Billionaires Make Me Nervous

Comments (8)

All this talk of a takeover is something I think that scares me as much as relegation. Extreme? Maybe, but the fact is every article I read about Man City right now seems to have an air of uneasiness about it. Every time Mark Hughes speaks, he seems to have to reaffirm himself, and I think his record with the resources he has had is impeccable.

If Everton become the play thing of a Billionaire and buy ten £10 million+ players in January, it will no longer be the People's Club. "So be it," some of you will say, especially if we start picking up silverware. But, why I have never had trouble associating myself with Everton is because I think we are one of the few clubs around that can be respected for doing what we do. Competing and making the best of what little we have.

Personally, I think finishing fourth with our current team and Chairman would be more satisfying then winning the league with a checkbook. I haven't had respect for Chelsea in awhile. I'm quickly losing any respect I had for City. Everton have become known as the People's Club for the exact reasons I have just spoken about. If we become the next Chelsea, what will we be?

JB - I’m repeating myself here because I was just thinking about a similar thing in an article. If the billionaire does come in, do you think that he or she (HRM the Queen perhaps) will ask anyone where the new ground will be built? Royal Birkdale would afford decent sea views.

Joey - there?s a chap from round your way that I thought would have been the prime candidate to look to invest. Isn't the owner of a few Atlanta teams a blue (I know he owns the at least Hawks anyway).... Just a thought, whether he has the funds or interest is a whole different story...

Apparently Mike Ashley has several enquiries per month about taking Newcastle off his hands. Whilst I’m sure that he’s playing things up and BK is playing things down, the truth must surely lie somewhere in between. It’s inconcievable that in the 6 or 7 years that Bill has been in charge that no one has offered to buy the club.

I don’t think that it is for purely selfish reasons that Bill has deflected these offers. I’m sure that, like everyone, he wants to find someone with the clubs best interests at heart, rather than some renegade tyrant from eastern europe or the far east.

As with previous posters, I’d rather see us do it the ’right’ way, rather than throwing as much cash at the problem as possible and hoping that we come out top of the pile. I would seriously rather be a ’Norwich’ and get to the pinnacle through good management and hard work instead of throwing millions of pounds into producing a team with no blend, who are so afraid to lose that they produce strile performances.

Just think what happened to us when Johnson tried to pull his money out, or Magnusson at West Ham. Even look at the situation in Italy or Spain. When a club relies on a benefactor to bail them out, they have a business built on a house of cards. I would much rather see the blues have something with stability, that will weather the storm of fad billionairres.

Move with the times, Joey, or get left behind with relegation plight for years to come. The Moyesiah won?t be here forever.

Joey, "the people's club" line, was was okay for about 5 minutes, but now, I just cringe when it?s rolled out.
I just wished people would stop using it, because we are not the people's club.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that there are some fans who want to keep everything as it is and others who would change a lot to maximise the chances of success.

For some football is about winning, for others its is about playing the game.

Those that want no change like to point at a glorious past, those that are happy with change look forwards to more glory.

For me Everton is and always has been first and formost about winning. Winning has always taken lots of money, a lot more than we currently have. We have to chase the money.

Where do I draw the line? When do Everton stop being Everton? This has nothing to do with ?soul? it is to do with social identity - belonging to a group. That group remains the same for me at Kirkby, but would change if we moved away from ?scouseland?.

’The People’s Club’ was only around from 2002. The bloke credited for the catchphrase is yet to sign his Everton contract. Ironic eh?
