The Mail Bag

Our new Number 9

Comments (36)

Just seen on the Official Site that they have given Saha the No 9. Maybe next season if he scores 20 goals and proves his fitness, but this for me is kinda the final straw. The Royal Blue No 9 shirt is something to be revered and cherished ? not tossed to a Manure reject.

Maybe I'm being over sensitive, but the first two must be turning in their graves. They could have given him any number, why 9.

Makes sense to me. Yakubu obviously has his reasons for sticking with 22, and we really should have a No 9 in the team. Let's see how he shapes up, eh? (At least you did not include the galumphing oaf in your list... )

Because tradition whether right or wrong does not matter any more.

It's a shirt with a number on it and that is all it ever will be.

I can name you many players who wore it who were not up to the standard of the above so what the hell does it matter?

Obviously Moyes doesn?t give a hoot for tradition and numbers.

(That?s my forth anti-Moyes statement in the last two days. The tractor beam of the anti-Moyes brigade must be getting stronger)

i agree we have had some brilliant number nines down the years but the squad numbers now have seriously damaged the traditions of the numbers 1-11

He might have been a galumphing oaf (I take it you meant Big Dunc Michael?) but he scored some vital goals and wore his 9 with fucking pride.

Not really the biggest problem we have is it?

If he wears it 20 times this year and bangs in ten I?ll live with the outrage...

WTF!
This is outrageous - I would much rather vaughan was given the number 9 - not some Man U castoff foreign mercenary who I guarantee will not give two shits about us.

SICK! (again)

Way over sensitive. Every club has a tradition that goes with its number nine. A reality check I’m afraid but we are no different to the liverpool, newcastle, spurs, man u.

Such nonsense, backward thinking, will hold us back

What a ridiculous thing to worry about in our current situation. You’re being way over sensitive. he’s a striker, our number 9 is free, what else would we do?

I guessed Michael was referring to Beattie but what do I know?

Let’s reserve judgement on Saha for the time being. He’s always been a great player and a fantastic finisher. If we get him fit he’ll be a real weapon.

I do agree about it being a shame that Vaughan was overlooked however but I think he needs to prove his fitness first as well. He’s got a lot of time on his side and he could possibly be a future no.9 to add to that illustrious list.

Rumours gathering is that Joey barton is off to a top ten club, be just our luck to have to settle for this horrible twat.

To all the anti-Moyes people out there at the moment... Do any of you really believe this whole fuck-up is anything to do with him? Do we really want him to leave? I doubt very much...

Have you seen the look on his face recently, he looks as bemused as we are... It’s going to be another of those ’pull together’ seasons where we end up just outside of the UEFA cup places with promise next time around of more the following year... We are a yo-yo team, thankfully a top half yo-yo team these days.

I would like to know though why we seem to be constantly looking for a defensive midfielder, why not simply a playmaker like a Fabragas, do we always have to be backing off?

Alan, they say on sky, that it is a top 10 club, but we are not in the top 10 of the league, so it can’t be us.

Are we seriously nit-picking that much about who wears what at the moment?
I want a player who wants to wear the blue on their back and couldnt care less if it was 9 or 99....

Goals per game ( most being sub ) is 42 in 124 for united. Which means he can hit the back of the onion bag...

That list says that the last time we had a decent number 9 was when we were winning trophys!! I say give the guy the number 9, its a signal of intent and faith. Lets not forget it "seems" at the moment that hes taken a pay-cut and a move to a team further down the league rather than warm the bench at united and collect the medal at the end of the season.

My mind is now on the possible thought that it may be us whose in talks with Barton!! Lets worry about that!!!!!

Barton said(according to some paper I cant care to remember reading) that Portsmouth would always pay him if he wanted so, luckily, he wont be coming here.

Steve the only one of that quartet you mention who i would like to see at Everton is Mbia. The other three are injured, useless and a complete head the ball, respectively!

If Louis Saha can score goals for us he can wear my own shirt if he likes. We have had worse #9s through the years. Incientally, for most of his career,Dixie Dean didn’t wear #9.

Barton has done his time, ok he’s been a prick ( how many amongst us havent ) He wants to put it behind him and play football
Some of the self righteous twats who are desperate to name him to the wall must never have stepped out of line . . . .ever

Surely everyone should have the chance to redeem themselves ?

Given our current situation J Barton and EFC may just be the answer to each others problems

If Michael Owen won’t accept a paycut at Newcastle from his current £100k a week, why on Earth would he come to us? Anyway, where would he play with Saha and the Yak? On midfield?!

And as for Saha being no.9, so what? If you’d ever seen Mick Ferguson, Rod Belfit or Bernie Wright (not sure if any were actually no. 9’s), you’d understand that it’s the quality not the number that counts

Please god no!

Joey Barton is a very good footballer but the bloke is a complete cunt.

Dave if you think he is the answer to our problems then your way of the mark. Do you honestly think he’ll be a good boy living back in liverpool, worst place for him and it wouldn’t be long before he heaped shame on our club!!

I’m all for giving people chances but this twats had a few already and shown no remorse.

decision to give saha the number 9 a commercial one? They think the no 9 shirt will sell more shirts than no 39 because of that tradition, no matter who wears it. so give it to someone who COULD (a big could, as i’m sceptical) turn into a good no9 for the club and hopefully sell a few more shirts in the process? There are plenty of us who haven’t them yet, They think Saha will sell more than Castillo and they think Saha 9 will sell more than Saha 39.

They also think he is the big name signing of the summer, hence no-one else coming in. And that is a huge worry.
