Fellaini Cup-Tied

Comments (27)

So Fellaini's cuptied until we're most likely well out of the the Uefa Cup. Well, Kenwright and Co, before you start patting yourselves on your backs and grinning your smug smiles, tell us why had to wait until two fucking seconds before the end of the transfer window to sign him? If you'd have got your fucking fingers out three weeks ago, this wouldn't have happened.

Go on, spin us a lie, you know we're worth it ? not!

Mark, do you think Liege would have sold their best player BEFORE a £10m cup tie for the CL?

Mark - I think Simon has summed it up and after all it doesn’t matter how badly you want to sign a player - the other club has to agree to sell and the player himself has to agree. It’s not always straight forward as dear old Rafa found out when he tried to sign Barry from Aston Villa.

Mark, how is that doom-mongering going?

Get behind the team now, ok? We’re by no means out yet.

I didn’t know anything about the deal until yesterday morning - when I chcked the Football news on the internet- and even then at first I thought we had signed an Italian Film Director !!
By all accounts the lad seems a very good player and Mark whilst you moan about him not being available for the UEFA Cup right now - he has signed a 5 year contract - so hopefully he will play in European games in future seasons even if the worst happens for us in UEFA this season.

I’d rather us concentrating on the league for now,get back on track and ’try’ & finish in the top 4 than worry about the UEFA cup for now.CL is where the money is and thats what MoyesBoyz should be striving for more than anything else imo.

Although I’m delighted that we finally bought some (apparent) quality I can’t help but wonder why,if,as Moyes states,we had been watching Fellaini for two years,we had to wait until the last second to buy him, and at an inflated price, too.

I agree with Andrew Fearns and Alan Ross. Not only did we buy their best player but we didn’t give Liege any time to use the money generated to buy any replacements.

Michael Brien, I think he’s only cup-tied for the early rounds of the UEFA, he’ll be available for the later rounds this year should we make it through, at least that’s the way I understand it.

Mark, No comment, I don’t know about twofer, but Mark’s post is a load of twaddle

I think he was last second because we were trying to buy M?bia and Moutinho and get a permit for Obinna. There are many reasons to be disappointed with this summer but Moyes and Co only having one earthly body each isn?t one of them.

If you read Moyes interview on Fellaini, he states that we have been chasing him for a while, but obviously Liege wanted him for their CL tie and then were reluctant to sell him to us as we got drawn against them in the UEFA cup. That’s why it took so long and why we had to pay so much. We were very keen on him and wanted him now.

You could argue why did Man Utd wait to sign Berbatov when they have wanted him all summer!

We need to take advantage of this seasons Uefa cup competition, as it has just got harder to qualify, now there is a big 5 in the Premiership. Life does not get easier, and I still say we will rue our incompetent summer come the end of the season. COYB!!!!

So, I?m talking nonsense and I?m just a doom-mongerer?

Well, considering, we made three signings last week, who didn?t even make our foetus dominated bench or our Phil Jagielka midfield and since then we took a keeper who Wigan sent on loan to Stoke last season, as "competition" for Howard, then we break our transfer record on a 20 year old with moments to spare in the transfer window, despite Moyes supposedly tracking him for eighteen months or more.

Well, how easily pleased you all are. The club has been set back by years in a period of just three months and all of a sudden, just because the cash has been splashed on a single player, everything in the garden is rosy. Anyone would think we?re Man City fans chuffed to see Robinho rock up.

Any chance we had of taking the club forward following last season?s finish has gone. We got left behind as Sunderland, Villa and Co wrapped up all their business early, while our board squabbled, dithered and lied about the money we were supposed to have. That and our manager STILL hasn?t signed a new contract. Now with the City takeover we?ll be lucky to finish in the top half this season.

Happy? NSNO my arse!

It’s the eBay sniper phenonemom. At 11:45pm there wouldn’t be enough time for Newcastle to hijack our bids!

We can now put our anxieties to rest and enjoy the January window knowing nothing will happen until 15mins before 3rd Feb! Thanks Everton, you’ve helped lower my blood pressure!

You have to ask why he hasn’t signed Chris. The stuff about taking stock, seeing to the end of the season obviously wasn’t the case.

Maybe Liege would not have sold him or he would not have left had they qualified for the group stages of the Champion?s League.

Simon - I gather that he is cup tied and can?t play in the UEFA Cup until after January. I was assuming a "worst case scenario" re this season?s UEFA Cup - as our draw is the toughest of the English clubs - we seem to have not been recognised for finishing in the highest league place of the UEFA qualifiers nor given any reward for getting to the last 16 last season.

On the subject of our new record signing (I can?t spell Fellaini) - I am pleased that we have signed him. He seems the type of player we need.

That doesn?t make everything hunky dory - I am still very unhappy that we took so long to strengthen our squad - but at least I feel a little bit more optimistic than this time last week.

Mark Wynne: "The club has been set back by years in a period of just three months"

How do you know? You’ve no idea if we’ll match or better last season’s efforts. Last year we had 6 points from 3 games. This year we have 3 points from 3 games. Not a massive difference given the injury crisis and lack of new faces.

But now we have 5 new players competing for places which increases competition within the squad, we have Cahill returning soon and Pienaar shortly after, the manager and players have a break to gather themselves and shake the transfer window off and we have two newly promoted teams to face in our next 2 games.

The season well and truly starts now. Thank fuck silly season is over.

And please can the doom mongers go into hibernation until there really is something to whinge about. If in 7 or 8 games time we find ourselves in the bottom 3 then you have the freedom of this site.

Dan,

Basically Fellaini could sign for us if his previous team were not still in the UEFA Cup.

In UEFAs eyes, UEFA Cup competitions are UEFA Cup competitions. You don’t get cup tied seperately. However, you can move between competitions if your old club doesn’t.

Hence last season, we could play Fernandes because his old team went straight out of the CL, not in to UEFA. But Hutton could not play for Spurs because Rangers went from the CL to the UEFA Cup (Hutton had only played CL games).

We couldn’t play Fernandes in the UEFA cup last season.

If a player plays in CL proper his is cup-tied in all euro competitions. If a player plays in a euro qualification he will only be eligible after in January. If he plays in uefa proper he is still eligable for CL after January.

This is because Uefa cup is subordinate to CL so a player who plays in CL cannot make step-down to uefa but you can make the step up.

Basically it is another rule enforced by UEFA along with other rules enforced by the FA, FIFA, G14 (or euro club alliance or whatever it is now called..basically the G7/8 of Football)et al to ensure that the rules in world football are the benafit of big clubs, i.e. in january man u can sign a player who has played in eufa cup and use him in CL and thus not limit their options in january. ’smaller’ clubs dont have this luxury.

Fran Mitchell,

We did play Fernandes in the UEFA cup last season.

Don’ t know whether I’m misuderstanding your point, and sorry for being a pedant, but Fernandes played against SK Brann. And not with any great distinction. If my memory serves, he absolutely stank the gaff out.

A totally pointless post without any common sense or knowledge of the deal.

1- We DID bid for Felliani in March and have been negotiating for weeks with Liege.

2- Why would they sell before their Champs League game, especially afer they flew him back from the Olympics to play.

3- It is written into our agreement that he cannot play against Liege.

4- The only thing missing from this summer was Obinna and Moutinho jetting in. For the sake of 2 players it's hardly a disgrace.
