Uefa Cup Draw

Comments (80)

As the last thread about the Uefa Cup ended up being about SWP, I thought I'd start a new one. Bert Kassies has already updated his website to take account of tonight's results and I've tried to work out the five unseeded teams who will be in our 'group'. By my reckoning we will be drawn against one of the following teams:-

  • Vitoria Guimaraes (Portugal)
  • Standard Liege (Belgium)
  • Brann Bergen (we all know where that is)
  • AC Bellinzona (Switzerland)
  • Omonia Nicosia (Cyprus)
Bert says that he doesn't know all the rules about how the 'groups' are decided so the above might be miles out. However, if it does turn out to be right, I reckon the first two would be difficult but we'd have a great chance against any of the others.

From my workout, those are the five unseeded teams in our group.
Dinamo Zagreb (Cro), Standard Liège (Bel), NEC Nijmegen (Ned), AC Bellinzona (Sui), Omonia Nicosia (Cyp)

Anyway, there should be an official group list a few hours before the draw on uefa site.(i.e. it may appears anytime..)

SWP to Man City?

Good luck to him, what a shambles of an outfit they are. Probably not as much as a shambles as our outfit though.

You could see his dilemma, do I go to this disorganised team or that disorganised team. Ah stuff it, I’ll go wherever offers the best cash...

Obviously from a football point of view it would be best to get Honka but it looks a difficult trip.
I think I’d prefer NEC Nijmegen as I don’t think Dutch football is too hot these days (look at FC Twente!).
How good are Napoli these days? They finished 8th in the league last season (lost more games than they won) and only got in through the Intertoto.

Isn’t Saha injured? That’s why Frazer Campbell has been playing? It’s getting exciting now, at this stage Moyes knows were in the shitter, so he’s making as many panic buys as he can before monday lol. Saha is a good player and will give us an experienced stiker upfront as they Yak is our only other senior striker, hopefully we got him for cheap.

Un-frickin-believable....

We just have to hope that the Toffees remember the lessons of last year?s campaign and are in some decent form when it comes to this tie.

On the other hand, Liege were unable to score against Liverpool over two legs and didn?t exactly threaten in either leg, so all is not lost. We just need to keep our heads and play our own (passing) game.

@Jeremy Benson

Yes I did watch both legs and I stand by my judgement. Liege played out of their skins without seriously threatening Liverpool’s goal. The plaudits they have received have been due to their performance against the stature of their opponents as opposed to any fabulous play on their behalf. Over two legs, playing against a team expecting to coast to victory, they failed to score a single goal.

Would you have been as impressed if they had performed similarly (but gone out) against Metallist Kharkiv? I think not.

In some ways, it wasn’t too disimilar to our tie with Fiorentina last year. We were the underdogs, should have won, but came up short.

If anything, their performance against Liverpool should ensure that we don’t underestimate them like we did with Kharkiv last year.

Neil, it happened because we are Everton, thats all, its always the case.

Anyhow, if you had been told it would be Liege would you be bothered? we should be able to take them and they probably have a reasonable sized ground and will be easy to get to - so should be decent support and we can get behind the lads.

Put £20 on Saha to get the winner - and someone buy Fellaini!

This is a tough, tough draw. One thing we can boast, though, is the ability to score goals. And now that we might have the option of Saha as well as Yak, Vaughan and Victor then I fancy us to get through. But we need a solid midfield to be sure. So pull your fecking finger out Moyes and sort it once and for all.

Calm down FFS, just because the red shower of shite made a meal of getting past Liege does not mean we?ll struggle!
The Belgian league is not great and with a balanced side (e.g. midfield full of midfielders in midfield etc!) we can comfortably win through.
With a rocking Goodison in the first leg, with a hungry Yak being fed nicely, we could put it to bed in 1st leg.
With new players bedded in (and Cahill back too) by then I have absolute confidence. COYB!

Lets not make Liege out to be world beaters. The reason they looked a decent team the other night was mainly down to the fact that Liverpool were terrible. I can?t see us playing as badly as they did. If we want to make an impression in Europe, what better way than to beat Liege. I?m sure if we progress we will meet teams far superior than the Belgian champions. Let's not have another Villarreal where we talked ourselves out of the competition before the game had been played.

Liège was better then the RS over two games and very unlucky not to go through. A very, very tough draw.

I have lived in Maastricht for some years, that’s about 15 miles from Liège. I visited some of their games back then. Their ground can hold about 30000 people and will be packed. They have very passionate support, be aware of hooliganism. Liège isn’t one of the finer cities of Belgium, but then again some people would say that about Liverpool as well.

I will be looking to get as many tickets as possible but I think Liège only sells tickets to registered fans these days, so I fear I won’t get many. Will keep you informed if I can get my hands on a batch of tickets, will sell them to blues for face value and two pints ;)

Oh, by the way: there are several pubs INSIDE the ground.

At this stage last year, Blackburn thought that Larissa was a good looking bird ready for a good going over...they ended getting mugged big time.

It just goes to show, you need to beat the team in front of you (and let the RS do the talking about winning the league/CL).

Seeding in Europe is based on performance in UEFA competitions over a number of years, so Standard Liege, despite being current Belgian champions were always going to be unseeded, as it’s been Anderlecht & Club Brugge who have dominated for years over there and played consistently in Europe.

Most Belgian teams are on a par with the FL championship, but Liege are probably their best team for some time and ran away with title last season.

Whilst some of us might start fretting about this game, they will have to play as well as they did against Liverpool and we have to underperform, for us to be in real danger.

There are far bigger clubs in this competition to worry about in due course - AC Milan anybody?
