out of the sand and think clearly. Loyalty comes between liars and lust in the dictionary.
