Billy Liar?

Comments (12)

We operate in a business world.

Business people always give optimistic statements ("Watch this space") even when they are facing difficult times or are looking for investment or setting up partnerships (Tesco). Just as you see people losing jobs saying "I had no idea", you also see people in a daze like City fans this morning.

Markets are all about confidence and illusion and it is no different for a club.

Fans who expect anything else are naive to say the least and if you can show me a club that "tells it like it is" to their fans, I'd be amazed. We are now customers of a business not owners... not even shareholders. Like it or not, that is the reality.

The people BK is talking to in statements are creditors, esco and the market in geneal... not a few folk on a website. Disempowering I know but I can't recall the Moores dynasty consulting the fans. Did we complain? No. Did we call John Mores a liar when we sold Alan Ball? No. Why? Because we were the equivalent of the Sky 4.

So Billy Liar? Well as much as any other. Perhaps his biggest fault is not being the best business person in the game. And you still think all the problems are because he loves owning Everton and won't give it up? He may lack judgement sometimes but he's not insane.

Ged, I’m not sure what point you are trying to make?

If its one of, once again slagging Bill Kenwright off.. particularly regarding his ’Watch this space’ quip, then how the hell do you not know that he wasn’t talking about Fellaini??

If you check the OS, Moyes has reassuringly stated that he has been monitoring/chasing Fellaini for 2 years.

All along, Moutinho may have been a ploy to detract any further attention being drawn to our latest signing.

When Alan Ball was sold to Arsenal the first most fans knew about it was when the deal was announced. The only rumour-mongering that happened in those days was in the pub.

If you look at some of the posts on this site over the last few days its a wonder that the business world has kept moving as many hours have been spent by many people watching the many transfer websites.

So these days not only do clubs need to keep their potential signings secret from their opposition they must somehow make all details available to their information-hungry supporters. How do they do this? Possibly by telling a few white lies? I’m not defending BK but he did say watch this space and the space, to some extent, has been filled!

The point is obvious. Like it or not, the people involved in owning and or running a football club nowadays (if not always) are business people who see an opportunity to MAKE MONEY for themselves! End of story! They have been successful to be in that position in the first place so why would they put their personal comfort (wealth) in jeopardy just because thousands of other people want to be happy? I’m not condoning it by any stretch... but that’s the way it is.... isn’t it?

Ged. As I’ve already stated on an earlier post, Kenwright’s an egotistical, self-gloryfying arsehole, and the sooner he fooks off the better.

I was pleased we signed Fellaini. He looks the kind of player we really needed. But after last season, we needed (IMO) at least 4 quality players BEFORE the following season started. A right back, a Def Mid, an Attacking Mid., and a class striker to play of Yak. Moyes i believe knew this and would?ve told BK that this is what we need to tackle the Top 4 and get Silverware next season.

In my opinion we have only 1 of those 4 positions covered. I'll reserve judgement on Jacobsen and Castillo. But if at 28 & 26 respectively they haven?t set the world alight yet, then I doubt they every will. Again Saha ? if he keeps fit he may replace Johnson. But we needed more!

I really hope BK hasn?t bought any more time with the Fellaini purchase. This doesn't vindicate BK and the worst summer of transfer dealings I can remember. Bullshit and broken promises. Freebies and loan players. The Fellaini signing is like icing a turd. Pointless, as it does not address what we really need to progress.

We needed investment 4 years ago and we still haven?t got it. I hope BK leaves soon ? before Moyes and the players do!

I for one believe that the problems stem from his reluctance to sell, or to use his words ’sell to the right person’. The talk on sky last night was of an impending influx of money from the middle east and asia, and , if you look at the racing world, you would find it difficult to disagree with that prediction. I dont know the precise details but I think its a safe bet that Dr Thaksin did not want a seat on the board and a major shareholding as part of the deal for City.

Can you imagine if Everton had signed Robinho last night and the ensuing demand for shirts with his name on? City will make a good percentage of his fee back from shirt sales - we wouldn’t have any to sell. And that is why the club needs to be bought lock, stock and barrell. We need a major overhaul off the pitch and either a new or re-developed stadium. If this does not come soon, we will be relegation material. If QPR come up this season, there will be them, Villa, Spurs, City, Newcastle and West Ham with super - rich owners and the likes of Boro and Sunderland much better ran than us. That doesn’t leave many spaces left for the poor relations and thats what we are becoming.

The City situation shows that there are investors, maybe we should employ a specialist to find them.

The talk yesterday on the radio from a football business analyst was that the Arabian investors were looking at three clubs, specifically:

Arsenal, Newcastle and Manchester City. Manchester City they decided was the best investment for them. The specific reasons given for the choice of these three clubs was that the stadia of each were already in place. No mention was made of Everton.

Make of that what you will.

I really don’t understand why you attack DM and BK so much.

They are what we have, there are lots of other clubs that would give their right arm for the ’team’ we have in them ( a top, ’young’ British manager and a Chairman who is a Blue and cares for the club )

Forget about all the attention that is being directed at Man City at the moment. It will happen to us at some point, and there’ll come a time when most PL teams are owned by rich millionaires/billionaires.

For now though, take stock, we have what we have.. we’re still better than most in the PL ... and who’s to say all the money that is going to be ploughed into City is going to make them successful. Look at how much Spurs have spent - and compare their performances with ours this season.

I think sometimes all this moaning and groaning is about the fact we haven’t any new £10m + rated faces to get excited about. DM has done his best in the last week or so, and I totally admire & thank him and BK for what they have pulled off in this transfer window. I actually think some of the business he has done has been ( and will prove to be ) quite shrewd

Me too,Mike, I’ll never forget my ’arl feller waking me up to go to work and saying that Ball had gone. We were in a complete daze. If we could have got hold of the Cat we’d have killed him.
